EVENT CHAIR MESSAGE
Brenda Lorenzi
Inland Empire Magazine
I am honored to serve as Event Chair for the American Cancer Society’s Give Cancer the Boot gala taking
place September 21, 2013 at the Riverside Rancheros Equestrian Center. Featuring a spectacular live
auction, great entertainment, delectable dinner and country western dancing, this festive event is one
not to be missed. Our goal is to Give Cancer the Boot and get closer to a world free of this dreaded
disease.
If you are like most Americans, cancer has touched your life or the life of someone you know and love. In
2010 cancer became the leading cause of death worldwide. Despite this statistic, we know cancer can be
overcome and that millions of survivors are alive today because of the work of the American Cancer
Society. They are helping people get well, stay well and they are finding cures.
I invite you to join the fight against cancer by supporting our efforts as sponsors, underwriters and/or
distinguished guests. In this packet you will find an outline of the various opportunities and amenities
provided for all levels of sponsorship. The funds raised during this gala go to support the American
Cancer Society‘s many programs which help local cancer victims and their families with information and
services that provide day-to-day help and emotional support. Many of the cancer breakthroughs we
benefit from today were discovered by Society funded researchers.
There is no other organization in the world that is fighting all forms of this disease on all levels: research,
education, advocacy and patient services, like the American Cancer Society. The Society has been
working to eliminate cancer as a major health problem for 100 years. However, there is still so much
work to be done to fight this disease and we need your help. In 2012 an estimated 14,875 people will
hear the words “you have cancer” in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties alone.
Dust off your cowboy boots, put on your best western duds and join me and the American Cancer
Society in the fight by supporting the Give Cancer the Boot gala. Together we can make a difference!
Sincerely,
Brenda Lorenzi

REASONS TO SUPPORT
The American Cancer Society saves lives, and you can make a difference!
•
•
•
•
by helping people stay well – by preventing cancer or detecting it early;
by helping people get well – by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis;
by finding cures – through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and
by fighting back – by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying
communities worldwide to join the fight.
AS THE NATION’S LARGEST NON-GOVERNMENTAL INVESTOR IN CANCER
RESEARCH, contributing more than $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about
cancer into what we do.
As a result, more than 11 million people in American who have had cancer and
countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
WE PROVIDE FREE SUPPORT
In 2012, more than 14,875 Riverside and San Bernardino County residents will hear the words, “you have
cancer.” The Society offers patient support services that cover the range of emotional and practical help
needed by patients, their loved ones, their caregivers, and their community from the time of diagnosis,
and throughout the cancer journey. Last year we served more than 5,098 Inland Empire area patients
with information and support.

This unique free service provides information through the warmth of a phone call. Trained cancer
information specialists are available 24/7.
www.cancer.org
This user-friendly site includes a cancer resource center with in-depth information on every major type of
cancer, along with an email service.
TRANSPORTATION TO TREATMENT
Road to Recovery
This American Cancer Society program is made up of volunteer drivers who use
their own cars to drive people with cancer to their treatment appointments and
back home again.
Patient Lodging Program
The American Cancer Society Patient Lodging Program is designed for cancer
patients who travel more than 50 miles for treatment who do not have friends
or relatives to stay with in the area, and for whom this would be a financial
hardship.

YOUR DONATION IN ACTION
HELP WITH APPEARANCE-RELATED SIDE EFFECTS OF TREATMENT
Look Good Feel Better is a free program that teaches people in active cancer
treatment ways to help with the appearance-related side effects of treatment.
This program is offered jointly by the American Cancer Society, the Personal Care
Products Council Foundation, and the National Cosmetology Association.
BREAST CANCER SUPPORT
Reach To Recovery
The American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery program lets you talk one-on-one with a trained
volunteer about breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. The volunteers are breast cancer survivors, so
they know the fear and worry that comes with a diagnosis
CANCER PREVENTION STUDY-3
You can join the movement for more birthdays and fight back against cancer
by enrolling in a new research study called the Cancer Prevention Study-3
(CPS-3). The goal of CPS-3 is to better understand the factors (lifestyle,
environmental, genetic) that cause or prevent cancer and, ultimately, to help
eliminate cancer as a major health concern for future generations. We are
inviting men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 years who have no
personal history of cancer to join this historic research study.
MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER
Making Strides is the American Cancer Society’s non-competitive premier walk
event that provides an opportunity to honor breast cancer survivors, educate
women about breast cancer prevention and early detection, and raise funds
and awareness to help achieve a day when no one will have to hear the words
“You have breast cancer.”
WANT TO PROMOTE TEAM BUILDING AND MORALE?
Relay For Life is the Society’s signature event nationwide that celebrates
cancer survivorship and community action against cancer. Organized by
volunteers, Relay For Life is a fun, overnight team event that raises funds to
fight cancer. Your workplace can build a team, take turns walking laps
around the track, and support those that have been touched by cancer in
your midst. For more information, contact our local American Cancer Society
office at 951-300-1224.

www.g ivecancertheboot.org
One hundred years ago, the American Cancer Society
began the fight of a lifetime – the fight against cancer.
Now it’s time to join together to finish the fight.
After 100 years of saving lives and creating more birthdays, we’ve led the way in working tirelessly to
transform cancer from deadly to treatable and from treatable to preventable.
•
•
•
•
•
Today, 2 out of 3 people diagnosed with cancer in the US are surviving (for at least five years). In fact, every day
more than 400 people celebrate birthdays that would have otherwise been lost to the disease.
We’ve contributed to a 20 percent decline in cancer
cancer death rates in the US since the early 1990s. That means we’ve
helped save nearly 1.2 million lives during that time.
We’ve played a role in nearly every cancer research breakthrough in recent history.
Each year, we help cancer patients everywhere get the help they need when they need it. For example, last year
alone we assisted nearly 1 million people who called us for help, providing free services like a place to stay while
traveling for treatment, rides to treatment, emotional support, and much more.
Our work has helped lead to a 50 percent drop in smoking since the 1960s, which has contributed to an overall
drop in lung cancer death rates.
