We welcome all new members to join in order to
assure the PFDW’s continued financial support
to WOMEN and STATEWIDE CANDIDATES.
It is our sincere hope that all PFDW Board
members, women and men elected officials,
individuals, clubs and those who are financially
able will renew or begin a CENTURY CLUB
membership. The challenges of increased
funding to additional candidates will be possible
only through increased participation.
This year, as we elect candidates all across
Pennsylvania, we extend our thanks for your
continued support.
If you have joined in the past, we invite you to
join again this year.

THE SURVEY - SUMMER 2012
2012 Convention Update from Hidden Valley - When Women Vote, Democrats Win!
Thank you to everyone who made the
85th Annual Convention at Hidden Valley
a success. This year’s hosts, the
Democratic Women of Westmoreland
hope that those who attended found the
weekend, fun, educational and inspiring!
We hope you found the workshops and
speakers interesting and informative. – I
know we all enjoyed our friend Lynn
Cullen.
At the Friday’s “Real Auction” the
attendees got a chance to bid on some
interesting items – from a vintage clothes
hamper and View Master (complete with
discs of the Grand Canyon) to beautiful
jewelry and lovely glassware – everyone
enjoyed the bidding and our Auctioneer - and at Saturday’s “Silent Auction”
attendees competed for some valuable
gifts – some at bargain prices. Thank
you, Michele Sellitto, for the gift certificate to the posh Bricco Restaurant in
Harrisburg, and to everyone who
brought baskets and wonderful items for
us to auction.
On Saturday, a group of 50 went to the
Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville,
about 40 minutes from Hidden Valley.
Everyone who went said it was a moving and emotional experience. Thanks to
the generous contribution one of our
WOW members, we were able to include
the trip at no extra cost. We also gave
everyone a lunch bag with our Federation Logo as a memento, filled with
snacks and water for the trip.

PFDW 2012 OUTSTANDING ELECTED DEMOCRATIC WOMAN
Elected Democratic Women to be honored all across Pennsylvania
Outstanding Elected Democratic Women's Event Scheduled
Sunday, November 18
The Pennsylvania Federation of Democratic Women is hoping
to honor eighteen Outstanding Elected Democratic Women,
one from each of its eighteen Districts across the state. Each
Club again has the opportunity to nominate an elected Democratic woman from the District in which the Club is located.
The nomination should state the following:
The office to which the nominee was elected; length of
time in office;
The local club to which the nominee belongs and is active;
the nominee’s involvement with the PFDW (i.e.,
board member,
Century Club member attends conventions and events,
was supported by the PFDW PAC, etc.);
The nominee’s involvement in her community, in the Democratic Party, and how she has aided other women
seeking elective office;
Member is currently elected to a public, not party office.
Clubs are asked to send nominations to their Regional Director, and the officeholder with the highest number of votes in
each District will be honored. In case of a tie, the Regional
Director will cast the deciding vote. Nominations are to be
sent to Regional Directors by October 1, 2012, and the name of
one person selected in each District should be forwarded to
OEDW Chair Susan Rutt, along with information as described
above, plus the proposed nominee’s contact information, by no
later than October 15.
Each honoree will receive one ticket to the OEDW event to be
held in the Harrisburg area on November 18.
Please contact Susan Rutt at [email protected] or 610-7913497 with any questions.
Tickets to the brunch are $35 each, or a table of eight for $260.
An auction to benefit our Federal Political Action Committee
will also be held, and contributions for the auction are
gratefully accepted.

Helen Cook, NFDW Convention in Louisville KY
I purchased a raffle ticket for a chance to go to
the Winner's Circle at Churchill Downs during
the 2012 NFDW Convention, where they
sponsored the seventh race. Shortly after
arriving at Churchill Downs, the drawing took
place, and to my surprise, I had the winning
ticket! Heading down to the Winner's Circle, I
felt excitement that I hadn't experienced since I
was a child. The NFDW presented the trophy to the owner of
the winning horse, and we had our photo taken with the owner
and the jockey. Standing next to such a large horse was breath
-taking, as he was very beautiful. There is also so much to see
on that level you can't see from the stands. It was an honor to
share the moment with the group of women who were in the
Winner's Circle with me.

At the June meeting, local activist Stacie Ritter shared her

She battled with her insurance company to cover treatment
for her cancer-stricken twin daughters. Ritter had spoken in
support of President Obama's health care law at the US
Supreme Court.
At our monthly meeting in May, we awarded a $500 check to
Ashley Sollars of Etters, PA. A graduate of Northeastern High
School, Ashley first attended the University of Pittsburgh
where she was President of the College Democrats and very
active in student government. While at Pitt, she was offered a
fellowship position in the 2008 Obama campaign. Financial
challenges resulted in her transfer to York College where she is
majoring in Political Science. We are extremely pleased to
name Ashley as this year’s Scholarship Recipient, and she is
extremely grateful.

In March FDW past president Lori Rittle was awarded Civic
Leader of the Year for Indiana County. She was nominated by
the local chapter for her many volunteer efforts. In the political
arena, she is a leader in both the FDW and the Democratic
Party. As her bio stated, "[Rittle] brings together the energies of
both groups, creating a synergy that has helped every aspect of
organization, from recruiting new leaders, to encouraging activism on issues of concern to the community, to mobilizing for
elections."
In June, the Indiana County Federation sent two credentialed
delegates to the 2012 PA Convention in Hidden Valley. The
group also sponsored the Hospitality Suite on Friday and
Saturday evenings where they welcomed delegates and members
from all over the state. It was a time to relax over wine and

our female delegate, is an FDW member.) The funds raised
at this event will be used to support candidates.
Our Spring Banquet was a success as well. Mayor Ed
Pawloski came from Allentown, PA to address the guests.
Speaking from his experience governing Pennsylvania's third
largest city, the Mayor rallied the audience behind the
Democratic ticket. Other speakers included Kathleen Kane,

Westmoreland FDW.
Our club members were busy working on the primary election.
Our efforts were rewarded with a big win. Because of
redistricting, two sitting Democratic Congressmen were vying
for the same seat for the 12 District in the U.S. Congress. Here
in Cambria County, we worked to keep congressman, Mark
Critz, as our representative. On April 19, 2012, the East Hills
FDW hosted a picnic to urge fellow Democrats to support
Mark. The hall was packed with over 200 fellow democrats.
Even “Bowser” from the 80’s hit show of “Sha Na Na” was
there to sing Mark’s praises for the work he does for the all his
constituents.

Democratic Women’s Club. What a great job they did with
the speakers, fun activities, side trip to the “Flight 93
Memorial” and the food. Kudos to the WOW Group of
women. You surely “wowed” us during the convention.
This summer we will be doing lots of work to get ready for the
General Election in November. Some of our activities include
participating in “Community Days’ in Richland Twp, the
Cambria County Fair, and doing the phone banks for the presidential election.

It was in 1919 that women were admitted to the Executive Committee of the Democratic National Committee, a year
before the passage of the Women’s Suffrage Amendment. The Democratic Party historically and presently has been
responsible, to a conspicuous degree, for the modern development that has given women recognition in government.
In one of her newspaper columns of 1939, Eleanor Roosevelt suggested that there be a Democratic Women’s day
celebration. Her proposal was taken up immediately, and Women's Day has become an annual event since then.
