PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Brinkley Middle School sixth grader Rachel Green. She is a member of China Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She sings alto in the choir and serves as secretary of the usher board. Her favorite subject is math and she loves electronics. While she loves the idea of being a cosmetologist, Green has an even greater love for teaching. Currently, her goal is to become a high school math teacher. Her father Richard Green was recognized at the meeting along with administrators and educators from Brinkley Middle School. PRAYER OF INVOCATION The Prayer of Invocation was given by Rev. Claude Tucker, senior pastor of Truevine Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi. Rev. Tucker was born in Madison County and later moved to Jackson where he graduated from Brinkley High School in 1969. He attended Utica Junior College and Tougaloo College and majored in Philosophy and Religion. He also completed extensive studies in theology at Wesley Theological Seminary, the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education, and the American Banking College. Having accepted Christ at an early age, he began serving in ministry at the age of 19. He served as a Youth Deacon, a Sunday School teacher, an usher, a youth choir member, a missionary for the Jackson District Association, and the co-chairman for the Jackson Youth Convention. Rev. Tucker was employed with Deposit Guaranty National Bank for 30 years before retiring. Rev. Tucker and his wife Harriett have three children Rev. Claude Edward, Jr., Rev. Craig Eugene, and Chemeeka Evette Tucker. They have one daughter-in-law Kim Tucker and five grandchildren. Board member Camille Stutts Simms presented certificates of appreciation to Rachel Green and Rev. Claude E. Tucker. 1 JPS BOARD MEETINGS: JPS BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVES VARIOUS COMMUNITY DONATIONS The Board of Trustees holds two regular mee ngs per month. The Board of Trustees agreed to accept various donations as detailed below. Sykes Elementary School—Monika N. Smith of Starkville, Mississippi, donated a love seat, chair, lamps and two tables to be used by teachers and parents and three sets of radios for communication, total value $305. Green Elementary School—Harvey Williams of Jackson, Mississippi, donated a Lifetime 48” portable basketball system and a Harlanger portable public address system, total value $550. March mee ngs will be held March 3 and 17, 2015, at 5:30 p.m. in the Board Mee ng Room at 621 South State Street. The JPS Board of Trustees welcomes public comments regarding policy revisions. BOARD APPROVES IGNITE PILOT ASSESSMENT PROGRAM Board of Trustees approved a Demonstration Agreement and Terms of Service and End User Agreement between Xerox Business Services, LLC (Xerox) and the Jackson Public School District to pilot the use of Xerox Ignite software at North Jackson Elementary School. Ignite is a web-based, teacher tool for printing, scanning and scoring a variety of assessments. The software provides frequent and specific feedback on what students are learning. Ignite’s teacher tools also suggest ways to address each student’s needs. The system saves valuable time spent administering and grading assessments, so teachers can be more efficient and spend more time personalizing their instruction for every student. Xerox will provide all the necessary software and hardware to utilize in all 3rd and 5th grade classrooms at North Jackson Elementary School. The terms of this Agreement shall commence on February 18, 2015, and terminate on June 30, 2015. WATCH MEETINGS ON JPS ITV: Channel 19 Program Schedule Feedback from the school’s principal and teachers will be given at the conclusion of the demonstration period. Facebook.com/JacksonPublicSchools BOARD APPROVES CALL ME MISTER PROGRAM Twi er.com/DrCedrickGray Board of Trustees approved the agreement with Clemson University (CU), National Call Me MISTER (Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) Program, Jackson State University (JSU), Mississippi Learning Institute, National Drop Out Prevention Center, and the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) for a three week pilot program to enhance literacy among second grade male students at Isable Elementary School. The mission of Call Me MISTER is to increase the number of available teachers from a broader more diverse background particularly among the state's lowest performing elementary schools. Student participants are largely selected from among underserved, socio-economically disadvantaged, and educationally at-risk communities. The Kellogg Foundation provided the second round of funding for Phase 2 of the nationally acclaimed Call ME MISTER Program Collaborative between CU in Clemson, South Carolina, and JSU in Jackson, Mississippi. Key strategies addressed in Phase 2 include the following: JPS Parent Toolkits provide an overview of what every elementary child will learn by the end of the academic year in mathema cs and English language arts/literacy. These toolkits, for grades K–2 and grades 3–5, are based on the new Common Core State Standards. BUS DRIVERS WANTED Jackson Public Schools is seeking bus drivers. Increasing the pool of African American male teachers in K-8 public schools in Jackson, Mississippi Expanding and further developing the program collaborative between Clemson and Jackson State Universities Increasing the capacity of select faculty in both institutions as well as MISTER candidates to model and coach high leverage student engagement and instructional strategies by participating in professional learning and fieldbased experiences with MISTERs Admitting and graduating yearly cohorts of MISTERs from the College of Education at Jackson State University. JPS HONORS ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR AND FINALISTS JPS SEEKING VOLUNTEERS JPS is looking for volunteers who want to serve as Book Buddies and help JPS students in the early elementary grades improve their literacy skills. She was also saluted at the JPS Board meeting along with the two finalists for the Administrator of the Year competition. Superintendent Dr. Cedrick Gray recognized the school level Teachers of the Year for the elementary, middle, and high school divisions. The seven-member troupe spoke of the future, their voice, their dreams and visions. In her introduction, Northwest Principal Chinelo Evans defined Northwest IB Middle School Prodigy Experience the Prodigy Experience as a group of student leaders established to promote creative, synergistic, literacybased expression for students at our school. Board Briefs, February 17, 2015 JACKSON PUBLIC SCHOOLS 5 SUPERINTENDENT RECOGNIZES MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETIC TEAMS The Whitten Middle School soccer team defeated Bailey APAC for the JPS Middle School Championship, finishing the season undefeated. Coach Renauldo Millsap is the head coach of the team. Whitten Eagles Soccer Team - JPS Middle School Soccer Champions The Bailey APAC Lady Knights defeated the Siwell Lady Cougars 43–29 for the Middle School Basketball Championship. Robert Jacobs is the team's head coach and Henry Stringfellow is the assistant coach. Bailey APAC Lady Knights - JPS Middle School Girls Basketball Champions The Northwest Wolverines defeated the Siwell Cougars 51–43 for the boys' title.
