landscape and habitats, sites, structures, stories and references in popular culture.
From reclamation of the coast in post Roman and Medieval times to Medieval clifftop churches,
Wat Tyler and the Peasants Revolt of 1381, Elizabethan Shipwrights and the starting point for the
Armada in 1588, the Mayflower, smuggling, coastal invasions and defences, to providing
inspiration for artists such as Constable and writers such as Charles Dickens, HG Wells, Rebecca
West and Bernard Cornwell.
Latterly it has become a valued place for wildlife and recreation.

factory. The site commemorates Wat Tyler, leader of the 1381
