Phew. A game that we could of, should of and thankfully did. A spirited
contest today against a competitive term from the south west. Scoreboard
pressure was slightly eased as a well executed corner put us in the lead at
the half time break. Injuries were on top of the leaderboard but the
scoreboard soon caught up with another two quick goals. A scrambling
final 20 minutes and with bodies battered and bruised we held SWS to an
intense 3-2 win. Good job girls. Aimee, can't wait to see your beautiful
nose.

Ladies Provisional 1 vs UWA (Lost 0 - 2)
Best: G. Glaskin, K. Atkinson, K. Meacock/H. Menegola
Good Game Girls. A pleasure to watch. We lacked a bit with our trapping
and delivery to a player in a good position. Maybe some of the passing was
trying to go too far which gave the opposition a chance to intercept. We
never stopped trying and they only scored from simple mistakes in the
crucial defensive zone. Keep the press so you don't give them a chance to
build coming out of defence before the final assault on goals. More
practice on individual skills and lots of GOAL practice would only assist
us in the long run. A huge Thank you to Nigel Atkinson for filling in as
Coach whilst Greg was playing his game.

Ladies Provisional 2 (Gold) vs WASPs (Lost 1 - 3)
Best: A. Sperinck, K. Welten, J. Holmes
Goals: S. Dalgleish
A determined, capable and physical opponent pushed us the entire game.
We played hard and took it to them playing some of our best hockey this
season. I especially enjoyed all the controlled violence and swearing that
was new. Solid effort all around girls. Thanks to Tegan for filling in :)
Mens Provisional 3 (Gold) vs UWA

Mens Provisional 4 vs Kwinana (Lost 2 - 3)
Best: A. Bedford, J. Cornwall/T. McEntee
Goals: D. Hadley, J. Wake
Unfortunately it was our first loss at home which put an end to our home
ground winning streak. Our skills are improving, as we are moving the ball
around better, but we need to stop having everyone chasing the ball and
stick to our marks on occasion. It would have been a completely different
game without the couple of dodgy umpire calls…

METRO LEAGUE
Mens Metropolitan 1 vs WASPS (Lost 0 - 1)
Best: T. Barrett, D. Pickering, S. Willis
A gutsy effort to play with 10 men only to concede an OG in the last
couple of minutes.
Ladies Metropolitan 1 vs Uni Asssoc (Lost 2 - 3)
Best: K. Mishra, J. Olde, L. Brearley/L. Coss
Well Uni are always a hard task and today was no different. It was a tough
rough game but we dominated in the first half with our short accurate
passing which unfortunately faded away in the second half and we let
them back in. Once again the umpires didn't show up, so Thanks Jonathon
Rayfield for filling the gap.

VETERANS
Ladies O35 Division 2 - BYE
Mens O40 Midweek - BYE
Mens O40 Division 1 vs Southern River (Won 6 - 0)
Best: D. Wilson, A. Scanlon, B. Hancock/D. Ross
Goals: B. Potter (2), A. Scanlon (2), J. Cooke, D. Wilson
Excellent result against a committed opposition. Chippy scored two
excellent goals, and Wildy & Scanners dominated going into attack. Hank
& Dave also did an excellent job defending the team from Crowey's
incompetence by rarely allowing the opposition into our D.
Mens O40 Division 2 vs Hale (Won 3 - 1)
Goals: A. Criddle, C. Simpson-Bint, A. Spear
Tough win over those nasty Hale boys.
4
Mens O40 Division 4 vs Hale (Won 5 - 1)
Best: M. Lawrence, P. Paino, B. Kennington
Goals: M. Lawrence (3), D. Wauhop, S. Walker
Good all round team performance. Fantastic forward pressure from the full
backs the halffbacks and linking play from inners and thr centre forward
gave us a lot of scoring oppurtunities upfront. This time we seemed to have
though we converted our chances into goals. Well done guys
Mens O50 Division 1 vs Hale (Drew 1 - 1)
Best: M. Jensen, G. Ross, A. Reynolds/P. Dawkins
Goals: G. Hunt
With late withdrawals due to injury and sickness, we managed to field a
team with the help of friends. Thanks to Graeme, Kevin and Lewie for your
efforts on the day. Unfortunately we couldn’t put enough balls in the back of
our net to secure the points but a draw is better than a loss. When we are
back to full strength, our opposition had better watch out. Let’s hope it’s
before September!
Mens O50 Division 2 vs Southern River (Won 2 - 0)
Best: R. Nottage, S. Llanwarne, T. Brooks
Goals: A. Marshall, M. Pitcher
A good team performance
Mens O50 Division 3 vs Hale (Won 4 - 0)
Best: G. Bowater, S. McEntee, M. Hudson/R. Bell
Goals: S. McEntee (3), G. Bowater
Great come back game from last week. Everyone put in a fantastic effort.
Thanks to John Smith, Kelvin Woodward and Andy Toogood for helping fill
the void of missing players. Steve McEntee slotted three and Gary Bowater
one to see us cement our position in the four. Another great team effort

JUNIORS
Boys 11/12A vs Peel (Won 5 - 2) 2013-05-10
Best: Ash Ranford, Fraser Hay, Julian Bocking
Goals: F. Hay (2), P. Rundle (2), J. Lawrence
Great forward pressure, quick passing and quick counter attacks saw us 2-0
ahead after 10 minutes. Even though we dropped off quite a bit, we still
entered half time 3-1 up. The boys then lifted their game and played a solid
35 minutes for the second half, moving the ball well going forward, and
great defensive work rates. the 3 boys that came up, alex, tom and jordan
fitted into the team very well, and all played really good games.
Boys 11/12A vs University (Won 3 - 2) 2013-05-17
Best: Jack Davoren, Pat Rundle, Isaac Freshwater
Goals: M. Tate (2), J. Ross
It was always going to be a hard game against UWA at UWA. With Jayden
out the lineup was tinkered with a little. Callum and Jamie played
excellently in the forward line, Jamie scoring the first goal and Callum with
his non stop pressure. We moved the ball well early on, and gained a 3-1
lead at half time thanks to some great team work. In the second half we
cracked a little under the pressure, allowing them to score, which then turned
the last 10 minutes into mayhem. The boys held their nerve and defended
very well to allow us to walk away with a 3-2 win.
Girls 11/12A vs UWA
Best: M Sader, S Gerrard, S Matthews
The girls took on some quality opposition that included a number of State
players this week and were unlucky not to score a couple of goals when
some shots went just wide of the net. UWA failed to capitalise on its seven
short corners most of which were thwarted by the fearless Sarah and her
intimidating face mask. Despite the score the match was very intense with
our defence fending off a determined opposition but on a few occasions
UWA managed to outrun our defence and score. UWA showed us how the
midfielders can create opportunities and capitalise on them. We may have
lost but we have learnt a couple of valuable lessons early in the season.

Girls 11/12A Res vs UWA (Drew 1 - 1)
Goals: K. Wynhorst
Great game from the girls. Created plenty of opportunities but couldn't
convert. Starting to gel as a team. Thanks to the fill-in girls for a good
contribution.
Boys 11/12B vs OGMHC (Lost 0 - 3)
Best: J. Templeman, M. Kennedy, A. Lawrie
Even though we were beaten 3-0 the match was fairly even, having no
reserves was probably the difference. Great game in goals for first time
keeper Angus, overall good team effort, strong defence form Mitchell at full
back and many strong runs forward from Jordan, just unable to capitalise on
limited opportunities.
Boys 9/10A vs UWA (Lost 0 - 4)
Best: J. Thorn, M. Love, S. Hird
A tough day out against UWA on an average at best grass field at 8:30 on a
Sunday morning resulted in a 4 nil loss. Jamie left the field early after a
lifted ball in defensive D which put him on the side line with a bruised arm
at the 15 min mark. 2 nil at half time the boys were still in it thanks to our
fill in goal keeper Macka who did a fantastic job all day making numerous
saves to keep them in the game for a long time, eventually in the second half
with a reduced bench of only 1 UWA managed to increase the pressure
which resulted in a further 2 goals.

Girls 9/10A vs UWA
Best: M. Foss, A. Marler, N. Matthews
Goals: C. Dawes
" A Challenge IT WAS ". Grass grass. Grass. The girls met an exciting
challenge today where we had players who couldn't stay on their feet. Not
mentioning any names (Cloey). It was a very good day for footy boots. If they
were handy. We started off arriving at the game looking like we were half
asleep. The first 5 min was a bit rocky, and then bang the sunshine burst
through the sky and some good hockey was being played. UWA scored and
we came back to even the score. With a great goal!!! Today was a great effort
from lots of Girls, that were asked to do simple tasks and, I congratulate
them. Remember girls you can set as many goals as you like. UWA finished
the game by scoring 1 more goal. We gained more experience today by
learning more about our team members. Thank you girls for your enthusiasm.
Bullet proof gets a special mention. We don't have enough dummy's to hand
out for the award this week. The award goes to a lot of the parents for yelling
out loudly at the umpire about wrong decisions???? We know who we are.
P.S. thank you to Don Miller and welcome Mark Tate.
Boys 9/10A Res vs UWA (Lost 0 - 5)
Best: H. Lock, W. Reynolds, M. Dixon
A pretty disappointing result but on reflection, it's always going to be tough
without reserves. Hopefully next week we'll be at full strength for the first
time this season. Many thanks to Nick Deluca for filling in for us at RH and
RFB - a very handy player. Despite the dismay of the weekends loss, and the
coaches rant, the team can take a positive boost from all who watched and
saw the boys never give in, never lose heart. We run tirelessly but fall down
in a few key areas that we need to look closely at and address at training.
Remember, a hockey game is a 70 minute game of "keepings off" and we
give the ball to the opposition far too much. These turnovers result in us
wasting so much of our efforts by having to run harder than need be. Smart
running and ball use is essential, also, use what we learn at training in games.
9
Girls 9/10A Res vs UWA (Lost 0 - 2)
Best: Team Effort, ,
This was thought to be a tough game and it turned out that way. UWA
started well and kept the pressure up. They were up 2-0 with field goals.
Saves by goalkeeper Kate and good defence restricted the scoring. Though
Melville moved the ball into the UWA circle, they were not able to convert
the many goal front melees.
Melville started the second half strongly and won the first penalty corner of
the game. The forwards found their rhythm and linked up well. UWA
slowly got back into the game and had a 15 minute spell where Melville
were unable to get the ball into opposition half. UWA also forced a number
of penalty corners. But the defence stood strong once again. The score
remained unchanged and the girls should take credit that they matched one
of the better teams and held them goalless in the second half. With a bye in
the next round, a few good training sessions will see this team continue to
improve their talent.
Girls 9/10B (Gold) vs St Brigids (Lost 1 - 7)
Best: O. Fruzynski, C. Coggin, B. Irvine
Goals: B. Irvine
Game began with melville holding off a good defence and having some
sneaky attacks on goals without being able to get one on the board. As the
game went on the intensity dropped and St brigids pick it up putting some
cracka goals into the net. The girls played a good second half and managed
to finally get one in. Unfortunately we lost 7-1 but we did our best to hold
them off and we have a few things to improve on but all in all it was a good
effort from both defence and attack.
Boys 9/10C vs Canning
Best: M. Widger, R. Breuer, B. Belke
Goals: R. Breuer (3), M. Widger (2), M. Hayward
On our third game of the season we versed the Canning Cougars and for
once we had enough players for a full team and reserve. We won 6-0 thanks
to the combined effort of Ryan, Mitch, Widger, Tom and Scott in the
forward line. We clearly had the advantage and that was they were playing
two men down. It was a great day for a win and the support stayed by our
side egging us on. Great work Melville.

Boys 7/8A vs UWA (Drew 2 - 2)
Best: D. Whibley, M. Love, J. Floyd
Goals: R. Bright, D. Forbes
Unlucky to only grab a 2-2 draw today after playing our best hockey for
the year. Each week we continue to take big steps forward and improve
both individually and as a team. Very encouraging to see our instructions
and game plans being followed out on the field, and hopefully this
continued improvement will see us pick up our first win very shortly. Well
done, but still a lot of work to do!

Boys 7/8A Res vs Rockingham (Drew 1 - 1)
Best: J. Grimston, L. Downey, B. Delaney
Goals: C. Surtees
A really enjoyable game today. Fantastic defensive work and great
attacking which saw us have multiple opportunities.
It is good to see the Boys starting to string together multiple passes and
creating some space to run into. Jay and Lochie had fantastic games in
their respective Half positions with strong tackling and working the ball
forward. Cameron was dominant in the middle and pushed up forward to
score with some great dribbling and stick work. Great to see Josh T come
back on after a solid knock to the knee. Well done Josh.
Girls 7/8A Res vs Vic Park (Drew 2 - 2)
Best: K. O'Sullivan, C. Drayton, A. Ross
Goals: K. O'Sullivan, C. Thompson
A draw plus 2 goals yippee. Great goals scored by Ciara and Kayla. The
teamwork to get the ball in the D was excellent. The girls worked hard in
the first half and it paid off? It was a great come back in the last 10 minutes
of the game as we really put the pressure on.

Boys 7/8B (Gold) vs Canning (Lost 3 - 6)
Best: B. Hopkinson, O. Spear, K. Milson
Goals: A. Wright (2), O. Spear
After a bye in Round 2 the boys rallied this week against a strong
opponent. The opposing teams' forward line was strong but our team
rallied and some quick turnovers were taken advantage of - leading to our
three goals. A fantastic first goal from Oliver was then backed up by
Anthony scoring two great goals - not bad from a player who has only
started playing hockey this year!! We were down 5-1 at half time but our
boys won the second half convincingly having most of the play. A great
effort by all the boys who are showing that they will only get stronger as
the season continues.
Boys 7/8B (White) vs UWA (Lost 0 - 7)
Best: T. Alder, J. Walkemeyer, A. Dunlop
Each week the boys are improving from the week before. Today Taj
showed a lot of character and really wanted the ball. He set a great example
for the rest of the team the follow. Next week we have a rare chance to
play back at the club.
Girls 7/8B (Gold) (Maroon) vs Lions (Drew 0 - 0)
Best: E. Shaw, C. Hobbs, B. Martin
All the girls played extremely well just missing a couple of close goals.
Girls 7/8B (Gold) (White) vs Westside Wolves (Grey) (Lost 0 - 6)
Best: E. Rolls, J. Wenham, P. McWhae
The girls played a great game and stepped it up a notch in the second half.
Their team work and skills are coming along nicely.
16
Boys 5/6A vs UWA (Lost 0 - 6)
Against a bigger stronger opponent our defence and mid fielders were
under constant pressure. University showed the strength over the ball and
position disciplines that Sean has been focusing on at training, and exactly
what happens when you have players in position and can link passes from
the backline to the forward line. They also showed the value of stopping,
having a look to find the gaps, and strong hard hitting. These are all
elements we are working on, and could probably best describe ourselves as
a work in progress. Despite the score the boys kept trying and created a
few of their own opportunities to score with some near misses. Wolves and
University have set the standard. Sean is on the right track with what he is
doing at training, we just need to make sure work hard and eventually it
will come together.
Girls 5/6A vs UWA (Lost 1 - 2)
Best: I. Filmer, C. Forbes, Z. Polglase
Goals: N. Flynn
It was a fairly even match against UWA and Neasa scored a fantastic goal
off a short corner early in the first half. UWA fought back hard though and
tested our defenders: Zoe, Georgia M, Sam, Saoirse, Ivy and Chloe P in
goals who played brilliantly and refused to let the opposition get a goal in
the first half. Despite our determination and the best efforts of every
Melville player UWA scored early in the second half. It was a great game
to watch with our forwards constantly attacking and putting the UWA
defense under pressure. Standouts in this area were Chloe F, Neasa and
Lucy with support from Alyssa, Kate and Georgia F. Unfortunately UWA
scored another goal with 5 minutes to go and although we tried our hardest
we couldn't score. Fantastic effort girls, you all never give up and your first
win can't be far away now!
17
Girls 5/6A Reserve vs Joondalup Lakers (Lost 0 - 1)
Best: Team effort
It was a misty start to the day as the girls took on Joondalup Lakers at
Freo. The Lakers scored in the first half as the girls were a little slow out of
the blocks. The second half was a much tighter contest and the girls were
unlucky not to score through repeated short corners.
Boys 5/6B (Gold) vs UWA (Drew 0 - 0)
Best: B. McVeigh, B. Gillett, M. Odingo
Great defensive effort for a nil draw. We nearly scored a goal at the end to
win but we wouldn't have been in the game without a great game from our
full backs and half backs.
Boys 5/6B (White) vs UWA (Lost 0 - 2)
Today the boys played really well just couldn't score goals. The passing
between players is improving and there was a lot of action when going
forward. When the goals start coming look out opposition. Best player
today was Levi who worked hard as lhb all game. Second player was
Archie who was relentless in attack.

Boys 5/6 Regional (Gold) - BYE
Boys 5/6 Regional (Sand) vs Canning (Won 1 - 0)
Best: S. Beck, L. Drake-Brockman, Z. Swinton
Goals: S. Beck
The team played a great game all round with a great early goal putting us
in the lead for the entire match. Lots of good passing and talk, especially
during the second half. It was unfortunate that we couldn't finish a few
more opportunities, definitely something to work on at training! Plenty of
shooting and work on using the half backs and wings during this week’s
training! Great job guys.
18
Girls 5/6 Regional (Gold) (Maroon) vs Melville White (Lost 1 - 2)
Goals: N. Champion
Well the girls have started bonding and called themselves 'The Killer
Cupcakes'. Despite an interrupted pre-season training the Cupcakes are just
getting to know each other and coach Glen. They had a fabulous first game
and fought so very hard but lost 2-1 against Melville Regional Whites.
The girls set off to a great attacking first half with loads of energy and
some great tackling. Taylor consistently tackled well and cleared the ball
into our attacking half. After lots of heart the girls got into the D and Nikki
scored the first goal from some strong help from Elena. The girls continued
to work hard but the game see-sawed into defence often. We saw some
cracking hits from Lily in FB with good back up and positioning from
Jordan. Anneka shone in goals with 2 fantastic saves but unluckily 2
slipped through.
The second showed the girls continuing to fight hard in the attacking 25
but just couldn't convert into goals. Some terrific positioning play from
Georgia and great forward pushing and tackling from Charlie. The girls
executed the first Short corner with panache with good stopping and hitting
from Tessa and Olivia. Sacha had a never-give-up attitude which reflected
in all the girls.
Well done KCs
Girls 5/6 Regional (Gold) (Maroon) vs WASPS (Won 1 - 0)
Goals: C. Templeman
Melville Maroons are showing improvement with each game played.
Today was their first victory and whether in defence or attack each team
member fought well. It was pleasing to see the team spend more time in
attack and starting to show improvement in looking for their teammates to
pass to. They also improved at backing and supporting each other. All the
team fought hard through the whole game. Continued practise and working
as a team will result in much improvement as the season progresses.
