UFC Fighter Motivational Talk
Australian based UFC fighters, Richie Walsh and
Brendan O’Reilly, spoke on the importance of
following your dreams and working towards your
goals.
The importance of fitness and diet, avoiding
temptations like drinking alcohol and partying,
discipline and respect were also spoken about
and how hard the fighters worked to gain their
UFC contract.
UNE OPEN DAY
WORK EXPERIENCE
Students from Years 11 and 12 had the opportunity
to experience university life when they attended
the University of New England (UNE) Open Day on
Friday 6th May. UNE was established in the 1920s
by Sydney University and is the oldest university
in Australia outside a capital city. The large
campus covers 74 hectares and provides modern
academic facilities, including the School of Rural
medicine and an excellent and affordable range
of residential college accommodation. College
tours were conducted by current UNE students
and breakfast was provided in Austen College.
Our
students
were
able
to
access
information directly from academic staff
representing all faculties of the university,
to tour individual departments for hands-on
experiences and to meet current students.
The day was a great source of information and motivation to help students with the
decisions and challenges ahead. The Univers
ity of Newcastle Open Day in August will provide
another opportunity for students to learn
more about their post-secondary school
options, to help with decision making and to
inspire them to study hard to achieve their goals.
Parents of Year 10 students should have
received a Work Experience information
package by mail during the last week. As
mentioned in the previous newsletter,
students and parents will be responsible for making contact with employers
regarding their request for placement
and for negotiating a suitable date. All
necessary documentation has been
included in the package. Many students
have already started the process and are
planning some interesting experiences.
CAREERS MARKET
Students from Years 10-12 attened
the
Tamworth
Regional
Career
&
Business Expo on Wednesday 18th May.
Over ninety exhibitors were available to
provide students with information about
jobs, training and further education. For
Year 10 students in particular events like
this combined with work experience can
help them with senior subject selection
later in the year.

Students who work
to the core beliefs
of the school, be

H

Exams
Year 11 are currently
sitting their half

Activities
On Friday 6th May
our Cross Country
Carnival was held.
This
event
was
colourful
and
staff and students
who
participated
thoroughly enjoyed
the afternoon. I
would like to thank
Miss
Small
and
the PE staff who
organised another
very smoothly run
carnival.
The Athletics Carnival
will be held on 10th
June.
After the
tremendous success
of hosting carnivals
back on the school
site last year, we will
EXCELLENCE
be conducting the
carnival here again
this year. Parents are
welcome to come
and watch students
participate.
The South School
and Zone Primary
Carnivals will be held
here shortly after
ours. We will continue
to
upgrade
our
sporting facilities to
be able to work with
our partner primary
schools and support
the community of
Gunnedah.
E
ligibility to
participate in
sporting and extra
curricula activities
We have a high
expectation
about
student
behaviour
and students being
good citizens. They
should
meet
all
requirements
with
respect to attending
class,
completing
assessment
tasks,
consistently wearing
school uniform, etc.
Students who are
not meeting these
expectations
put
themselves in danger
of being placed on
the “exclusion list”
and not being able to
participate in these
activities until the
problem is corrected.

HOMEWORK AND STUDY
Homework is a valuable part of education.
Not only does it provide an opportunity
to practise and extend work done in class
but it also provides training for students
in planning and time management. By
WWWfostering a positive workethic and habits of study at home and at school, skills and
understanding improve.
The Schoolatoz website www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au offers practical help for
parents in relation to home study. It has
subject specific tips as well as advice and
resources on homework, wellbeing and
technology.
As we are well into Term 2, most students
should be completing regular homework
and revising for the Half Yearly Exams.
SENIOR STUDY PROGRAM
Gunnedah HS senior students have
the support of the Senior Study and
WWMrs Watson to help them develop study
programs and to provide advice on assessment tasks and examination preparation.
All senior students who do not have a
timetabled class should be in the Senior
Study and should be prepared to revise
class work to consolidate their skills and
understanding. Students can ask their
teachers for subject specific study guides
or revision activities in order to maximise
the benefits of this wonderful resource.
