Love is Our Mission
Rev. Chip Hines
Pastor
Love is the mission.
This should be and can be our motto. The mission of the Church is to show people the love of God, to bring people to
heaven, to help people grow in holiness so that they can be saints. It all begins with love. We read in Scripture that
God is love so it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the mission is love.
But the other word that I’d like to highlight today is mission. We are a missionary people, we don’t stop being missionary because the culture knows about Christianity. We continue to be missionary even when this is the case, or at least
we should be. One could say that over the last 55 years we have lost sight of the need to be missionaries to the culture
around us. We, Catholics, had become complacent in our missionary duties because we thought we had made it, especially in 1960 when the nation elected it’s first Catholic president. Catholics around the country were proud of this
because for many years we had been discriminated against, mostly because to be Catholic was also to be of an ethnic
group, usually Irish or Italian. We don’t have to go back too many years to note that businesses used to have signs in
their windows saying “No Irish Need Apply” for a job opening. So the success of John Kennedy in 1960 seemed like the
pinnacle, and most Catholic homes had a picture of the Pope (John XXIII) and the President (JFK) on their walls. Those
were heady times for the American Catholic.
Since then, not so much. The number of Catholics practicing their faith has dwindled, and when I say “practice their
faith” I’m really just talking about the bare minimum of going to Mass each week. I had someone recently inquire if
missing Mass was still a mortal sin. The answer is still yes. Since Vatican II the Church in the United States has been in
a pretty steady free fall and I guess I’m trying to say we need to stop this free fall before it’s too late. That’s where we
come in.
We as Catholics who do go to Mass and who do practice our faith need to begin the journey inward. We need to look
within ourselves and ask the tough questions: Am I doing enough to be a missionary in the world? Do I pray outside
of Mass? Do I believe all the tenets of the faith and do I profess them? Am I a witness to others of my faith? There are
many more questions we need to ask ourselves, but I truly I believe we start with prayer.
If we don’t have a prayer life, I’m not sure we can be effective evangelizers so that is the place to start. We all need
to make sure we are enriching our relationship with Jesus Christ in prayer, in true communion with the Savior. I am
convinced that without daily prayer our efforts will not get the traction we need and so I beg you to enhance your
prayer life, to make 15, 30 or 60 minutes a day available to God. This will not only enrich your life but also the life of
the parish and the collaborative. I pray for you every day, let us continue to grow in our love for each other by giving in
to the one who loves us more than we can know.
Peace.
Second Collection:
Catholic University
This week’s second collection supports The Catholic
University of America (CUA) and its scholarship fund for
needy students. CUA, located in Washington, D.C., is the
national university of the Catholic Church. Many priests
and professional lay ministers throughout the US obtain
their education from CUA. For more information, please
visit www.cua.edu. Blessed Sacrament will hold this
special collection next week.
Support Your Priests
On September 20, the diocese-wide collection will support the health and well-being of our 614 Boston priests.
Our priests have been there when we needed them.
Now, it is our turn to help fulfill the promises made to
ensure an appropriate level of care and quality of life
for them when they need us. All are welcome to make
a gift online at www.clergyfunds.org or use the in-pew
envelopes provided. You also can make a gift by texting
the word PRIEST to 56512 (Data and message rates may
apply). Thank you in advance for your generous support
of our priests.
Collaborative Baptism
Team
We have a wonderful team of volunteers for our baptismal program who help with behind the scenes or assist
with classes. We’re hoping to grow our team and are
looking for a few more adults to help, either as couples
or as individuals. You can help facilitate a small group
discussion or give a brief talk sharing your family’s experience of baptism at our monthly class or assist with
the baptism ceremony. The schedule will rotate so you
are not committed to every class or baptism ceremony. Keep in mind that a brief training will be provided so
no prior experience or particular knowledge is required! Want to help but aren’t sure what you’d like to do? Or
want more information? Contact Margaret Manning,
[email protected], 508-921-1028 ext. 1007
For Your Marriage
Jesus healed the deaf man. Through faith, Jesus can
bring wholeness to your marriage. Renew, refresh and
rekindle your marriage on one of the upcoming Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekends on October 23–25
and December 4–6. For more information call Steve
and Michelle O’Leary at 1-800-710-WWME, visit us www.
wwme.org, or at www.facebook.com/Wwmema
Share Your Faith
As we begin a new year sharing our faith with the young
people of our parishes, please consider becoming a
catechist, or faith teacher. Teachers are needed at all
grade levels. As a catechist, you are responding to a
call to share the gift of faith with others, even as you
deepen your own. Because of your willingness to share
your time and faith with the children and families of
our parish, they will grow in knowledge, connect their
faith to life experiences and begin to practice the skills
of discipleship. We are grateful that we have many returning catechists. Please consider joining this joyful
important ministry. You may even team up and share a
class. Training, materials and babysitting will be provided. If you are interested or have questions please contact Karen Brady at 508-921-1028 ext. 2008 or kbrady@

Disciples in Mission
Two weeks ago we published in the bulletin the draft
of the first part of the Pastoral Plan for the Matthew
13 Collaborative that is currently being created under
the auspices of the Disciples in Mission process. If you
missed that bulletin or if you’d like another opportunity
to comment or ask a question, you may read the statements and submit feedback on the collaborative web
site at www.Matt13Catholic.org/pastoralplan.

Due to road construction, the 42nd annual Walpole Labor Day Road
Race will pass in front of Blessed Sacrament Church for the first time on
Monday, September 7. We’ve been asked to provide a water station to
the runners, but we need your help to represent the Blessed Sacrament
community! Come out to get a free t-shirt, cheer on some runners (including parishioners), and listen to fun music on Labor Day. Meet at the
church at 9:45am on Monday and then get ready to show some Blessed Sacrament spirit cheering on the runners.
Blue Mass Commemorates 9/11
On Friday, September 11, the Walpole Knights of Columbus #1319 will
sponsor a Blue Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church at 10am. As chaplain
for the Knights, Fr. Chip will be celebrant. A Blue Mass is a tribute to the
blue-colored uniforms of police officers, firefighters, emergency medical providers and law enforcement officers. This has become increasingly popular across the country since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This Blue Mass honors those who have fallen in the line of
duty and those currently serving in our local and national defense of
our country.

Book Club
Blessed Sacrament Book Club meets next on Tuesday, September 8 at 7:30pm
in the Community Room. The book selected for discussion is The Light Between
Oceans by M.L. Stedman. Tom Sherbourne is a lighthouse keeper on a tiny island
off the coast of Western Australia. When a baby washes up in a rowboat, he and
his wife decide to raise the child, as their own. The baby seems like a gift from
God, and the couple’s reasoning for keeping her seduces the reader into entering
the waters of treacherous morality. Newcomers are always welcome.
Hope for a Better Tomorrow
Blessed Sacrament Parish is offering a 10-week program facilitated by
a group of Catholics who have themselves endured separation and
divorce, offering support and healing for those who have experienced
a failed marriage and hope for the prospect of better tomorrows, by
discussing subjects such as anger, self-image, loneliness, blame and
guilt. The program will meet on Sunday evenings, 7 to 8:30pm, in the
Community Room, Sept 13 through Nov 15. If interested in learning
more or to sign up for this program , please contact Jeanie Mattila at
508 384-8779 or [email protected], or John Meuleman at 781
982-6097 or [email protected]. Sign up is required by Sept 8.

for their selfless service to us and our country. We ask
this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
Please remember our military in your prayers. To add or
remove a name, call Margaret 508-668-4700 x1007.
Remember in Your Prayers
Each week during the Prayer of the Faithful at Mass, we
pray for those in our community who are sick. If you
have a family member whose name should be added
to the prayer list, please contact Margaret Manning at
[email protected] or 508-668-4700 x1007.
We kindly request that only immediate family members
of the sick add names to the list.
Through our parish prayer line, we also remember
all our shut-ins, our unemployed, our sick, our grieving, and our own parish dead, including Audrey Johnston, whose funeral was this past weekt. Call 508668-2448 with your prayer intentions or to join the
prayer line.
Second Collection
This week’s second collection will be the monthly Balance the Budget collection, typically held on the first
Sunday of each month, and is used to do just that: balance our operating budget. The weekly collection has
not kept up with skyrocketing expenses, especially insurance, salaries, and utilities, and so the monthly Balance the Budget collection helps to offset the deficit.
Many thanks for your generosity!
We invite you to sing the Eucharistic Acclamations with
us during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. If you attend the
4pm, 8am, and 11am Masses, you can locate the music
in the pew hymnal, #864, 866, 868, 869 (Mass of the Resurrection.) For the 9:30am Mass the music is found at
#874, 876, 878, 879 (Mass of Renewal.) Please lift your
voices in song!
Parish Musical Opportunities for
Youth & Children
Children love to participate in the Mass. Joining one of
our parish choirs is a fun and easy way to encourage
your kids not only to attend Mass, but to enjoy it, too.
We have offerings for all students from K-12. For more
information please contact Erica Johnson, the parish
music director, at [email protected]. There
will be a special Open House and Pizza Party for both
the Children’s and Youth Choirs on Thursday, Sept. 10
5–6:30pm in the church Sacristy and Community Room.
Children’s Choir (K–Grade 2) – Susan Glancy, director
In addition to learning how to sing with others, our
youngest choristers will nurture their faith in song. They
will sing with printed music and also by heart and become acquainted with musical ideas and customs.
They join the Youth Choir for rehearsal once a month on
Thursday afternoon during the school year. They sing
for the 9:30 am Family Mass on the first Sunday of each
month.
Youth Choir (Grades 3–8) – Susan Glancy, director
The goal of the Youth Choir is to teach children the language of music and artistic expression within the context of a Catholic Christian community of faith. As the
singers progress in musicianship and liturgical knowledge, they are assigned roles of responsibility and leadership, including cantoring. They rehearse weekly on
Thursdays from 5–6pm and sing for the 9:30am Family
Mass every week.
Teen Handbell Choir (Grades 7–12) – Erica Johnson,
director
This is the first year we are offering a handbell choir specifically for the youth. Handbells are a fun instrument,
with most ringers having charge over at least two bells/
notes at a time, but sometimes more! There is no need
to have prior experience with music or to be able to
read music as we will begin with the initial steps together. The rehearsals will be weekly on Sunday evenings
in the balcony of the church from 5–6pm, starting on
September 13. The choir will ring for Mass about once
a month or every six weeks. There are spots for roughly
11 ringers. This is a fun way to experience sacred music
and to participate in the Mass!

A Model Voice
I grew up in a small church community in North Carolina, where I was fortunate to be surrounded by a congregation
who supported music. The organ and choir were heard every week and hymn singing was strong. Every person in the
church sang. When it was time to sing the hymns, the whole congregation picked up the hymnal and sang every verse
with enthusiasm. Some would even sing in harmony in the pews. Yet one voice in particular made a huge impression
on me.
My father has an ear for music—he has his favorite composers and styles (the first time we ever had a tape player in
the family car, we listened to polkas and marches for months!) While he was never formally trained in music, he listens
and learns tunes quickly and is a very accurate toe-tapper. For many years I sat next to him at church and sang hymns
with him. He may have been the first person to show me how to follow the verses of a hymn, pointing with his finger to
the text while singing the melody. And he sang every hymn every week—just as the entire congregation did. While this
may not seem like a huge achievement to some, my father’s steadfast attendance and singing in church modeled for
me devotion to faith, community, and to God from my earliest years. And I remember this vividly more than 30 years
later.
Have you ever considered how singing about your faith increases the strength of your discipleship? Your singing in the
pew inspires your family and those close by to you in the church, no doubt. Parents who sing in church model it for
their families, and more importantly, pass on this important form of prayer to the next generation. I encourage you to
sing our hymns and acclamations during Mass, no matter what type of voice you have. Your faith will grow and flourish within the community.
—Dr. Erica Johnson, Director of Pastoral Music, Blessed Sacrament Parish
Message of the Week
Mark 7:31-37
“He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his
tongue.” Jesus could have healed this deaf man another way. He could have spoken a powerful word or, for that
matter, just silently willed that the man’s health be restored. It wasn’t uncommon for Jesus to cure people simply by a
quick touch. But instead, Jesus chose to heal him in this unique way.
Clearly, this was not for Jesus’ sake. And since it was away from the crowd, it wasn’t for their sake either. This particular healing was for this particular man. Jesus knows what we need.
