Reaffirmation Of The Power Of Massage - AMTA-AZ
Reaffirmation Of The Power Of Massage By Shelene Taylor AMTA-AZ National Convention Delegate AMTA Conventions have such amazing energy; they take on a life of their own! This year we were blessed to have the convention here in Arizona and, of course, the weather was perfect. Being a delegate this year really highlighted for me the growth of AMTA. The last time I was a delegate, eons ago, we didn’t have the technology that is available today. The voting technology used in this year’s convention was truly incredible and made the whole process so effective and efficient. But what really reminded me of what is so great about this field is that despite the changes in our world, the technologies we embrace, our businesses and our lives there is always the foundation of what we do—we touch others. We touch others in the most fundamental way possible and this attribute showed in every aspect of the portions that I attended at the convention. The training offered to the delegates was about being authentic and ethical, and looking at events or issues from different perspectives, taking a larger view of things. It was about taking a look at how we participate and recognizing that we can change how we engage or contribute just by conscious thought, and how to respectfully take other viewpoints into consideration. The resolutions and recommendations offered up for vote were all made in the spirit of genuine caring for our profession and the wonderful effect it has on our bodies, minds and spirits. There was so much passion in the statements both for and against each of the items presented for vote. The people who spoke did so with emotion and belief in their position, and yet refrained from any detrimental statements towards the opposing view. This has been proven to me by the direct correlation between the success of the chapter’s events and the input and effort of its volunteers. We might not have the largest group of volunteers but we sure do have the best group I could ever hope for. Thank you, thank you, and thank you to everyone who volunteered and took part in the preparation, set-up and behind the scenes work that went into hosting the AMTA National Convention in Phoenix! Some names are mentioned more than once in my ‘thank you.’ These are volunteers who wore multiple hats during the convention. My gratitude goes out to them in duplicate. The Diamondback’s Baseball and Rawhide Town events were successfully attended, ran smoothly and—best of all—everyone had so much fun! The AMTA Arizona Chapter hosted the first ever “National Student Day” at the convention. This event was very well attended by over two hundred students from all over Arizona. Jensen Mesa Massage Room At The AMTA Convention By Sandy Anderson, Massage Room Coordinator At each AMTA National Convention, the host chapter provides a Massage Room in which people have a chance to rest, relax and rejuvenate from all the stresses of travel, and the hustle and bustle of the convention. In the Arizona Chapter’s Massage Room, integrated massage therapy, reiki, reflexology, craniosacral therapy, Neuromuscular Therapy, myofascial release and shiatsu were all available treatment options. Mardana Face Massage, in which a tuning fork is used to help balance Yin and Yang aspects of the face, resulting in lifting and toning, was also offered. Clients could choose to receive Chi Nei Tsang, an Asian modality that involves abdominal massage to address the health of internal organs. The Arizona Chapter used the Massage Room as both a fund-raiser and as a financial opportunity for professional practitioners, and it was an unqualified success. Over $8,500 was taken in and 128 treatments were performed. Since the Chapter used the Massage Room as a fund-raiser, 50% of the fees charged for each treatment went to the Arizona Chapter, and 50% went to the practitioner. Thanks to the generous donations from Earthlite of massage tables, bolsters, stools and disposable face cradle covers, and Bon Vital of oil, lotion, crème and gel from their Naturale (all natural and organic) line, the Arizona Chapter’s expenses for outfitting the seven treatment spaces was kept down to a minimum. Only items such as clocks, boxes of Kleenex, blankets and hand cleaner needed to be purchased. There is no doubt that the success of the Massage Room was due to the high skill level and professionalism of all the practitioners who performed the treatments. Only positive feedback was heard from clients, and, due to word of mouth traveling through the rest of the convention, all available treatment times were rapidly booked. The Arizona Chapter wishes to thank all of the Massage Room practitioners because they worked so hard “Manning” the Massage Room— and contributed much Lil Hackett (pictured left), AMTA-AZ to the Massage Room. 1st Vice President, and Sandy Anderson, They came from all AMTA-AZ 2nd Vice President and over the state. From Massage Room Coordinator Northern Arizona are Jessica Nance (Flagstaff) and Pamela Byard (Prescott); from Central Arizona are Paul Jantzi (Cave Creek), Melissa Voight (Chandler), Lucy Arvallo, Connie Griffith and Sue Kauffman (Gilbert); Margie Overfield, Moylan Ryan and Patricia Schloe (Phoenix), Shellie Fraddin (Scottsdale) and Susan Griffin (Tempe); from Southern Arizona are Deb Kortyna (Oro Valley), Lil Hackett, Patricia Holland, Michaela Johnson and Michele Meadows (Tucson). The Power and Beauty of Massage (Continued from page 1) I was honored to be a part of the delegation process, and honored to be of service to the Arizona chapter by casting the vote that was decided upon by our state members. I believe that in our day to day living—the challenges, the events and issues of our lives— we forget how profound what we do truly is, how powerful effective massage is. Participating in this year’s convention was a reaffirmation of the true beauty and efficacy of massage. One of the greatest things you can do for yourself as a professional member of AMTA is to attend a convention and join in the education, sharing and merriment with others. And the festivities at the end of it all are SO MUCH FUN! As of September 1, 2008 our Arizona Chapter has 1421 members: Professional Student School Supporting 1275 128 10 8 Arizona In-Touch Winter 2009 The Quiet Room At The AMTA National Convention By Sandy Anderson, AMTA-AZ 2nd Vice President and Kathy Rinn, Quiet Room Coordinator There is no doubt that attending the AMTA National Convention can be both an exciting and busy experience. With over 1000 attendees rushing to and fro from continuing education classes, meetings and activities, the excitement is high and the energy is pulsating. Sometimes, though, it is nice to get away from the hectic pace. The Quiet Room, designed to provide respite for those who do not have time to go back to their hotel rooms, has become a tradition at the National Convention. It is a quiet, peaceful place that attendees are welcome to use on a drop-in basis. Comfortable areas to sit and lie down are provided, the lighting is dim, and talking is discouraged. People can stay for as long as they like, and usually return to the convention feeling refreshed. Arizona Chapter member Kathy Rinn (member of the Marketing and PR Committee) coordinated the Quiet Room at this year’s convention. She and Education Committee Chair Kellye Webber designed the Quiet Room to be truly unique and representative of the Southwest. Based on a camping theme, tents were set up; comfortable mats and Mexican blankets were placed in the tents as well as in a circle around a “campfire”—a machine that blew red and yellow paper “flames” upward so that it looked like firelight. A western saddle, statue of a howling coyote, beautiful Mexican pottery and even rubber snakes and scorpions were scattered around. The lights were turned off so that stars (from a laser machine) showed brightly on the ceiling. The nighttime sound of crickets (from a sound machine) completed the ambience. Needless to say, the Quiet Room was very popular as word spread about its distinctive design. The Arizona Chapter received all positive feedback and many thank-yous. Kathy Rinn would like to thank those who donated items that helped make the Quiet Room a success: Cortiva Institute-Tucson, David and Sandy Anderson, Debbie Atchison, Deborah Lynne Carpenter, Kellye Webber, Lillian Walker, Michelle Cordero, Phyllis Peszek and Sharon Harje (owner of Erv’s Equipment Rental). Your consciousness expands in every direction, And you find yourself in a new, great And wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be. —Patanjali The thing about volunteering is that everyone gives to the degree that they can. Our volunteerism is as individual as our thumbprint. That said, the Arizona Chapter of the AMTA put our collective volunteerism to the test, hosting the National AMTA Convention in Phoenix, in September. Michelle Cordaro, the Convention Planning Chair, was an inspiration to all of us with her committee working tirelessly to make it happen. Everyone did their part. Fun and success was our outcome. Many thanks to the Convention Planning Committee: Connie Griffith, Sue Kaufman, Phyllis Pezek, Kathy Rinn, and Kellye Webber. Special ‘thank yous’ to Sandy Anderson, head of the onsite massage room, with set up and tear down help from her husband David. Annie Gordon was in charge of the displays for the merchandise sold. The AZ-AMTA board pitched in to help with retail sales, massages, the quiet room, and the hosting activities. “A Touch of Inspiration” was achieved by all attendees and participants.
