FIRST 2016 COVER
SHACKLETON & THE ENDURANCE EXPEDITION
7th January 2016
2016 sees the 100th anniversary of the end of Ernest Shackleton’s antarctic expedition. This beautiful cover
designed by Clair commemorates the aptly named ‘Endurance’ expedition. It features 8 black and white photographic stamps, issued by Royal
Mail to commemorate the event, showing key events of the expedition. In 1914 Shackleton set out on his ‘Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition”.
His aim was to attempt the first land
crossing of the Antarctic continent.
His ship ‘Endurance’ sailed from
Plymouth on 8 August 1914. The
crew could not know that the
expedition would fail to achieve
its objective but would instead
become an epic trial of endurance
and survival . The cover features a
stunning image of the South Georgia
islands, where Shackleton and his
team of the James Caird eventually
landed and a formal portrait of the
man himself. We have worked with
the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust in
producing this cover and the stamps
are postmarked Cambridge, the site
of their head office.

A word from Tony
Dear Collector,
Many years ago I had a
wonderful ex Banker helping
me. In reality he was way out
of my league, but had retired
to Hythe and was bored. He
gave me lots of great advice,
but his big point was the one
thing you would love to pass on to your children is
experience, the one thing you can’t do.
I feel this with my staff, I have all this knowledge,
which alas goes with me.
This knowledge makes it hard to look at EBay etc, I
could spend all day correcting other people’s errors.
I love the word “rare”, it appears half the covers
offered on EBay are “rare”, I also like “good
condition” particularly when you can see the damage
on the scan. Another favourite is unrecorded CDS,
FDI or slogan, there is a good reason for this, the
postmark has nothing to do with the stamps. Unusual
illustration is another one, no its not! It’s a Philart or
Stuart cover, I stuck 1000’s of them or “Never seen
one before”, if it was me writing this, yes it would
be rare, but many of these “dealers” only started
recently.
The other problem is forgery, I know Horsmunden
on 60’s definitive FDC are forgeries. These were
done 40 years ago, but there are loads of others. In
our new catalogue we will try and give you as much
information as possible, my problem is I often only
remember when I see one. Pity I can’t DVD my
brain!!!!
Thanks for so many of you buying my book, I would
love to know what you thought of it, sooner rather
than later.
Enjoy this Cover Lover
All best wishes
Tony Buckingham

AVRO LANCASTER
9th January 2016
On 9 January 1941 the Lancaster achieved its first flight at
the Ringway Airport in Manchester, revealed to the whole
of the RAF for the first time. Developed from the Avro
Manchester, the Lancaster is perhaps best known for two
special operations carried out during the Second World War;
the destruction of the Moehne, Eder and Sorpe dams in
Germany using the ‘bouncing bomb’ developed by Barnes
Wallis on 17 May 1943 and the sinking of the German
Battleship Tirpitz in 1944. However, the Lancaster’s greatest
impact to the war effort lay in night-time bombing raids in
Germany, destroying industrial centres as well as cities.

Jack stamp postmarked 9/1/16

From January Flying Scotsman will be
building up its milage on both heritage and
main lines in its black undercoat. In February
it will make its Inaugural Run between London
Kings Cross and York in its new BR green
livery. From here the newly restored loco will
be on public display for the first time.
The locomotive will take part in various events
on the rails throughout the season. A free
exhibition at the National Railway Museum
explores the history of the famous locomotive.
Between March and June the Stunts, Speed
and Style exhibition will see Scotsman star
alongside 3 other locomotives looking at the
history of London to Edinburgh travel from its
early days in the 19th century to present day.
In July Flying Scotsman appears at
Locomotion: Shildon where it will appear in
light steam daily on the events apron with
accompanying locomotives.
Once Flying Scotsman’s restoration is
complete, it will be back hauling
mainline railtours, steaming proudly
into the 21st century.

You Can Own A Genuine Penny Black Used On A Wrapper*
In Good Condition For Just £350
Stanley Gibbons catalogues these at £700 for
the cheapest ones. Ours have been selected and
represent excellent value. The Victorians often
wrote the letter then folded it sealing it with wax,
thus you may get an original letter. They also did
the same and put the letter inside the wrapper,
envelopes were very unusual.
PH0005

£50 per month for 7 months
The 1840 Two Penny Blue
This was supposedly issued on the 6th May though I
personally think it was the 8th May. These are much rarer
than the 1d Black on cover. Gibbons catalogues them at
£2500. The 2d Blue shown is a typical example - each one
is unique. If you buy on flexi pay we will colour copy your
cover back and front and show you what you will be getting.
Obviously all covers are subject to your full approval
I have managed to buy a few nice ones and
can offer at a very attractive price.
PH0006

Buy the Pair for £1100
(£100 Per Month For 11 Months) and get
a good 1841 Penny Red Cover Free
*A Wrapper is the letter folded up to make an envelope.
A much more common way for Victorians to send letters.
The 1841 Penny Red
To combat fraud the Penny Red was introduced in 1841. I
always think these are overlooked as the poor relation to the
Penny Black but they are 165 years old. We offer good clean
examples on cover.
PH0007

The imperf penny red
The 1841 Two Penny Blue
Almost identical to the 1840 but has white lines top and bottom
under postage and above two pence. Many collectors have been
sold this as an 1840 example over the years. These catalogue £250.

to find. Catalogues £140 on cover.

The 1858 Penny Red With Plate Numbers
Now with letters at top and bottom. Every schoolboy’s dream! When I
was young mine was to find plate 77 which today catalogues a mere
£160,000! 225 was also good ( £700). I am afraid it’s unlikely you will
find either but there are still good ones to be found and of course you
could try to get as many on a cover as possible. Meanwhile we offer a
good example at £12
PH0012

The 1870 Bantam 1/2d
The 1854 Penny Red Perforated Star The first major change after 1840 was the perforation machines
stopping the counter clerks cutting up the sheets of stamps . There
are many varieties of these “Star” Reds. They have letters at the
bottom and stars at the top. On covers they catalogue up to £400.
We offer SG 29 which catalogues £35 on cover. These are rather
nice as they were debt letters returned to the solicitor “not known”
“gone away” etc
PH0011
£15
A special postage rate for printed matter was introduced on 1st
October 1870 and as it was cheap the GPO saved paper issuing
a half sized stamp. Again, had various plates 1-20. Number 9 is
the good one. We offer good covers with the bantam for £40.
PH0013

1/2d 1870 1870 Penny Half Penny Rose Red
PH0014
£225
On the same day as the 1/2d bantam
Britain’s first penny halfpenny stamp was issued. A rosy mauve
one was printed in 1860 but not issued the stock was destroyed
but apparently a few examples are known to have been postally
used. Find one cover and it would be worth thousands.
The 1858 Two Penny Blue Plates
Again these have letters top and bottom and plate numbers 7-15.
Not as easy to find as 1d plates and a good long term bet.
PH0010
£50
1858 Two penny blue plates
I find it extremely difficult finding this stamp on cover and reckon
the £250 cat value to be a true indication of value.
I have one in stock at last thus filling the missing gap in the Line
engraved section. This one costs £225
After this issue stamps were surface printed other than the
1847/54 Embossed issues.

brigadier general paul tibbets (1915 - 2007)
Brigadier Tibbets was the pilot of the bomber Enola Gay, which on the 6th August 1945 dropped the Atomic Bomb on the Japanese City of
Hiroshima. Today this is can be looked at two ways, thousands of people sadly lost their lives, but then it can also be argued that this act
bought World War II to any early end and possibly saved many more people being killed.
Whatever your view point, as pilot he is one of the key RAF signatures in any World War II collection. Around 12 years ago we sent him two
small lots of American covers which he agreed to sign. These are all illustrated postmarked on the actual key dates:

The RAF 50 - The Collection
The Signatures all collectors should have
Group Captain Randle was ‘the’
producer of RAF covers, producing
thousands of covers, getting hundreds
of signatures and most importantly raising
thousands for charity. The problem is from the hundreds of
signatures, which ones should you collect, and as 2018 marks
the 50th Anniversary of his first cover, we thought now would be
a good time to select the fifty signatures, we feel, every collection
should have.
All these are offered on our choice of RAF cover, but if you
particularly want the cover shown just let us know.

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN
Special Signed Series
In 1990 Group Captain Bill Randle produced this fantastic collection to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. He searched the
country and found 20 key pilots who flew in the various airborne battles and they have each signed one cover to mark the anniversaries ranging
from the 1st July 1940 to 22nd November 1940. Many of these brave men are no longer with us so this may be your last chance to secure
these amazing signatures.

MANDELA GENUINE AUTOGRAPHS
ARE EXTREMELY RARE
We know only too well about forgeries as we got caught by a scam than meant we had to
refund over £30,000. A leading expert lectures on forgeries and leads with the advice “buy the
autograph not the story”. We, alas, bought the story. Our advice is only buy if 100% sure.

3) The Decimal Issues
1970 - 1974
Published this year this is the first
catalogue edited by Siobhán O’Brien. She
has looked in detail at what we have sold
from this period over the last ten years
and also quizzed Tony and Brian. We feel
this period is very underestimated and this
is the first catalogue to look at the period
in detail, includes masses of information,
with tips, dates and postmarks.

IN OUR OPINION
THE BEST
FIRST DAY COVER ALBUM
ON THE MARKET!
I looked at the available luxury albums and decided that the Safe 800 series was
the best for our Buckingham Covers. The 14 ring mechanism is quality nickelplated easy to use and only available from Safe. The album lies perfectly flat and
you can remove pages or covers easily. It has two heavy-duty sheet lifters. The
luxury binder is padded and the matching slip-case again looks quality as indeed
it is. The leaves are the best available and your first day covers look superb. Yes,
they sound expensive with only 11 leaves, but we are selling them well below the
proper price so they are a bargain.

Formula 1 Motor Sport Charity
Memorabilia Covers (1950 - 1976)
Around 15 years ago a series of covers was started to commemorate fifty years of Formula 1, the idea was to do one cover a
year and get each signed. The series was never quite finished, but now does offer some great covers and fantastic signatures.
For the first time we have been offered access to this great stock and list here are the signatures available.
Our plan is to place an order with our suppliers around every ten days, so there may be a slight delay before your order is sent.
For those of you tempted to buy a number of these great covers, we will still be able to offer flexi-pay

Fluegel Covers
Captain Fluegel organised a series of historic covers chronicling the Second World War. The covers were illustrated by Staehle who was
the best cover illustrator in the USA. The series starts with D Day and runs through into 1946. There are 50 covers in the collection and
it’s getting harder to find many of them. There were probably less than 1000 produced of most over 65 years ago. The subjects was
chosen by a military committee.
The covers are of a standard not seen in Britain until the 70’s and are becoming scarcer and scarcer. For a philatelic historic collection
with covers actually posted on the day history was made, this is in my opinion a fantastic long term investment.
50 covers were produced to commemorate the events of the Second World War, most were postmarked in Washington, however some were
also cancelled on board US Navy ships and in special locations relevant to the event. Covers with special cancellations are listed separately as
these are worth a premium

The Great Post Office
Sorting Experiments
Before 1957 all post was sorted by hand. From 1957-1963 all
sorts of experiments were made using first graphite lines on the
reverse of the stamps then phos lines on the front combined with
graphite lines on the reverse. Then they realised the phosphor
lines were the best and of course all of our stamps today use
some form of phosphor for sorting.
Unfortunately the sorting machine wasn’t ready, this started on the 19th
December 1957. The Southampton S machine.

Phosphor Graphites 18th November 1958. These again use the S sorting
machine and normally come on two covers.
Many FDC apparently exist often with Horsmunden CDS these
are almost certainly forgeries. My recommendation is to take
the 6th July as the first day. This was the day the new sorting
machine was introduced. Personally I think this is very cheap.

2003 Buckingham Dambusters
FDC with four Guernsey stamps,
and doubled on the 60th anniversary
with a 31p Sir Arthur Harris stamp
(1986 RAF issue), plus a Scampton
postmark. It has been signed by
George Johnson, a Navigator during
the raid, and Flight Lieutenant John
Munro who was the last surviving pilot until his
death earlier this year. The cover features famous
aviation artist Frank Wootton’s breath-taking
painting of
the raid, and
would
fit
perfectly into
your
RAF
collection.

Way back in 1993 Royal Mail D209A
issued its first Machin Self Adhesive Stamp. At
the time there were problems with it the main one,
being you could rub the postmark off. At Benham
we did the normal definitive covers, plus a few of this
slightly larger card with the complete booklet on it.
Christmas is right around the corner
now, so I’ve chosen an appropriately
themed cover this issue. This is our
2007 “40th Anniversary of the
first religious Christmas stamps”
cover, featuring a stunning
wood engraved design and five
Christmas stamps - 2 from the
new issue and 3 from the original issue 40 years
previously.

The cover is
finished with
a Bethlehem
postmark.
