Kiku. International Mountain Summit
The mountain festival
The Kiku. International Mountain Summit – IMS brings together mountain lovers from all over the world. In Brixen,
the entrance door to the South Tyrolean Dolomites a network of generations is building up. Passion and enthusiasm
for mountains connect the host, the visitors and the participants.
In congresses and round tables controversial topics regarding the world of mountains are discussed and analysed.
Internationally renowned personalities, top mountaineers, decision makers in alpinism and inspiring minds exchange
their ideas and opinions. Talks and films on mountains take the visitor on a breathtaking trip between rock towers
and slopes.
Hikers and climbers have the possibility to participate in a walking tour or to climb walls together with experts. After
climbing we come together and we laugh, celebrate and discuss together and talk about the future of mountains and
alpinism. The mountain festival to live and surprise you!
Don't miss the 5th edition of the IMS, this year!
The opening will take place on Thursday, 17th of October 2013 at 8.00 PM

The history of IMS and the actual motto
The IMS between history and venture
It is like in mountaineering – also the longest route starts with the first step.
6 years ago we started the "Mountain hike IMS". In our backpack we carried ideas, a vision, an empty paper and a lot
of enthusiasm. We had a goal in mind and we knew, which way to take. But after every hill we reached, the
conditions changed. Thus the route was adapted and the direction was changed. Vincent van Gogh brought it to the
point: “What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?” Today with our very enthusiastic team we
can claim that we have reached the first bigger secondary. And thus this year we proudly celebrate the fifth edition
of the Kiku. International Mountain Summit.
On our previous path we got to know many interesting, impressive and valuable people. Some became rope
partners, some walked a piece of the road together with us, others gave us pieces of advice for our undertaking and
some gave us their smile. And we are pleased that we already welcomed over 50 of the most famous mountaineers
and climbers from all over the world in Brixen as our guests. Furthermore, many internationally renowned speakers
from various areas, from architecture to medicine up to the area of culture and philosophy visited us at the IMS.
The mountain hike IMS was and is a VENTURE and this will be one of this year’s topics of the mountain festival too.
At the end of the IMS days, on 22nd October we will talk about the changes and transformations, which emerge by
taking a risk. At this point we want to thank all partners, sponsors and friends, who helped us to keep the risks of our
undertaking as low as possible.
Besides top mountaineers we also want to give a voice to people who can simply tell us their fascinating MOUNTAIN
STORIES. We will listen to them as attentively as to the stories of top mountaineers because these stories can very
often be examples for our own lives with which we can identify. The IMS is a festival full of stories and adventures.
We already want to thank all those who will allow us to have an insight into their stories in the context of the fifth
editions of the IMS. You are the heart and the soul of the event, just as the over 2300 photographers who participate
at this year’s IMS Photo Contest. You give us the power and impulse to further develop the IMS and to make it an
international, annual meeting point for all those who have one thing in common – passion for nature and mountains.
Dear mountain friend, welcome at the Kiku. International Mountain Summit 2013. We want to live up to our
reputation once again this year, and set trends for the international mountain world. We together with our team will
be at your disposal and wish you a festival full of interesting experiences and astonishment.

IMS Talk
The IMS Talk schedule offers a unique chance to listen to and get a close look at the world's best mountaineers and
climbers in a series of fascinating talks and presentations. Take a plunge into the world of mountaineering pioneers
and unusual characters. Marvel at enthralling tales and follow the adventurers on their journeys.
Catherine Destivelle
Saturday, the 19th of October 2013, from 6 until 7.30 PM
“It is as if climbing had been invented anew by Destivelle”, the journalists and
commentators raved about the young French woman, dominating and enchanting the
world of sport climbing with her skills, her superiority and her charisma. For half a century
she was the predominant figure in women’s competition climbing holding the title of
world champion and having achieved world cup victories.
After having turned her back on sport climbing she focused her attention to the world’s
famous alpine routes. Her solo winter ascent on the north face of the Matterhorn on the Bonatti Route is legendary.
No woman before and after her can register such successes in alpine mountaineering.
Moderator: Eva Maria Bachinger (Freelance Journalist – AUT)
7
Reinhold Messner
Saturday, the 19th of October 2013, from 8 until 10 PM
„High Risk“
To success through risk
Reinhold Messner, who in his business is also taking risks again and again, tells us in his talk about a few situations of
big risk and a successful risk management in various borderline undertakings at the end of the world: Sven Hedin in
the Takla Makan; Shackleton in the Antarctic; Norton, Hillary and the tragedy of 1996 on Mount Everest. For
Reinhold Messner failing remains an element which forms part of success and sometimes it lasts years before we
succeed in an undertaking, as for example with the clarifica-tion of facts on Yeti which succeeded but was not
accepted or his comprehensive artwork Juval which threatened to fail due to bureaucracy.
The attempt to realise visions or to reach your own limits even if an undertaking tends to fail, always pays off.
Reinhold Messner puts acting in the focus of life, which other than owing things is never boring. Accompanied with
two dozens of pictures he takes his audience along with him to the most repellent deserts on earth to show that in a
critical moment only the individual, his power of persuasion and his spirit are decisive and all the gridlocked
behaviours are cut off. It is the mental power which makes us to persist, it is the enthusiasm and the will to survive
which give us motivation to tackle our own set goals again and again: Vinciturus vincero!
Reinhold Messner:
You don't have to be interested in mountains at all to know the most famous alpinist ever:
Reinhold Messner was born on September 17th 1944 in Brixen and grew up in the Villnöss
Valley. Here he did his first steps in rock climbing and started his phenomenal alpine
career. In 1986 he finally became a legend being the first man to have climbed all 8000
meter peaks. But also before and afterwards he set many benchmarks – as well in alpinism
as in „normal“ life.
Afterwards: Conversation with Reinhold Messner and Klaus Zumwinkel
"Leadership in Alpinism - Leadership in Economy"
The IMS Talk with the two exceptional personalities, Reinhold Messner and Klaus Zumwinkel, will follow the
presentation entitled "High Risk". In this conversation we will deal with the topic decisions in the alpine world
compared to decisions in economy. What does it mean to lead a rope team to an eight-thousander and on the other
hand what does it mean to lead a team in an enterprise? What can the alpinist learn from the manager and vice
versa. On the IMS stage we will welcome two personalities who are managers and mountaineers at the same time
and know both worlds very well.

Hansjörg Auer
Monday, the 21st of October 2013, from 8 until 9.30 PM
“Keen insight“
Marmolada "New Wave" and impressions of an expedition to Baffin Island
Hansjörg Auer is one of the most active climbers when talking about pushing his limits on the Marmolada. The free
solo ascent of the “Fish” is indeed on of the most remarkable performances in the alpine climbing history. The keen
insight is however not limited to climbing. Hansjörg will talk also about his climbing partners and about legends in
Alpinism, which serve as his examples and inspire him in his undertakings. Then he will talk about the impressive first
ascent of the route called „Bruderliebe“, which was very intensive for him personally and the first free ascent of the
route “L’ultimo dei Paracadutisti“. Both routes are located on the South face of the Marmolada, whereas the latter
one is indeed the most difficult lines in the Alps without bolts. In the second part Hansjörg takes the audience on a
trip to the Perfection Valley on Baffin Island, which has never been visited before by climbers.
Hansjörg Auer:
Born 1984
The mountains have always been home to Hansjörg. It was natural to him to want to
learn to climb those mountains surrounding him, and he first climbed as a young boy at
the age of 12.In the beginning, Hansjörg concentrated on alpinism, but when he reached
the age of 20, he started to focus more on sport and alpine climbing. He is perhaps best
known for his unbelievable free solo ascent of The Fish (otherwise known as "Il Pesce"
or "Weg durch den Fisch") in 2007 - a 37 pitch slab on the south face of the Marmolade
in the Italian Dolomites.Hansjörg has an incredible energy and passion, and has great
motivation - as Much Mayr explained, "a rest day is for him like a punishment, and he
has an overwhelming enthusiasm." Living in the moment, this is his dream.
Today he is a professional climber and he lives in Ötztal, Austria.
Career highlights:
 Sport climbing up to 8c+ and first ascents up to 8c
 Alpine climbs up to 8c and many first free ascents of alpine multi-pitch routes
 First Ascent of “The Door” ca. 650m, proposed 8b, Perfection Valley, Baffin Island, 2012
 Expeditions to Trango Valley/Pakistan, Cochamo Valley/Chile, Perfection Valley/Baffin Island
 Free Solo "Pesce" and “Tempi Moderni”, both on Marmolada South Face
 First Free Ascent of “L'ultimo dei Paracadutisti” (8b+, 750m) – Marmolada Southwest Face

Your Mountain Story – Winner of the GORE-TEX® Experience Tour
Friday, the 18th of October 2013, from 6.30 until 7.30 PM
"How the mountains transformed my life"
In the course of the GORE-TEX® Experience Tour competition we have been
looking for a passionate mountain person who loves to explore nature in his own
special way, and who is keen on sharing his adventures. Mike Fawcett has
convinced the jury of being the ideal candidate to do so. In his speech he will talk
about his mountain experiences that sometimes turned out to be anything but
normal. Mike has climbed many proverbial mountains so far, and learning to climb
the real thing has helped him open his eyes to a new reality from his past; which
he is now planning to extend to others.
Moderator: Emanuele Esposito (Moderator – ITA)

Mountain.Stories
Thursday, the 17th of October 2013, from 8 until 10.00 PM
Mountain stories – to live, experience and internalize
The IMS discussion “Mountain.Stories” presents the very personal access to mountains and the mountain
adventures of people from different languages and cultures, professions and lifestyles. The living environments of
the protagonists on the IMS stage are different and unique – but they all have one thing in common, namely the
mountain in all his facets as companion in life. In the stories of these people, the mountain plays an important role
as sideshow but also as central aspect of their search for meaning. The audience enters into dialogue with the
narrators and finds themselves again in their descriptions. Or they will live new viewpoints and an orientation, which
opens up questions and encourages someone to think. Mountain.Stories is an interchange between entertainment,
experience, astonishment, fascination and new orientation. An encounter, which leaves traces behind.
Herbert Henzler, Rossana Podestà and Hubert Ilsanker – three lives between cinema, playboy, stock prices, schnapps
and mountains. On stage we will welcome three very opposed characters.
Ex top manager and professor, Herbert Henzler tells us how he lived his passion for mountains with the help of
Reinhold Messner while being around between various appointments i.a. as board supervisor for FC Bayern Munich
and head of the European branch of McKinsey. In this context topics will be touched which are important in the
mountains as well as in economy and in everyday life such as risk, the search for meaning, the tightrope walk and the
path at the limit.
Rossana Podestà tells stories from the world of glamour of big movies, alongside famous actors and directors, up to
the world of mountains as companion in life of the mountain legend Walter Bonatti. Her life is a pool full of
experiences and encounters, which are as different as possible. Her name was pronounced in the 1960ies as actress
in the same breath with the ones of Liz Taylor and Ava Gardner. She posed for the playboy and later on found the
11
meaning in life in the world of mountains even though she calls herself a “non-believer“.
A life without portable computer and mobile phone – that is how Hubert “Hubsi“ Ilsanker from Bavaria lives his life.
The distiller of the hard liquor called Enzian, carpenter, roots digger, musician and book author fills the desire of all
those who can still imagine the mountains to be their homeland for their customs and sociability. He is a guardian of
traditions and of slowness. His working place is located in the very old distiller huts of the Enzian distillery Grassl in
Berchtesgarden high across the lake Königsee. He takes people along with him in his books and stories to his unique
work in the mountains where nature provides for the rhythm of life and hurry and rush remain in the valley.
While they are interviewed by the famous journalists Alessandro Filippini (Gazzetta dello Sport, Mondadori, Motta
Editori), Verena Gruber (Ö1 –ORF) and Michael Ruhland (Der Bergsteiger, Süddeutsche Zeitung), their audience can
dive into the world of mountains, which on one hand they also know personally and on the other hand is very far
from them.

Sunday, the 20th of October 2013, from 7.30 until 9.30 PM
Mountain Xtreme – Pushing the Limits in the Mountains
The romantic picture of happy hikers on sunny trails or successful climbers reaching the peak is all around us. In
recent years the trend for extremes in the mountains is growing vastly. Higher, further, faster and more extreme.
What is driving the athletes to the limit? Egoism, self fulfillment, adrenalin or the hung for fame?
Wingsuit flights with speeds in excess of 250km/h, speed mountaineering with the simple goal to be the fastest or
daring first ascents. What is the athlete’s motivation and what is the role of sponsors and the media in the game. Are
they creating the hunger for more extremes?
Free skiing, paragliding, base jumping, free climbing – there seem to be endless opportunities in the growing market
of mountain extremes but where is the thin line between self fulfillment and self destruction? What are the
responsibilities of an athlete towards the mountain, nature but also towards the average “athlete” who see them as
a role model and motivation to find their personal limits?
13
When does extreme become extreme and is there no more real adventures in the mountains without going
extreme? How do family and friends deal with the uncertainty that every good by could be the last?
Enjoy 4 captivating presentations by extreme athletes about their sport, motivation and lifestyle followed by a talk
about “Mountain Xtreme – Pushing the Limits in the Mountains” with exciting guests ranging from athletes, family
members, survivors, sponsors and media.

Get ready to risk!
Tuesday, the 22nd of October 2013, from 8 until 10 PM
Risk as opportunity to change and further develop
While the adventures of a few living at their limits seem to be increasingly
dangerous, the broad masses seem to be limited within their own comfort
zone and a sometimes not so inspiring professional everyday life. The
readiness to assume risk takes a back seat. Changes create fears and
insecurities.
Risk researchers know that human beings in reality do not always want to
avoid risk, but rather want to avoid losses. Thus, the driver who is about to
loose his flight will be more likely to risk more by driving faster.
The IMS discussion "Get ready to risk" will highlight two positions, people ready to risk and those unwilling to do so.
Not for nothing there is the familiar quotation: Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Personal and professional
developments require an almost exhilarant readiness to risk.
On the IMS stage we will welcome protagonists who have one thing in common, an impressive risk experience. They
risked and know how risking feels like. Their lives have changed drastically. Mountaineers, doctors, sportsmen and
journalists searched for limits and crossed them by risking their lives. This people report about their experiences,
about opportunities, which implicate the readiness to risk and they tell about the addiction to risk and about how
this readiness to risk affects life.

BMW – Was bewegt uns?
Freitag, 18. Oktober 2013, 15.00 - 18.00 Uhr
Was bewegt uns?
Mobility is a basic need of human beings. But how mobile
are we really in our everyday life, in our job and in our
leisure time? What is driving us? The BMW forum will give a
thought-provoking impulse on occasion of the Kiku.
International Mountain Summit to think on how mobility as
a means to an end is connected to mobility as end in itself.
In this context a bow is drawn from the beginnings of
mobility, the movements up to the modern and trendsetting types of mobility, such as e-mobility.
The BMW forum invites people who deal privately or in their
job with any type of sportive activity. Physical education
instructors, physiotherapists, hikers, mountaineers,
climbers, politicians and scientists, who deal with the concept of mobility, or environmental associations, mountain
associations, mountain guides, ski-lift operators and traffic planers.
Speeches:

Mobility for the sake of moving – Prof. Dr. Jürgen Beckmann
Prof. Dr. Beckmann (*1955) does research in the area of sport psychology focusing on the subjects, motivation and
volition as well as performance realisation under stress. His aim is to understand particularly the processes of
motivation and volition and use these recognitions in competitive sports and in health prevention. A research focus
lies on the comprehension of neurophysiologic processes, which are at the basis of motivation, learning and the
control of movements in stressful situations.
After his studies in social sciences with a focus on psychology at the Ruhr-University Bochum (1981), he did a
doctorate in 1984 and was promoted to professor in psychology in 1988 at the University Mannheim. From 1984
onwards he was project manager at the Max-Planck-Institut for psychological research in Munich. In 1990 he
received a Heisenberg scholarship of the DFG and during this time in 1993 he worked at the Florida Atlantic
University. After the appointment to a professorship in sport psychology at the University Potsdam (1997) in 2006 he
took over the professorship in sport psychology at the TUM. He was also guest professor at the University Oslo and
the Southwest Jiao Tong University in China.
 Mobility as means to an end – Dr. Peter Phleps
Dr. Peter Phleps is scientific referee at the Institute for mobility research (ifmo) Munich, a research centre of the
BMW Group. Mr. Phleps earned a doctorate as engineer in aeronautics at the TU Munich. Before changing to the
16
IFMO he did research as professor for aviation systems in the areas of scenario analysis and technology assessment
with the focus on aviation systems of the future.
At the IFMO, Peter Phleps deals with future mobility developments, whereas car mobility is only one facet out of
many.
 Green Mobility in South Tyrol - Harald Reiterer
As regional coordinator of the project Green Mobility Südtirol, Harald Reiterer speaks up for an improvement of
sustainable mobility in South Tyrol in view of the Business Location South Tyrol –Alto Adige (BLS). On the basis of
these improvements realized in the last few years in the area of public mass passenger transport, the aim is to
connect sustainable forms of mobility, support intermodality and innovative solutions and initiate new projects. One
focus in this context will be electromobility. Mr. Reiterer was director of the Ökoinstitut Südtirol/Alto Adige (ecoinstitute) until November 2012 and as such he participated in the implementation of various projects for the
promotion of a sustainable mobility on national and international level.
Talk with:
 Talk with Benedikt Böhm
Benedikt Böhm from Germany, born in 1977, according to FOCUS is “Germany’s most sportive manager“. Due to his
rapidness in the mountains he received the nickname “Sebastian Vettel of the mountains“. He is famous for his
alpine tours as speed mountaineer but now he is mainly attracted by the eight-thousanders. He already climbed the
peaks of Gasherbrum II, Manaslu and Broad Peak. His answer to the question why he became speed mountaineer:
With skies I am outside of the dead zone much earlier than as mountaineer“.
 Talk with Herbert Dorfmann
He was born on 4th March 1969 in Brixen and after finishing school he studied agriculture in Piacenza. After his
university studies he worked as a teacher at the agricultural school in Auer and subsequently worked for the
Chamber of Commerce Bozen as director of the department of agriculture. As director of the South Tyrolean
farmer’s association he managed the association for almost ten years and made valuable experiences during his
term in office. Finally, Herbert Dorfmann became mayor of Feldthurn in 2005. In 2009 he entered the European
Parliament. He has two sons, is married and loves hiking, reading good books, cooking for his beloved ones or setting
sail with his friends.
 Talk with Thorsten Mattig
Since 2010 Thorsten Mattig is responsible for the strategic development and innovation in the area of mobility
services of the BMW Group and thus significantly controls the development of this business field with regard to
topics and contents. Furthermore, he is the managing director of BMV i Ventures LLC and is responsible for the

Alpine option mountain bike
Saturday, the 19th of October 2013, from 9.00 until 1.00 PM
Let's set out together
To mountainbike is strengthening, ecofriendly and great fun. Countless
mountain bikers are looking for an adventure in the mountains in an
extended dimension and use the alpine infrastructure of trails, alps and
refuges. They enjoy moving and look for company, recreation, training and a
balance to working life. Mountain biking is multifaceted and has advanced to
a mass sport so that nowadays mountain bikers make just as part of the
alpine appearance as hikers, alpinists and climbers.
The South Tyrolean Alpine Associations (AVS) as lobbyists of all lovers of
mountains and nature have been comprehensively confronted with the issue
already for years: As road maintainers they know about the necessary work
originating from the use of trails by cyclists, they put up signposts and are well acquainted with the discussion about
legal liability issues connected with the use of the trails. At the same time, many of the members of AVS explore the
mountains not only on foot but also by bicycle, as indeed about 30 percent of all AVS members are mountain bikers.
The massive development of the last years, from technical progress to communication through the new media, has
strengthened partly diverse attitudes towards the cyclists in the mountains within the AVS but also beyond it.
The AVS has now faced this challenge, on the one hand, in order to enable all lovers of mountains, hikers and
mountain bikers alike, an adventure in the mountains as enjoyable as possible and based on mutual respect. On the
other hand they try to prevent imminent laws and complex regulation and to raise the conscience for a sustainable
use of the infrastructure (mountain trails and walking paths). In this respect, during the convention, the AVS would
like to thoroughly analyse the current situation and to present its general position and its conduct in this issue.
International experts will consider the questions: How can mountain biking be integrated into the traditional
mountain sports without creating conflicts? Which chances and opportunities does this option to alpinism bring for
18
the single person, the alpine associations and for tourism?
The convention is open to all lobbyists and service provides in the field of mountain biking, to experts, operators in
tourism, road maintainers, MTB guides and to all stakeholders.

Telemedicine and Mountains
Tuesday, the 22nd of October 2013, from 9 AM until 6 PM
Alternative or aid in the treatment on the field?
The area of medicine inside and outside the hospital has passed
through deep changes and transformations in the last few years.
In partic
ular the technical developments in the area of diagnosis have
changed a lot. The average age of the western population
increases together with the increase of chronicle diseases, which
require repeated medical controls in the hospital with the use of
auxiliary means. Also the medical care changes permanently and
the area of prevention gains more attention and the awareness
for it is raised. But this implicates an increase of costs, which are
always less sustainable and are at the expense of the national
health care system and furthermore cause increasingly long waiting lists. In light of these considerations the attempt
and the objective results to realize the technologies for diagnosis and together with it the medical controls outside
hospital, if possible efficiently and economically. The future lies always more in the medical care outside hospital in
case of patients without acute or with sub acute diseases.
This approach seems to be even more important if we consider those who live in impervious areas or those who
need urgent treatments due to accidents or other misfortunes, which in their whole extent are difficult to assess, in
particular in case of accidents in the mountains. Telemedicine further developed strongly in the last few years and
becomes a necessary, indispensable aid where medical diagnoses on the spot are sometimes very difficult or even
impossible. It contributes to rationalize the intended human resources and at the same time enables a broader,
comprehensive diagnosis.
The area of safety in the mountains and in particular in alpine activities is becoming increasingly important in the
request for zero risk, which however cannot be realised. Thus the prevention and the treatment are put in the focus,
which need to be faster and thus more efficient. The possibility to transfer the vital values on the spot or at least give
some hints and information on the complexity factor of the medical problem referring to the accident, i.e. with
diagnostic examinations which can be carried out on the spot and can be communicated to an operative facility and
thus help to immediately find the adequate health care centre and lead to an absolute higher advisability in the
following treatment in the hospital.
In light of these considerations the founders and organisers of the International Master in high medicines, organized
by the University Insubria in cooperation with the EURAC Bozen, decided to dedicate a conference in the framework
of the IMS, Kiku. International Mountain Summit to the topic “Telemedicine and Mountains”. The scope of this
conference should be to show the whole medical area, all experts, but also all those people who are around in the
mountains or live in the mountains the various possibilities by presenting the recent situation and the development,
which the new technologies in this particular area involve. Of course we will not forget the area of hospitals on the
spot as well as the medical-legal aspects in the context of remote diagnoses and various times also remote
therapeutic approaches. Experts in the area of medicine and emergency medicine in the mountains will meet
together with professional mountaineers in a panel discussion and will talk about the advantages and disadvantages
in the area of telemedicine, an area that becomes more and more a functional aid in the future health care system
on national and international level.

IMS Exhibition
The Mountaineers
From the 17th until the 22nd of October 2013, in the Forum Brixen/Bressanone
Untouched landscapes and the world‘s most famous mountaineers in a photographic dialogue. At eye level.
The exhibition “The Mountaineers” arranges portraits of world-renowned mountaineers, photographed during the
last two editions of the International Mountain Summit, and climbers on par with abstract landscapes. Unvarnished
and straightforward humans next to rock formations. Still eyes catch a wink of nature. With razor-sharp poetry,
Manuel Ferrigato captures entire landscapes in the portrayed mountaineers‘ expressions. And at the same time he
casts longing looks at mighty rocks, as if they were part of us all.
The portraits have been taken during the last 4 editions of the IMS (2009-2012). The landscapes have been
photographed in California and in the Alps.
Exhibition venues:
2011 the exhibiton "The Mountaineers" went on tour trough South Tyrol-Italy, stopping over on the main places of
Brixen/Bressanone, Sterzing/Vipiteno, Meran/Merano and Bozen/Bolzano. The touring exhibition stopped 2012 at
the biggest Outdoor- and Mountain Events, as well as at the ISPO Munich, 2012, at the 60th anniversary of Trento
Film Festival, in Ljubljana/Monfalcone and Belluno.
In 2013 the exhibition will be presented at the Fairs Prowinter and Freizeit of Bolzano, in Meran/Merano, Ortisei,
Innsbruck, Brunico and many more.
The photographer: Manuel Ferrigato
Manuel Ferrigato has resisted cosmopolitan arbitrariness and formed his own distinctive style.
His portfolio is a confession of sincere passions.
Consistent face-to-face portraits and landscape stills taken with an expert eye to the perspective
reflect the close bond he has with his roots. The South Tyrolean studied Industrial Design in Milan
and found fulfillment in architecture and interior photography at first. He has been living and
working in Hamburg for 6 years.
With his clear but empathetic pictorial language, Manuel penetrates monotonous fronts and
formulates authentic scenes of man and nature.

DolomiLightning
From the 15th until the 23rd of October 2013 in the AdlerArt in Brixen/Bressanone
Opening hours: 10.00 AM - 12.00 PM, 3.30 - 7.30 PM
VERNISSAGE –Tuesday, the 15th of Ocober 2013 at 6.30 PM in the AdlerArt
Illuminated Geisler Group©Adrian Bischoff
In the context of the IMS 2013 the exhibition DolomiLightning shows fifteen large-sized pictures of lighted mountains
in the Dolomites. The German photographer Adrian Bischoff is specialized in this type of pictures and developed an
appropriate individual and unique technique used only by him to lighten mountains in the night and to take pictures
of them.
If Adrian paints his special light on the black screen, depicting thereby the mountains surrounded by deep night, he
follows the origins of photographic artwork, however in dimensions unknown until now. Monumental pictures are
created of partly strange but at the same time fascinating deepness and mysticism.
They fascinate the observer and change usual points of view; they revive the normally calm and unknown nocturnal
world of mountains and fire the imagination of the audience.
A visitor’s citation at the exhibition:
These pictures are overwhelming, they show my home mountains, in a way I have never seen them before, full of
mysticism and respect. Adrian has opened with his pictures and illumination techniques a new, big chapter in
photography.
30
The photographer: Adrian Bischoff
Adrian was born on 14.11.1959 in Frankfurt/Main/Germany. After school and high school he
studied economy and japanese studies at the LM University of Munich, after finishing his studies
he followed his passion and was photographer as a classic career changer and autodidact. He
worked for many years as an independent advertising/art photographer in Frankfurt/
Main/Germany, beside he was producing independent art projects. In the year 2000 he won the
„Louis-Buiton-Award“ for an under water fashion series. In 2005 he won the Canon ProFashional
Photo Award, the most important fashion-photo award in the german spoken area. In 2003 he
started with experiments for his „mountain-illumination-project“ with the aim of finding the best
way between logistical feasibility and excellent pictures. Between 1992 and 2013 he participated in several group
and solo exhibitions in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Adrian is married and father of five children.

pled for a pure climbing style without aids. His ideas and his philosophy are still valid also at
present. Not only his achievements, but mainly his statements persist in perpetuity. Today, in

The title sponsor KIKU
The IMS, which since years takes over the role as initiator within the world of mountains, receives 2013 a title
sponsoring.
The premium apple brand KIKU has secured the right to the use of the name IMS for the next three years. Thus the
mountain festival will in future perform as the Kiku. International Mountain Summit.
The acceptance of the IMS title patronage is a logic consequence of the extension of our commitment in the area of
sports business. As of late, we are also sponsor of the exceptional climber Adam Ondra and the threefold iceclimbing champion Angelika Rainer. “Thus”, said the directors Thomas and Jürgen Braun full of joy referring to the
title sponsoring "it is an honour for us to be able to be so strongly present at one of the most important mountain
events and to take part in the development of the IMS."
KIKU is since the launching of the IMS by the founders Markus Gaiser and Alex Ploner a sponsor of the event.
"Together with KIKU we opened up new marketing possibilities in the world of mountaineering", says IMS president
and marketing expert Markus Gaiser. "After the University of Innsbruck has attested us in a study a media value of
almost 5 million Euro only for the IMS 2011, the brand KIKU will in future be able to increase its high profile thanks
to the IMS."
34
Media and brand value of the IMS
In a study at the Department of Strategic Management, Marketing and Tourism of the Leopold University Innsbruck
(president Univ.Prof. Dr. Hans Mühlbacher) carried out by Univ. Ass. Dr. Oliver Koll and Dr. Sylvia von Wallpach, the
media and brand value of the International Mountain Summit was analysed.
The students Anna Gyoval, Johanna Ebenhöh, Katrin Lindenthaler, Ingvild Carstens and Laura Enzinger analysed 991
press articles in print and online media.
The media analysis revealed that the International Mountain Summit is considered to be a central event on the topic
of Mountains by journalists worldwide. Other stakeholders such as top mountaineers or alpine organisations made
the same statement.
The media value of the third edition of 2011 is of 4,8 million EUR, a high value for a mountain festival. These results
are supported by international studies, which attribute a high effectiveness to the sponsoring of this event since it is
organized in a professional way and is also merchandised well. Some sponsors of the IMS, amongst others also the
region South Tyrol with its umbrella brand name and the city of Brixen, could gain a direct monetary value, which
exceeds their contribution as sponsors.
The centre of attention according to the study is the passion for mountains, which is shared by all participants. This
passion is the quintessence of the complete event and is carried on throughout the whole event, in the common
walks and the so-called „Abklettern“ (warming down), where the IMS visitors meet and talk.
The research on the brand value of the IMS revealed that one strong point of the mountain festival is the equal
treatment of all partners (all are on the same level during the whole IMS). Furthermore, it was also stated, that
another strength of the event lies in the variety of parties taking part in the event. This aspect is particularly visible
referring to the visitors. The common passion for mountains is seen as the third quality criteria of the brand IMS.
The IMS founders, Markus Gaiser and Alex Ploner are happy about the results of the university study: the positive
feedback we received until now already gave us a small idea of this result. But now it has been proofed in this study
that the hard work and the investments of the last five years were really worth their price. In times where it became
very difficult to find sponsors, someone needs convincing and comprehensible arguments in order to convince
enterprises and organisations of a project. With the results of this study, we hope to be able to start with new
energy into new negotiations and bids for the coming years. We do not only want to keep up the quality, but we
want to improve it and we want to further develop the IMS. This is possible only in a strong rope team together with
alpine organizations, politics, enterprises and our IMS partners and collaborators.“
