2013 Annual Report - Taylor Regional Hospital
WELCOME Dear Friends and Neighbors: Thank you for forty years of excellence! Your support, insight, and suggestions have made Taylor Regional Hospital an outstanding facility dedicated as a place “Where patients come first”. The healthcare industry is undergoing significant changes. Taylor Regional Hospital is committed to focusing on value, accountability, efficiency and transparency, while still remaining competitive in today’s market, and continuing to provide quality care and contain costs. All of this has to be achieved while facing unprecedented compliance risks and governmental scrutiny. We are very fortunate to have an excellent, welltrained staff, and physicians who are committed to the healthcare of the citizens in our community. This year we saw several new physicians join our staff. Dr. Gary Wortz, Ophthalmologist specializing in cataracts, joined us in August. Dr. Brad Wurth, Oral Surgeon, and his wife, Dr. Mary Catherine Wurth, a Pediatric Dentist, moved to Campbellsville in September. Dr. Cynthia Hart, a Radiologist, came back to TRH in July. We are glad to have Dr. Hart back, and are looking at many changes in our breast care program at the hospital under her leadership. We also opened a new Vein Center in the spring under the direction of Dr. James Watkins and Dr. Graham Englund. This offers another valuable service that patients previously had to travel out of town to obtain. The new waiting area for Mammography was renovated and the Wound Care Center has moved into the main building. We have also expanded the gift shop and relocated the Chapel to a location that is easily accessible to the patient wings. In August we purchased a new Hana orthopedic surgery table and are now able to offer anterior approach total hip arthroplasty. The procedure being performed by Dr. Galen Weiss offers a smaller incision, a shorter length of stay in the hospital, and a decreased recovery time for the patient. This is a procedure usually only offered in larger cities. Another successful Cancer Survey orchestrated through the American College of Surgeons took place in May. The surveyor was very complimentary of the tumor conference, staff, and physicians. We received full accreditation with three commendations. Looking forward to 2014, we are hoping to recruit a full time Neurologist, enhance our Rural Health Clinic in Columbia, and focus on bringing more services to our community. We will also get our first glimpse into the new world of expanded insurance coverage and how it will affect our hospital and community. Our goals continue to include a great place for team members to work, physicians to practice medicine, and patients to receive the best care! Thank you for your continued support of Taylor Regional Hospital. Sincerely, Jane Wheatley FACHE Chief Executive Officer COMMUNIT Y COMMUNIT Y Local food pantry benefits from annual basket auction Cataract Screening Taylor Regional Hospital raised $1,954 for the Taylor County Food Pantry in October with an auction fundraiser featuring themed baskets. Dr. Gary Wortz, a Board Certified Cataract Surgeon, performed the first free cataract screening in October. He is continuing these screenings on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 2-4 pm at his office at 125 Kingswood Drive in Campbellsville. You may call 270-789-6175 to schedule your required appointment. Cancer Center survey successful In May 2013, Taylor Regional Hospital and its Cancer Program received 3-year accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The rigorous on-site review is given every three years only to those facilities that have committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment of cancer. This accreditation, which Taylor Regional’s Cancer program has received since 1990, ensures that a patient will have access to the best treatment options available, quality and comprehensive care, information about cancer clinical trials, education and support, lifelong patient follow-up, and ongoing monitoring and improvement of care. Golfers support patient transportation The fourth annual charity golf scramble raised more than $30,000 in September. Proceeds allowed Taylor Regional Hospital to replace a vehicle for a van service that provides no-cost transportation to qualifying patients to the hospital, Rehabilitation and Cancer centers and physicians’ offices. Skin Cancer Screenings The Cancer Center offered free skin cancer screening in September. Robert Romines, MD and Graham Englund, MD with Taylor Regional Surgical Associates and Michael Bass, MD with Taylor Regional Plastic Surgery performed the screenings. GROWTH GROWTH Anterior Hip Replacement New and expanded services Anterior Hip Replacement is far less invasive because it cuts no muscle from the pelvis or femur during surgery and without severed muscles required to heal, patient recovery can be greatly reduced. Dr. Galen Weiss with Taylor Regional Orthopedic Group is now performing this procedure at Taylor Regional Hospital with great success. The Vein Center The Vein Center, operated by James Watkins, MD and Graham Englund, MD, is a new service offering venous disease procedures. The Wound Healing Center The Wound Healing Center, with medical director Eugene Shively, MD, has moved into the main hospital to increase patient convenience. The Infusion Center Infusion treatments such as antibiotics on an outpatient basis are available at The Infusion Center in a newly expanded area so these services are available to more patients. Chapel Taylor Regional Hospital Chapel relocated to an area vacated by the surgery department inside the hospital which is closer to patient care areas. The new chapel location will allow patients and their families more privacy and comfort.
