As you go around, everyone seems to be smiling at you, and how about the music? I think this is the time that brings the best out of each of us. It’s also the time we give food to our loved ones and others and we fill Christmas stockings. We also pick up a Christmas ornament to buy that special gift for a child. I know in my heart that you ladies work very hard in giving generously so let’s continue that “Living the Volunteer Spirit” throughout the New Year. November for the GFWC Tampa Woman’s Club was a busy time starting with the wonderful Holiday Shopping on Bayshore, District 8 Annual meeting, the GFWC FL President’s Project DogFest event, Reporting Workshop and the other functions in between, such as CSP committee meetings, and of course Fashionollia meetings. And talking about this upcoming event, let’s make our 68th Fashionollia the most member attended event! As you know it will benefit all the charities that the CSP committees have chosen. November was the month for giving thanks, and December is the month for giving. As we prepare to celebrate this special time of year, let us focus our hearts and minds on our collective hope for a peaceful world where everyone - regardless of their geographic location or economic condition - can live in hope and not in fear. And that we can all enjoy the ability to speak and to worship as we choose. Continued on page 3... 1 MEMBERSHIP TABLE OF CONTENTS Linda Reece Happy Holidays to you all! Wouldn’t life be worth the living Wouldn’t dreams be coming true If we kept the Christmas spirit All the whole year through? ~Author Unknown May love and light fill your home and heart at Hanukkah. ~Author Unknown Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a spiritual life. ~Buddha The thing to do, it seems to me, is to prepare yourself so you can be a rainbow in somebody else's cloud. Somebody who may not look like you. May not call God the same name you call God - if they call God at all. I may not dance your dances or speak your language. But be a blessing to somebody. That's what I think. ~Maya Angelou 2015 Reporting Information Page 9 Arts Page 10 Birthdays Page 6 Conservation Page 5 Dates to Remember Page 4 District 8 Annual Meeting Page 8 Education Page 9 Evening Group Page 5 Fashionollia 68 Page 7 Gasparilla Page 6 Geography Answers Page 10 Geography Quiz Page 4 GFWC Florida DogFest 2015 Page 11 Holiday Shopping on Bayshore Page 8 It came without ribbons! Presidents message continued from page 1... Let me share with all of you this poem “Holiday” by Henry W. Longfellow: Past Presidents’ Luncheon The holiest of all holidays are those Kept by ourselves in silence and apart; The secret anniversaries of the heart, When the full river of feeling overflows;-The happy days unclouded to their close; The sudden joys that out of darkness start As flames from ashes; swift desires that dart Like swallows singing down each wind that blows! White as the gleam of a receding sail, White as a cloud that floats and fades in air, White as the whitest lily on a stream, These tender memories are;--a fairy tale Of some enchanted land we know not where, But lovely as a landscape in a dream. Have a safe and joyous Holiday season and a Happy and productive New Year. With warm regards, The GFWC Tampa Woman’s Club requests the honor of your presence at our Holiday Luncheon honoring The Past Presidents of The GFWC Tampa Woman’s Club Thursday, December 3, 2015 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. 2901 Bayshore Boulevard Tampa, Florida 33629 Please let us thank you for all of your hours spent volunteering for the GFWC Tampa Woman’s Club. Please R.S.V.P. by November 27, 2015 To Janelle – (813) 839-7457 Tuky 3 INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH Cindy Bower Geography Quiz Our November luncheon speaker, Maria Quillen, Director of the English Language Services Center, provided us with an interesting overview of the work that her center does to provide foreign students desirous of attending University of Tampa, as well as other local colleges/universities, with the necessary English language skills. As a part of her efforts, Ms. Quillen is looking to provide her students with relevant experiences including living with a host family, learning about the US through a variety of hands-on experiences (volunteer work, tours) and engaging with local citizens to practice conversational skills. International Outreach will be hosting an event for some of these students in early 2016 and we look forward to your participation. What a great way to share information about our volunteer work and to learn about other cultures. If you are interested in participating with ELS in any way, please let me know. The United Nations has declared 11 December as International Mountain Day. The purpose is to raise awareness about the relevance of mountain forests and the role they play in a green economy as well as climate change. This year, the celebration highlights mountain farming, especially products like coffee, cocoa and beans. Thus, this month’s geography quiz focuses on a few of the most famous mountains in the world. Can you name these mountains? This 376 meter-high cone-shaped mountain, one of the most widely known symbols of Japan, is actually a volcano that last erupted in 1707. Located 100 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, this world heritage site is snowcapped several months of the year. Located in the northern part of Tanzania, this mountain is the highest freestanding mountain in the world (in other words, it is not part of a mountain range). It was the subject of a famous Ernest Hemingway short story. It is also the focus of many scientific studies because of shrinking glaciers. In December, International Outreach will donate a pair of goats, via OxFam America, to a needy family overseas. If you are looking to give a meaningful gift this year, please check out the OxFam website. You can donate a variety of gifts on behalf of friends or loved ones and they will receive a card acknowledging your very special gift. The first winter Olympics were held on this mountain in France; it is the highest mountain in Europe (outside of the Caucasus) and has some of the most picturesque scenery in Europe. World Heritage Site status is currently being considered. If Moses climbed down this mountain with stone tablets, climbing up should be a breeze. You can ascend via camel or take the 3,750 steps of repentance. Also, in December, we will begin collecting medicine bottles for Malawi to ensure that needed medicines remain clean and dry. If you want to participate, please remove all labels and glue from the bottles and place them in the International Outreach mailbox in the front office. I will check the box once a week to collect them. We are also going to start collecting used/broken eyeglasses for an organization called New Eyes, which sends them to medical missions and international charities. I will put a box out during the December meeting. Home of the mythical Olympian gods, this is the highest mountain in Greece. Dates to Remember: Finally, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Trick or Treat for UNICEF campaign. Sylvia Reeves, our campaign manager, collected over $250 this year, well over our goal. I hope you all have a very happy holiday season creating wonderful memories with family and friends. 4 12/3- Past Presidents Luncheon – Past Presidents honored at December Meeting 12/15 – Hamburger Mary’s – 6-9pm – Ybor City – 50/50 – Bingo $10/card plus whatever you eat. 1/23/16 - Children's Gasparilla Parade 2/11/16 - Membership Soirée ~ Clubhouse 4/2/16 - Thrift Sale ~ Clubhouse 4/16/16 – Fashionollia 68 – Save the Date – Renaissance Hotel – International Plaza Evening Group Judi Snyder ~ Liaison Holiday Party hosted by the Evening group Hello Lovely Ladies, In the November meeting we confirmed March for the Brookedale Annual Dinner with our Hostess with the Mostess, Renee Brunelle and yours truly The TWC Evening Group hosts a Holiday Din(me) will be bringing the martini’s! ner/Meeting/Chinese Gift Exchange in lieu We discussed signing up ourselves and especially any friends or relatives of their regularly scheduled December meeting. Please call (813) Conservation ~ Jo Ann Leal I can't believe this year is almost over! It's been a very exciting and busy one, too. During this holiday season, there are some upcoming conservation events to enjoy as a break from your holiday chores. Tampa Bay Watch has 2 oyster bed planting events within the first 2 weeks of December, one at the MacDill AFB shoreline, and another at DeSoto park McKay Bay area. Both are fun ways to spend a two hour morning giving back to your community. See the Tampa Bay Watch website for dates and more information. We are planning on having 2nd annual Christmas cactus at our December general meeting. The price will be between $2022. Hope to see you there! At this time I would like to thank everyone who supported me this year during my Conservation CSP efforts. It's been a joy. This event is held annually in the fall and our state officers come to our District to share their vision of how – in this case “We’re gonna do it” together. Laverne and Shirley showed us how to welcome members to our club and there was discussion on how we all get it done together. There were 79 ladies who attended the event from all over our District. Brandon Service League hosted the event and we elected our 2016-2018 District Director – Candy Jackson and Junior District Director Vi Zonfrelli. Our club had 15 members registered and 12 of us were able to make the event. We had several first time attendees (Cindy Bower, Joyce Dixon; Dee Grosser and Sylvia Reeves) pinned by GFWC FL President Carole. After the event, Joyce Hendricks hosted a reception for our attendees from TWC at her home and those that did not have to get back to work joined in that fun. It was great to see our GFWC Sisters and learn about membership and leadership. November General Meeting 2015 Holiday Shopping on Bayshore The 2015 Holiday shopping event was a big success. Thanks to all who donated their time and items towards this. We were so pleased at how it turned out. Our next event will be the Thrift Sale that has been scheduled for April 2, 2016. Thanks, Anita, Jordan and Nancy Left : Chairmen’s reports Right: Cindy Bower (top, right) introducing guest speaker Maria Quillen, Dir of English Language Services Center. 8 Home Life Joyce Dixon We had a great turn out at the Bunco Party and had a good time. We had several door prizes, biggest looser, winner of most games, etc. and we were pleased that some of our Provisionals won some of them. Thanks to all that helped with donations of wine, desert, and their time in making the event a huge success. We made a total of $716. and had a wonderful time doing it. Don't forget the Salvation Army Stockings are due to be turned in at our December meeting. There are still some ornaments on the tree to be picked up for gifts for the children at the Children's Home. There are tubs in the office to put your gifts in and also an envelope to put your gift certificates in for the children. Sometime it is easier to purchase a gift certificate than to buy a gift so please consider picking one up so the children can purchase what they need. We are trying to beat our record of last year and we have a good start. We have donated clothes to Metropolitan Ministries and clothes to Dress for Success and also The Spring. We donated 2 boxes of baby clothes, baby bottles, an Eddie Bauer car seat, soaps, lotions, shampoo, 12 children books, and 1 box of children toys to The Alpha House. All of the organizations are very grateful for the items we have so generously donated to them. Dee Grosser and I are in charge of collecting items for the silent auction at Fashionilla. We are asking you to see if you don't have something at home that is new and not being used that would be a good item for the auction. Also, if you know of any businesses that would donate some items please let us know and we will call on them. Don't forget those Christmas presents we all get that we have no need for, maybe that could be an auction item. After the tubs are cleared out of the office with the Christmas gifts we will set them up again so you can put your items in them. Please remember to put your name on the item so we can keep a record. Thanks for any help you can give us on this. Wishing you and your family a Blessed Education 2015 Reporting Information Dee Grosser Remember our goal – Participate – Summarize and – Send it in 1) Under Membership – Recruit, Retain and Communicate 2) Summarize – Recruited two (2) members for the club. The Continental Army had suffered months’ of defeat against the British in NY and morale was low. General George Washington devised a plan to cross the Delaware River and attack a Hessian force celebrating Christmas at their winter quarters in Trenton, NJ. At about 11pm on Christmas night, Washington’s army began its crossing of the half-frozen river at three locations.
