THE DEACON’S SPEAKIN’
Dear friends,
Another summer has come and gone, and we’re beginning a new school year.
With both neighboring school districts in session, we now prepare for Fresno
State’s fall semester and another year of activity for our Newman Catholic
Student Association (NCSA). This weekend will mark the arrival of college
students from various parts of our state and country. I’m sure I’m speaking for
all of our parishioners when I say “Welcome home” to our new, as well as,
returning NCSA members.
Traditionally, we have held a “Welcome Weekend” following Labor Day to
introduce new and returning members to the many ministries we provide here
at Newman Center. Our “Ministries Fair” typically has taken place in the
church courtyard.
Over the next five weeks our new format will highlight different ministries each
weekend. This weekend John Kyler, our new Campus and Young Adult
Minister, and his leadership team will greet students in the Community Room
after all Masses. The coming weekends will feature: Education Ministries
on August 27 - 28; Liturgy and Prayer Ministries on September 10 - 11;
and Community Life and Service Ministries on September 17 - 18.
To answer your questions about the “new man on campus”: John Kyler comes
to us from the south side of Chicago and is a graduate of the University of Notre
Dame with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Theology and English. He has also
completed a Master of Education from Notre Dame as well. You will hear more
about John Kyler in the weeks to come. Welcome to Bulldog country, John!
Please don’t forget--- your faith community and the community-at-large needs
you to become a part of our ministry team. Your choices do matter!
Peace and love,
Deacon John

the 9:00am Mass for coffee, refreshments, and
socialization while the children play. Everyone is welcome!
Join Bishop Ochoa for a Mass
for Peace & Harmony
With the recent images of what some are
calling a barbaric “martyrdom” of a senior
brother priest in France, a Mass to promote
Peace and Harmony in our communities will
be held on Friday, September 9 at 6:30pm.
The Mass will be at St. Alphonsus Church in Fresno and
members of our African American Ministries will be on
hand afterward to explore other ways of nurturing open,
honest, and civil dialogue on issues of race relations,
restorative justice, and the question of pervasive gun
violence. We are joining the other Dioceses of the U.S. in
answering the call of our President of the USCCB, Most
Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, Archbishop of Louisville, to
respond to the racially-charged shootings in Baton Rouge,
Minneapolis, and Dallas. Please feel free to invite others!
