The BMWMCC 2014 Ride Book provides information about rides and
events of interest to members of the BMW Motorcycle Club of Colorado
(BMWMCC). Distribution is intended for use only by members of the
BMWMCC. Specific details and extent of organization of each ride
may vary and are subject to change. Additional organized rides may
be announced periodically at club meetings, in the club newsletter,
or in electronic announcements. Visit the club website for updated
information on rides at www.BMWMCC.org.

Group Riding
Motorcycle Safety Foundation

•Arrive prepared and on time with a full gas tank.
•Hold a riders’ meeting. Discuss the route, rest and fuel stops, and
hand signals (see diagrams on MSF website). Assign a lead and sweep
(tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who are well-versed in
group riding procedures. The leader should assess everyone’s riding
skills and the group’s riding style.
•Keep the group to a manageable size, ideally no more than five to
seven riders. If necessary, break the group into smaller sub-groups,
each with a lead and sweep rider.
•Ride prepared. At least one rider in each group should pack a cell
phone, first-aid kit, and full tool kit so the group is prepared for any
problem that they might encounter. The ride leader should carry a
cell phone and should make his cell number known to each rider.
•Ride information. The staggered riding formation (see diagram on
MSF website) allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles so
that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to react
to hazards. The leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the next
rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of the lane;
the rest of the group follows the same pattern. A single-file formation is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility
or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations
where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed.
Avoid side-by-side formations, as they reduce the space cushion and
if you suddenly needed to swerve to avoid a hazard, you would not
have room to do so. You don’t want handlebars to get entangled.
•Periodically check the riders following in your rear view mirror. If you
see a rider falling behind, slow down so he/she may catch up. If all
the riders in the group use this technique, the group should be able
to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to
catch up.
•If you’re separated from the group, don’t panic. Your group should
have a pre-planned procedure in place to regroup. Don’t break the
law or ride beyond your skills to catch up.
•For mechanical or medical
problems, use a cell phone
to call for assistance as the
situation warrants.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
I have the great pleasure
of presenting you with the
BMW Motorcycle Club of
Colorado’s 2014 Ride Book.
I am extremely proud of it,
not only for its content but
because it demonstrates
what can be accomplished
through the dedicated and
collective efforts of our
Club members. We are an
all-volunteer organization
but you wouldn’t know it from the
high quality of this Ride Book. You
can thank Cathy Catrell for this. She
has spent untold hours over the past
5 years in the design, layout and
supervision of the printing of this
book. She cranks out the monthly
newsletter in her “spare time.”
The Club has been in existence since
about 1972. I say “about” because
in the beginning, when no one knew
how long the Club might be around,
record keeping was minimal. Much
of it has undoubtedly been lost
over time. Through the efforts of
my predecessor as President, Carl
Thomte, we have located, salvaged
and catalogued what Club newsletters
and communications we could find.
Many of the old newsletter articles
have referred to members and events
from earlier times. It has been very
interesting reading.
Cathy and Carl have done excellent
work for the Club but the Club has
always owed its existence to the
members like them who have stepped
up and donated their time. This year
we have an especially devoted group.
Our current Board has 15 members.
Four are elected and 11 others serve
at the pleasure of the Board. Of the
15, 11 have served in some capacity
prior to this year! That should tell you
something right there.
6
When I announced February 1st that I needed
someone to be the Ride
Coordinator, John Coker
volunteered and in one
month, he pulled together
all the rides you see in
this book. He told me that
he had enjoyed being on
Club rides and that “It’s
my turn.” When the Club
needed to make better
use of the Internet, Keren Kilgore
stepped up. When the Membership
Chair position came open, Greg
DeWit stepped up. Members like Siggi
Pflumm and Michael Kilgore show up
every year in some capacity, bringing
continuity to our efforts. David Adair
stepped up for a third time to be 2014
Rally Chair. Mike Szabo, Frank Ricci
and Jeff Kelly all accepted another
term in their elected positions of Vice
President, Treasurer, and Secretary.
I didn’t have to go looking for Bob
Wagner for Store Manager. He just
came to the January Board meeting!
I told Brandi Newman that the Social
Chair position didn’t require a social
event for every month, but she has
opened her term with 3 successful
events in the first 3 months. Karst
Postma didn’t even wait to see who
would be elected as President. He
solicits advertising income for the
Club and he didn’t want to miss the
prime season for doing that.
BMWMCC
SATURDAY MORNING RIDES
RED ROCKS GRILL
415 Bear Creek Avenue, Morrison
Every Saturday morning at 8:00 AM in summer months and 8:30 AM in
winter months (rain, shine, or snow), members meet for breakfast at Red
Rocks Grill in Morrison. If weather permits, we ride afterwards.
New members, make yourself known—all are welcome! We take up the
back area of the restaurant. If no rides have been pre-planned for that day,
you can always catch a pick-up ride with destinations to be determined
that morning.
There’s no trick to being a successful
Club president. You just surround
yourself with good people. Please
tell your friends, we would love to see
them join the Club – still just $25.00.
It’s going to be a great year! See
you at the Club rides and at Saturday
breakfast too!

APRIL 4-5, 2014
TRINITY SITE RIDE, NEW MEXICO
DEATH VALLEY
8:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison
8:00 AM Ozzie’s, Morrison
The dawn of a new era, our country was at war and a new weapon was
needed. This is where the Atomic Age began on July 16, 1945 about 35
miles outside of Socorro, New Mexico.
The Death Valley trip will consume at least 7 days or longer if weather
over Vail Pass delays us. The plan is to camp in Death Valley but stay in a
cabin at the KOA Campground in Richfield, Utah the first night.
This was a small detonation by today’s standards, at only 20 kilotons
yield, but still large enough to blast a ten-foot deep hole 1,100 feet wide
and fuse the sand into a green glass called “trinitite” and illuminate the
nearby mountains brighter
than the midday sun.
We will leave Morrison from Ozzie’s on April 4th, at 8:00 am and ride to
Richfield. We will arrive in Death Valley on the 2nd day and stay in the
Texas Creek Campground. We will use the campground as our base of
operations for the next 3 days. What we will do depends on who is going
and what they will be riding. There are both dirt and paved roads to ride
on. I expect to do some hiking and photography both in early morning and
moonlight. I am riding a BMW 1150 GS with dual purpose tires. Knobbies
are not necessary. You do not need to be an expert dirt rider and we can
provide help and guidance, but some experience is probably necessary.
The site is on the national
register of historical places
and is only open on the
first Saturday of April.
APRIL 4-10, 2014
We will leave for home on April 10th (the 6th day out) and head home
via Beatty, Nevada or Death Valley Junction. Weather conditions may
determine the exact route and departure date. If Vail is snowed in on April
4th we will delay departure up to one week but no longer. If Vail remains
snowed in for more than a week, the ride will be cancelled.
Dennis O’Neil | 303-810-4910 | [email protected]
We will depart from Morrison Friday the 4th and
ride to Carrizozo and either
camp at the Valley of Fire
or stay at a motel, then
tour the site Saturday the
5th.
After the tour we can return on a variety of great
New Mexico roads, yet to
be determined.

ATLAS MISSILE SILO, GREELEY
MAY 3, 2014
BULL’S EYE & BEEMERS RIDE
9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison
9:00 AM Meet - 9:30 AM Departure
Dick’s Sporting Goods Parking Lot - 6000 Victory Way, Commerce City
Visit a relic of the cold war era. The Atlas “E” series missiles were the
second-generation intercontinental ballistic missiles deployed and active
from 1961 to 1965. They had a unique “coffin style” construction. The
missile coffin held a four megaton bomb, 500 times more powerful than
Hiroshima.
The site is east of Greeley and should take about an hour and a half to
reach. There will be a guided tour of the missile site and after a short ride
we’ll meet-up for lunch. Admission to the site is free.

PRAIRIE CANYON RANCH
POT-LUCK PICNIC
MAY 17, 2014
COLORADO HIGHWAY 67
SEDALIA TO WETMORE
12:00 PM Prairie Canyon Ranch, South of Franktown
9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison
Join us for a pot-luck picnic at high noon, then explore the property. The
Prairie Canyon Ranch property was homesteaded by Frederick Bartruff
and his family in 1873. It is now owned by Douglas County Open Space
and has been used as a working cattle ranch since that time.
We have had such great attendance for this ride and so many repeat
requests, that we just couldn’t pass up doing it again. We will leave
Morrison at 9:00 AM for the ride south. The 71 mile road built in 1920
runs from Sedalia on the north to Wetmore on Highway 96 at the south
end. In that distance it passes through five distinct segments, including
two stretches of rail grade. The Colorado Midland on the north and the
Florence and Cripple Creek narrow gauge railroad on the south. Two of the
three lines were built to service the mines in the Cripple Creek district, the
latter having significant scenic and historic value. Riding these routes, it is
easy to visualize what passengers experienced in the 1800’s while traveling
to and from the district. We will also cross the highest auto bridge in the
state and the unique three-section Adelaide railroad bridge.
The property has a cave to explore, ranch house, barn and outbuildings
typical of early twentieth century ranches with some uniqueness, including the Happy Days Saloon. The Ranch is located 6 1/2 miles south of
Franktown on the east side of Highway 83. Come explore and bring a dish
to share!

Colorado 67 is not technical, but about half of the route is unpaved
county road designating this as a dual sport ride. Lunch will be in Canon
City and after, the plan will be to return via the Shelf road built in 1892 for
the stage line. Total miles round trip is right at 250.

OJO CALIENTE HOT SPRINGS, NM
MEMORIAL WEEKEND
8:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison
This was a popular Memorial Day ride that we dredged up from the old
days of the club. Ojo Caliente is located on Highway 285 just south of
Colorado border.
MAY 31, 2014
PEAK TO PEAK ANNUAL RIDE
9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison
Designated in 1918, the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway is Colorado’s oldest
Scenic Byway.
The town features hotels, cottages, individual houses, suites, and camping. There is plenty to do besides soaking in the therapeutic hot springs.
There are many great motorcycle roads nearby like Highway 4, arguably
one of the best in the state. There are many National parks nearby as
well, and one of the top Mexican restaurants in the nation is just a few
miles away in Chimayo. Open up the fun season with this great ride. You
won’t want to miss it!
800-222-9162 | Hot Springs Open 8:00 AM - 10:00 PM every day
Carl Thomte | 303-753-6652 | [email protected]
We depart Red Rocks Grill picking up the actual Peak to Peak Highway in Nederland, after a short rest stop at the Happy Trails Coffee Shop, located inside
the old wood railroad car.
We follow this scenic route
to CO 7, then make a left to
Estes Park where we can all
enjoy lunch at the Big Horn
Restaurant. Riding options
from this point are open to
discussion as we could continue our adventure visiting
Rocky Mountain National
Park or take CO 7 past the
Peak to Peak junction to Lyons. From Lyons we could head to Boulder,
then head home from our awe-inspiring day of scenic riding.

JUNE 6-8, 2014
FOUR CORNERS OF COLORADO RIDE
JUNE 8, 2014
COLORADO RIDE FOR KIDS
7:00 AM TNT Restaurant, Morrison
8:00 AM Departure
Jefferson Co. Human Services Bldg.
900 Jefferson Co. Pkwy., Golden
www.rideforkids.org
This is the first year for this exciting ride that is sure to
be an adventure. This is a rare opportunity to set foot
in 8 states, cross over a dozen mountain passes, ride
2,000 miles and have more fun than you thought possible—all in a long weekend.
This will be part ride, part scouting trip as there are no
highways that reach three of Colorado’s four corners. 80% - 90 % of the
ride will be paved roads, with the remainder on dirt roads. Anyone with a
bike and the skills to ride forest service type roads should be fine. If you
are on a street bike and/or don’t feel comfortable on dirt, there will be
some alternate routes to meet back up with the group, but you will not
be able to reach three of the four corners.
We will meet for breakfast at the TNT Restaurant in Morrison at 7:00 AM
on Friday, June 6th. We’ll leave no later than 8:00 AM. Our routes will be
dictated by the road conditions, weather, the group, and of course, what
looks like fun.
We will head to the Northwest corner of the state first, which will be the
hardest of the four. We will then target the Southwest corner, stopping
somewhere along the way for the night. Cheap motels are the plan, but
feel free to bring camping gear. We will hit “Four Corners” Saturday morning, then head east, zigzagging our way across the bottom of the state to
the Southeast Corner. We will stay somewhere in the Southeast region
Saturday night, then mount back up Sunday morning and travel north
towards the last corner in the Northeast. We will work our way home
Sunday afternoon, exploring some fun 2 lane roads—or you can get home
faster via I-76 (but why would you?).
Join us for the “adventure” of the year! Please RSVP to John and feel free
to contact John or Greg with any questions.

The Ride for Kids program is a
national series of motorcycle rides
that supports the Pediatric Brain
Tumor Foundation in eliminating
the challenges of childhood
brain tumors, by funding medical
research and family support.
There is no charge to ride in the
Colorado event, but please remember you’re riding for kids with one
of the deadliest forms of childhood
cancer, so we encourage a minimum donation of $40 per motorcycle. It’s easy to raise funds! Just ask
10 friends for $10 each, and before
you know it you’ll have enough to
earn a ride T-shirt. If you raise at
least $100 before online registration closes at noon Eastern on the
Friday before the event, you’ll also
earn an extra ticket for the prize
drawing!

JUNE 14, 2014
27TH ANNUAL RHUBARB ROMP
& NEW MEMBER RIDE
7:15 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison
This ride will be approximately 200 miles in length and will be entirely
paved but with a dirt option for those interested. It begins by riding from
Morrison to a pancake breakfast in Pine.
For many years now, the Club has supported this fund-raising breakfast
festival in Pine, Colorado. Plan on having your breakfast at the festival.
From Morrison, it is a short 30 mile ride on Highway
285 to Pine Junction, turning south at the traffic
light towards the town of Pine. The festival is right
in the center of town where the Pine Grove Fire
Department hosts an excellent full hot breakfast
with all the fixings. It includes pancakes topped
with rhubarb, of course, rhubarb pies and other
goodies are also available. It is well worth the very
reasonable price of breakfast.
After spending approximately an hour at the
festival, this year’s ride will resume by heading
south from Pine to Woodland Park, then west on
Highway 24. The dirt option will turn off north on
Tarryall Road (CO 77), taking it north for 41 miles,
rejoining Highway 285 and the group at Jefferson,
CO. Road riders have done this route without difficulty. The paved only
riders will continue on Highway 24 and take a short break at the top of
Wilkerson Pass. From there, we continue on, turning north on Highway
9 until we rejoin Highway 285 at Fairplay. From there, it is Highway 285
north to Jefferson where we will join back up with the dirt riders. This is a
likely lunch break location for hungry riders.
For those interested in the PassBagger contest, road riders will have
bagged five passes along this route. In order, they are Wilkerson, Trout
Creek (ask at Wilkerson where to find this one), Red Hill, Kenosha, and
Crow Hill.

JUNE 14-15, 2014
FIBARK WHITEWATER FESTIVAL
7:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison
FIBArk “First in Boating on the Arkansas,” is the
nation’s oldest whitewater festival started in
1949. This annual Salida signature event hosts
a whitewater boating skills competition, procraft and homemade “boat” races, a celebration
parade, plenty of great eats, a state-of-the-art
amphitheater showcasing several live bands,
beer tents, and local arts and crafts. And it all
happens along the rushing river banks of the mighty Arkansas.
Come gassed up and full of energy for this scenic, approximately 3-hour
easy ride, headed southwest for a weekend-long water fun fest. Early to
rise makes for a smooth start! The group leaves from Red Rocks Grill 7:00
am sharp.
To ensure your stay, make reservations early. A recommendation is the

GLENWOOD HOT SPRINGS
& THE LONG WAY HOME
8:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison
This is an all-day ride and the route described here will be approximately
375 miles in length. Riders will have return route choices, which could
shorten the route
by approximately 75
miles. Either way, it
is entirely paved. The
ride will leave at 8:00
AM sharp, travelling
to the Glenwood
Hot Springs via I-70.
Arriving at the hot
springs at 10:30 AM,
we should avoid the
hottest part of the
day. We will have a 2-hour break in Glenwood where you can choose to
visit the Fairy Caves, just soak in the hot springs, or both.
We will leave Glenwood and double back to Minturn, arriving at about
1:30 PM for lunch at the Sticky Fingers Café. Leaving Minturn no later than
3:00 PM, riders can choose the more direct route home via I-70 or the
planned route which heads south
towards Buena Vista. The planned
route travels over 2 passes (Battle
Mountain and Tennessee Pass),
on into Leadville, then Buena
Vista, then north on Highway
285. Along 285, riders will cross
four more passes (Trout Creek,
Red Hill, Kenosha, and Crow Hill).
The planned route should get us
back to Morrison at 6:30 PM.

from separate locations this year. The street ride group departs from Red
Rocks Grill in Morrison and the GS dirt ride group departs from Boulder.
The destination is the Lazy Acres Campground next to the Encampment
River in the tiny town of Riverside, Wyoming.
Come join us for this annual ride to Wyoming and a fun overnight campout
that is a club favorite. Cabins are available for those preferring not to
camp. Call Lazy Acres 307-327-5968 to reserve your campsite or cabin or
visit their website at www.lazyacreswyo.com.
8:15 AM Meet for Real Coffee - 8:30 AM Breakfast Served
9:00 AM Kickstands Up
Last year’s GS ride was well attended and full of adventure. Our route
took us through Red Feather Lakes, Cherokee Parkway, lunch at Albany,
Wyoming Lodge, and a spirited ride through the Snowy range. The ride
was both fun and educational as we had a couple of roadside tire repair
clinics. A different but equally fun return route through Southern Wyoming/Northern Colorado logging and forest service roads was a great way
to end the weekend.
The routes are mainly on forest service type roads, so basic dirt riding
skills would be fine. Weather and road conditions will dictate this year’s
routes, subject to change at a moment’s notice and/or getting lost (part
of the adventure). Route suggestions are always welcome. Contact John
Coker with any questions about this ride and confirm your participation.

JULY 3-6, 2014
OURAY 4TH OF JULY RIDE & WEEKEND
9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison
Fireworks should be back this year and Ouray is the BEST!!!
Thursday July 3rd We gather in Morrison, planning to leave at 9:00 AM
sharp. We take 285 south to Johnson Village (near Buena Vista) where
we regroup for a short
break at the Coyote Cantina (on your
right). From there it’s
over Monarch Pass to
Montrose, south again
through Ridgeway and
on to Ouray. This 285
mile ride is all scenic
and puts us into Ouray early enough to get rested up for the next day’s
activities. You need reservations for this sold-out event. Walking distance
from the town center is best.
Everyone has a perfect view as they go off right over our heads. Ouray sits
in a bowl of mountain cliffs and the noise from the fireworks reverberates. It’s the BEST place for fireworks – very LOUD.
Saturday, July 5th This is riding day. The best roads in the state are right
here. It’s GS paradise with high-mountain passes galore. Road riding
starts with the Million Dollar Highway, south over Red Mountain Pass into
Silverton. Roads north and west lead to Telluride, Rico, Deloris, and Mesa
Verde. Or, take the turn onto Highway 141, my personal pick for best ride
in the whole state. End your riding day at one of the many hot springs,
some of which are at the motels.
Sunday, July 6th We will retrace our route out from Morrison, except bypassing Monarch Pass with CO 114 over North Cochetopa Pass. This return leg is 335 miles.
Friday, July 4th Ouray is bustling with action. Activities in town start with
a giant fund-raiser breakfast by the mountain rescue teams. Next comes
a big main street parade, followed in the afternoon by their famous
everybody-gets-soaked water fight, right in the center of town. It’s a
series of fire-hose teams battling each other until one team gets knocked
down. This is the don’t miss event and it’s worth the whole trip!
As the sun goes
down, there is a
parade of pick-up
trucks
mounted
with flares coming
off Red Mountain
Pass into town. The
people are all out
and when the last
pick-up truck exits
town, the fireworks
display begins.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Ouray books up early for the holiday. You really do
need reservations. Call or email me and I will try to keep track of where
everyone is staying. Last year the group camped at the “4J+1+1” RV campground, 2 blocks from town.

SOUTH PARK DUAL SPORT RIDE
8:30 AM Rosie’s Diner, 411 Highway 105, Monument
There will be a good mix of pavement and dirt on this Saturday ride
centered around South Park. We will meet at Rosie’s Diner in Monument.
Shu will be there earlier (7:30 AM) for breakfast. You are welcome to join
him, otherwise be ready to leave from Rosie’s Diner at 8:30 AM.
The ride starts out climbing the dirt road up Mt. Herman behind
Monument. The rest of the route is yet to be determined but will include
a good mix of pavement, dirt, and a few passes.
Our route is suitable for big bikes, if you know what you’re doing, however,
this should not be your first ride on dirt. If you would like to join us and
have additional route suggestions, please email [email protected].
Remember to bring water, snacks and/or lunch, along with your raingear,
not that we’ll need it!
Rosie’s Diner is on the strip just west of I-25. Take I-25 south from Denver
to Monument and exit 161 onto CO 105 west. Rosie’s Diner is a block or
two up the road on the west side.

TOP O,’THE ROCKIES
PAONIA, COLORADO
The Top O’ The Rockies Rally is the BMW Motorcycle Club of Colorado’s
premiere annual event. The Rally is based in the small town of Paonia,
Colorado just a mile off of Highway 133 along the West Elk National Scenic
Byway on Colorado’s western slope. The town park serves as Rally headquarters and basecamp. Paonia is located 70 miles south of Glenwood
Springs on CO Highway 133 or 27 miles from Delta via Highways 82 and
133.
Paonia’s setting beneath 11,400 foot Mount Lamborn is nothing short of
spectacular and is a great base from which to explore the tremendous variety
of motorcycle roads tucked into the relatively small area of spectacular
Southwestern Colorado. Riders can enjoy unparalleled scenery, explore the
area’s history and experience great small town restaurant fare. Colorado
Highways 133, 65, and 92 are rated as the most technical highways to ride
in Colorado. There are also hundreds of miles of adventure riding, three
National Parks, and eight National Scenic Byways close by.
The park features mature shade trees and lush lawns for camping,
support facilities, and a bandstand for evening entertainment. There are
restrooms, showers and portable facilities in the park and the local high
school. Quiet camping as well as limited (no hook-up) RV camping facilities
are also available. For those preferring a soft bed, there are hotels and
B&B’s nearby.
Included in your rally registration fee is camping,
live entertainment, complimentary dinner
Saturday night, food vendors, beer garden, and
the best riding in the nation! To pre register
online or to download a mail-in registration
form visit www.bmwmcc.org/registrations.php.
The rally registration fee is $47.50 until July 6th
and $57.50 thereafter with a 15% discount for a
Saturday only day pass.

TOUR OF HONOR RIDE
TO VETERAN MEMORIALS
9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison
This BMWMCC ride will start in Morrison and will
visit seven veteran memorials along a route of about
250 miles to Morrison (Veterans Memorial), Idaho
Springs (Steve Canyon), Breckenridge (10th Mountain
Division), Leadville (Medal of Honor), Tennessee Pass
(10th Mtn), Camp Hale (10th Mtn), and Vail (10th
Mtn statue and exhibit at Ski Museum). We will ride
as a group with maps and directions provided and will stop for lunch at
Frisco or Leadville.
Maybe some of the places on this ride are those you have always wanted
to see but haven’t taken the time to stop, read the plaques, and honor
those who have served our country so gallantly.
This ride is influenced by the national Tour of Honor (www.tourofhonor.
com) which provides a great reason to hit the open road, honor our
heroes and contribute to a good cause. The season-long AMA-sanctioned
event is a self-directed ride to memorials and monuments around the U.S.
and you can visit as many sites as you want with any route you choose.
Being registered for the ToH is not required to participate in this ride, but
if you are signed up, bring your ToH flag along for photos because if any
of the 2014 ToH sites are near our route, we might
detour to them.

STREET AND TRAIL
6:45 AM Foothills BMW Motorcycles, Lakewood
The BMWMCC and Foothills BMW Motorcycles present our longest running premier all-day event ride. This ride is configured to take you over
enough mountain passes in a day to equal 100,000 feet. This accomplishment is not achievable any place else in
North America and perhaps the world.
The 100,000 Foot Ride combines some
of the best motorcycle roads the state
has to offer with stunning scenery. The
event offers paved and dirt versions to
accommodate the increasing number of
dual sport riders. The total mileage for
either route will be less than 500 miles.
Registration is $35 and is limited to 200 riders. Included is a continental breakfast, catered dinner, commemorative t-shirt and pin and door
prizes. Early registration is encouraged. Walk-up registration is accepted
only as space permits.

74TH ANNUAL STURGIS RALLY
AUGUST 9, 2014
WALDEN LUNCH RIDE
9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison
This is a day-ride where the riders will stay together on the outbound leg
and after lunch in Walden can then choose their preferred route home.
Who’s going to the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally this year? One of the largest
bike rally in the United States and for sure an experience of a lifetime. The
rally includes concerts, races, bike shows, exhibits, organized rides, and a
full schedule of entertainment. Tilford Gulch Campground in Piedmont is
the place to stay! Included are newer shower facilities, food and beer on
site, and free coffee in the morning. Reserve your campsite early.

Siggi Pflumm | 303-674-1425 | [email protected]
The planned route will be to double back the way we came, making the
total ride approximately 275 miles. The route out and back is essentially
all riding in the mountains. Either way, it is entirely paved.
We will leave Morrison
at 9:00 AM andl head
West on I-70 to exit 232,
U.S. 40 towards Empire
and Granby. We ride
over Berthoud Pass, go
through Winter Park,
and past the town of
Granby by about 2.5
miles to a right turn
onto CO-125, a scenic
ride that takes you over Willow Creek Pass and on into Walden. Watch
out for deer, elk and especially moose; they are plentiful along this route
and in the entire area around Walden.
In the center of town is the rather unique River Rock Café, our destination
for lunch. It’s one of those places you need to visit at least once. You can
visit their website at www.waldenriverrock.com.
There is an alternate route home if you leave Walden via CO-14. The
first 90 miles or so are very nice riding, taking you over Cameron Pass,
heading east towards Fort Collins. From there, south however, you are
riding parallel to the foothills, all the way to Denver. Your choices basically
are CO-287 or I-25. This route is also 43 miles longer and all of that is on
straight roads or highways.

DIRTY DOZEN DUAL SPORT PASSBAGGER
8:00 AM TNT Country Kitchen, Morrison
The Dirty Dozen ride is back for you dual sporters. This is a three day ride
with two nights of camping. We are working on the route, but count on
several passes each day, both paved and dirt. Depending on the route, we
will probably cover about 300 miles each day. Expect good and not-sogood dirt roads. This is not an “expert ride” but neither should it be your
first dirt ride.
We will leave Morrison at 8:00 AM on Saturday. Eat at the TNT with us
earlier if you like. We’ll head out and ride over some passes, then camp
Saturday night. Sunday, we’ll do the same. Monday should be a nice day
to cross more passes, then ride back to town with no weekend traffic to
fight! As usual you are welcome to join us, even if you can’t stay out for
all three days.
For more information or to register, contact Shu. We will probably camp
in a KOA type campground (running water! hot showers! etc.), so I’ll
need to know in advance how many people to make reservations for.

FALL PASSBAGGER CAMPING TRIP
8:00 AM TNT Country Kitchen, Morrison
The Fall Overnight PassBagger will be covering 200-300 miles each day
riding on good dirt roads and venturing onto ‘not-so-good’ roads. This will
not be a “technical” ride, but this should not be your first time riding a
dual sport route and you should be comfortable keeping up a good pace
on gravel roads. We will ride over many Colorado passes each day, both
paved and dirt. The exact route is yet to be determined.
This is your choice of either a 3 or 4 day trip. We head out Friday morning riding over passes and set up camp Friday night, then Saturday enjoy
riding over more passes. Depending on participant preferences, we can
make this trip easy or a bit more challenging. On Sunday, it’s your choice:
you can pack up and ride home or stay and do more pass exploration with
us, riding around the camp area. We will return to camp Sunday night and
head home Monday morning, bagging more passes on the way!

11:00 AM Rockyard American Grill & Brewing Company, Castle Rock
Happy New Year! Begin the New Year with this popular “first ride” of the
year to Rockyard Brewery Restaurant for lunch.
The brewery is located in Castle Rock, west of I-25 and south of the outlet
stores at exit 183. Riders from the BMWMCC, Pikes Peak BMW Riders and
Rocky Mountain Motorcycle Riders Club converge on the brewery rain or
shine. Join us!
The PassBagger Quest is sponsored by BMW Motorcycle Club of Colorado
and serves as a perpetual self-paced cumulative ride contest. It is
perpetual in that the requirements can be completed over several years.
The PassBagger Quest requires official registration and payment of $15 per
person ($30 for 2-up), for each level of fifty passes for which the registrant
will receive an instructional packet and pass accumulation booklet. The
registrant must then ride to the top of at least 50/100/150/200 individual
Colorado mountain passes of their own choosing at their own pace and
schedule, then document the accomplishment with a photograph of
themselves, their bike and the sign or equivalent located at the top of
each pass.
Upon completion, the ride must be entered in the completed PassBagger
booklet indicating the names of at least 50 passes and the dates
completed, with photographs. The booklet is then given to the PassBagger
Coordinator who will authenticate the pass completions and certify
eligibility for the award.
Riders may choose any passes within Colorado as long as the pass appears
on a published map or book. Because the contest is perpetual and not year
specific, contestants may take as long as they want or need to complete.
