THEATRE GUIDE
A NOTE FROM OUR PRODUCER
WELCOME
to the Welk Theatre! You are helping
us celebrate 35 years of professional,
Broadway-style musical theatre this year. It all began in 1981
with Barefoot In the Park starring Dorothy Lamour. Since then,
in addition to Broadway musicals, we have presented a number
of variety shows, tribute bands and plays, and have had special
appearances by Welk Show stars. I am especially proud to have
brought theatre and movie legends—such as Debbie Reynolds,
Mitzi Gaynor, Rich Little, Shirley Jones, JoAnne Worley, Vicki
Lawrence, Cloris Leachman, Debby Boone and many others—
since 2009. I am excited about our 2016 season and know that you
will be too! In the Welk tradition, we always use live musicians and
professional actors, sets and costumes, and pride ourselves on
presenting the best that southern California theatre has to offer.
We look forward to bringing you exciting new variety acts this
year and our smash season of standard Broadway musicals.
As an audience member, the theatre provides us with a moment,
an emotion and a memory, and hopefully stirs conversation on
relevant social issues. I hope to promote that conversation and I
thank you for your loyalty. Here’s to another 35 years of quality,
affordable entertainment.

A musical theatre tradition! Tevye the
milkman tries to protect his daughters and
his way of life from a changing world.
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, based on the short
story, Tevye and His Daughters by Sholom
Aleichem, was one of the first musicals to defy
Broadway's established rules of commercial
success. It dealt with serious issues such as
persecution, poverty and the struggle to hold
on to one's beliefs in the midst of a hostile and
chaotic environment. Criticized at first for its
"limited appeal," FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
struck such a universal chord in audiences
that it became, for a time, the longest running
production in the history of Broadway.

Music and lyrics by
ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER & TIM RICE
It seems especially fitting that the first
rock opera, created as a concept album at
the end of the turbulent '60s, should have
at its center a social and political rebel.
Jesus' meteoric-like rise in renown provides
a parallel to contemporary celebrity worship.
As his radical teachings are evermore
embraced, Judas increasingly questions
the enlightened motives of this new prophet,
resulting in betrayal. Christ's final days are
dramatized with emotional intensity, thoughtprovoking edge and explosive theatricality.
Propelled by a stirring score, by turns
driving and majestic, satirical and tender,
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR illuminates the
transcendent power of the human spirit with a
passion that goes straight to the heart.

Musical by CY COLEMAN
Lyrics by DOROTHY FIELDS & NEIL SIMON
A BOB FOSSE dance musical based on
FEDERICO FELLINI’S screenplay for
Nights of Cabiria
SEPTEMBER 2–
NOVEMBER 20
Have you ever known a girl who wanted
something so badly that she tried too hard to
get it? Meet SWEET CHARITY, the girl who
wants to be loved so much that she has lost
sight of who she is. Charity sings, dances,
laughs and cries her way through romances
with the “animal magnetism” hero, the “ultrachic continental” hero and the “impossible-to
believe-but-he’s-better-than-nothing” hero.
This is a bright and sophisticated show in
every sense. Cy Coleman has captured the
rhythms and sounds, and Dorothy Fields the
vernacular and fun of New York in this touching
comedy. Neil Simon has a particular talent for
looking at the truly amusing side of life. It’s a
dancing show too, with great opportunity for
use of dramatic movement. Wonderful musical
numbers include BIG SPENDER,
IF MY FRIENDS COULD SEE ME NOW,
TOO MANY TOMORROWS, THERE’S
GOTTA BE SOMETHING BETTER
THAN THIS, I’M A BRASS BAND and
BABY, DREAM YOUR DREAM.

The legendary Plaids come back to Earth to
spread yuletide joy with the greatest holiday hits
of the ages. FOREVER PLAID: PLAID TIDINGS
is a brand-new show that offers the best of
FOREVER PLAID tied-up in a nifty package with
a big Christmas bow on top! Filled with Christmas
standards that have all been "Plaid-erized," our
boys are back to do their Christmas special. At
first, Francis, Jinx, Smudge and Sparky aren't
sure why they've returned to Earth for another
posthumous performance, but a phone call from
the heavenly Rosemary Clooney lets them know
that they're needed to put a little harmony into a
discordant world. Sprinkled among the Christmas
offerings are audience favorites, like their riotous
three-minute-and-eleven-second version of
The Ed Sullivan Show—this time featuring The
Rockettes, The Chipmunks and The Vienna Boys
Choir and A Plaid Caribbean Christmas, which
puts the "Day-O" in Excelsis! This truly "heavensent" holiday treat will lift audiences' spirits and
fill them with nostalgia for a bygone era of classic
music sung in perfect harmony.

Written by MICHAEL FRAYN
Called the funniest farce ever written, Noises Off presents a
manic menagerie as a cast of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop
called Nothing's On. Doors slamming, on and offstage intrigue,
and an errant herring all figure in the plot of this hilarious and
classically comic play. "The most dexterously realized comedy
ever about putting on a comedy. A spectacularly funny,
peerless backstage farce. This dizzy, well-known romp
is festival of delirium." - The New York Times
