wake up. It can boost your immune system, decrease stress and anxiety, regulate the
hormones that control appetite – and even reduce the formation of wrinkles. Together,

What is the optimal
amount of sleep?
When is the best time
of day to sleep?
On average, we sleep for
7-8 hours per night, although
some people only need as little as
4 hours. Others can need
up to 10 hours but if you wake up
feeling refreshed and have
enough energy to get through
the day, then you’re getting the
right amount of sleep for you.
We sleep best between the hours of
10.30pm till 6.30am. This timing varies
depending on age, with children
needing more and the elderly
needing less sleep.
How can I get more
deep sleep?
Being active is the best way to
increase the amount of deep
sleep you experience. However,
even though deep sleep is
responsible for helping us to
wake up feeling refreshed,
it only makes up 20% of the
night. Good quality sleep is
achieved when we cycle between
all sleep stages - light, deep
and Rapid Eye Movement (REM).
REM, is the sleep stage during
which we dream and is
responsible for storing memories
and managing our mood.
What is the best way
to fall to sleep quickly?
Going to bed at the same time
most nights trains your brain to feel
naturally tired at the same time every
night. Getting into the habit of having
a calming wind down routine 40
minutes before bed will also help.
How can I improve
the quality of my sleep?
Sleep and wake are on a continuous
24 hour cycle, hence the reason
why we call it a sleep – wake cycle.
During the day this means getting
lots of natural light onto your skin,
as this helps to tell your brain that
the day has started.
How can I switch off
my racing mind?
A racing mind is a common cause
of sleeplessness, but trying to stop it
can often result in even more
thoughts and further wakefulness.
Learning to watch thoughts arrive in
your mind and then let them go like
passing clouds can be a helpful way
to calm your mind.
What effect does light
have on my sleep?
The light sensitive cells in your
eyes play an important role in the
regulation of wakefulness and sleep.
When darkness is detected, your
brain releases the sleep promoting
hormone melatonin, hence why we
sleep best in a darkened room.
When is the best time
to eat before bedtime?
Leaving at least two hours between
eating dinner and going to bed is
ideal as this allows the stomach to
empty and therefore does not disturb
sleep quality.
When should I stop
drinking caffeine?
Caffeine takes at least six hours
to leave the body and if drunk too
close to bedtime can increase the
difficulty of falling to sleep. Aim to
consume your last tea, coffee or fizzy
drink by 2pm and switch to decaf
or herbal alternatives.
Is drinking alcohol good
or bad for sleep?
How does poor sleep affect
my daytime mood?
Drinking alcohol close to bedtime
disturbs sleep. As it is broken down by
the body its stimulant properties are
released causing frequent awakenings,
sweating and toilet trips.
During sleep the brain processes all of
the emotions experienced during the
day, especially negative ones, such
as worry and anxiety. Without sleep this
process doesn’t happen, causing us to
wake up feeling moody and irritable.
When is the best time to exercise?
The best time to exercise is late
afternoon / early evening as this is when
the body is at its warmest. Exercising
too late can delay sleep by unhelpfully
warming your core body temperature.
When is the best time
to power nap?
The best time to nap is between 12pm
and 3pm when we have a dip in our
wakefulness drive. For best results find
yourself a quiet, cool, dark and comfy
place to lie down and limit it to 30
minutes maximum.
What are the health
consequences of long term
sleep deprivation?
Long term sleep deprivation is proven
to increase your risk of a number of
health conditions such as obesity,
diabetes, alzheimer’s, heart failure
and high blood pressure.
Why do we dream?
We are still not entirely sure as to exactly
why we dream, but many scientists
believe it to be linked to the brains
