Lakeport Regional CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Celebrating Over 63 Years of Service to our Community February 2009 Mission Statement: To promote the economic vitality and prosperity of our region. Vision Statement: The Chamber will be the catalyst in transforming the region into an attractive and inviting destination for business and a great quality of life. Stars of Lake County March 22, 2009 • Konocti Harbor Resort & Spa The 12th Annual Stars Community Awards Program will be held on Sunday, March 22, 2009 not on March 29th as previously announced. The deadline for Stars nominations remains on Friday, February 27th by 5pm at the office of the Lakeport Regional Chamber or postmarked by the 27th. This year you can make your nominations on line by going to www.lakeportchamber.com, click on the Stars of Lake County banner on the home page and follow the instructions. The same deadline applies to on line nominations. Please remember to include as many details as possible for your nominee, it is the detail that the Selection Committee will need when they meet on March 12th to vote on the recipients for 2009. Also please remember, this is not a popularity contest, the number of times an entity is nominated is not relevant, only the details provided for the reason he/she/they should receive the award. We have 17 cat- egories and it’s very important that you, as the nominator, tell us which category you believe is best for your nominee. Another thing to remember…….over the past 11 years over 1200 Lake County residents have been acknowledged through this program, that could not have happened if their friends, neighbors and co-workers had not taken the time to nominate them. Without your nomination, the committee is powerless to provide recognition. The dinner this year is $50/person and Sutter Lakeside Hospital is once again sponsoring Angel Tickets for those nominees who might not otherwise be able to attend. Tickets for the public will go on sale Wednesday, March 4th. If you have questions on the Stars of Lake County Awards program, please contact Melissa at 263-5092 or go to our website. Thank you for caring about your community and those who work so hard to make it a wonderful place to live! The California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) requires the Cal/OSHA Log 300 summary be displayed from February 1 to April 30 for employee review. A free Log 300 wizard is available at www.calbizcentral. com to help a business determine whether it is subject to recordkeeping requirements. Employers with 11 or more employees, except those covered in the California low-hazard establishments in the retail, service, finance and real estate sectors, must display the totals from the Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses (CAL/OSHA Form 300A) wherever employee notices are usually posted. If there is more than one business establishment, a separate log and summary must be posted in each physical location that is expected to be in operation for one year or longer. More information on Log 300 filing and posting requirements is — continued on page 10 Page 10 Breakfast Meeting PAGE 2 • February 2009 LAKEPORT REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Lakeport Yacht Club Updates for 2009 By Ed Posada, Port Captain Under the new Commodore, Wolf Liebe, the Lakeport Yacht Club has a more adventurous view of activities, as well as renovation to the club. We proposed plans to Lakeport Administrator Kevin Burke and staff to expand the club by some ten feet toward the lake, changing out the windows to sliders with an awning for better functionality. We replaced all rental moorings and buoys, which rent for a paltry $180 per Year, and also added four new ones for club boats, all at no cost to the city. The club is available for rent at very reasonable prices, please call 2635078. Club boats are for the use of members, and also for students, who are learning to sail through our sailing classes, in conjunction with Mendocino College. Students learn to sail, get hands on, in the water time, and earn two credits per class, so we fill them fast. We are one of two certified sailing schools in the State, as far as we know. The club is sponsoring monthly regattas starting in March, with lots of other club activities. We have had races with other clubs, such as the Konocti Yacht Club at Braito’s Marina. We are into a Pirate Treasure Hunt that will take nine months. Clues are given which will lead to a local merchants’ locations...to retrieve a Doubloon, the pirate crew must solve the clue, go to the location marked with our club flag ( burgee ), spend at Lakeport Regional CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 2008 Board Members President: Jan Parkinson .............. The doubloon presented to the Commodore at the next dinner meeting is redeemed for the next clue. The Chest now holds remnant jewelry, chains of gold, dollar coins, pearls, who knows? It is a kick…… and good for local business. We are planning boat poker runs, overnighter tie-ups, and our wild Cardboard and Duct Tape Regatta on the 4h of July. It’s a fun, no charge, event for the community with music, prizes, and just a hoot for participants and spectators. With boats being donated to the club, we refurbish and maintain them for club use. We are looking to offer rentals and maybe charters on Clear Lake to promote boating/sailing to a broader community. Our Flagship, “Egret” was built in Denmark in 1939, having been in the waters for some seventy years now, she’s seaworthy and a beauty in a fair wind. Built not for comfort but speed., she came to us through the Panama Canal, via LAX, SFO, to Lakeport. This vessel was gifted by Skip and Barbara Newel and our members are ardently trying to maintain the Newel’s beauty as they did. We are offering this classic sailboat as a publicity star along with all of the above fun to lure in more tourism to Lake County. It may be an idea to provide her as a showpiece in brochures and travel posters in tourist publications. This is a world class sailboat, and she is available for photo shoots at any time. 875 Lakeport Boulevard P.O. LAKEPORT REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PAGE 5 • February 2009 Why Shop, Stay & Play Locally? Why Should we Shop Lake County First? Here are nine great reasons for buying goods & services at locally owned businesses: 1. Recirculates more dollars in our community: Studies show that significantly more money will stay in the local area when purchases are made at locally owned, rather than nationally owned businesses. More money is kept in the community because locally owned businesses often purchase from other locally owned retailers, wholesalers, service providers, and farms. Purchasing locally helps grow other businesses as well as the municipal tax base. 2. Supports and strengthens local jobs and businesses: Small local businesses are the largest category of employers nationally, and in Lake County, and they provide the most new jobs to residents. 3. Preserves and enhances our unique neighborhoods: Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of our distinctive character. The unique character of Lake County is what brought people here and what will keep us here. Our tourism businesses also benefit. 4. Nonprofits receive greater support: Nonprofit organizations receive, on average, three times greater support from smaller, locally owned business owners than they do from large businesses. 5. Environmental impact is reduced: Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation, and they frequently locate in town or neighborhood centers as opposed to developing on the fringe of the city. This generally means local business contributes less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss, and pollution. 6. Customer service is better: Local businesses often hire people with more specific product expertise, providing better customer service. Additionally, owners who live in the community are motivated to treat customers who are neighbors with respect in order to preserve and enhance their reputation in the community. 7. Local business owners invest in community: Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future. 8. Public benefits far outweigh public costs: Local businesses in town/neighborhood centers require comparatively little infrastructure investment (because it is already in place there) and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores moving into the community. 9. Competition and diversity lead to more choices: A marketplace of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and affordable prices over the long term. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based not on a national sales plan but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a broader range of product choices. PAGE 6 • February 2009 Chamber Member Donates To City Beautification The landscaping surrounding the Welcome to Lakeport sign on Lakeport Boulevard was originally done by Wheeler Landscaping when the sign was donated to the city by the Lakeport Regional Chamber. Wheeler was then paid by the city to maintain the plantings. With the budget cuts made by the City, it was determined the work would have to be done by city crews. Due to an already heavy workload, the Lakeport Public Works crews have been hard-pressed to find time to maintain the area. Roger Wheeler of Wheeler Landscaping has stepped up and is now donating the time for his crew to do the upkeep on this project. A perfect example of Caring for Your Community! LAKEPORT REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE What is your vision of Lake County’s Future? Did you know that our population is projected to grow by 50% by 2030? You have the opportunity now to help plan for this growth so that we preserve the character of our communities, provide for needed services, and protect our natural resources. Lake County 2030, the Region Blueprint Planning Program, asks the question “Where will we live, work, shop and play in 2030?” Business owners, these are your future customers, suppliers and employees. Help shape the future of Lake County and discuss these questions by attending any of five interactive community workshops scheduled in March. PAGE 10 • February 2009 Job Related Injuries continued from page 1 available on HRCalifornia. The Form 300A is used to show the total injuries and illnesses for the year in each of the categories. This illustrates the extent and severity of work-related incidents. Also, it helps prevent further illnesses and injuries by bringing awareness to employers and employees. Temporary Workplaces For establishments in existence for less than one year, one OSHA log/ summary may incorporate all recordable injuries and illnesses that may occur at any and all of the “temporary” establishments. That log/summary for the “temporary” establishments may be included with the central location’s Log 300 and summary. If a company has developed or has available a system to receive all the required accident/illness information to develop and update a site-specific log, a centralized record keeping system can be maintained. However, the company must have the ability to return the specific information to the affected location within seven days. Information Availability The regulation states that there shall be a specific Log 300 and that records may be maintained in a central location if they can be made available within four business hours to requesting regulatory personnel, or within seven days to affected employees. More Information/Forms For more information on Form 300 filing and posting requirements, visit www.hrcalifornia.com. Copies of the OSHA Forms 300, 300A and 301 are available. LAKEPORT REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PAGE 11 • February 2009 Member of the Month Featherbed Railroad Company A Unique Bed and Breakfast Experience 2870 Lakeshore Blvd., Nice, CA 95464 Phone: (707) B-R-GUEST [274-8378] e-mail: [email protected] web site: www.featherbedrailroad.com Peggy and Tony moved to Lake County in May, 2008 after purchasing the Featherbed Railroad. The Featherbed Railroad has been in business for 20 years as of 2009! Peggy and Tony have owned it since May, 2008 after having bought it from the originators of this unique place. The Featherbed offers a unique bed and breakfast experience with nine individuallythemed suites housed in retired antique railroad cabooses. When Peggy and Tony met, they began to vacation in bed and breakfast resorts all over north America. Their goal was to eventually own a bed and breakfast resort. In September of 2007 Tony happened to mention this goal to a friend who is a realtor and within a week had sold his house, an original house built in 1921 by Chevron for a manager of their El Segundo plant. From there Peggy and Tony had planned to build a log cabin bed and breakfast in San Diego, but the fires of 2008 extinguished that idea. That was not a problem because a brief Internet search uncovered the Featherbed Railroad for sale and after only two weeks, Peggy and Tony were packing up their truck and moving into this new life. Tony and Peggy are particularly enthused about meeting new people and helping them make the most of their vacation in the unspoiled beauty that is Lake County. By learning more about the community and actively participating in local events, the duo feel they can be enthusiastic guides for their guests. The best part of the bed and breakfast business for both Tony and Peggy is the communal breakfast experience where travelers from near and far share their unique life experience over a meal. This refreshing start to each day is a wonderful reminder of the diversity of enthusiastic travelers that come to Lake County. Tony and Peggy believe that the only way to operate a business is to completely involve themselves in the community. From being involved in charitable organizations to being a part of the success of the local Chambers of Commerce, the best way to improve both one’s own business and the community as a whole is to become a part of the success of that community. They have been members of the Lakeport Regional Chamber since the week they moved up here in May of 2008. We do a huge variety of things to market our business. The most basic foundation of marketing a travel business in 2009 is to be highly ranked in search engines. Travelers today often start their vacation late at night staring at their computer while envisioning themselves away from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives. But, more than that, there are several avenues that the Feathebed Railroad targets. We advertise within the railroad community to attract those interested in trains to Lake County and have brought people from as far away as England and Switzerland to Lake County. Also, we advertise in some local media. We also know that many of our guests have become friends and so we keep in touch with them through a variety of means. Smart marketing knows that 80% of one’s business comes from a very enthusiastic 20% of one’s previous customers, so the goal is to create a greater number of “20 percenters.” We hope to host more unique events here including car shows and local special events such as the Oktoberfest. We also have a number of weddings planned for 2009 and hope to continue to be a place that guests love for weddings. Office hours are from noon-7pm every day but Peggy and Tony are here for their guests 24 hours a day.
