EDITORS EPISTLE
Well, is winter over? If we can call what we had….winter. As difficult as the snows
and rains can be ………..we do need it! The program for the meeting should prove to be very
entertaining. I hope everyone will bring or wear some of your creations. Remember, when we
were young…….”homemade clothes” were an embarrassment no matter how nicely
made. Hope to see many wonderful fashions.

RETREAT UPDATE
2015 Quilt Retreat – July 13, 14 and 15th
Vina de Lestonnac Retreat Center, Temecula CA
Thirteen members have signed up to attend our first annual 3-dqy quilting retreat at
Vina de Lestonnac in Temecula. Imagine three days filled with uninterrupted quilting,
relaxing, and fun. Picture getting up in the morning when you wish and deciding what
you feel like doing: Quilting all day? Fabric shopping? Winery hopping? Casino stopping? And there’s swimming, sunning, light hiking and maybe a fabulous massage for
the relaxing part. And a wine tasting and ice cream social for the fun part… plus a Show
‘n Tell (with prizes) on Wednesday before brunch for those who actually put their foot to
the pedal and want to show off their accomplishments. lots to do and see in the area and
there will be more fun ideas as we get closer to the date. You can also just sit and sew for
three days straight (all night if you wish) and know that you only have to get up to go to
your meals… how often does that happen?
You can do it all, but sign up early as the number of spaces is limited. Please call Cat
Harris @ 714 390-2601 (cell) or email me at [email protected] if you are
interested in attending. Registration forms will be available at the March quild meeting.
Please return the forms by the April meeting, along with a $75 deposit. The balance must
be paid before June 1.
Prices are $250 for doubles and $350 for singles for three days and two nights. This
includes two nights’ lodging, plus six meals: lunch and dinner on Monday, breakfast,
lunch and dinner on Tuesday, and brunch on Wednesday. Please note if you have a
preference for a roommate.
You are welcome to bring your own snacks and drinks and even meals if you wish (there
are microwaves and fridge space is available). Also note that the cafeteria-style meals are
hearty… and there is a salad bar and at least one vegetarian option at each meal.
Bring family members or quilting friends or come alone and make some new friends.
Start planning now and you'll be good to go!
Thanks – Cat Harris

2015 PROGRAM UPDATE
Special Thanks to our February Mystery Speaker and Sandi for her Wonderful Class!
We hope you enjoyed our mystery speakers, Ron Core and Kim Sweet, from our Big Bear Historical Society and
Museum! What great actors they were and quite an interesting presentation. I know I learned lots more about
our Valley history and one colorful character! If you have groups you work with, be sure to contact them…they
have a series of these presentations! We are so happy to support our local preservation efforts.
And special thanks to, Sandi Cannarella, for our workshop “Borders, Binding, and Piping”. What a great learning
experience, especially to me the small, sometimes “quilter”, and for the great sisterhood and sharing from the
lovely group of women who attended!
PROGRAM: March, 2015
Our evening meeting on March 16th will feature a member’s “Wearable Fashion Show”! Bring things from your
own wonderful creations…pins, bags, vests, jackets, etc….whatever you can share and as many! We all love new
creations and especially things to wear or carry! You can even bring things from other artists that you love or
other arts…this will be fun!
The next day’s workshop on Tuesday, March 17th , will be an opportunity to work individually or as a small group to
make comfort quilts for another one of our purposes…supporting our community! Sue Hart, our lovely and hard
working philanthropy member, will provide kits and assistance…a great opportunity to assist the Guild in giving
back to the community and meet our giving goals! Bring your machine, and an unfinished donation quilt or pick a
kit to work on! Please join us and help us finish our 2015 donations early this year!
There is no registration fee. A donation of $3.00 to the Guild for a baked potato bar is requested if you do not
want to bring your own lunch. Pre-registration is helpful so we can have enough supplies and food. Please contact
me as soon as possible via text or email or by calling!
CALENDAR OF EVENTS 2015
Also, at this meeting I will bring a calendar of workshops for the year along with the lovely samples that have
arrived for upcoming workshops! So many lovely things have arrived and I cannot wait to share them with you!
Sign up sheets will be available so be sure to bring your calendars and money/checkbooks to sign up early! Get
your supply lists and begin planning your next creative adventure! We have a wonderful program with lots of
great learning experiences this year…don’t miss out!!
My hubbie’s new to-do…figuring out a board and easel to display them at each meeting! Have to wait until ski
season is over and his six month of honey-do’s or as his friends call it, Hard Labor, begins
SOME FREEBIES YOU MIGHT LIKE TO CHECK OUT:
A freebie…Heart Glow Mug Rug pattern! Just go to www.craftsy.com to find this and other
free patterns, online classes, kits, and supplies for quilting and the other arts!

2015 OPPORTUNITY QUILT
We’re off to a great start marketing our
beautiful 2015 Opportunity Quilt. Wendy and
Belinda have both had it on display in their
shops, Lorraine has taken it to several guild’s
meetings and Fran and Bonnie spent the first
day of the Spring Fling Quilt Shop run at Cherry
Berry Quilts with great success at all these
locations. We will also be at the Glendale Quilt
Show on Friday, March 13. We are lining up
more dates and will have announcements and
sign-ups at future meetings.

Handy Hints: For applique patches, place
templates with the longest dimension along the
bias (diagonal grain) of the fabric. You’ll find
it’s easier to turn under a bias grain than a
straight one.
When appliqueing, save time and frustration by
threading all of the colors of thread you will
need and keep them in a pincushion
Try using pinking scissors when cutting out
pieces for hand appliqué. The evenly notched
edges are a help in turning gentle curves .

SUNSHINE & SHADOWS
First, the Sunshine! A few lucky Busy Bears members’ quilts have been accepted for entry in the
Glendale Quilt Show (Mar 13-14). Kudos to Bonnie Marshall Creel, The Cut-ups (for their group
quilt) and Sandi Cannarella, who has two quilts in the show. Sandy has also been selected as a featured blogger on the Superior Threads web site, in addition to having her “Walk through My Garden”
quilt accepted at Paducah! Also Lys Axelson’s ”Siberian Tiger” was also accepted for the Glendale
Show and the Paducah !
Way to quilt girls! We’re proud of you all!
Ina Niday was the lucky winner of the Orange Grove Quilt Guild opportunity quilt. She said she
bought $10 worth of tickets to support the guild (she is a former member DTF) but never expected
to win as she “has never won anything” Well, surprise! Congrats, Ina! Bear Mountain Quilts
opened with great success. New fabrics and supplies are arriving daily, with a nice selection of both
“modern” and traditional fabrics. Stop by and check it out if you haven’t already. Patchworks has
started a Quilting Bee Friendship Group that meets the 1st, 3rd and 4th Wednesday every month.
Starts at 10:30 and lasts all day. No fees, no obligations, just fun and friendship. Coffee, tea and
snacks are provided.
Don’t forget the 2015 Spring Fling quilt run, Mar 5-7, at the following seven quilt shops: Busy Bee
and Cherry Berry (Calimesa): Monica’s Quilt & Bead and Quilter’s Faire (Palm Desert); Painted Lady
(Redlands); and Stars & Scraps (new location in Corona). Lots of great prizes. Hope to see some of
you there!
As always, there are the Shadows. Jeannie M’s son Bill is recovering from a cerebral
aneurysm at Kaiser Fontana. He has progressed to the point where he is out of the ICU and will
begin rehab in a few days. Per Jeannie: “Many thanks to you all for keeping Billy close to your
hearts and in your prayers and thoughts” .
Janet Walz is recovering nicely from a fall. She had a badly bruised knee, injured fingers and a
scraped hand and arm.
Kay Higdon is in the hospital with excess fluid in her lungs. Prayers and positive thought are welcomed.
Also, keep Janet Schultz in mind; her auto-immune issues have flared up again.
And a celebration of Karen LoPresti’s life was held at Bear Country Quilts on Feb 27,
where the sewing room was dedicated in her honor. Rest in peace, Karen, you will be sorely
missed.
Contact: Cat Harris, 714-390-2601 or [email protected]

FRIENDSHIP GROUPS
CUT-UPS—We are back to meeting in
members homes. Our experiment with
meeting at the Sewcial didn’t work our quite
as well as expected. But the Sewcial is a
great way to get things done and visit with
our many members. March meeting is at
Karen Cumberland’s on March 2, she will
serve lunch. I am looking forward to seeing
everyone.
Hope you all can make it
Fran Martin
STITCHY FINGERS–We had a pretty big
group at Jacqué and Kay’s in February. So
good to see Kay looking much better. We
talked about everything from beaded bugs to
bad drivers . Many of us even got quite a bit
of sewing done!
Our next get-to-gether
will be at Sue Bost’s on March 6th.

SCCQG Quarterly Meeting
The program for the April 25th SCCQG
Quarterly Meeting will be one of my favorites —Meet The Teachers ! It will be held at
the Carson Community Center, 801 E Carson
St, Carson CA at 10 am, Saturday morning.
For those who are new, “Meet The
Teachers” is when many teachers give a short
talk on their expertise for Guild lectures and
workshops, After or before the meeting you
are able to talk to the teacher and see
samples of their work. It is always a fun
meeting and a good time to collect literature
for future workshops. Some Guilds even sign
then up that day.
Email me, Janet Walz, if you are
interested in joining us, email me

I should be back up on the mountain by then.
