Quilt Retreat - Orange County Quilters Guild
Volume XXXV Number 4 Page 1 June 2015 www.orangecountyquiltersguild.com Substitute Newsletter Editor Sandy Milo June Program Our speaker this month is Sherry Werum from Woodland, CA. Her lecture is titled “ Four Score and Seven Years: Quilting 1776-1863”. Join us as Sherry, dressed in historical costume, discusses quilts from revolutionary times through the Civil War. Keeping with the historical theme, Sherry’s workshop will be “Using Silhouettes in Quilts”. She has many ideas for incorporating silhouettes in a quilt. Take a photo in profile of your subject, print it out in 4x6 format, and bring it to the workshop. Sherry will help you turn it into a meaningful quilt. Thayone Quilt Retreat OPEN INVITATION! June is a great month, isn’t it? School, if not the year-round variety, is out or about to be out soon, the colors of nature are bright and cheerful, and most of us look forward to outdoor activities of some sort. For me these days, most of my outdoor activity involves trying to keep up with my granddaughters. There’s never a dull moment. Once in a while, I actually sew outside. Have you tried it? I take a big folding table out into my covered patio, along with my sewing machine and chair, and whatever else I need, and off I go! It’s a great way to soak up a little bit more of the stuff that gives us that Vitamin D we all need, and it’s very relaxing! An added bonus is that if you happen to need to sew on minky or any sort of fake fur, the fuzz doesn’t get all over your house. I really love that part! Add some of your favorite music into the mix, a glass of iced tea or lemonade, and it’s about the best way I know to enjoy one of those wonderful June afternoons. I want to extend the thanks of every member of Orange County Quilters Guild to each and every volunteer who helped make our 2015 Quilt Show a wonderful success! I was so proud to see what we all accomplished together, and though the lion’s share of the thanks goes to Kat and Cindy, everyone else helped too. Please know that we appreciated every single thing you did to help, and when we plan our next show or event, we will need you all again. This is a terrific guild, and that’s only because our members are such wonderful people! Thank you all! Speaking of volunteers, I am happy to announce that Carol Harter has agreed to be our Librarian for this year, and Laura Lynch has agreed to be our Equipment Chairperson. These ladies, along with the many others that we previously announced as our committee chairs for this year, are going to help keep this guild running smoothly. I am so grateful for their willingness to help! I hope to see all of you at our next meeting on June 9th. We’ve got an interesting program coming up! Hugs, Betsy _____________________________________________________________________ Our Mission Statement Orange County Quilters Guild is one of Southern California's oldest quilt guilds. Email address: [email protected] Quilts For Kids It’s hard to believe that summer is already here. If you’re like me, you’re attending graduations, weddings, and baby showers. Speaking of baby showers….we’ve had a request for a dozen baby quilts to benefit My Safe Harbor, an organization that works with low income single moms in Anaheim. I’ll be bringing in a few myself that’ll need binding, etc., but I’m also inviting you to bring a cute baby top, panel, or completed quilt to donate to the cause. I’ll still be bringing the usual hand work and kits for kids’ and teen quilts, so that our foster kids don’t go without. Many thanks to those of you who continue to support the philanthropy effort. I’ve had several of you gals step forward to sew on binding and do more of the quilting in addition to doing the hand sewing. Our quilts are such a gift. On behalf of all of those who receive them, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Happy Quilting, Pam Gayle Philanthropy/Quilts for Kids May Door Prizes Thanks to everyone who donated door prizes this month. Be sure to visit the stores and help support our quilt shops. A very huge and special “Thank You” to everyone who goes to stores and picks up our door prizes. The Whisper Challenge is the same idea with quilts. Participants are divided into groups, in our case, 4 in each group. The first person finds an inspiration piece (poetry, a photo, a beloved possession or whatever) and makes a quilt Inspired by the piece. She has a month to complete the quilt. She puts the quilt in a pillowcase and passes it to the next person in her group. She does not share the inspiration piece. The second person makes a quilt inspired in some way by the first quilt. She does not see the original inspiration piece. She passes her quilt to the third person in the group and returns the first quilt to its maker. The third person sees only the second quilt, and so on. Each person has until the next Guild meeting to complete her quilt. The only rules about the quilt are "quilted, bound, and labeled." The fourth quilt will be due in November. After the fourth quilt is complete all four quilts and the inspiration piece are revealed. No other rules, no prizes, no fees. Just fun! If you want to participate, please call Thayone (714 891-8655) ASAP. 8 Opportunity Baskets At our May meeting we had five opportunity “basket” winners and also one special drawing winner.
