There have been many stories of how disability has not been a hurdle to people from doing what they want, and Maa Ula is proving it once again. Gadafee holds a Ph.D in History and was a professor in a reputed college in the city. ‘I am earning more than what I earned during my tenure as a professor. Missing Madhan case: HC notice to DGP Don’t throw your spoon away, just eat it MALAVIKKA SRIDHARAN Chennai, June 9: While it is relaxing time on a flight for most people, for Narayana Peesapaty it was a ‘eureka’ moment when he was flying 35,000 feet above the ground--- he decided to do his bit for creating sustainable living on earth. From the conventional habit of eating with spoons, he has created edible spoons not just to avoid plastic waste but also to save water. In an interview to News Today, this scientist revealed how the idea travelled from a long way to somewhere. ‘It all started when I was on a savewater spree. Sunday, A letter which was allegedly written by Madhan, stated that he was going to Kasi to attain ‘samadhi’. The reason for this extreme step seemed to be issues that cropped up between him and Paarivendhar, founder of India Jananayaka Katchi (IJK) and the SRM group. Paarivendhar had apparently not spoken to him for nearly six months and not included him for the election campaign. Thangam had filed a complaint at the Chief Minister’s cell and also filed a habeas corpus petition at the Madras High Court. Gone are the days when only one discotheque, HFO (Hell Freezes Over) reigned supreme. This has paved the way for rise of party scene in the city. Unlike other place, Chennai’s pubs have been given the licence to be open all night, only if the right fee is paid for it. Club hoppers nowadays go to resto bars to have drinks then head on to their favourite discotheques and party till the wee hours. This is a sign that Chennaiites are taking the party scene seriously. Flying Elephant, a popular watering hole in city witnesses jam-packed crowd even at 4 am. Most of the crowd is made up of the high end hipsters who are in their 20s and 30s. There also pubs which serve the niche section of the crowd in the city. With the bar deadlines being extended club hopping has become an ideal norm. On a average, a club hopper hits about three venues on a Saturday night spending anything from Rs 5,000 to Rs 30,000 including the entry charges, drinks and dinner. Clubbing scene has become more varied than before, with an array of DJs, music genres and prices. ‘People have become more used to the clubbing scenes but nothing has changed over the years. If you want to bond with real people over a common love for music, favourite food or football match, then head to The Moon and Sixpence at Hablis. Spread across 4,000 square feet, and set in an authentic Irish pubhouse-style, The Moon and Sixpence is a space that celebrates simple good times. Enjoy themed Wednesdays and Fridays featuring rising talents of the music world as well as established bands who give you a taste of international music as well. They also have a special salon that is perfect for conversations, poetry, laughter and all that will ‘build and bond.’ ‘This is my regular weekend spot, my friends and I come here for the food, amazing ambience and most important of all the music. The pub regularly have live acts performing. Popular city based bands often perform high tempo music. The prices are pocket friendly, I would usually go for the roast chicken which is a crowd favourite,’ said Sebestian Victor a regular. The cuisine here is another revelation. The garden burgers are made from naturally fermented sour party till 6 am in HFO many years ago. Crowds used to queue up to get in, as the party got more intense after three in the morning. EDM (Electronic Dance Music) is always the crowd puller, it makes even the conservative type to shake a leg,’ said, DJ Akara, a local favourite. These days people don’t party only on the weekends but also during the week with family and friends. After work people go out with colleagues to grab a pint. The current trending scene is that youngsters head to pubs like Illusions, the vault etc to do pre-party drinking and then head on to places where is the party is just beginning. ‘Q bar is my favourite place to be on a Saturday night, with good deep house music and lovely cocktails it is the best. It is a late party starter, so my night starts with Hablis as pre-party drinks go then my night always ends at Q bar. Every pub has its own set crowd and music. But these places are always ready to cater to the mixed crowds. The prices does burn a hole in your pocket but it is worth the fun.’ said, Kiran Naig a regular club hopper. Sundowners are for people who party away the weekends. Staying up till the early hours of Sunday and sleeping all through the day is the new it factor youngsters are practicing now. The participants will be performing 4,000 asanas in a cycle and some may be repeated. Mahayogam aims to break its own earlier 32-hour record for Limca Book of Records with the extraordinarily long yoga exposition this Saturday-Sunday. ‘It will be entering the bigger league of Guinness Book of Records,’ says a press release from the organisation. When Ramesh Rishi was asked if the participants in the record attempt needed special training, he was quick to answer in the affirmative. He said since they needed extra strength to sustain the effort for 40 hours, they were, indeed, given special training. This was given in the form of an integrated martial art - Zenskar - which increases the stamina level of the participants. Wrestler Sushil Kumar, a two-time Olympic medalist has been in the news for seeking a court direction to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to hold a selection trial to decide who will represent India in 74 kg freestyle category. The court, however, declined to entertain the plea and said it was ‘untenable in law as well as contrary to facts.’ Sushil, who has been hugely successful in the 66kg category is now left in the limbo as the class has been scrapped and his attempts to gain a berth in the 74 kg have proved in vain. Joining the debate, Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra felt spending time away from competitive tournaments went against the star wrestler (Sushil Kumar). The court observed that a trial may ‘jeopardise’ the chances of selected candidate Narsingh Pancham Yadav and the country would be the ‘loser.’ It must be said Sushil’s feats in the international arena are commendable and the court even termed him a ‘legendary wrestler’ in the 66kg weight category but did not provide any relief for him as he continued the battle to win a chance for a spot at Rio. As Bindra pointed out, the Wrestling Federation should be very clear with their policies and they should make it public even before the qualification of athletes for the Games begins. While there may not be any more drama in this regard, a lot is likely to be witnessed in the selection of the tennis teams for Rio. One can’t forget what happened in the lead-up to the London Games in 2012. With Rohan Bopanna sealing a spot by securing a top-10 ranking, he is free to choose his partner for sporting extravaganza. Veteran Leander Paes, who recently won the mixed doubles title at the French Open is highest ranked Indian, but Bopanna has made known his dislike to partnering Paes. Though the selectors are likely to take a call on the team composition, it must be said predence would be given to Bopanna’s views. Meanwhile, Sania Mirza, who is ranked number one in the women’s doubles too gets to chose her teammate for the Games and a possible mixed doubles partner. While Paes is chasing a dream of figuring in a seventh straight Olympics, his hopes now rest with Bopanna and the selectors. Also, with the Indians not enjoying high rankings, only one mixed doubles team can feature in Rio, thus dimming Paes’s hopes. The coming days would be interesting as the selectors will need to walk the tightrope in picking the teams, keeping the players’ and country’s interests in mind. Ramesh Srivats @ rameshsrivats Snapchat seen surging in US SAN FRANCISCO: Ephemeral messaging app Snapchat by year’s end will have more US users than either Twitter or Pinterest, a market tracker said. The number of people using Snapchat in the United States will leap more than 27 percent this year to 58.6 million, meaning that nearly one in five people in the country will be using the service, according to an eMarketer forecast. Twitter was expected to have 56.8 million US users this year, and online bulletin board Pinterest to have 54.6 million users. By the year 2020, the ranks of US Snapchat users was expected to swell to 85.5 million, according to the report. However, eMarketer forecast that Facebook Messenger smartphone communication application would remain in the lead in this segment with its US user base growing from 105.2 million this year to 139.2 million in the year 2020. Snapchat estimates it has more than 100 million users globally of the service for sending videos, images and text messages which vanish after being viewed. Some reports say it generates 10 billion video views per day. Snapchat’s allure includes letting users ‘cut through the clutter by injecting fun back into social sharing,’ according to eMarketer analyst Cathy Boyle. Snapchat has also tapped into an interest, particularly among young Internet users, in communicating intimately with one or a few people instead of broadcasting messages across networks, the analyst said. The messaging service has been working with media partners and advertisers to reach its youthful audience. Snapchat this week rolled out a redesign making it a more attractive stage for publishers or brands to attract online audiences. A recent Bloomberg news report maintained that the number of people using Snapchat daily around the world already outnumber those using Twitter, giving the figures 150 million users versus 140 million. Those figures have not been confirmed by either company. Snapchat disclosed last month that it raised more than $1.8 billion in new funding. India’s strong economy, and growth rate of 7.6 per cent per annum, is creating new opportunities for our mutual prosperity, the Prime Minister said. Transformative American technologies in India and growing investment by Indian companies in the United States both have a positive impact on the lives of our citizens. I am informed that the working of the US Congress is harmonious,’ he said much to everybody’s laughter. ‘I am also told that you are wellknown for your bipartisanship,’ he said. ‘Well, you are not alone. Time and again, I have also witnessed a similar spirit in the Indian Parliament, especially in our Upper House.’ Underscoring that both India and the US share the vision of peace and prosperity of the world, the Prime Minister said globally, terror- manity must come together to fight against terrorism as one and speak against this menace in one voice. I commend the members of the US Congress for sending a clear message to those who preach and practice terrorism for political gains, Modi said, adding Refusing to reward them is the first step towards holding them accountable for their actions. He was clearly referring to the blocking of sale of 8 F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan by the US Congress recently. Emphasising that terrorism must be delegitimised, he said, ‘The need of the hour is for us to deepen our security cooperation.’ He said the cooperation should be based on a policy that isolates those who harbour, support and sponsor terrorists; that does not distinguish between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ terrorists; and that delinks religion from terrorism.’ L ICK PIC People watch after a Kurdish rebel suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle outside a police headquarters in Midyat, near Turkeys border with Syria. Enterprise CHENNAI Consulting firm top official goes verbal on venture S BEN RAJA Chennai, June 9: CrackVerbal, a consulting firm, has been making waves in the field of education for the last few years. In a chat with News Today, its CEO Arun Jagannathan speaks about the venture and his plans. How did you get the interest to start this company? I always felt that my real calling in life was teaching. In the early 2000s, I started teaching part-time at training institutes for CAT, and later moved on to the GMAT and GRE space. I was also a popular contributor on various online forums such as Pagalguy.com and Beatthegmat.com. However, I was frustrated at teaching preparatory courses made for Americans to an Indian audience. Finally in 2006, I started CrackVerbal to teach Indians in a unique way that made sense to them. I ended up designing the CrackVerbal curriculum from the scratch to include every feature I saw as missing in traditional courses. How did you go about starting it? CrackVerbal started at a coffee shop in Bengaluru in 2006, when I decided to meet a few prospective students who had approached me through an online forum. Initially I used to have a few workshops every year and was happy to keep it as a part-time avocation. It was not until 2009 that Shreekala (the other co-founder) and I started looking at this as a full-time business. In 2010, Shreekala, after having spent over a decade in IT, decided to plunge in as the first full-time employee of CrackVerbal. I followed in 2011 by quitting my job as a delivery manager with an IT product company. We started with test-prep ( GMAT and GRE), and within a few years, added admissions consulting for MBA and MS to the services we offer. From day one, our biggest motivation has remained the same: how do we act as a bridge between exceptional faculty who love to mentor and extraordinary achievers who want to be mentored. How do you train students in your firm? We offer GMAT and GRE classes in multiple formats – classroom, online and personal tutoring. Early on, we realised that Indian students struggle to ace standardised tests Arun Jagannathan s u c h a s GMAT and GRE because typical training programs for these tests cater to a native English population. So we created a unique set of techniques for non-native English speakers that leverage our intrinsic strengths. We have a very selective process and rigorous training for instructors. We also bolster our classes with a support system that includes email and phone support throughout the week, an exclusive CrackVerbal forum for our students, and additional webinars and study material. What makes CrackVerbal unique from the rest of your competitors? Our competitors in the test-prep NT Bureau Chennai, June 9: India and the US on Wednesday resolved to deepen cooperation in cyber security space and engage on issues concerning internet governance. The slowdown has put at risk livelihood of over 30 lakh people employed by the sector across India, ASSOCHAM said in a statement. ‘The exports are likely to remain under pressure this year as well, even though there are indications of improvement in business sentiment in the US which takes nearly half of country’s diamond jewellery production’, it said. It also said while import of rough diamonds and semi-precious stones have fallen by over 11 per cent in 2015-16, the net diamond exports and semi-precious stones have declined by about 43 per cent year-onyear to $2.4 billion in 2015-16. Paris, June 9: France kick off their Euro 2016 campaign against Romania on Friday with the host nation desperate for a ray of sunshine after being hit by strikes, floods and scandals in the build-up. Protests against a labour law and torrential rain that has caused the Seine river to rise to levels not seen in decades have created a bleak backdrop to the tournament where France will start as favourites. A state of emergency is also still in force after last November’s Islamist attacks killed 130 people in Paris at several sites including the Stade de France, the venue for Friday’s opening game. As if that were not enough, France’s ICC retains Elite Panel of Umpires Dubai, June 9 (PTI): The International Cricket Council has named an unchanged Emirates Elite Panel of Umpires for the year 2016-17 following an annual review by its selection committee, which also includes celebrated former Indian captain S Venkatraghavan. The decision was made by the ICC Umpires Selection Panel consisting of Chairman and ICC General Manager - Cricket Geoff Allardice, ICC Chief Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle, ex-England player, coach, umpire and now a commentator - David Lloyd, and Srinivas Venkataraghavan, a former international umpire. The Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires for 2016-2017 will be: Aleem Dar, Kumar Dharmasena, Marais Erasmus, Chris Gaffaney, Ian Gould, Richard Illingworth, Richard Kettleborough, Nigel Llong, Bruce Oxenford, Sundaram Ravi, Paul Reiffel and Rod Tucker. Ravi is the lone Indian in the panel as announced by the BCCI on Tuesday. preparations have been hampered by a string of injuries and a scandal involving striker Karim Benzema, who said last week that he was denied a chance to play in the tournament finals because of his Algerian origins. Benzema was suspended indefinitely by the French federation (FFF) last December because of his involvement in an alleged blackmail scandal. The FFF upheld the ban in April, effectively ruling the striker out of the tournament. His accusation of racism was widely denied, with promising forward Kingsley Coman calling it ‘nonsense.’ His comments did, however, deepen a row about alleged racism in a national team once hailed as a model for ethnic integration after they lifted the World Cup on home soil in 1998. Current coach Didier Deschamps captained France to that success, but 18 years later he faces a very different challenge. DEFENSIVE WOES It seems a formality that France will survive a group, arguably the weakest in the competition, that also features Albania and Switzerland. ‘I trust my players,’ said Deschamps. ‘The first game is not decisive but it is important because it sets the tone for the whole tournament.’ Romania have struggled in front of goal, but their resolute defence could make them a difficult side to break down. The hosts, by contrast, have plenty of Coutinho sizzles as Brazil routs Haiti Orlando, June 9: Philippe Coutinho grabbed a hattrick as Brazil ramped up their Copa America campaign with a resounding 7-1 win over a hapless Haiti on Wednesday. Renato Augusto scored a brace and substitutes Lucas Lima and Gabriel also goaled for Brazi, while James Marcelin put in Haiti’s consolation goal. The scoreline -- identical to Brazil’s nightmare 7-1 defeat by Germany in the World Cup semi-final two years ago -- takes Brazil to the top of Group B with four points, ahead of the evening’s second game between Peru and Ecuador. Coutinho got Brazil off to a positive start in the Camping World stadium with a goal after 14 minutes when he skipped past a defender and hammered home from 20 metres out. He doubled Brazil’s lead 15 minutes later thanks to Jonas, who was on hand to poke a loose ball across goal and leave the Liverpool player with the simplest of tap-ins. Renato Augusto made it three in 35 minutes when he rose unmarked to head home a cross from the right. Although the eight-times Copa America champions appeared to take their foot off the pedal in the second half, they still created chances at will against 74th-ranked Haiti. Gabriel scored the fourth just 13 minutes after replacing Jonas at half-time and his Santos team mate Lucas Lima nodded home a Dani Alves cross eight minutes later. All eyes will be on hosts France when they get the ball rolling against Romania in the Stade de France -- 210 days after suicide bombers at the same venue triggered a night of horror across the capital which killed 130 people. Long way to go: Cook on matching ‘Genius’ Tendulkar London, June 9 (PTI): He might have beaten Sachin Tendulkar’s record of being the youngest to 10,000 runs but England captain Alastair Cook says he is well aware that he is nothing like the ‘incredibly talented genius’ from India and has a long way to go before matching up to him. Cook became the 12th player in history to score 10,000 Test runs during England’s nine-wicket win against Sri Lanka at Durham last month but he is nearly 6,000 runs short of Tendulkar’s record aggregate of 15,921 runs from 200 matches. The left-handed opener, 31, broke Tendulkar’s earlier record of being the youngest to score 10,000 Test runs by more than five months. Cook, who has now scored 10,042 runs in 128 Tests, said Tendulkar’s record Test runs are a long way off for him as of now. ‘Six thousand runs is a long way away. It was set by an incredibly talented genius. I’m no genius and Tendulkar is, so that is a long way ahead,’ Cook said at the Lord’s ahead of the third Test against Sri Lanka. ‘I want to play for England for as long as I can and at the moment I’m really enjoying it. I am really motivated and hungry and where that takes me who knows.’ ‘I’ve never lived my life by saying where I want to get to publicly. In private you have a few goals you want to try and achieve, but at the moment a lot of my goals are very immediate with this England team and as a captain that takes me away from personal milestones as a batter.’ The England skipper has 28 Test hundreds to his name at an average of 47, whereas Tendulkar bowed out of Test cricket with a record 51 centuries at an average of nearly 54. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, the first man to score 10,000 Test runs, said last week that Cook had it in him to set a new aggregate record for most Test runs because of his age and the fact that England play more games over the long format than many other nations. STAGE SET FOR ALI’S MEMORIAL SERVICE Louisville, June 9 (AFP): All of the roughly 15,000 tickets for tomorrow’s public memorial service in Louisville honoring boxing legend Muhammad Ali, the city’s most famous son, have been distributed, organisers said. Hundreds of people formed long lines early in the day for a chance at a seat in the KFC Yum! Center, a large sports arena, for Friday’s interfaith ceremony, at which former president Bill Clinton and comedian Billy Crystal will eulogise Ali. Ali, whose remarkable boxing career and civil rights activism made him one of the most indelible figures of the 20th century, died last week at age 74 after a decades-long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Louisville, the largest city in the southern State of Kentucky and home to 600,000 people, will play host Thursday and Friday to a mass public celebration of Ali’s life. ‘This is part of our history and I feel like Muhammad Ali has an awesome legacy,’ said 23- yearold waitress Andeja Tyler, who stood in line waiting for tickets. ‘I just want to be part of it,’ she said. Ten ticket booths were set up to distribute four free tickets per person. In just one hour, all of them had been handed out. ‘Muhammad Ali memorial tix are SOLD OUT. Looking forward to remembering #TheGreatest! Service will also be streamed on our outdoor jumbotron,’ the KFC Yum! Center said on its Twitter account. Some people spent the night in line on camping chairs and wrapped in blankets to make sure they got tick- ets. ‘Muhammad Ali was such an amazing person, not only as an athlete but really a humanitarian,’ said Jessica Moore, the local county’s assistant district attorney. ‘He was the people’s champion and we, being from Louisville, feel like family to him.’ The Louisville ceremonies will have three key moments: an Islamic prayer service open to all on Thursday, a long public funeral procession through the city on Friday and the public memorial service. Organisers have said several heads of state will attend. 8 THURSDAY 9 JUNE 2016 , CHENNAI Licensed to post without prepayment under WPP.
