Dear Members,
Well, there on the cover is the PRIZE LAND ROVER - and it now looks
even smarter, because, as I type this, a veritable army of enthusiasts
is crawling over the vehicle, tidying it up, fitting new canvas panels
to the doors, painting and cleaning - well, there are four of them!!!
It will look very good indeed by the time of the National Rally. And
the improvements will continue through the summer and will include, for
example, replacement of the brake pipes.
Our thanks to everyone who has already returned the counterfoils of the
draw tickets with the money - very efficient - and we about a third of
the way towards our final target of nearly £5,000 (to repay the loan,
to cover expenses and to provide some extra spares).
Well done to
those who have asked for MORE draw tickets ....
keep up the good work.
(For anyone who has lost the address Andrew Cameron has lots more
tickets.-.or you can write to me, Andrew Stevens. Both addresses on
the inside of the front cover). Remember that Draw Ticket money as
cheques should be made out to "Land Rover Series One Club Charity
Account".
Special thanks go to Club members who, although they don't approve of
draws like this, nonetheless have sent donations for the Appeal. It is
most generous of you.
The draw will be made at the TOP FARM event, near Wakefield, September
7th-Gth, and you will be able to see the actual prize vehicle at a
number of shows during the year.
CLUB A.G3.4.
Tfhe AGM takes place once again at The National Rally - please see the
form elsewhere in the Newsletter.
Nominations for posts on the Conmittee and/or Area Representatives

MEETING AT THE BEVERLEY MUSEUM
We understand that there was some confusion as to the role of the
Series One Club at this event last month. This was NOT a Club event,
nor was it restricted to Series Ones - It was arranged by the Beverley
Museum itself, and Alan Rogerson only undertook to act as liason on
their behalf for Series One Club members.
It is unfortunate that the Museum staff seemed to imply that the Club
was at fault through not attending in force, and it is sad that the
Rogersons received a number of angry and unnecessary 'phone calls. Had
they been organising the event, you can be sure it would have been very
different - witness the continuing success of the Top Farm event which
goes from strength to strength from their successful efforts in the
past.
Although the Club was not in any way responsible, we still
apologise to them for the aggravation received.
BRISTOL CLASSIC CAR SHOW
The Show season opened here in rather cramped conditions as the
premises here can't cope with the demand for this popular show although we did have about 102 Series One Land Rovers on display!! No
wonder there was so little room......except that 100 of the Land Rovers
were models from John Parker's vast collection, and the attracted
almost as much attention as their full-size brothers.
The 'real' vehicles on display were my own 81" Rolls Royce B40 engined
1949 vehiclewbich, although not 100% completed, is at last mobile
having passed the MOT 4 days before the show - about 12 months later
than originally planned. Visitors were able to compare the 81" with a
standard 1949 80" hardtop owned and restored by Martin Jones.
Throughout the weekend there was a constant stream of visitors to the
show in general and the stand in particular: and they were able to view
the many Club stands anf the auction. It must be a sign of the times,
but in spite of the large crowds less money seemed to spent this year
than previously. However, a good start was made in selling draw
tickets to the public who were attracted by the thought of winning a
live, running Series One. My thanks to everyone who helped set up the
stand at Bristol, man it over the weekend and to clear up afterwards.
I hope all members are making sterling efforts of do their bit for the
good cause ........ just to remind new members, for the Club's 10th
Anniversary we decided to raise enough to send a new vehicle to a good
cause in Africa. The diesel One Ten was duly purchased with the help
of an interest-free loan (to cover the shortfall in money raised), and
arrived at Kagando Hospital in Uganda last December. This draw is to
settle the accounts - so not only do you stand an excellent chance of
acquiring this excellent 80", but you can support an important good
cause.

PETE'S SECOND BOOK OF LAND ROVER LAUGHS
Pete Wilford - that well-known Land Rover cartoonist - has produced his
second book of cartoons. Almost 60 pages of amusement and laughs especially when so many have that grain of truth for all enthusiasts.
It is the sort of book that you won't want to put down until you've
laughed at each page.. .and then you can still go back again and again
to study the fantastic detail in his drawings.

Available at the bargain price of only £2.95 post paid from:
Pete Wilford of Funny Fings,
56 Blunts Lane,
Wigston Magna,

from the Club Shop.

"KNOW YOUR LAND ROVER" by ROBERT IVINS
Although rather expensive at £8.95 this new book published by LRO Books
Ltd contains a mine of information.
It is divided into chapters
dealing with Chassis, Engine, Electrics, Fuel etc, and the
is supplied in a question and answer format, followed by a information
chapter on
vehicle identification by chassis number.
A large amount of the book obviously covers problems on later Land
Rovers and Range Rovers, but the Series One is referred
to in most
chapters.
Many black and white photographs both of complete vehicles
and components are included.
If you are a regular reader of "Land Rover Owner Magazine" you will
have seen most of the subject matter already
printed in their
"Drivetrain" Problem Page, but it is very handy to have
it all brought
together in this pocket size book. (Have you ever tried
find a
paragraph in a pile of magazines which covers your immediate to problem
that you remember reading about sometime in the last few years??)
We do recommend "Know Your Land Rover" - price £8.95 plus £1.25 p & p

LAND ROVER OWNER MAGAZINE
While we're on the subject, a quick plug for LRO Magazine. This is not
because we feel we ought to support it (which we do anyway), but
because it is such very good value.
From the very beginning nearly four years ago it has gone from strength
to strength, and, in my humble opinion, is the best 4 x 4 Mag. on the
market - but then I'm prejudiced.
If you have never seen a copy, then make a point of finding one at your
newsagent - and then take out a subscription. In
this way you will be
kept up to date on all the latest happenings involving
Land Rover
(Defenders, Discoveries and Range Rovers), as well as technical
advice
and historical articles and much, much more.
And talking of LRO's Fourth Birthday coming up ......
LRO'

ROYAL ROVER: Driven by the Duke of Edinburgh at Badminton in April 1952, with Princess Elizabeth as passenger. This is the vehicle, or
an identical one, shown on the cover of Newsletter 54. Note: wing mounted indicators, extended hinges and entended support by spare wheel to
allow the windscreen to folded flat with the spare in position. Note also socket for bonnet mounted standard and fairing over headlights. The
original photograph shows mare people in the back, and the rear springs are well depressed!

This unusual 1955 10711 camper conversion is based on a standard pickup with truck cab. The
main body is of wood, aluminium and a fibreglass raiseable roof. Apparently used as a "Desert
Expedition vehicle" it has 2 fuel tanks and two electric fuel pumps (regularly run on paraffin!)
a sink, internals lockers and roof lockers, underbody lockers and may have had jerrycans strapped
in front of the radiators (causing overheating?). The exhaust runs across the front bumper.
Does anyone known its history or more about the conversion? Contact Miss Helen Sandford, 65
Ringsbury Close, Purton, Nr Swindon, Wilts SN5 9DE

This is an early 86"LHD export vehicle (47130534), delivered to A/S NORCEM as a factory
fire tender on 17th December 1953 and bought by Club Member Halvor Syvertsen in June
1989. The extras that go with it are Trailer with Ziegler Fire Tender pump and a rear
capstan winch. It has now done a genuine 7132 kilometers! Careful study will show that
the original Dunlop Trakgrip tyres are still fitted.
Come on now - who hasn't dreamt of finding and acquiring a vehicle like this????
37/10
MILITARY PROTOTYPE???
This 1950 80" is in the York Motor Museum
in Western Australia. It has gun racks
inside and apertures through which guns
could be fired. The windows are hinged
and the body sides appear to be re-inforced.
The bumper has been extended with the
facility to fit jerrycans. Note the sidelights. The roolrack type frame is
partially hinged on the rear cross member
so that the whole frame can be brought
backwards. Interestingly the window
frames and the lower rear doors (split
like those in a western saloon!) have
securing bolts on the outside.
There appears to be a toolbox behind
the bumper, with a tube to take the
starting handle. There also seems to be
some sort of hydraulic pump driven
from the transmission.
It has apparently been
suggested that it is a
prototype for the
commandos in Korea!!
Any bright ideas from
all of you reading this?

details of suppliers of items needed in

We will also try to include details of paint specifications (a constant

EMBSAY
RALLY
-
APRZL
28r7
This was a day not to be forgotton with 36 Series Ones on display, or
which four belonged to Ken Wheelwright! - 437 DEL, 438 DEL, HAC 942 and
ENL 70, all 80"
Andrew Bullen came with his two 80" vehicles, one a Fire Tender 1953
and 1951 tilt MYA 172. John Robinson brought his 1955 86" Station
Wagon and ran the Club Shop and handed out lots of membership forms.
Harold Lowe brought his polished bare metal finish 86" station wagon
and ran the Red Rose Land Rover Club stand.
Special thanks to Peter Galillee from Keithley for ringing round
prospective entrants for the rally, as the deadline for the last issue
of the Newsletter was Just missed.... and apologies for those who missed
the event - and what a great day it was, just like summer.
Next year
will be the 10th Anniversary at Embsay Steam Railway Station near
Skipton, so please get in touch with me if you have any ideas about
special features or activities.
The Forward Control register had a Club stand with seven vehicles - two
ex W"D 101" and five normal ones, including a camper. The AGI4 was held
in this vehicle which came dcwn from Scotland.
As usual there were lots of autojwrbles and other stands to browse
over.
The prizes were awarded as follows:
Best 80"
ENL 70, 1949 80" with canvas cab - Ken Wheelwright
Best 86"
JKY 903, 1953 86" with tilt - M Bickerdike (who left
before the presentation - please contact Graham Roe)
Best LWB
XSL 203A, 1956 107" Station Wagon - Martin Coombs
Best LR in everyday use: NVU 490, 1952 80" - Sue Cambridge
Most original LR:
EFN 790, 1949 80" tilt - Geoff Smith
Many thanks to all who attended and helped, especially Alan Rogerson
who helped in the judging - not an easy job at all.
See you all next year.
Graham Roe
SERIES ONES AND INDICATORS
The current NOT Test requires all vehicles to have some means of
indicating change of direction.
Semaphore Trafficators or flashing
lights would comply, but there are some difficulties:
1, Semaphore Trafficators. The genuine original optional equipment but unfortunately expensive and difficult to obtain. Additionally, the
modern motorist in his mass-produced jelly-mould generally totally
ignores them. I find it safer to use hand signals as well - with
hair-raising results when Fangio behind thinks the "turning left" hand
signal means "please overtake me"!
2. Flashing Lights (white at the front, red at rear). Until quite
recently these were current on Fords at least, and they can be fitted
by using twin filament bulbs and fittings at the front, and a system
which causes either the brake or the tail light to flash at the rear. I
must confess I'm a bit hazy about how this works. The problem is that
you can't have the hazard light facility, and soon motorists won't
realise what's happening when they see a single side or tail light
flashing. (I'm getting cynical in my old age.)
3. Flashing orange lights front and rear - which either mean new holes
in the bodywork, or an alternative arrangement of flashers fitted on
brackets. I've seem them done very neatly bolted to the spring hangers
front and rear, or to small holes under the outward end of bumper at
the front and to the grab handle bolts at the rear.
For show vehicles an alternative is to have a control box (containing
flasher unit, switches for left and right with warning lights) which
clips onto the dash or the 80" passenger panic handle. It could be
powered from the dash sockets (provided you've bothered to connect them
up!), and the lights could be clipped to the rear grab handles and to
the top corners of the windscreen ...all easily removeabie when the
vehicle is on display. If both switches (left and right) were used you
have a hazard facility.
(Thanks to Ross Floyd for his ideas.)

On the one hand people have been sending incomplete information - one
wanted his vehicle authenticating by verifying a single photograph,
while another enquiry wanted me to find out the original registration
mark for a vehicle (unspecified) with reference only to its chassis and
engine number (again unspecified)!!
On the other hand, following in the rich tradition of bureaucrats the
world over, I have had extreme difficulty in finding out what is
actually required as sufficient evidence for the granting of an
original registration mark if the old style Log Book does not exist.
To sum up: There seems to be little problem if you have the old style
Log Book AND the other supporting evidence as specified in Newsletter
56.
However, if there is no Old Style Log Book
DVLC seem to require the
following as supporting documentary evidence (the production of which
only MAY lead to the granting of the original number):
1. Proof that the vehicle was built!
Obtainable from:
British Motor Vehicle Heritage Trust,
Archive Dept,
Castle Road,
Studley,
Warwickshire B80 7AJ
(0527) 853111
There is a fee of £15 and you must quote the model and chassis/vehicle
number and approx date of manufacture, and they will provide a
certificate. It's no use quoting the Registration Mark!
2. Proof that the vehicle (under its Registration Mark) has existed in
the past! i.e. MOT Certificates, Tax Discs, Garage Invoices/receipts
etc.
3. Proof that the vehicle and the Registration Mark go together. Things
like a signed letter from a previous owner (on headed paper - ideally
from a company or garage etc) stating that this vehicle, chassis number
xxxxx, Registration Mark yyyyy, was owned by them from x to y.... or any
document from the past on which both chassis number and Registration
Mark are quoted.
You may also find that some Registration Authorities still retain
their records, and that some of those might have records in which both
chassis number and Registration Mark are quoted. See the Book review
elsewhere in this Newsletter "How to trace the History of Your Car"
However, DVLC will not commit themselves as to what evidence will be
regarded as sufficient, so I can only recommend that you provide
everything you can think of and then go away and find some more proof!
Three final points;
Please, please read the requirements on the application forms from DVLC
(e.g. photocopies of documents are not acceptable).
Please. please comply with the Club requirements.
It is no use
thinking we will authenticate your vehicle if you don't provide all we
require. It is just a waste of time for yourself and ourselves.
Please, please, if your vehicle is authenticated and you are asked to
take the documents to your local Vehicle Licensing Office TAKE THEM
ALL. I am fed up with getting the blasted things back from DVLC saying
that insufficient evidence has been provided. Part of the problem, of
course, is that the LVLO's don't know what is happening or what is
required any more than DVLC does!

MEMBE IN NORFOLK/SUFFOLK/CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Derek Webster is Chairman of the Association of Norfolk Car Clubs and
Vice-Chairman of the Breckland LRC and he has sent in long list of
events in the above area.
At present we haven't an active Area
Representative there, and would like to have a greater Club
presence,
as well as providing a better service for members.
He has details of the shows which would welcome vehicles on display,
the principle ones being the Vintage Machinery and Car Rally at Watton
(May Bank Holiday weekend) and the Town and Country at Norwich on 8th
September.
If you would like to help or be involved please get in touch with him

USEFUL HINTS from IAN COX
rI
tfurning-rhstEation Wagon to the road Ian recorded the following
points:
1. Excess side to side movement in the clutch and brake pedals can be
removed by rebushing the pedals and machining the cross-shaft - but
BEWARE!
The cross-shaft is through-hardened and must be ground down a job for a good machine shop. (However, see Stafford
Dovey's advert he has new ones for sale, complete with bushes. Ed.)
2. Set the pre-load on the front swivel pins WITHOUT the housing seals
in place, and with a little engine oil as lubricant, otherwise you set
them too loose.
3.
If
fitting an overdrive - especially a secondhand one - modify
the
actuation linkage to take the type of spring-loaded screw in clevis pin
as used on the clutch linkage, otherwise it will rattle like crazy.
4. On later 2 litre engines check the face of the oil filter head for
flatness where it meets the cylinder block. These are prone to warping
and hence leakage.
5. Overcooling in the winter months can be partially avoided by cutting
two blades off a spare fan and using that during the cold spell.
actually remove the fan altogether and fitted small spacers on theI
bolts. This is OK, but you need a temperature gauge and watch out for
traffic jams.
(Ed. You can also run the engine with the three
fan from the Rover 60 engine - or, of course, run without, but bladed
a
Kenlowe fan or a suitable electric one from a modern scrap car. fit
It
is
possible to buy the Kenlowe thermostat unit to use with such a
conversion. I understand the engine driven fan can use up to 4 HPI)
AIR CLEANER HOSES by Ross Floyd
Te- Series 2 raised air cleaner unit has a thin wall rubber
flexi-ribbed hose which is similar in appearance to the genuine item.
Although this will collapse if fitted alone, if the spring is removed
from the inside of the old pipe and fitted inside the new
it works
perfectly. The carburettor diameter is a little small, butone,
the pipe is
flexible enough to crush down without leaking.
This pipe should be
generally available at around £10.
IRE TENDER PUMP CONSOLE WATE VALVE LABELS
oss loyd has had some sets of metal replica labels made up as they
originals were prone to fading and damage. £12 per set of three (and
not many are available. Please write to him at 2 Brockley End Cottages,
Cleave, Avon. This must be one of the most limited appeal offers ever!

ORIGINAL OIL PAINTINGS OF YOUR LAND ROVER
Bernard Genge is a specialist in oil paintings and portraits from your
orn colour photographs, with a particular interest in classic/vintage
car portraits - he's an enthusiast and member of the Jensen Owners
Club.
As the paintings are done from photographs he offers a full money back
guarantee and only asks for a £25 deposit with the order (which is
refundable) - so there really is no risk.
Painted on canvas he charges, for example, £98 for a framed 12" x 16"
painting of your car, and £137 for a similar one if you want a person
to be included with your car ..... going up to £215 and £290 respectively
for 24" x 48". There is a charge of £25 if you want a detailed rather
than a plain background.

CLASSIC CAR REGISTERS
We occasionally get information from these companies who hold registers
of vehicles suitable for use by the media, TV, Film and Advertising
companies.
Hire fees are paid for the use of a vehicle,
complete
with
comprehensive insurance. Collection and delivery can be arranged.
LOCATIONCARS, 6 Knolls Way, Clifton, Beds, SG17 5QZ - (0462) 811817 charge £10 (inc VAT) for inclusion on their register (regardless of the
number of vehicles you own.
I include these details, not because I necessarily think you are all
desperate to see your pride and joy captured for ever on film or in an
advert.. .but because I was short of an item to fill this last space ....
and didn't want to leave a blank!!!
That's it then...next Newsletter will be going to press in early July then it will be early October, followed by early December.. .and it's
Christmas again. That one will be my 60th Newsletter, and time then to
hand over to another Editor.
Plenty of warning to get things
organised, planned and handed over.

CLUB SHOD NE7W.S

Friends, Romans, Club Shop customers: I hope by the time you read this
the Shop orders and requests for information, spares etc will be up to
date!
Pressure on time by work has led to lots of delay lately.
Apologies extended as appropriate. Please give me a ring if you
feel
'left out' (ring between 9 - 10pm is best).
The period batteries available from John Smith through the Land Rover
Register 1947-51 are IDENTICAL to those supplied by this Club, and they
are ideally suited for use in all petrol Series Ones, particularly the
earliest - ie 1948. They are supplied 'green' (uncharged with the acid
in a separate container to allow indefinite storage).
Period Batteries remain available for collection ONLY (£57), or we can
arrange for delivery to some shows during the year.
Ring me, Jamie

]BOOK REV I EWS
LAND ROVER SERIES ONE 1948-1958
The Brooklands Books series have for many years provided a compilation
of original articles and roadtests from magazines such as 'Motor' and
'Autocar'.
The Series One was covered in 'Land Rover 1948-73' which, unfortunately,
missed out quite a number of important early articles. This has been
redressed by devoting a separate book to each of the Land Rover Series
(plus a fourth on the Ninety/One Ten)
'Land Rover 1948-58' contains 35 articles, 25 of which were originally
published before 1958. The remainder were articles on the Series One
published during the 1980's.
With the difficulty and cost of obtaining original magazines this book
provides an excellent source of technical information and photographs
of a kind unavailable in workshop manuals or 'history' books of the
marque. The later articles give advice on running and restoring these
vehicles today, and place the Series One in its historical perspective.
Published by Brooklands Books. 100 pages, softback 8 x 10 3/4"
It is good value, and obtainable from the Club Shop: Price £7.95 + 50p
post and packing.

$OfTO TRACE EHISTORY OF YOUR CAR'
By Philip Riden, Academy Books. 80 pages, softback, 5" x 8"
The research for this book was undertaken during 1990 by Philip Riden,
a vehicle enthusiast and lecturer in local history and an authority on
record archives.
He has chronicled the system of vehicle registration from 1903 to the
present day. At first this seems a little extraneous, but it very
clearly explains the sequence in later years which has resulted in the
large scale dispersion and destruction of so much information, which
was still largely complete as recently as 1975.
The book gives invaluable guidance as to the places to fund vehicle
registration records not detailed at DVLC in Swansea.
Also suggested
are less obvious sources of information. All local records offices are
listed for the UK and Eire, and for most there is guidance as to the
completeness of these records. Such records can provide hope to those
struggling to have their vehicle registrations reissued, but who lack
documentary evidence.
This is not a book for everyone's shelf, but I know it would have saved
me many times its cost in 'phone calls alone, had it been available in
the past.
