Chennai, June 13:
Next time one were to visit the local police station, an appointment
with the Inspector of Police might
not be a tough task after all, thanks
to the recent ruling by the Commissioner of Police T K Rajendran,
which has asked Inspectors to set
aside an hour each day, to attend
public grievances at their respective police stations.
According to sources, the move
came about after it was alleged
that, Inspectors were not readily
available to meet people, in few
stations.
This issue was raised at a recent
press meet with the city Commissioner, following which an hour
in the evenings for complainants,
was made mandatory.
‘This move is welcomed by the
police department. The Inspectors
will henceforth be present to attend
to the grievances from 5 to 6 pm
each day’, said Inspector Nataraj.
Another stated that they are mostly
out on rounds during evening
hours, which is why people who
come may not get to meet them.
‘Each evening, we check for activities street-by-street. We engage
in countering chain-snatching and
other offences, checking on CCTV
cameras and their recordings. We
have duty at the court as well’,
he said.
‘We are always under public’s
scrutiny, and if we are not to be
seen on rounds for even a day,
people question us as to why we
did not come. Patrolling is important as it sends a strong message
to criminals’, he stated, adding
that the department also needs to
be in close contact with the common man.
‘With the recent order, people
will know that they can meet the
Inspector without fail if they come
at the prescribed time’, he said.
‘We will be happy to sit with them
and and attend to their complaints,
thereby extending the rounds to an
hour later’, he noted.
Meanwhile, another Inspector
rued that some petitioners, after
lodging a complaint with the police, immediately approach higher
officials. ‘This sends out a wrong
message’, he stated.

When Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa
meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi
in New Delhi Tuesday, she would
present a detailed memorandum to
him, highlighting various issues of
the State.
According to sources, the document would seek, among other
things, financial assistance for the
State to implement various welfare
projects, formation of Cauvery
Board, steps to find solution to Sri
Lankan Tamils issue, measures
to retrieve Katchatheevu, speedy
clearance of projects and the release of seven convicts in the Rajiv
Gandhi assassination case.
CM cell official to visit R K Nagar every week
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today said a special officer from the Chief
Minister’s Cell at the Secretariat will visit R K Nagar every Tuesday to receive
petitions from people. ‘The officer will stay at the Tondiarpet Tahsildar office
throughout the day and will get petitions from people. They will be brought
to my notice and appropriate action will be taken,’ she said in a statement.
This will be Jayalalithaa’s first visit
to Delhi after being elected Chief
Minister for the second consecutive term and for a record sixth
time. Her previous visit was in
June 2014, immediately after the

As many as 12 cinema halls including the SSR Pankajam in Saligramam
and Ganapathiram in Adyar have
locked their gates for the last two
weeks. As a result, fans are left in
a lurch.
Apparently a feud between theatreowners and the alleged decision not
to co-operate with dozen theatres in
and around the city by Tamilnadu
Theatres Owners Association meant
that they had to temporarily shelve
screening movies.
Speaking to News Today, owner of
one of the single screens that was
shut recently, said, ‘we have been
voicing against the alleged tactics by
few theatre-owners to get big movies
screened only by them in their area.’
‘They pay huge sum to screen the
film and due to demand, hike the
ticket fare. But they cry foul that they
suffered loss and seek compensation form producers and actors. We
opposed the same’.
Also we gave a written representation to Thiruvallur district Collector
not to allow permission for special
shows on the day of release for big
releases and it added to our trouble,
he said.
‘When several screens in Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur district did not
screen Theri, a few including the
dozen screens that are shut now
went ahead and released the movie.
However officials of the association
including Pannerselvam are punishing us by issuing a no-coperation
order. We are now forced to close
our theatres’.
The lives of hundreds employed in
our theatres are at stake, he added.
He said further, ‘Theri issue was
sorted out by its producer and theatre
owners. And we wonder why we are
punished for it now’.
With Rajinikanth starrer Kabali set
for release soon, we want the issue
to be sorted out amicably. We have
no option but to represent the issue
with the State government’.
Two mishaps in city
MTC bus hits auto driver at Velacheri

Chennai, June 13:
Two road mishaps that left two
men injured, were reported in the
city since yesterday, In the first incident, an MTC bus suffered a break
failure and rammed into three auto
rickshaws and a car in Velacheri last
night. It also damaged a compound
wall nearby.
According to the police, Sathish (36)
from Villupuram was driving an MTC
bus 570 (Thiruporur to Koyambedu),
on the Dhandeeswaram Road, near
the police station, when he steered to
a side to make way for a vehicle from
the opposite side to pass.
However, owing to a break failure, Sathish lost control of the bus,
thereby ramming it into three autos
and car. It also crashed into a TNEB
compound wall. An auto driver Ramanujam from Pallikaranai who
fractured his limbs in the mishap, was
admitted to a hospital.
In a separate incident at Nandambakkam near MIOT Hospital this
morning, a car rammed into a traffic

The CWDT had on 5 February,
2007 awarded 419 tmc ft of water to
Tamilnadu, 270 tmcft to Karnataka
270 tmcft, 30 tmcft to Kerala and
seven tmcft to Puducherry.
Last week, a State government
press release announced Jayalalithaa’s Delhi visit and said:
‘The Chief Minister will be leaving Chennai for New Delhi on
the morning of 14 June and will
call on the Prime Minister and
discuss important issues relating
to Tamilnadu.’
She will be returning to Chennai the
same day, the release said.
A meeting between the two took
place last August when Modi had
visited Tamilnadu.

In a major development in Orlando
shooting incident, Islamic State (IS)
terrorist group has claimed the responsibility for the attack.
In a message published on the
group’s semi-official news agency,
Amaq, it described gunman Omar
Mateen as a ‘soldier of the caliphate’.
In the worst mass shooting in US
history, at least 50 people were killed
and 53 others injured when a ‘lone wolf’
gunman opened fire early on Sunday
in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
Idol smuggling
case: Courier firm

In a new twist to the idol
smuggling case, a courier company based out of
Thiruvananthapuram has
come under the scanner,
for allegedly aiding in smuggling antiques from Mumbai
to Chennai via Thiruvananthapuram.
According to sources, idols
that were reported to be
missing from northern States
such as Mumbai, UP and
Bihar, have been found to
be transported to Chennai,
through the said courier company. Following the reveal,
a team of police from the
city is said to be leaving to
the neighbouring capital for
further investigations.
This comes after two consecutive days of raids at
Venus Colony in Alwarpet,
that led to the seizure of 150
idols and 50 paintings.
The exquisite sculptures

sourced from temples in
south India. Meanwhile, the

and Charitable Endowments) has asked temples

the language appeared to suggest he

A state of emergency has been de-
clared in Florida. The gunman Omar
Mateen, 29, was killed by a SWAT
team after he took hostages at Pulse, a
popular gay night club. He was armed
with an assault rifle, a handgun and an
unspecified ‘device’, said officials.
‘It appears he was organised and
well-prepared,’ Orlando Police Chief
John Mina said. Officials said the
killings were likely to be ideologically motivated, though there was
no information that the gunman was
associated with a particular group.

skills in the 19th national sub-junior and first inter-State challenger
sprint championship at the stateof-the-art SRASSC Water Sports
Centre at the Sri Ramachandra
University campus.
The gleaming waters at the new
facility became the venue for the
rowers to display their skills. For
those training at the SRASSC, it
was an opportunity to translate
the hard work put in by themselves
and the coaches into success and
medals.
According to T S Sivasubramanyam, secretary, SWSC, it was a
very good performance by the
Tamilnadu rowers to win five medals - two silver and three bronze at
the championship. He said it was

fours event in a close contest.
He had words of praise for coach
Nithya, a former international, who
has won medals at various levels.
‘She is doing a very good job as
a coach and knows how to handle
the youngsters and imparts quality
training.’

Ramachandra University campus in Porur.

This man’s heart ticks with the sound
of clocks. For Robert Kennedy, a resident of
Kodambakkam, time pieces and clocks are like
children and he has dedicated his house to them.
He is a realtor by profession but a ‘watch-smith’
by passion. A visit to his house gives one the feel
of visiting a museum of rare collectibles. Clocks that
date back to the year 1700 and those from 1950s are
prized possessions. Some of his treasures include
model of steam engine, weighing machine, coffeemakers, world’s first model of wall clocks, carriage
clocks, pocket watches, lanterns, Belgium chocolate
mould and printers that are more than 100 years old
and in working condition.
With a monthly maintenance of Rs 25,000 and
four hours of dedicated time to clean the ornaments, the mini-museum is maintained by him
with a lot of care. He has collections from
10 different countries like France, Russia,
England and Germany among others.

grandfather. ‘My father used to narrate stories about
how in those days people came to his house to see
the time. I was thrilled whenever the clock was keyed.
There started my love story,’ Kennedy said.
Thirty-three years of collection and more years to
come, his collections would be converted into a
trust museum soon. ‘This is to make sure that my
descendants don’t misuse my treasure and the
valuables can be conserved with reverence,’
he said.
He is keen to get his name etched
in the record books.

farming in a big way.
Resource recovery parks in
Perungalathur and Mudichur
started by the NGO, Hand in
Hand, are good examples.
Following the same philosophy, Radha Rani, a retired
teacher from a government
school has set up an organic
garden surrounding her house.
This reporter caught up with her
to find out about organic farming
and it’s benefits.
Asked how she developed an
interest in the field and started
a garden at her house, she, ‘We
are basically an agricultural
family. My father as well as my
father-in-law have been cultivating crops in our hometown
in Kumbakonam for the past
50 years. We naturally started
utilising the vacant land sur-

plants using organic methods.’
Stating that the family had been
living in Perungalathur for some
20 years, she had right from the
beginning they had been maintaining trees and plants.
About maintaining the garden,
Radha has a word of advice:

ginger, garlic and green chilly on

Drugs in Punjab
U
dta Punjab and the controversy surrounding the infamous cuts
recommended by the censor board may have had a political
motivation but it has served a useful purpose --- bringing into sharp
focus on the serious problem of drug abuse and unbridled liquor
consumption in Punjab.
It is no accident that one of India’s most progressive states is in an
utter mess with major chunk of young men consuming drugs in a big
way. All over the border villages, there are needles and syringes that
lie strewn around in the fields with men, mostly young, in pathetic
state, many of them in no condition to work and tend to the fields.
Mysteriously, the border districts of Punjab where prosperity was
all-pervasive and young men joined the army in droves have been
hit by the drugs thunderbolt. If the country and State’s establishment
are not viewing the menace with due seriousness it is downright
foolishness and myopia.
Considering that almost all the heroin comes to Punjab through the
Pakistan border, pumped in by smugglers allegedly aided by ISI,
there is grave danger in trying to mask the evil and in shielding
the bigwigs in Punjab who provide protection to the smugglers for
monetary gains.
It was this smuggler network that the terrorists who attacked the
Pathankot airbase were believed to have used. According to an
NGO website, the rate of heroin abuse among 15 to 25-year-olds
in the border districts of Punjab is as high as 75%. Since Assembly
elections are due in Punjab next year and the Akali-BJP government
fears that any adverse publicity could ruin whatever chances it has of
coming back to power, it has a stake in underplaying the drugs issue.
The State is indeed going downhill rapidly with little seriousness
to stem the tide. It is not just drugs that are driving the youth in the
state, the yearly consumption of alcohol in Punjab is touching 29
crore bottles making it one of the highest per capita consumers of
alcohol in the world! It is deemed to be a status symbol to serve and
consume liquor in huge quantities and the youth are sucked into this
habit as early as when they are at their most vulnerable age.
We may pin all blame on Pakistan which doubtlessly is playing a
sinister game by abetting the drugs menace, the cold reality is that the
State’s youth can hardly be absolved of blame. They have forsaken
their age-old reputation as bravehearts and martyrs and are going
obsessively after money and superficiality, throwing all norms of
morality to the winds. Culture is an obvious casualty. The time to
act is now or else it would be too late. Punjab must be saved from
the drug mafias.

Mina Justice was sound asleep when she received the first text from her
son, Eddie Justice, who was in the gay nightclub when a gunman opened
fire, leaving 50 dead and more than 50 wounded. This is the conversation
she had over text message with her
30-year-old son:
‘Mommy I love you,’ the first message said. It was 2:06 am.

Now wide awake, Justice dialed 911. She sent a flurry of texts over the
next several minutes.
‘I’m calling them now. U still in there Answer our damn phone Call me.’
The 911 dispatcher wanted her to stay on the line. She wondered what
kind of danger her son was in. He was normally a homebody who liked to
eat and work out. He liked to make everyone laugh. He worked as an accountant and lived in a condo in downtown Orlando.
‘Lives in a sky house, like the Jeffersons,’ she would say. ‘He lives rich.’
She knew he was gay and at a club - and all the complications that might
entail. Fear surged through her as she waited for his next message.
At 2:39 am, he responded: ‘Call them mommy Now.’
He wrote that he was in the bathroom.
‘He’s coming I’m gonna die.’
An Indiana man armed with three assault rifles and chemicals used to
make explosives was arrested in Southern California and told police he
was headed to a West Hollywood gay pride parade, an event that annually
draws hundreds of thousands of people, authorities said.
The yesterday’s arrest in Santa Monica of James Wesley Howell, 20, of
Jeffersonville, came just a few hours after at least 50 people were shot and
killed in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, though police said they had
found no evidence of a connection between the events.
The LA Pride event continued as usual, albeit with increased security. Los
Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced the arrest at the start of the parade

processing sector.
Officials of the Department of Industrial Policy
and Promotion (DIPP) and
Food Processing Ministry
are discussing mutually
agreeable conditions to be
included in the proposal, an
official said.
The development comes
in the wake of Ministry of
Food processing asking to
put a condition of investing
25 per cent of the foreign
inflows for creating agriculture infrastructure in the
proposal.
The original proposal sent
to the Union Cabinet did
not have any condition.

Harsimrat Kaur Badal is
demanding that foreign
players looking to invest in
the sector would have to
mandatorily invest a portion of their investments in
building infrastructure at
the farm gate level for the
benefit of farmers.
The minister is asking
for putting a condition of
investing 25 per cent of the

agriculture infrastructure.
However, another official said that inclusion of
any kind of condition in
the proposal may hamper
investments in the sector.

A share purchase agreement was signed by Tata
Power’s subsidiary, Tata
Power Renewable Energy
Ltd with Welspun Energy
to acquire Welspun Renewables Energy Pvt Ltd.
The deal size was not disclosed and there were no
purchase comments either.
Welspun Energy is itself a
subsidiary of the Mumbaibased Welspun Group, a
multinational corporation
with interests in energy,
steel and textiles.

‘Udta Punjab’ cleared with 13 cuts: Nihalani

he censor board has cleared
the controversial drugthemed Bollywood film Udta Punjab with 13 cuts under the ‘A’ category, its chairman Pahlaj Nihalani
said today.
We have today cleared Udta
Punjab under A (restricted for
adult audience) category after 13
cuts, Nihalani told reporters on the
sidelines of a function here.
Nihalani, who was in the eye of
the storm over suggesting a very
large number of cuts, said nine
members of the Central Board of
Film Certification watched the film
and unanimously cleared it after
the proposed 13 cuts.
The CBFCs job is now over. It is
now up to the producer to go to the
court or tribunal. We will implement
the order,’ Nihalani said.
The Abhishek Chaubey-directed
film is tentatively scheduled for
release on 17 June.
The CBFC’s revising commit-
tee had suggested a number of
changes in the movie, which stars
Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor-Khan and Diljit Dosanjh,
and deals with the problem of drug
addiction among youth in Punjab.
Meanwhile, responding to a
query, Nihalani, who has been
criticised by the film fraternity for
his dictatorial attitude said, those
call me cheap are themselves
‘ghatia’ (lowly)’.
Nihalani clarified that he never
called himself as chamcha (sycophant) of Prime Minister Narendra
Modi.
There is nothing wrong in admiring the Prime Minister. I never said
(I am) a chamcha,’ he said.
The makers of the movie, Phan-
tom Films had approached the
Bombay High Court against an
order of the revising committee
of CBFC that suggested certain
changes in the film.
A string of changes proposed
included removing a signboard
mentioning Punjab and other suggestions.
The HC had on Friday said that
the makers of Udta Punjab should
tone down expletives and vulgar
scenes as these alone cannot
make a film work.
A division bench had concluded
hearing arguments on the petition
and is expected to pass order in
the case tomorrow.
