‘Place to Live’ Nineteen800 Opens in California
Owners and dignitaries celebrate the Grand Opening of the
Nineteen800 mixed use development in Cupertino, CA.
Layton was general contractor on the 650,000 SF project
which included 60,000 SF of retail space and a large plaza,
as well as more than 200 apartments. The project was formerly
known as Rosebowl Mixed-Use.

New Cath Lab Advances Cardiac Care at UMC in Tennessee
Doctors and staff celebrate the new cardiac catheterization lab at University Medical Center in
Lebanon, TN. The new lab gives doctors the ability not just to diagnose but to treat coronary artery
disease. Layton served as CM/GC on the $4 million, 3,500 SF project.
According to UMC Director of Physician Outreach and Marketing Adam Groshans, the facility adds
interventional capabilities, which increases the speed in which patients can receive treatment during
cardiac emergencies.

Builds Ramp for
Disabled Veteran

I was approached by a friend, Tim Foley,
who works in conjunction with the Road
Home to find housing for homeless and
disabled veterans. They found an apartment
for a homeless, disabled vet, but it needed a
wheelchair ramp and he couldn’t find anyone
who could do the work. They were in danger of
losing the apartment and asked if Layton could
help. I asked Superintendent Brad Woodford,
and he agreed and met with Tim on site.
Tim had previously lined up donated lumber
for the ramp, but unfortunately that also fell
through. Without being asked, Brad went
around to the various lumber suppliers and
told them about the project. Stringham Lumber
agreed to donate the wood, and Burton
Lumber agreed to donate the hardware and
handrail. In the end, the only investment was
Brad’s time. He went above and beyond to get
this taken care of.
“We couldn’t be more grateful to you for
helping our veterans be comfortable in their
new homes, as we know they fought for the
comfort we enjoy in our own homes.”
Chris Collier, SSVF Housing Coordinator
at The Road Home says the ramp made an
immediate impact. “We would like to extend
our deepest appreciation for your recent help
with the wheelchair ramp you constructed
for our veteran. It brings us great joy to
inform you that he is doing well as he adjusts
into permanent housing, and part of that
adjustment we owe to you.”

New Performing Arts Theater on the Rise in SLC
Construction is on schedule for the new George S. And Dolores
Doré Eccles Theater in downtown Salt Lake City. Layton is lead
contractor on the $115 million project (formerly known as the
Utah Performing Arts Center). The building will be home to a
2,500-seat theater geared towards Broadway style shows.

Drones bring new perspective to job sites
When a subcontractor
brought an Unmanned Aerial
Vehicle (UAV), also known
as a “drone,” to a job site,
Layton Superintendent Bob
Hendrickson immediately saw
the possibilities.
“After watching him fly the
quadcopter, we sat down and
talked about its capabilities.
We always pay someone to
do photos, and for the same
price we can own our own
equipment to use on multiple
jobs,” Bob said. In addition
to the cost savings, “for me
the biggest benefit is to gain
an overall bird’s-eye view of
a project and to be able to
watch the progress. It’s also a
great timeline tool.”
Another benefit is being able
to track installation of equipment that is difficult or impossible to see from ground
level. “It is a great tool to
watch safety on a roof without
climbing up there yourself to
make sure everyone is tied
off and fall protection is in
place,” Bob said. “I have a
great video of roofers using
their ‘Yo-Yo’ to place standing
seam roofing.”

Mayor Kelvyn Cullimore of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, takes the controls as demolition begins in order to
make way for a new municipal complex.
Cottonwood Heights Makes Space for New City Hall
The city of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, bought – and then demolished – eight homes to make way
for a new city hall. Layton will begin the main construction in spring on the new 38,000 SF building which will house city administrators and the police department.
Cottonwood Heights Mayor Kelvyn Cullimore and former owners of the demolished homes were
among the citizens who operated the backhoe to bring the structures down.
The new municipal complex is being built on what Mayor Cullimore calls “a public plaza.” The city
hall will be next to a middle school, the Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center (where Layton has
also done work) and the major city park.
