G’day everyone. The last few months have been relatively quiet but there have been a few runs and activities each month for the Club. In May, there was the VJMC’s Classic Bike Show at Oliver’s Motorcycles which was well attended by club members and there was a great variety of bikes on display, both in the show itself and the show visitors. The Ray Owen Concourse was also on at the Canungra Showgrounds and was, by all accounts, well attended and a good show. In June, the long weekend ride was unfortunately cancelled due to lack of interest but the day ride to Rick’s Garage at Palmwoods on the Sunshine Coast went ahead and was an excellent ride to a good venue. The Pine Rivers Swap Meet was also well attended by club members and I, for one, made a few “important” purchases. July saw us riding out to the Rosevale Retreat Hotel which was a great ride through some very pretty country only to find the hotels food prices too expensive so we “retreated” to another hotel up the road a bit! The Laverda Concourse went ahead as planned and was an excellent day, and last, but not least, the winter trivia night was transferred to Ron and Joan’s house at Eagleby. In this newsletter is a story about a CB750/4 K1 that was sold by its owner in the early 1980s and subsequently rebuilding it following repurchasing the bike in the late 1980s. The story also provides an interesting précis about the K models. There is some helpful technical information from Roger Horrell to help you maintain your pride and joy. Once again, Mal Johnston and Ian O’Keefe have been busy putting together a ride and events calendar for the next few months and there’s plenty of opportunity for you to get your old CB750/4s out and go for a ride with something scheduled for many weekends. As I announced in the last newsletter, I will not be continuing on as the editor after the August AGM. While I am happy to continue on as the treasurer for now, I have done the editor’s job for some time and I have other things I want to do with my life. So, again, there are some options for the club to think about such as, do you want a regular newsletter? If so, somebody else will need to take over the editor’s job and everything that goes with it. Alternatively, can we get by with emails and the club’s website – ie a more electronic version? I suggest there needs to be some discussion on this matter at the club meeting after the AGM. Also, as you will have read in the last newsletter, our esteemed President, Des Atkins, has decided to call it a day and is stepping down from the job. I would personally like to thank Des for his help with the club’s management over the last few years and it is now time for somebody else to step up to the plate and help out your club. Remember, without a president, we do not have a club! No. 3 – July 14 Lastly, don’t forget your membership fees were due at the end of June – more details are provided below in the “Membership Update” section. I hope you enjoy reading this issue of the InFourmer. Ben Thurecht (Editor) PRESIDENT’S Hello to all members. TURN Hello to all members Well, another newsletter is upon us once again and before we all know it Xmas will soon be here. Time goes by so quick when you’re busy. I would at this time like to thank Ben, John and Mal for all their help during my time as President. There are some really good people in this club and I say to all, “Thank You”. I hope my new ventures in the future turn out as well. The Rosevale Retreat Hotel ride went well. It was a bit cool early in the morning but warmed up nicely during the day, but unfortunately I had to leave the ride after breakfast at Boonah to go and see my friend Ned Kelly and his family. The Laverda Concours was a great turn out for the Laverda Club with lots of great show bikes and lots of people, and the parking area was full of bikes. Well this will be my last ‘Presidents Turn’, so to all I say goodbye……… Cheers Des Atkins [President] TREASURER’S REPORT Over the last few months the club has had little financial The club is travelling reasonably well financially and has sufficient funds to meet any commitments over the next few months and beyond, particularly with input from the upcoming Living in the 70s Bike Show and some regular raffles. Income from the sale of spark plugs and oil filters, while not actually making any profit, has reimbursed the club for the purchase price of those items and has provided club members with reasonably priced spare parts. We have also sold a couple of club t-shirts and a cap and had a couple of raffles at club meetings. Outgoings included the purchase of oil filters and some raffle prizes from Aldi for our club events. At the time of writing, the Club’s available funds were $892.20 cash in hand and $1608.35 in the Credit Union Australia account (not including any interest earned during that period). The total assets of the Club are $2,500.55 (cash at hand and in the bank). The club still has a few poloneck T-shirts for sale (see details below). Alex also has a good stock of spark plugs and we recently purchased more oil filters which are now for sale. Ben Thurecht (Treasurer) Page 3 of 18 The In-Fourmer – Official Newsletter of the Honda CB750/4 SOHC Club Inc. MEMBERSHIP UPDATE MEMBERSHIP UPDATE: The President welcomes the following new member to the club during the last 3 months: Geoff Rooks. MEMBER PROFILE In this section a member of the club will be interviewed for each newsletter. You can all expect to be interviewed at some stage, nothing personal, just a bit of good fun and to let other members know about the club, its members and their interests. Last month I interviewed Ross Gilbert, another long time club member. For example, did you go on an epic journey somewhere or you would just like to tell us about your Honda 4. Please give this some thought. It doesn’t have to be a long story – just a few paragraphs and a couple of photos, if available.) Unfortunately, we do not have a member’s story for this issue but we have an article from the Classic and Retro Bike Enthusiast magazine about a CB750/4 K1 owned by Kris Hodgson which makes interesting reading. He has also included a short précis about the history of the K model 4s. I hope you enjoy the article and if you are interested in reading more, I suggest you purchase the magazine. The tshirts are black hi-vis material and have the Club’s logo embroidered on the front and screen printed on the back. Stocks of polo neck T-shirts and caps are getting low as we ordered only a limited number of each in a range of sizes and there are only the following sizes left:- Shirts: 2 x Large size only, so it is first in best dressed - literally! The price for the shirts is $35.00 (plus postage) which is very reasonable and only covers our costs of production (payment by cash, cheque, money order, or direct deposit). You can purchase a shirt by contacting Ben Thurecht on 0412691651 or email [email protected]. We are presently arranging the purchase of more polo-neck t-shirts, caps and bucket hats in a range of sizes. A number of members have asked about polo-neck t-shirts with only the logo embroidered on the front of the shirt and no screen print on the back, so we have included some of those in the order. If you are interested in purchasing a club shirt, please contact Ben Thurecht ASAP so that he can ensure enough of each size are ordered. I have bought two ladies polo-neck T-shirts with the Club logo embroidered on the front but with no logo on the back from a local embroidery shop. They do a neat job and the shirts are the same as the one’s previously done (hi-vis material). I can have additional shirts made for $35.00 (at time of printing). However, I was told that if the club ordered more, then the price would reduce. Please contact Ben Thurecht if you are interested in one of these T-shirts. There was an excellent turn-out at the VJMC Classic Bike Show and by the time we got there the parking area was almost full. There were around 30 bikes entered in the show Page 6 of 18 The In-Fourmer – Official Newsletter of the Honda CB750/4 SOHC Club Inc. but many more to look at in the car park and some very nice machines from all manufacturers. I didn’t count how many CB750/4 club members were there but there were quite a few and everyone I talked to had a good time. Most members present entered their bikes into the bike show and it was great to be able to walk around looking at the bikes or just sit around and have a chin wag for a change! Oliver’s is a new bike shop in the Moorooka mad mile and they made everyone welcome with free tea and coffee on hand, and the VJMC Club members were selling the usual sausage sandwiches and cold drinks. Eric and Merilyne Leah, who are also members of the CB750/4 Club should be congratulated on organizing and running a great show. Sunday 25th; Day ride to Ray Owen Classic Bike Show and swap meet at Canungra Showgrounds. No report was available for this event however, I understand that a number of members attended and by all accounts, it was a great show. JUNE 2014:Sunday 15th; Day ride to Rick’s Garage/Diner in Palmwoods on the Sunshine Coast (John McNair & Ben Thurecht) This was an excellent ride to a good venue and the weather was good to us and quite warm. Eight bikes congregated at the Caltex garage at Carseldine on Brisbane’s northside for the ride up to Palmwoods on the Sunshine Coast hinterland. We headed off around 9:15am after securing Merilyne Leah’s leather jacket with insulation tape due to a broken zipper – you can fix anything with insulation tape! The Bruce Hwy is always busy and boring so it was a unanimous decision to take the back roads. The ride was a combined one with the VJMC and the Honda 750/4 clubs and Ben led us on a great ride on one of our favourite roads up through the back of Narangbah and Roxburg. Although it is sealed road part of the trip runs through private property so its eyes on the road and dodge the cowpats. Soon we were crossing Zillman’s Crossing on the Upper Caboolture River and heading up to the D’Agular Hwy at Wamuran. A right turn and then a left saw us heading north through pineapple farms and out onto the Steve Irwin Way for the run up past Australia Zoo to Landsborough for morning tea at the bakery. They do a nice coffee and cakes but have no idea how to make a cup of tea. Thought it was a cup of milk. This quaint little village is the step off point for the run up to the magnificent little town of Maleny situated high up on the Blackall Ranges overlooking the Sunshine Coast. This is “3 M” country – the three towns of Maleny, Montville and Mapleton in a row. The ride up to Landsborough had been cool however it was quite cold up on the range. Coming into Montville we passed the turn off to Palmwoods but Ben pressed on. Soon he turned into a car park and I thought he had missed the turn-off and was doing a u-turn but no, all of a suddenly he disappeared in between two buildings and No. 3 – July 14 dropped off the edge of the mountain. Well, not literally however he took us down Hunchy (Razorback) Rd, an incredibly steep descent but excellent ride down to Palmwoods and our destination, Ricks Diner. The Diner was and old Garage and has been transformed into a 50s – 60s diner with lots of memorabilia. Oh, and fantastic burgers. We were a little early arriving but it worked out well as we had not booked a table and everything was booked out but as luck would have it, we managed to get a table or two on the grass area before the table “bookees” arrived. Ray and Jenny Burrows drove up in the ute so Jenny could reduce the area’s Bromeliads. They joined us not long after we arrived. Club member Stan Langley came down from Gympie to catch up with us too. Great effort Stan, and Martin and Lyn Quick also met us at the cafe. It was also good to catch up with Sunshine Coast residents Don and Raelene Williams who rode down from Tewantin, Don on his very tidy Honda CB750/4 and Raelene was on her immaculate Honda CB350/4. Everyone seemed to have a good time and there was no complaints about the route taken or the food. In fact many said they enjoyed the route, particularly the ride down the Razerback from Montville. We left the cafe around 1:30pm and most rode with Chris and me back down the highway to the Landsborough turnoff and then down Steve Urwin Way to Caboolture and out onto the Highway for the last blast home. We really enjoyed the day and luckily we had no major breakdowns or accidents! Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th; Pine Rivers Swap Meet, Samford Soccer Grounds, Mount Samson Rd, Samford (Ben Thurecht). This is a new venue for the Pine Rivers Swap and by all accounts it worked out well and is likely to be held there again next year. There was certainly plenty of parking area and room for vendors, and there was plenty of food and drinks for sale. I met a number of CB750/4 Club members at the swap and I even had a bit of luck purchasing some much needed parts. Alex Long had a stall and he reported that he sold everything, so he was happy. Interestingly, a chap arrived with two CB750/4s (a K2 and a F1) in a van with another basket case and many parts in a trailer which he had purchased from a previous club member. I understand he managed to sell everything also. At the subsequent HMCCQ meeting, it was reported that the swap was well attended on the Saturday but numbers were down on the Sunday and for next year they are considering a show and shine in conjunction with the swap, perhaps to run on only one day. We’ll have to wait and see. Page 7 of 18 The In-Fourmer – Official Newsletter of the Honda CB750/4 SOHC Club Inc. JULY 2014:Sunday 13th; Day ride to Rosevale Retreat Hotel (Ben Thurecht). I haven’t been this cold since riding in New Zealand!!!! It must have been one of the coldest mornings this year in down town Ipswich. Anyway, I soon thawed out at the meeting point in the sun. We had a good turn out with 10 bikes ready to go. Not knowing the back roads of Ipswich and beyond as well as others, I was happy to let John McNair lead the charge down to Boonah and beyond. There is some really pretty countryside around this part of the world, and I think John picked the best roads to ride to take advantage of those views. Particularly of note are the back roads through Kalbar and Roadvale before coming into Boonah from the north. Morning tea was at Café 17 in the main street of Boonah and we all sat outside the café taking in the comings and goings in Boonah, one of the prettiest little towns in South East Qld. While we were there, a couple arrived in an Austin Healy sports car which parked right out the front of the café – a lovely little car! Des left us at Boonah to visit his friend Ned who lives in Boonah but the rest of us carried on down the Rathdowney Road and in through Mt Alford, before turning north up past Moogerah Dam to join the Cunningham Highway at Fassifern. A bit of a run up the Highway took us to Warrill View where we turned left to Merryvale and then south to Rosevale. So far, this was a great run along some roads I haven’t been on before and really enjoyed riding. The Rosevale Hotel is one of those old historic pubs that is build right on the road edge and looked like it was about to fall down. Upon arriving at the Rosevale Hotel, everyone climbed off their bikes ready to have lunch at the pub only to discover that the cheapest meal on the menu was around $26 and most a lot dearer than that. So, a quick executive decision saw us climbing back on the bikes and heading up to Rosewood where we found a great old pub with very reasonably priced and excellent meals for around half the price of the other joint – nice ride but I won’t be going back there for a feed again! The staff at Rosewood Hotel looked after us very well and I, for one, couldn’t eat all of my steak sandwich so ended up getting them to put it in a box to take home to eat later, yummy! Lunch over, it was the long ride (for Chris and me anyway) back past Amberley and home via the Logan Motorway and Gateway Arterial. We arrived home around 5:00pm after a great day. No. 3 – July 14 Sunday 20th; 2014 Laverda Concours at Cleveland Showgrounds (Ben Thurecht). The morning was quite cold when we left home around 7:00am to ride our CB750/4 F1 to the Concours. However, the day warmed up nicely and as usual, the Concours was a huge success for the Laverda Club. While the food was OK, it is only just acceptable and each year everyone complains about the food on offer. However, unless we want to cater for ourselves, we will have to put up with it. The Concours was, as always, well worth a look with many examples of beautifully prepared bikes on display but equally as good was the huge number of bikes in the parking area, with every marque represented, and some very nice examples to ogle. Many thanks go to Alex for setting up the Club’s gazebos and a table, etc. Des arrived early also to help him set up so it was all done by the time Chris and I got there. Alex set out our display the same as last year with the two gazebos separated by a space in between. We also had the storage area at the back of one of the gazebos which worked out well for Club members to put their gear in. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the display boards and cutaway engine this year as Ross couldn’t attend. However, we had eight CB750/4s on display and as usual, they generated quite a bit of interest and discussion. Des was also kept busy giving away badges and patches to the kids that wandered past – on ya uncle Des! Saturday 26th; 2014 Winter Trivia Night at Gumdale Progress Hall New Cleveland Rd Gumdale. Due to the small number of participants that registered their interest with John McNair prior to the event (12 in all), it was decided to cancel the hall booking and have the event at Ron and Joan’s house at Eagleby. As Joan was doing the catering for the venue, this worked out better for her but it was a disappointing turn-out for this, usually popular event. EVENTS CALENDAR Note:- The monthly Club meetings are held at the Belmont Tavern in Belmont Shopping Centre, Belmont Road, Belmont. Meetings are scheduled for the first Sunday each month and start at 10:00am when the Tavern opens up for business. No. 3 – July 14 In all their 40 years of marriage Hillary never looked. However on the afternoon of their 40th anniversary curiosity got the best of her and she lifted the lid and peeked inside. In the box were 3 empty beer cans and $1874.25 in cash. She closed the box and put it back under the bed. Now that she knew what was in the box, she was doubly curious as to why. That evening they were out for a special dinner. After dinner Hillary could no longer contain her curiosity and she confessed, saying, "I am so sorry. For all these years I kept my promise and never looked into the box under our bed. However today the temptation was too much and I gave in. But now I need to know why do you keep the cans in the box?" Bill thought for a while and said, "I guess after all these years you deserve to know the truth. Whenever I was unfaithful to you I put an empty beer can in the box under the bed to remind myself not to do it again." Hillary was shocked, but said, "I am very disappointed and saddened but I guess after all those years away from home on the road, temptation does happen and I guess that 3 times is not that bad considering the years." They hugged and made their peace. A little while later Hillary asked Bill, "Why do you have all that money in the box?" Bill answered, "Whenever the box filled with empties, I cashed them in!
