NOW in its fourth decade, The Offshore
Europe Oil & Gas Conference & Exhibition
(OE 2009) takes place in Aberdeen, Scotland

PROCUREMENT
The procurement part of
the business has always been
important to Charles Kendall,
providing services to both public
and private companies, and the
new integrated structure adds
additional value to the service.

PACKING
The integration of Bestworld
Packing, CK’s wholly-owned
leading export packing
company, has added a new
dimension to the company’s
portfolio. “The most successful
projects have been combined
with our packing and shipping
services. Having a packing
service under the umbrella
of the company has provided
one-stop solutions that many
customers have utilised and
found to be a big advantage,”
explains Frew. The packing
service now also includes both
dangerous goods and military/
section 5 cargoes.
Project cargo has been a
boom area for CK in the last 18
months as Frew explains: “We
have focussed hard on project
work, we have been pushing
project shipments and we are
well above budget. It has been
a big contributor to our success
this year. The majority of our
project work is ocean freight
and this can be combined with
our packing division to add
extra value. We have, however,
also coordinated a number of
airfreight project shipments,
including charters to the Middle
East.”
PROJECTS NETWORK
CK’s gains in project
cargo have been aided by its
membership of the WCA Family
Projects Network. According
to Frew, “becoming a member
of the Projects Network has
helped boost our presence in
this segment. We offer doorto-door services across the
world and membership has
helped us identify like-minded
quality companies to provide the
perfect solution for customers”.
“The Project Network has
been a major help over the last
12-18 months. We have also
been handling enquiries for
other members, especially for
US business. This has been
self-generating in terms of new
business for us. There is the
right mix of agents in the Project
Network with only one or two
in each country. This ensures

the quality of partners is high
and we can build a rapport
with these guys. We have
always found that long-term
relationships work better as a
business model. The vetting
system for joining the Project
Network is comprehensive and
helps maintain standards.”
SECTOR SPECIALISTS
Other sectors of the business
have also benefitted from
the vertical integration. “In
the last couple of years we
have concentrated on specific
industry sectors. We have
added value to our military and
exhibition specialist services
that have reaped dividends. We
now have a very strong military
business through our Redcliffe
brand. This is demonstrated by
the fact that we temporarily lost
a contract on price to a major
multinational. However they
could not match our level of
service and we soon won the
contract back,” said Sunderland.

Oil and gas experts
THE Middle East has been a particularly rich source of new
contracts for the company, especially in the oil and gas industry.
“Our Middle East business has been a real area of growth in the last
year,” says Frew, “we have employed extra personnel to help cope
with the increased demand. There is a huge amount of project work
in the region and our reputation has allowed us to rapidly increase
our revenues.”
Sunderland believes that CK’s core values have helped in securing
a range of new contracts. “We have won significant business in the
oil and gas sector in the Middle East by offering the right level of
service. Multinationals just cannot match what we can offer. For
example we keep customers and all interested parties in the supply
chain informed constantly by text. This constant flow of information,
even to parties in the field, is an essential part of our offering. These
companies then tell colleagues about the level of service they receive
and we gain further business through word-of-mouth.”

Crude Oil - Soft cargo insurance

market awaits major catastrophe for correction
THE last couple of years have seen some
dramatic fluctuations in the price of crude
oil with somewhat surprising consequences
in the cargo insurance markets; premiums
were held unusually low despite the need for
record capacity to cover the ever-increasing
value of oil.
Currently, an average VLCC shipment
of around USD100m per vessel is typical but
at its peak in 2008, it was not uncommon to
see values of up to USD300m. This seemed
to be the maximum level at which insurance
markets could support ultra-cheap premium
rates, and anything greater than this was
likely to require more expensive capacity
and thus drive up overall prices.
Relative to many other sectors, the
oil business tends to be well-managed, so
losses are comparatively rare and generally
minor. There has been no major casualty
for some time, and the incidence of “paper
losses” – differences between the measured
quantities at loading and discharge, where
there is no actual physical loss of cargo – has
reduced significantly in recent years with the
widespread use of electronic metering. So
premium rates have consistently fallen and
remained low.
As oil values, and consequently insured
turnovers, fell during late 2008 and early
2009 so too did insurers’ USD premium
income, and we have recently seen some
increases in rates in response to that.
However, the market still remains soft
providing crude oil cargo owners with access
to historically low insurance rates.
However, the potential for catastrophic
loss is always present and it is considered
likely that the next major crude oil disaster
will result in a dramatic correction in the
insurance markets.
Crude Oil Cargo Cover
The cover available to crude oil cargo
owners varies from Total Loss Only to
ICC “C” (coverage against named major
perils such as sinking, stranding, burning,
General Average, etc), ICC “A” (All Risks)
and Guaranteed Outturn (GOT - coverage
against a lower than expected discharge
quantity, from any cause).
GOT policies will contain a deductible
of between 0.50% and 1.00% of value
for “normal” loss reflecting the differing
characteristics of each type of crude oil and
their typical loss of volume or weight during
transit. The policy will pay claims for any
shortage in weight or volume beyond that
amount.

Qatar expand LNG
production with new plants
RAS Laffan Liquified Natural Gas,
or RasGas is in the final stages of
beginning operation. It will be the
second LNG unit in Qatar to begin
operation in 2009, with the first opening
in April of 2009. The new facility is
expected to produce 7.8 million tons
of LNG per year, making it the world’s
largest producer of LNG.
The construction of the two
plants with two more in development
will double the capacity of Qatar which
is already the world’s largest exporter
of LNG, or gas chilled to liquid form
for export. Qatar is looking to cushion
themselves from the lower energy
prices plaguing the region crippled by
the global financial crisis by increasing
exports. The Gulf Arab peninsula
nation is the world’s richest country per
capita income and hopes to continue
to maintain this by investing heavily in
the development of up to four new LNG
plants this year. Qatar is expected to
boost its production to 62 million TPY

RasGas is a joint venture
between the state controlled Qatar
petroleum and Exxon-Mobil. The
completion of this plant puts ExxonMobile as the largest US oil company.
David Rosenthal, Vice President
of Exxon-Mobile, said that “gas
flowing into the unit and the first LNG
production is imminent.” Exxon is a
partner in all four of the LNG projects
due to start in Qatar this year making
them the largest foreign investor in the
country.

The hardest hit is the
European industry which
in the past has been
accustomed to a steady
average of five percent
growth per annum; while
currently they are faced
with a 22 percent drop in
freight traffic. Following
suite is the Asia-Pacific
airlines which have
recorded close to a 16
percent fall in cargo traffic.
Such declines
have plagued the
airlines industries for 13
consecutive months, with
many airlines expecting
this trend to continue
for several more years
before traffic will return to
levels seen in early 2008.
However with the current
increases in airplanes,
notably freighters to the
various airlines, this is
a perfect opportunity for
forwarders worldwide to
take advantage and lock in
better rates.
With such a huge
order as that made by
Ethiopian, it is clear
there are players that
are expecting the turn
around to come soon and
are taking the necessary
steps to be as competitive
as possible when that
growth comes. The
African continent has
been experiencing overall
a very steady growth,
becoming stabilized and
investors are moving in,
has Ethiopian by making
this bold move taken a
lead on its neighbours as
the regional centre to meet
the demand that will surely
come.

in performing first stage of quench duct transportation
ex Turkey to Qatar Aluminium Plant Ltd by road. The
shipment comprises of 16 units with dimensions of (L) 1200m (W) 570 m H 420m
and weight of 7500 kgs.
Each trailer holds two units per the specification of the special transport
capacity,overall vehicle lenght extended to 3400 m.
MVA Transformer
TULSIDAS Khimji Pvt. Ltd. (TKPL), a heavy lift specialist
successfully shipped one 315 MVA transformer weighing
maximum 234 tons plus accessories right from transporting
from the factory to Mumbai port by multi-axle trailer and onward journey from Mumbai
to Netherlands. The said transformer is exported for testing and will be brought back to
Mumbai, where TKPL will be doing customs broking and delivering back to the shipper’s
factory, thereby providing total logistics solutions.
