The Importance of Maintenance
Nature vs. Nurture
Dr. Frances Jang, MD, FRCPC
THANK YOU FOR VOTING SKINWORKS

age, regular maintenance
with Botox, fillers, lasers and
science-based skincare is
important for achieving longterm benefits for ultimate
skin health and vigor.
These clinical observations are highlighted
in a study published in the Archives of Facial
Plastic Surgery (2006), which evaluated the
benefits of regular Botox treatments on etched
facial lines in identical twin sisters. In
summary, only one of the twins received
regular Botox treatments in the forehead,
eyebrow region, and crow’s feet
(approximately 2-3 times each year over 13
years). The other twin received Botox only
twice during that same period of time.
As you can see from the photos below, this
study confirms the long-term benefits of
maintenance Botox treatments. Forehead,
glabellar lines and crow’s feet were less
evident in the regularly treated twin, but were
clearly visible in the minimally treated twin.
Note that the untreated areas in the lower
face of both twins show comparable aging,
allowing us to conclude that it is the Botox
alone that makes the regularly treated twin
look significantly younger.
A survey published in the

showed that on average, there is
an 8-year gap in how women think they look
on the outside compared to how they feel on

the inside. Botox patients report looking an
average of 5-7 years younger and feeling more
confident after treatment.
Furthermore, my experience is that
virtually every patient wants to convey a
refreshed, healthy and importantly, natural
appearance no matter their age, occupation,
or lifestyle. This is impossible to achieve with a
single injection of Botox or by filling one
particular line in the face with a dermal filler.
