Community Benefits Report - Southern Ohio Medical Center
The SOMC Community Benefits Report 2013 When we were ready to live healthier, SOMC was there. When we needed a community partner, SOMC was there. SOMC hosted its eighth annual heart awareness program, Relax with Heart, Feb. 19 at the Friends Center. The free Relax with Heart event offered the public opportunities to learn how to relax through low-impact exercise, massage therapy, and spa treatments and also included screenings for total cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, body mass index (optional), and a heart risk analysis. By using a poll on their Facebook fan page, SOMC let the community decide how to distribute more than $10,000 in donations to local non-profits in 2013. The final votes saw $4,000 to the Steven A. Hunter Hope Fund; $4,000 to Sierra’s Haven; $1,000 to Scioto County 4-H; $1,000 to the Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross; and $1,000 to the Stepping Stones House! “ SOMC’s $4,000 donation In 2013, SOMC provided the community with more than 4,000 hours of free health screenings. At these screenings, SOMC covered blood pressure, biometrics, cardiac risk and provided flu shots. In total, 4,307 people were reached. SOMC also sponsored the first ever Scioto County Gym Challenge, and offered a series of free fitness events called “Fitness in the Park.” These events were held on three separate dates, and in three separate areas, to ensure that a healthier lifestyle was convenient and accessible. In addition to various screenings and fitness opportunities, SOMC provided free health symposiums and in-services on topics ranging from men’s health to holiday depression. provided over 1,300 weekends! That was over 5200 weekend meals for local hungry children... We are 1st annual c s c i oto o u nt y proud to count SOMC as a partner in the battle against childhood hunger and poor nutrition in our community.” GYM CHALLENGE Mark Hunter, The Steven A. Hunter Hope Fund SOMC equips local ambulances with 12-Lead EKGs. Southern Ohio Medical Center provided more than $100,000 to provide local ambulance providers with new technology and increase the survival rate of local heart attack patients. When an individual suffers a heart attack, local ambulances are now able to get key information to the Emergency Room at SOMC long before the patient even arrives by transmitting 12-Lead EKGs. The information sent to SOMC is analyzed while the patient is still in the ambulance, which means that the Emergency Room and Cardiac Catheterization Lab can begin preparing to treat a heart attack patient long before they arrive at the hospital. SOMC raised money for 12-Lead EKGs with fundraisers including the 2012 Ohio River Cruise and the Old Hollywood Casino Night fundraiser. The EKGs help patients receive the best treatment with early detection. $15,000 to River Days $7,000 to Cirque D’Art $15,000 to SOPAA $4,000 to Scioto County Fair $6,000 to Portsmouth Area Arts Council When we needed to fund the arts, SOMC was there. SOMC is a proud supporter of the arts and entertainment in Scioto County. That is why SOMC gave: • $15,000 to River Days • $15,000 to SOPAA • $7,000 to Cirque D’Art • $4,000 to bring the circus to the Scioto County Fair • And more than $6,000 to the Portsmouth Area Arts Council When I needed funds for college, SOMC was there. Southern Ohio Medical Center takes pride in being a part of the community. For its thousands of employees and patients, southern Ohio is more than a place on a map – it’s home. SOMC donates helmets to Eastern Local Schools. Building a football program from the ground up is no easy task, but Eastern Local Schools was able to do just that – with the help of a generous helmet donation from SOMC. As a new member of the Eastern community, SOMC was proud to help the school get its new program off the ground. In all, 89 helmets, obtained from St. Brigid of Kildare Schools in Dublin, were distributed to Eastern’s Pee Wee and Jr. High football teams, and also to programs at East, Notre Dame, Minford and Northwest. That’s why, in fiscal year 2013 alone, SOMC provided nearly $350,000 in community donations, and put $31,894,152 in charity care and care for patients unable to pay. $350,000 in Community Donations Not only do the donations make it possible for local kids to emulate their idols from collegiate and professional football, it also lifts a tremendous financial burden off of the schools as a new Pee Wee helmet can cost $130 each. In total, SOMC donated more than $18,000 to local youth sports programs! SOMC has supported programs for all schools in its coverage area, provided more than a thousand free sports physicals across 13 school districts and hosted an All Sports Combine that gave high school athletes official times and measurements that could be sent to college recruiters. $31,894,152 charity care and care for patients unable to pay 1805 27th Street Portsmouth, OH 45662 (740) 356-5000 www.somc.org
