HILLARY CLINTON 201 5 B L AC K TI E DI N N ER 11 MISSION Black Tie Dinner, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that raises funds for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) supportive organizations serving North Texas through a premier event of empowerment, education and entertainment in partnership with the community. ABOU Since 1982, Black Tie Dinner has been the largest fund raising dinner for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in the nation. Each year, Black Tie Dinner selects up to 20 North Texas beneficiaries as well as the national Human Rights Campaign Foundation to receive the dinner proceeds. Black Tie Dinner is committed to provide funding for many local organizations that serve the North Texas gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. Last year’s 33rd Black Tie Dinner distributed over $1 million dollars to beneficiaries and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the Dinner’s national beneficiary. The amount raised comes from corporate and individual sponsorships, sale of live and silent auction items, raffle tickets and ticket sales. This million plus distribution brings the total amount distributed by Black Tie Dinner, Inc. to nearly $20 million dollars since its first year in 1982. Seen On Social Wishing you a Happy Valentines Day, and an especially memorable one to all you newlyweds! #loveislove Follow us #BTDallas2015 Black Tie Dinner awards scholarship funds through the John Thomas Scholarship Fund to tireless and deserving volunteers in the community. The fund provides volunteers who would not otherwise be able to attend the experience of North Texas’ premier LGBT event, an evening of education, empowerment and entertainment. The scholarship fund honors the legacy of John Thomas who was an activist in the streets as well as business suites. Thomas was the first openly gay person to address the Republican National Committee and was a founding Board member of the National Gay and Lesbian Health Association. He also served on the board of the Human Rights Campaign. Thomas gave significant amounts of his time to local efforts as the first Executive Director of the Dallas AIDS Resource Center (now the Resource Center Dallas) and as an original member of the Turtle Creek Chorale. Active in 20 organizations, Thomas was also founder of many, such as the Dallas Legal Hospice. 201 5 B L AC K TI E DI N N ER 13 SCHOLARSHIPS JO H N T H O M A S S C H O L A R S H I P F U N D Marriage equality was something we dreamed of, yet never dreamed it would happen in our lifetime. As Mayor of the City of Dallas, it is an honor for me to welcome you to the 34th Black Tie Dinner, “IGNITE.” Tonight, we will celebrate what has been a landmark year for LGBT rights, as we saw the Supreme Court rule in favor of marriage equality. That’s why it is such an honor to have Jim Obergefell among the special guests tonight. He joins Chad Griffin, the president of the Human Rights Campaign, and Houston Mayor Annise Parker, among those being honored tonight. As always, proceeds from this evening’s event will benefit the LGBT community and organizations in North Texas. For over three decades, the Black Tie Dinner has dedicated itself to being a voice and an avid supporter of the LGBT community—raising over $20 million for local LGBT organizations, as well as the National Human Rights Campaign Foundation. The Black Tie Dinner has provided top notch events for our city. It has consistently met and exceeded fundraising goals, providing contributions to organizations that are the foundation of our community. Our city is stronger today because of its rich cultural diversity and the Black Tie Dinner is a testament to that diversity. Tonight, we celebrate this great event and the progress we’ve made in our country this past year. But I ask that we all bear in mind that while we have overcome difficult obstacles, cultural tolerance is still something that we all must continue to practice and teach future generations. Again, thank you for being here this evening and for your support of this organization that has impacted thousands. Best wishes for a successful and memorable evening. Best regards, Michael S. Thanks to the decades of hard work of many of the very people in this room, our country has grown more equal, our world has grown more just, and LGBT people from coast to coast can finally marry the person they love. But despite all the progress we’ve made, we still face some of our biggest challenges yet. We’ve seen an onslaught of anti-LGBT legislation in states across the nation and growing threats to LGBT people abroad. Next year’s Presidential election will be critical to ensuring that we preserve the incredible gains we’ve made and achieving the full federal equality our community deserves. But that means we can’t afford to let up. We must continue the fight for the equal rights and fundamental dignity that all LGBT people deserve -- no matter who they or or where they live. This struggle is why the Human Rights Campaign opened its doors thirty-five years ago. At that time, we weren’t thinking about marriage or full equality at the federal level -- we were fighting to survive. And because of you and so many others, we haven’t just survived, we’ve thrived, and we’ve changed the world in the process. GREETINGS FROM THE HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN FOUNDATION PRESIDENT It’s time to continue that work and stand together as we face the struggles ahead. For more than 30 years, The Dallas/Fort Worth Black Tie Dinner coalition has been our friend and our partner as we’ve worked to advance LGBT equality. Because of your dedication, we are fighting for non-discrimination protections at the federal level that will guarantee LGBT people are secure at school, at work and in the communities they call home. Because of your leadership, we’re exposing the truth about opponents to equality and the havoc they wreak -- here at home and around the world. And because of your support, we will surmount every obstacle in our path. As we continue to move equality forward, our work will only grow more difficult. But as we have done before, working together our community will lead the way forward. And we will win. THEN COMES MARRIAGE. THEN COMES…? WHAT’S NEXT? That seems to be the question of the hour these days. Now that every Texan, regardless of sexual orientation, can legally marry – what is there left to fight for? A lot - actually. DID YOU KNOW IN TEXAS…. • It is still legal to fire someone based solely on sexual orientation or gender identity/expression? • Over 9,000 same sex couples are raising legally adopted children, yet are unable to obtain a birth certificate listing both parents? • There is no law prohibiting discrimination in public schools based on sexual orientation or gender identity/expression? So- what’s next? Gaining the freedom to marry was a huge step in the right direction, and a transformative win with major gains for same sex couples. However, there is still much to be done to ensure each and every Texan can live safely, authentically, and free from discrimination regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. At Equality Texas, we’re not just fighting for good laws, we’re fighting for the right to live a good life. We must remain united, our passion ignited as we fight today for a brighter tomorrow. Join us today. EQUALITY TEXAS FOUNDATION The Equality Texas Foundation educates and encourages the public about policies and their effect on Texans of all sexual orientations and gender identities/expressions. EMCE COMEDIAN Raised by what she describes as “a wild pack of Jews,” otherwise known as her mother and siblings, Dana Goldberg is a force of nature onstage. She sets the standard for smart comedy, and her timing and tongue-in-cheek edginess is why she continues to collect loyal fans all over the world. Goldberg started her comedy career in 2003 in front of 650 people in a sold-out theater in Albuquerque, N.M. Goldberg soon began competing in festivals and competitions across the country. She was one of five finalists to perform in the “Wendy’s Good Taste Comedy Challenge” produced by HBO and TBS in Las Vegas. In 2006, Goldberg put on a producer’s hat and started the Annual Southwest Funnyfest in Albuquerque. Each year Goldberg hosts the night of comedy to help benefit New Mexico AIDS Services. She brings the best national female headlining comics to the Land of Enchantment for a night of nonstop, no-holds-barred comedy. Since its inception, the Funnyfest has helped to raise more than $30,000 to fight AIDS. Goldberg has shared the national stage with President Barack Obama, Shonda Rhimes, Jane Lynch, the cast of GLEE, Lady Gaga, Kathy Griffin, Portia de Rossi, Judy Gold, David Brenner and Kathy Najimy just to name a few. As the youngest child in a single-parent household run by a Jewish mother in which two of three kids are gay, Goldberg claims she helps keep most of the comedy venues and half of the psychotherapists in the country in business. 4 8 201 5 B L AC K TI E DI N N ER ALL PEOPLE ARE EQUAL. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA ENTERTAINMEN MUSICAL PERFORMANCE This openly gay country star has always been all about the ties that bind. You feel it when he’s singing deeply moving No. 1 hits like “What Mattered Most” and “Living in a Moment.” You get it just as much when he’s goofing around with the audience between songs. Even in a genre that prides itself on relatability, he might be the king of connecting. Now, with the release of Lies I Told Myself, his first country album in seven years, he’s bonding with fans in a new way. Lies I Told Myself stays true to the styles that made Herndon one of the top new artists of the mid and late 1990’s. “I’m staying true to who I am and what I’m about as a singer,” says Herndon, “but also reinventing a little bit with sounds in the studio being current with what’s relevant on the radio today.” Herndon came out publicly as gay in an interview with People magazine in 2014. “I realized I had an incredible story that could possibly help someone’s son or daughter or grandchild’s life not be as difficult as mine has been,” he said. “Maybe they wouldn’t have to go through as much pain and suffering. It’s time to tell my truth.” 5 6 201 5 B L AC K TI E DI N N ER DEDICATED TO MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN NORTH TEXAS COMMUNITIES Walgreens Champions Everyone’s Right to be Happy & Healthy A proud sponsor of the 34th annual Black Tie Dinner. ©2015 Walgreen Co. Born Jessica Anne Newham in Sydney, she began playing cello, piano, and guitar as a child, and moved to America with her parents when she was a teenager to attend the Interlochen Center for the Arts performing arts school. She then went to the Berklee College of Music for more training as a cellist, but really wanted to focus on being a singer/songwriter (she began performing her own songs at age 16). While at Berklee, she met producer Peter Thomas, and the pair began writing and recording material together. Drawing inspiration from the songwriting skills of Joni Mitchell and Carole King and the epic synth pop of M83 and MGMT, they came up with a sound that was equally nostalgic and contemporary on songs like “Somebody Loves You,” which Who wrote shortly after Houston’s death. The song became the first single from Who’s self-released debut EP, The Movement, which arrived in April 2013. A year later, she returned with the Slow Dancing EP, a slightly more polished effort that found Who expanding on her brassy style with R&B-inspired production and more introspective songwriting. In October 2014, Who released her first full-length Take Me When You Go, which featured production by Thomas as well as Starsmith, Claude Kelly and Martin Johnson. Who won Best New Female Artist at Logo’s 2014 NewNowNext Awards. Hodges. Obergefell and his late husband John Arthur, who suffered from ALS, famously had to charter a medical plane to Maryland to marry on the tarmac after being unable to access a marriage license in their home state of Ohio due to the state’s ban on marriage equality. After returning from Maryland, the couple learned that Jim would not be listed on John’s death certificate because Ohio did not recognize their marriage. Jim sought the state’s recognition of his marriage to John. SPEAKER PLAINTIFF, OBERGEFELL V. HODGES Decided on June 26, 2015, the case required all states to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and to recognize same-sex marriages validly performed in other jurisdictions. The 5-4 vote legalized same-sex marriage throughout the United States. Not seeing himself as a traditional activist, after the ruling an emotional Obergefell spoke of his love for his husband and received calls of congratulations from President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. As plaintiff in this historic case, Jim Obergefell will forever be known for standing up to protect the marriage equality of all Americans. Obergefell is one many people in our community who ignite passion, ignite community and ignite equality. 201 5 B L AC K TI E DI N N ER 77 A.L. Nella & Company, LLP, CPAs • A.T.
