Questions to Ask your Customer








Is the check or money order from an item you sold on the Internet?
Is the amount of the check or money order MORE than the item’s
selling price?
Did you receive the check or money order via an overnight delivery
service?
Is the check or money order connected to communicating with
someone by email?
Is the check or money order drawn on a business or individual account
that is different from the person buying the item or product?
Have you been informed that you are the winner of a lottery from
another country THAT YOU DIDN”T PLAY?
Have you been instructed to either “wire”, “send”, or “ship” money as
soon as possible to a large US city or an oversees city?
Have you been asked to PAY money to receive a deposit from another
country?

Be aware and pay special attention to high dollar ($500 & above) Travelers
Cheques and Gift Cheques.

Do not accept $500 Gift Cheques. American Express only produces Gift Cheques in $25,
$50, and $100 denominations.
Pay special attention to $500 and $1000 Travelers Cheques. Always perform the
Smudge test prior to accepting these large dollar Travelers Cheques.
On authentic Cheque products, the
left panel denomination will smudge
when wet, the right panel will not.

WHAT TO TELL YOUR
MEMBERS
• If you become a victim:
– Contact the proper authorities immediately and file a report
– Contact your financial institution(s) immediately and either
close the compromised accounts or place a password on all
accounts for added security
– Contact the three major credit bureaus and request a fraud
alert placed on your credit report
– File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission
– Replace your driver’s license and other government-issued
identification and place an alert on your name

