Australia? How many months of the I April 2, 2012 Cody Simpson on His Next YouTube Cover & Recording With Bieber r F i/ A teenage pop star with boyish good looks and feathery hair? No, we’re not talking about Justin Bieber, but there are a few similarities between Biebs and 15-year-old Australian singer-songwriter Cody Simpson, including how they were both discovered (on YouTube!). Like Justin, Cody got his start posting videos of himself on the video-sharing website playing cover songs by artists such as Jason Mraz, Justin Timberlake, and the Jacksons. After being discovered online by record producer Shawn Campbell, Cody was flown out to L.A. to begin recording music, and he’s not leaving anytime soon. Since moving out west in 2010, Cody’s kept busy with EPs and tours, including a co headline tour with Greyson Chance and shows alongside iCarly’ s Miranda Cosgrove. This year, his singing went to the big screen: His remake of”I Want Candy” by The Strangeloves is the main theme song for the Easter-themed animated film Hop, now available on DVD! We caught up with Cody fresh off his “Welcome to Paradise” tour, in the midst of working on his upcoming album, Paradise, due out this summer. Check out the Q&A below and click through to watch a video of Cody recording “I Want Candy” in the studio! ELLEgirI (EG): What made you decide to create pop music? Cody Simpson (CS): I grew up listening to country music.. .a lot of singer-songerwriter kinds of things. but I always had this love for the Chris Browns and the Justin Timberlakes that I really didn’t tell too many people about. When this opportunity arose to come to the states and start recording, it was just like, “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity given to someone who’s been dreaming of this for his whole life.” You only live once, so why not? . . EG: What do you like to wear onstage when you perform? CS: I usually wear suits on stage or button ups and dress shoes. EG: You’ve made YouTube videos covering songs by Justin Timberlake, Jason Mraz, and the Jacksons. Who are some of your favorite artists? CS: Justin Timberlake. He’s probably my main inspiration when it comes to my career and everything I do from my style to my music. He’s just someone that I look up to a lot, he’s been doing it for a long time and he’s a very experienced musician. I’m a big fan of Jack Johnson, I think he’s good. EG: Do you still keep up with your fans on YouTube? CS: Yeah. I’ve actually got this cover going up.. .1 did some tribute to Israel Ka’ano’i Kamakawiwo’ole from Hawaii, he passed away recently but he was a huge Hawaiian artist, he played the ukulele and did this famous cover of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” so that should be going up soon.. .1 did a cover on my ukulele. I like to make sure that every once in a while I put up the cover that I made, aside from all the professional music videos and recording. EG: “I Want Candy” is an appropriate theme song for Hop. How did you want to make your version different than the original? CS: When they originally approached me about it, I went online and looked at every version ever created of the song and I was like, “How can I update this and make it something a little more 2011, something for a younger audience rather than the original versions of the song?”, and Bruno Mars produced it and Ijust kind of got in the studio and I went for it, like, “Okay, we’ll see how this goes.” I did my best to make it another great version. EG: One of your first hit singles “iYiYi” (with Flo Rida) is about missing a girl when she’s not around. Have you been through that? CS: Yeah, definitely. All the time. I think every time you’re into a girl and you’re not with her. obviously in my situation I’m traveling the States and I’m not around all the time, so it’s hard to be in relationships, but there are girls every once in a while that come along that I’m really into and I miss a lot when I’m away. I think everyone in some situation has experienced [that], whether it’s families or relationships or whatever. I’m in L.A., I have a couple of friends back home that I definitely miss, but I’m not in a relationship or anything. .nothing special in that way. . . . EG: What are the rest of the songs on your new album about? CS: The last couple year’s of hard work have all been leading up to this; it’s going to be called Paradise and I think it’s definitely a chance to show the world what I’m doing. I’m working on it this month, so we’re still in the process of creating the music. EG: A couple of months ago you tweeted that you were in the studio with Justin Bieber, are you two collaborating on a song? CS: We’ve got a couple ideas coming down.. we just wanted to get in and see what happened. We just got on the guitar and we were like, “Let’s just see if anything comes out of it.” We have some great ideas coming out right now, whether it’s my first fulllength this year or his, whatever we collaborate on, we’ve just got great ideas coming down and I think there’s definitely a lot of potential there on some of the tracks. EG: People have said that you copied Justin’s hairdo, what are your thoughts on that? CS: I have no idea how my hairdo looks anything like his. Looking at my hairdo right now and looking at his right now, it looks different. I find it funny how ridiculous people are sometimes.. .1 wear a blue shirt and he wears a blue shirt and they think that it’s deliberate. or Girls Who Rock! CODY: I am working very hard right now in studio at Atlan tic Records in L.A to finish my first full length album. There will be a few surprises and a few sounds that you haven’t heard from me before including my single “So Listen.” I continue to have a strong creative involvement in my music and have been working with some great writers and producers to create a sound that I hope is truly my own. We have a couple of potential singles on the album that I think my fans, old and new, will love. My voice and style are evolving constantly and the songs on this album are an expression of that. I want to keep bringing new elements to excite and inspire my fans. GLITTER: What inspires your lyrics? CODY: Girls of course! I grab a quick bowl of cereal, or two, and head straight down to one of my favourite surf breaks. A few of my best mates are therê , we have the place almost to ourselves, and we kill it together for a couple of hours. We head to the local bakery for an aussie meat pie or a hamburg er or both! CODY: Look for every opportunity to perform your music live or on the web. You have to live on Youtube and Twit ter. It costs nothing and allows access to a worldwide audience. If you are talented and stay true to yourself, the world will feel it and you can do it long term because you love it. Australian singing star Cody Simpson is now making waves In the U.S.! C ody Simpson moved from Australia to Los Angeles. The 14-year-old has been busy ever since, promoting his summer hit “On My Mind” and preparing his debut album, due this fall. So he hasn’t totally adjusted to life in the U.S. That includes the weather: The seasons are opposite what they are in Australia! (It’s spring there now.) “It does get very confusing sometimes,” Cody told MATH. “I don’t know how much to wear.” And even if he knows the temperature, it can still be confusing! That’s because in the U.S. we measure temperature in Fahrenheit degrees. But in Australia, and most of the rest of the world, they use Celsius. “All I know is that 0 degrees Celsius is 32 Fahrenheit here,” Cody said. “So if it’s in the thirties, 1 know it’s going to be cold. Other than that, I have no clue!” That’s OK, Cody—most of us have no clue about converting between Fahrenheit and Celsius. But we’ll show you how. You’ll have it down cold in no time! —by Elizabeth Vulaj WHAT TO DO Read “Temperature Tips” on page 5. Use the information to answer the questions, If allowed, use a calculator.
