Are you an OEF/OIF veteran?
Are you anxious or depressed?
Your local community mental
health center can help.
Many veterans have a difficult time
adjusting to life back home after
they’ve been deployed.
Getting help
There are 27 community mental
health centers (CMHCs) in Kansas
with offices in almost every county.
If VA services aren’t easy to access in
your area, or if you’d just prefer
to seek services somewhere else,
contact your local CMHC.
Resources
Your local CMHC: see the back of
this brochure for contact information
Association of Community Mental
Health Centers of Kansas: acmhck.org
or (785) 234-4773
You can come home
Veterans may experience anxiety or
persistent feelings of emptiness. Seeing
a therapist can help you to understand
what you are experiencing and help you
on the road to recovery.

Symptoms of PTSD
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
is not uncommon among returning
veterans. When the symptoms below
last more than a few weeks and become
an ongoing problem, they might be
PTSD. The symptoms of PTSD can be
divided into three types:
National Institute of Mental Health:
www.nimh.nih.gov
Re-experiencing symptoms
• Flashbacks (reliving the trauma
repeatedly)
• Bad dreams
• Frightening thoughts
National Alliance on Mental Illness
(NAMI): www.nami.org
Avoidance symptoms
• Avoiding places/events/objects that
•
•
•
•
are reminders of the experience
Feeling emotionally numb
Feeling strong guilt, depression or
worry
Losing interest in activities that were
enjoyable in the past
Having trouble remembering the
dangerous event
Hyperarousal symptoms
• Being easily startled
• Feeling tense or “on edge”
• Having difficulty sleeping and/or
having angry outbursts

Symptoms of depression
Depression interferes with your daily life,
causing pain to you and those who care
about you.
People with depressive illnesses may
not experience the same symptoms.
The severity, frequency and duration
of symptoms vary depending on the
National Institute of Mental Health Outreach Partnership Program
individual and his or her particular
illness.

feelings
• Feelings of hopelessness or
pessimism
• Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or
helplessness

once pleasurable, including sex

remembering details and making
decisions
