As we move out of the month of Tishrei - the month of
Rosh Hashanah, Tzom Gedalia, Yom Kippur, Sukkot,
Hoshana Rabba, Shmini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah - we
enter the month of Cheshvan - a month with no holidays!!
Cheshvan is often referred to as Marcheshvan - 'bitter
Cheshvan', because we have no holidays to sweeten our
days.
At TNT we enjoyed an incredibly successful Tishrei holiday season. My sincere thanks to the many volunteers who
worked behind the scenes to make Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur run smoothly. Thank you to all the families
who came and participated in our Simchat Torah Celebration and Consecration - congratulations to our religious
school students who are embarking on a new year of learning. I'd like to give my particular thanks to Cantor Steve your energy, passion, and talent made our prayers soar.
And also to Beth Hoffman who does so much to run the
temple office and to help me do my job.
Without holidays to celebrate, we have filled Cheshvan/
November with many wonderful events, educational opportunities, and programs. I am particularly excited about
our Adult Education four-part series (four Thur sdays
beginning Oct. 30) on the topic of "Judaism and Gender."
We will also be restarting our Thursday (noon) Torah
study class, and the Sunday morning Cream Cheese Club Torah study following 9 AM minyan.

Hello Congregants,
This month’s President’s message is being scribed by a
guest columnist.
Eric told me to thank all of you that contributed to the
High Holy Day appeal. If you still have your appeal card,
please consider sending in your contribution.
First let me say that the month of October was a busy
month. We started the month with Kol Nidre and Yom
Kippur, sprinkle in a Sukkot Dinner, Simchat Torah Ice
Cream Oneg and a Friday Night 2nd grade class service.
We concluded the month with the Men’s Club Keeper of
The Flame dinner for Mel Babner and Sisterhood Paid Up
Supper. It was great to see many of you at these different
occasions.
The month of November is packed with other programs
that you can take advantage of. The Sisterhood rummage
sale, the winter coat drive, Men’s Club Paid Up Supper,
Sisterhood Game Night and the Men’s Club Texas
Hold’em just to name a few.
As Eric mentioned, the Temple Board had a Brainstorming and Planning meeting and came up with 14 projects.
Several are beginning to take shape. Mark Rudin and
Richard Strauss are coordinating teams on special Shabbats. Elisa Zimmerman and her crew are working on a
Sleigh/Hay ride in coordination with a Hanukkah party.
Allen Talewsky is looking into setting up a Jewish Tour of
Boston. Please watch your bulletin for more information
on these projects. If you are interested in working on or
finding out more on any of the projects, contact the Temple office.
We have several special Shabbat programs on the calendar
to look forward to. On Friday November 14th we will host
a "Faith Matters" speaker, Pastor Joel Anderle, who will
speak about Evangelical Christians and Israel. On Friday
November 21st we will mark Interfaith Families Shabbat,
a new program for us. Please come support these innovative adult-learning Shabbat programs. Also, please mark
your calendar for our annual Peabody Interfaith Thanksgiving Service on Tuesday November 25th at 7pm at
St. Thomas the Apostle Church.
For the young people in our congregation, we have another "Teddy Bear Shabbat" coming up on November 7th, as
well as "Havdallah and Family Movie Night" (for the
young and the young at heart!) on Saturday November
22nd.

Thanksgivukkah: One Year Later
Can you believe it was just one year ago when
we were dreaming of turkey with latkes, cranberry sauce with sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts)
and pecan pie with (pareve) chocolate gelt.?
Yes, we return to calendrical normalcy, as
5775/Fall 2014 presents a more typical American-Jewish holiday arrangement.
But fear thee not, as holiday bereft
“Mar”Cheshvan makes its annual sojourn.
There are ample opportunities to celebrate a
simcha, from young families to octogenarians
and everyone in between. Fresh from a wonderful Sukkot dinner (thank you Men’s Club!),
we united in our inaugural Conserva-form class
service with Temple Beth Shalom.
We
davened with the Gates of Prayer family siddur,
welcomed four participating clergy, and celebrated the emerging voices of our sizable (when
combined) kitah Bet class.
By the time you read this, we will have shared
our sacred space with Dr. Marvin Wilson and
the young divinity students at Gordon College.

even our own congregation through stories,

I would be remiss if I didn’t admit that whenever we have a large dinner on Friday night, we
seldom reach a minyan Shabbat morning,
which means that we do not read Torah, skip
several prayers, and delete the Kaddish. That
being said, we have so much to be thankful for,
as our TNT community remains vibrant and
vital. So many dedicate so much time and effort to make Temple Ner Tamid such a special

Teddy Bear Shabbat services return on the first

feeling--young, I am pleased to announce the
next Musical Shabbat (December 5th) will feature beloved children’s music from films spanning six decades. Matt Wulf returns to lend his
brilliance to the melodic proceedings. That
event will catapult us toward Chanukah, but I
will save that discussion for the Kislev bulletin.
But, as I have discussed in past Cheshvan bulletins, we—as a community—share a golden opportunity to redefine our spiritual focus. For
those who have not had the chance to pray with
us on Saturday morning for a while, I exhort
you to come back and give us a try. And for

“Like the Energizer Bunny the Men’s Club keeps on
going and going and going and here we go again”
Hello everyone,
We are just catching our breath from the holidays of Sukkot and
Simchat Torah. Hats off to Allen Talewsky and his fantastic
committee for a most enjoyable dinner and celebration of Sukkot.
Everyone who attended remarked on how pleasant an evening it
was. The level of energy, excitement and noise of young children’s voices was high when we rolled out the Torah for Simchat
Torah and consecrated our youngest students. It was really wonderful to see the activity taking place in the Temple. My thanks
go to Mel Babner for seeing that our traditional ice cream social
went off without a hitch.
The older students in our community began their preconfirmation and confirmation classes on September 30 th. These
classes are open to students in grades 8-10. This year a new
model of learning has been introduced. Students are encouraged
to take their Jewish learning and experiences outside of the classroom. Using a point system, students can earn points for a variety of activities with a goal of earning at least 15 points by the end
of the school year. Students can earn points by attending classes,
which are held one to two times per month at TBS, as well as
attending Torah Hub classes, Adult education programs, Jewish
youth group activities, viewing Jewish museum exhibits and
films, or reading a Jewish book. For activities such as watching
movies and reading books, students must complete a one-page
reflection essay. Students seem excited about the independence
this model provides in guiding their Jewish education.
I would also like to note that educating our educators is an important goal for Cantor Robins, Director of Education. A variety
of opportunities for continuing education are available to the
religious school teachers. These include speakers brought into
staff meetings, as well as making teachers aware of outside conferences. A guest speaker at a recent staff meeting focused on
“working with families where one parent comes from a different
faith”. Upcoming speakers will discuss strategies and techniques
to support teaching students with special needs. Providing continuing education to our teachers is just one example of what
goes on behind the scenes to support our children’s Jewish education.
Speaking of Mel, many of us traveled to Brockton on October
26th to honor our newest recipient of the New England Region
Keeper of the Flame. For those of you who know Mel, this honor is well deserved. For those of you who don’t know Mel, let me
share some of his TNT involvement.
For the past 50 years, he has been involved in Temple activities,
serving as House Chairman, on the Board of Directors, and as Shalom,
Men’s Club President from 1969-1970. His initial involvement Linda Gross
into Men’s Club was as a clown at children’s functions. One of Vice President

as we attend a performance that will keep you laughing throughout the afternoon! This will
be followed by dinner at The Beverly Depot.

Car pools will be assembling at Temple Ner Tamid in Peabody at
1:00 PM.
We strongly recommend that you make your own driving arrangements, since only limited car pools will be available. As a token of
appreciation to our drivers, we ask that each passenger contribute
$2.00 for the ride. Please let us know if you’ll need a ride when
making your reservation so we can plan accordingly.

Tickets will cost $39.00; the cost of the meal will be determined
by what you order.
