I’m truly delighted and honoured to have been chosen as
Ambassador of the Gift of the Year Awards, and to be a part of
this great competition that produces so many success stories.
Many of the people who go shopping won’t give a thought about
the hard work that has gone into producing the winning and
highly commended Gift of the Year products they will be buying in
2016. And why should they?
Spring Fair is the UK’s No.1 gift & home event.
So we’re delighted to support The Gift of the Year Awards and
provide a showcase for the shortlisted finalists and winners,
all of which have been recognised as "best in class” by a panel
of retail industry experts.
Cath founded Cath Kidston Ltd in 1993 in a small store
in London’s Notting Hill with a start up budget of just
£15,000. From her original ‘home store' concept she built
and developed the business into the influential and highly
recognised global brand it is today.
But from personal experience I know that the design process can
be painful – indeed, many ideas often fall on stony ground. But
there are few things to match the joy of seeing something truly
innovative go from the drawing board and land successfully
into retail.
Prior to starting Cath Kidston, Cath co-founded the
interior design and ‘Curtainalia’ company named
Mckinney Kidston based in a store off the King’s Road in
Chelsea. (1988-1993) Prior to that she trained in interior
design under the celebrated decorator Nicholas Haslam
(1985-1988).
The designers behind this year’s successful Gift of the Year
products will not only experience that indescribable thrill, but
hopefully will also have their talent recognised both personally
and commercially.
I send my heartiest congratulations to them – and to the
suppliers who spotted their talent and gave them the opportunity
to express themselves.
The 2016 awards are, as ever, eagerly anticipated, and I’m very
proud that Spring Fair is once more headline sponsor of this
prestigious event.
Cath Kidston Ltd now boasts more than 60 stores across
the UK, 3 of which are in Ireland. There are now well
over 100 stores across Asia, Europe and the Middle East
and a global on line business.

from the all-important small independents to the high street
chains, the multi-channel operators and of course the crucial

I’m told that this year’s competition attracted the highest
number of entries in living memory – and that the judges were
particularly impressed by the innovation shown by companies.

Gift of the Year awards are given to the most original and
innovative new-to-market products which are seen to make
great gifts while also being commercially viable.
Before the competition even opens, our judges, along with the
Giftware Association team, scout potential entrants at various
trade shows throughout the year. By the time Autumn Fair rolls
around, and the competition opens, there is already plenty of
interest from entrants and judges alike.
The first round of judging took place online on the Gift of the
Year website, when the judges were each assigned a number
of categories relevant to their commercial interests, and came
together to create shortlists for each category. At this stage, all
they had to judge were submitted photographs, descriptions, and
other information such as trade and retail prices.
The second round of the judging took place here in
Birmingham’s illustrious Jewellery Quarter, home of the Giftware
Association. This year, we treated our judges to a day at the
Jewellery Quarter Museum, a perfect venue to show off the
shortlisted products. Here, the judges could view the products in
person, and make their final decisions about which products are
winners, and which are highly commended. At last, the judges
look at all the winners, and from them select the Judges’ Choice
– the winner of winners.

The judging panel for 2016 was carefully chosen to
ensure that the eclectic range of products entered
into the competition were reviewed by a broad range
of experts across the industry. From independent gift
shops to large department stores, online retailers and
garden centre chains, the judges buy from a multitude
of sub-sectors, and all seek to celebrate the creative
talent at the heart of our industry.

Having had an early career with Air
France at Heathrow, Suzie relocated
to Norfolk and started working for
Jarrolds, a flagship independent store in
Norwich, in 1989 and became a buyer
in 1994. Her areas of responsibility
include Beauty, Fragrance and
Men's Grooming; Retail Stationery;
Christmas, and Hosiery. She also has a
marketing role and writes copy for store
publications and a regular monthly page
in a local magazine. Suzie has been a
greeting card judge for the Progressive
Greetings awards for several years
and is a director of Copra (Cosmetics
& Perfumery Retailers Association),
attending regular meetings and industry
events with major retailers around
the UK.
Sara has worked at John Lewis since
she graduated from Birmingham
University in 2001 with a degree
in textile design. She started out in
lampshades and bases, moving to
Living and Dining furniture, followed
by the Christmas shop, stationery, gift
food, wall decor and currently the gift
and home and Candleshop department
where she has held the role of buyer for
the past two years.
Born in Hertfordshire, Ronnie’s early
life was greatly influenced by his art
teacher, who, although she encouraged
Ronnie in all academic matters, had a
great influence on his outlook on life,
especially in appreciation for what can
only be described as “style” in living.
Tina started her gift trade career 40
years ago as a sales agent. After 15
years she opened a coffee/gift shop
in Stalybridge, Cheshire called ‘Owls
Hoot’ and then a card/gift shop in
Oswaldtwistle Mills, Lancashire.
Alison Cant is Head of Merchandising
at the Victoria and Albert Museum,
responsible for range planning and
analysis, delivery of trading KPI, stock
management and wholesale trading.
Yvonne Carr has been involved in the
gift and jewellery industry for 25 years.
She was the Retail Director with Ortak
Jewellery until April 2014, and took up
her new position as Retail Operations
Manager with New Lanark, a World
Heritage Site in June 2014.
From school Ronnie entered a three
year design and display course, using
his newly acquired skills at several West
End Stores before he eventually worked
at the Old Vic Theatre, which was then
followed by Ronnie establishing the
book shop at The National Theatre, a
post held for over 20 years.
Her new shop in Skipton is fast growing
a reputation for unusual cards and gifts.
Having viewed and worked on both
sides of the counter, Tina feels well
qualified to be a judge for the Gift of the
Year Awards.
The V&A celebrates creativity and
design at the highest level. From its
earliest days the museum has been a
place of inspiration. The Commercial
Department identifies and develops
commercial potential, working with
collaborators across the creative
industries, building successful
partnerships and ensuring integrity
and value.

Suzie Abel
Yvonne is an experienced retailer
with a particular interest in store
developments, buying and product
development. Her new role
encompasses new categories such
as textiles, fair trade and a focus on
bespoke design projects.
Leaving London to settle in Devon,
Ronnie continued this influence of
“style” through his gift shop established
in 1989, with its theme of “Gifts for
Gentlemen” – one of the first in the UK.

Henri Davis
Meike started her retail career as an
apprentice in an exclusive independent
ladies fashion store near Hamburg.
She then went on to study fashion and
business before joining the Harrods
buying team as the Outerwear and Plus
collections buyer. During her "babybreak" Meike started Greensleeves
Clothing, introducing organic children's
clothing to the UK as a wholesaler /
agent.
As an independent retail advisor to
businesses in the cards, gifts, stationery
and heritage industries, Henri combines
30 years of retail experience with her
knowledge of trends and consumer
motivation to analyse markets and
identify new opportunities. She has
worked at Habitat, Next, WH Smith
and the National Trust and she now
works with many small and mediumsized businesses, including multi-site
retailers, national and international
manufacturers and suppliers. For more

She later joined the Burford Garden
Company as the clothing and children's
store buyer. Her portfolio evolved over
the years and she has recently been
appointed Buying director for Burford.

Fergusson
Martin is ‘Senior Buying Manager Non
Food’ for Ocado PLC and has been
working in retail since 1978, when he
joined BHS’s Buyer Training Programme.
He has worked for many high profile
businesses including Tesco, Capespan,
Parripak Foods and Holland & Barrett
and his expertise includes everything
from fashion and homewares through
to electrical goods and fruit and
vegetables.
Amanda has been involved in marketing
gifts for over 25 years. Initially she ran
her own business, before taking on
the management of national accounts
at Andrew Brownsword, and then at
Hallmark she was responsible for the
Forever Friends brand in her role as
head of communications and PR. She
has also served as a non-executive
director for a manufacturing company.
At Ocado he heads up a team of
buyers and assistants responsible for
all seasonal, outdoor, DIY, gifts, toys,
BBQ and picnicware, making him
ideally placed to identify Gift of the Year
entrants with the elusive ‘X Factor’,
which makes a gift not simply good
but great. Martin also has particular
expertise in spotting gifts for men.
In recent years Amanda has been sales
director at Caroline Gardner during
a period of exciting growth. Amanda
recently resigned from this position to
have a short career break.
Amanda is delighted to join the Gift of
the Year judging panel.

Judith Harris
Jo started her career in retail at Home
Retail Group with Argos in 2006, where
she spent the next 6 years of her
career. She has since then pursued
her passion in buying in various roles
within different businesses, and is
currently the buyer for Gift and Cards
and Stationary for the largest garden
centre chain, Wyevale Garden Centres
Ltd. What she loves about her job the
most is of course the product, but also
the different aspects of the role as no
day is the same.
Judith Harris is Buying and
Merchandising Director (Non
Horticulture/Christmas) for Dobbies
Garden Centres. Founded in 1865 as
a seeds business, Dobbies has grown
into one of the UK’s leading garden
centre groups with 2015 marking its
150th anniversary. In 2007 Dobbies
became part of the Tesco Group, whilst
remaining at its Edinburgh base, and
has over 16 million customers every
year through its 35 stores and online at
www.dobbies.com. Judith knows what
makes a great gift, being responsible
for home, outdoor, lifestyle and food
product ranges, including Christmas.
She has been a judge on "Gift of the
Year" since 2008.

Following marriage and children, in
1987 Jane started selling stocking
fillers and gifts at charity fairs.
When Mark opened the doors of the first Postmark
in Balham, south London, 12 years ago he had one
goal - to bring the very best of UK and internationally
designed cards to his customers at competitive
prices while providing top notch customer care.
Mark is the founder and owner
of Occasions Direct – an
online store selling everything
you need to celebrate all those
special occasions.
Following a 36- year career within two of the UK's
most prestigious department stores - Harrods and
the John Lewis Partnership - Jenny now uses her
knowledge and experience in running her own retail
consultancy.
Three shops and a growing online business later, this
approach has been a huge hit with his customers
and earned him the title of ‘Best Independent Card
Retailer – London’, an unprecedented three times.
Since its launch six years ago,
Mark has successfully steered
Occasions through a rapidly
changing online landscape
and attributes much of their
success to creating strong
supplier relationships and
developing their own product
ideas in an increasingly
competitive marketplace.
In 2013 Mark joined The
Giftware Association’s National
Committee, to help support
and develop the services
offered by The GA to the
e-tail sector.
Nathaniel grew up in South West London before
studying Architecture at the University of Liverpool. After
deciding to pursue a career in retail, he cut his teeth
at designer furniture retailer Heal’s, buying seasonal
home accessories. From here he joined British fashion
institution Paul Smith, where he sourced and developed
an eclectic mix of merchandise for the company’s
international retail stores. He currently works for the
National Gallery in London, buying gifts, homeware,
jewellery and textiles for the gallery’s trading arm.
She recognised the demand for
presents for men and in 1989
produced her first mail order
catalogue. In 2000, hers was one
of the first companies to have a
transactional website.
Additional brands including Gifts for
the Girls, Travel Paraphernalia and
Essentials followed. Producing a new
catalogue every seven weeks, holding
over 2,500 lines in stock, the brand
continues to grow with the creation of
its first Spring gift catalogue. In 2014,
to coincide with the 25th Anniversary
of Presents for Men, Jane introduced
a new umbrella brand, Qwerkity, to
reflect her success in identifying
quirky and unusual gifts.

A well-established figure in the industry, Mark is
always on the search for new designs and works
closely with some of the country’s top publishers,
sharing ideas and trying out new lines.
As well as cards, Postmark also sells a range of
stationery and quality pens, an area Mark is keen to
expand as his business grows.

Mark working alongside his wife, Leona, running
their stores in Balham, East Dulwich and Chiswick

Jane Hudson
As 'Sense Of Retail', she works with both established
retailers and suppliers across the home and giftware
categories. She also mentors SMEs in the sector,
including brands new to market - helping them reach
a wider audience and present themselves effectively
in a professional and competitive environment, online
and offline.

Claire Stammers is a buyer for David Mann & Sons, an
independent department store based in Cranleigh, Surrey.
Her buying responsibilities are toys, novelties, bath and body,
luggage, cards and gift wrap.
Simon is currently a senior buyer with the online
private sale club Achica, based in London and
looking after the Toys, Garden (gifts, furniture and
accessories), Christmas and Stationary categories.
Natalie Yates is founder of Gifts From Handpicked, an online
boutique of Gifts and Homewares.
Prior to retail, Claire owned a photographic company for over
15 years, as well as raising her four children. Then she began
working in retail and realised this was the career path for
her. Claire is able to use her creative flair, retail knowledge
and market understanding to discover and buy innovative
products, making her newly established toy department a
sought after destination.
Previous employers include - Al Jazeera in Qatar
and Sparkies in The Czech Republic, where Simon
designed, built and sourced the merchandise for
their own toy and gifts shops. In addition, sourcing
products for Imagixx in the USA, Wembley playcraft
and Wanted in the UK. Previous to all this, Simon
worked for twenty years in Harrods of Knightsbridge
where the last eleven years was spent as a senior
buyer in the toy kingdom.
After 16 years experience as the greeting card
buyer for a large department store, Zoë York set
up Squashed Tomato seven years ago. Squashed
Tomato initially started as an on-line retailer of
greeting cards but has since expanded widely
into the gift market, with particular emphasis on
Christmas products. Business is principally done
through an Amazon shop front. Zoë now runs the
business while continuing her role with Fenwick
part-time. With a foot in both camps, she brings high
street and on-line experience to the judging panel.
Originally Natalie was a Business Support Manager for a large
contract caterer until she was made redundant in 2007, using
her redundancy package to set up her gift business. Natalie has
used her previous skills and sheer determination and passion to
succeed online and become a well known name in the industry.
Just recently she has beaten over 2000 entrants to be crowned
Best Online Business at the Mumpreneur Awards, a Company
supporting working mums in Business. What's nice for Natalie is
that her business was never a big business plan and was simply
set up to try a new career path to fit in with her children. Now
Natalie employs five members of staff, has moved premises,
launched a second website and is a speaker at Spring and
Autumn Fair passing on her knowledge and experience to others
hoping to set up the gift industry. Gifts from Handpicked caters for
all ages and gifts for all occasions. Now in its seventh year you
should agree that Natalie has taste for great gifts and will make
an excellent Judge!

The Gift of the Year awards have been a true reflection of the
innovation and creativity without the gift industry for over
35 years now. The 2016 competition illustrated this spirit of
innovation once again.
The competition is organised by the Giftware Association, and
is supported by a number of key players in our industry. In
particular, we are delighted to have i2i Events as our headline
sponsor. We are extremely grateful to all our sponsors, featured
throughout this brochure. All of you give vital support; without
you, these awards couldn’t happen.
We are also incredibly grateful to i2i for hosting the awards
ceremony at Spring Fair in Birmingham. Spring Fair is the
largest trade fair in the UK, welcoming tens of thousands of
buyers, all of whom are looking for successful and unique
products to kick-start their trading year. It is therefore the
perfect time and setting to announce these awards.
Throughout the competition’s history, we’ve seen a huge
number of exceptional products taking centre stage, and this
year has been no exception. The standard and number of

organiser of the Gift of the Year competition, which
has been running since 1979. we are the trade
representative body and the only UK trade association
dedicated to serving the gift and home industry.
The GA recognises the importance of supporting the
enormous talent and creativity of its members, ranging
from retailers to suppliers, high street brand names to
individual crafters.
