We are privileged to honor her this evening. As an artist, Aristides' work is distinguished by her extraordinary draftsmanship and expressive, flowing brushstrokes, rendering a sense of movement and life within her subjects. The effect is effortless and sublime, but deeper inspection reveals a rugged complexity and technical mastery. Her palette is lively and bold, and her work ranges from quietly composed still-lifes to dramatic figurative work. Her work evokes an inner world and takes us into her exploration of identity in her roles of artist, writer and teacher. AS A TEACHER, Juliette works to impart the same rigorous and intentional training that she received. Trained at the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, she was an original member of the Water Street Atelier. She shares her perspectives with audiences around the world, as a renowned speaker, workshop artist, regular contributor to The Artist’s Magazine and writer, with three published books on Classical Drawing and Classical Painting, and a fourth scheduled for release in 2016. Tonight we celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the Aristides Atelier, Juliette’s labor of love and a key part of her efforts to rebuild a traditional arts education in the United States. The Aristides Atelier allows a small group of select students to study classical technique intensively for several years, and has become a luminous model for a new Atelier scene taking form in the Pacific Northwest and the country. The Aristides Atelier has trained more than 100 young artists and seeded a new generation of painters grounded in a traditional curriculum of classical arts. “ When I started, technical mastery was the main thing that I cared about. I cared about the art and the skill, and after 15 years, it’s all about the people. It’s all about the people.” —Juliette Aristides THANK YOU FOR JOINING US to celebrate Juliette’s many accomplishments this evening, most especially the anniversary of this exceptional and ever-evolving Atelier program. Congratulations Juliette, and thank you for making Gage Academy of Art your home for fifteen years. LIVE AUCTION LIVE AUCTION L-1 L-3 COCKTAIL PACKAGE MICHAEL FRIEL Tray of Vodka Martinis Skokomish Flats VALUE: $150 Oil, 17 x 21 in. Let’s get this party started! Your auctioneer extraordinaire Matt Smith wants to start the night off right! L-2 ANTHONY RYDER Portrait Drawing Class Demo + Sketchbook Pencil on paper, 28 x 21.75 in. VALUE: $400 “In recent years I’ve been painting on Hood Canal, just south of Union. This painting was done in plein air from a location along Highway 106, where the Skokomish River flows into Annas Bay creating a vast estuary called the Skokomish Flats. On this day, looking north toward the Great Bend of the canal, foothills of the Olympic Mountains can be seen in the background.” L-4 TOM HOFFMANN Ritmo del Techo Watercolor, 24 x 30 in. VALUE: $975 “These portrait drawings demonstrate various principles and methods of the drawing process. The class in which I did the drawings was devoted to the subject of the block-in of the portrait, which is the preliminary stage in the portrait drawing process. A great deal of knowledge, if it is understood, can be applied at this stage. The purpose of the demonstrations was to share this understanding with the students.” This is a truly unique item revealing how an artist works. Nationally known artist Tony Ryder has contributed his demonstration sketchbook from last summer’s sold-out Portrait Drawing Workshop. This sketchbook includes one framed drawing and five additional portrait sketches. VALUE: $999.99 “Over decades, I've come to believe that a scene like the rooftop view of part of Oaxaca wants to be treated abstractly for as long as possible. There are far too many individual shapes, each with its own identity to try to represent them accurately, at least for me. If I look at the scene as pure form rather than as narrative content, it resolves into a few layers of paint in an obvious sequence. Ironically, the story still gets told.” Tom Hoffmann is represented by Fountainhead Gallery, Seattle, WA. L-5 TERRY FURCHGOTT Pink Flowers in a Yellow Vase Acrylic on paper, 15.25 x 14 in. VALUE: $950 “Pink Flowers in a Yellow Vase” as well as my painting in general is very much about color as both an emotional vehicle and a statement of pure visual beauty.” Terry Furchgott is represented by Lisa Harris Gallery, Seattle, WA. 5 6 LIVE AUCTION LIVE AUCTION L-6 L-8 LOIS SILVER RODGER HAYDEN JOHNSON Market Highstall Home Place Oil bar, 17.56 x 14.56 in. Oil on canvas, 43 x 62 3/16 in. VALUE: $1,400 VALUE: $7,900 “I paint all of my paintings with oil bars and my right index finger. There are layers over layers of color; my goal is to have the fruit in this painting stand out like shimmering jewels. I paint a layer of color, let it dry, scrape it down slightly with a razor blade, and then add another color on top. Oil bars have more pigment than regular oil paints in a tube so the colors are richer. We had a studio near the market in the 70's and 80's so the market is always like ‘home’.” Roger Hayden Johnson captures the rich colors of sunlight at dawn and dusk in his architectural landscapes and seascapes. He travels the back roads of the Southwest in search of old and indigenous architectural structures. Lois Silver is represented by Lisa Harris Gallery, Seattle, WA. L-7 Donated by the estate of Richard Hirsch Roger Hayden Johnson is represented by Arcature Fine Art, Palm Beach, FL, Gallery Valentine, East Hampton, NY, Manitou Galleries in Santa Fe, NM, and Mirada Fine Art, Indian Hills, CO. L-9 DAVID DWYER LYLE SILVER Trio of Pears Reclining Figure Oil on canvas, 13 x 18 in. VALUE: $2,100 Oil bar, 29 x 41 in. VALUE: $1,200 This drawing is a 45 minute pose, drawn with oil bars and at times touched with a brush and turpentine. Lyle wanted to capture the strength and density of the body in a quick and loose fashion. “Still life painting gives the artist an opportunity to create their own world, and it can have special intimacy. In our daily life we are often overwhelmed with noise, discordant images, and competing voices. I try to provide a tranquil, quiet atmosphere in my paintings and let simple objects achieve a stately dignity and sense of calm.” David Dwyer was the 2010 Gage Art Award Honoree. Lyle Silver is represented by Patricia Rovzar Gallery, Seattle, WA. WIN IT NOW! 7 MAKE IT YOURS IMMEDIATELY & receive a coupon for $450 towards one class or workshop! VALUE: $2,000 VALUE: $150 PER PERSON [LIMITED SPOTS AVAILABLE] SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at 6:00pm Kimberly is interested in the history of consciousness and how, through art history, artists have documented, revised and shaped our understanding of ourselves. She uses pastoral, Arcadian themes in her work as a way of exploring her own relationship to the stories and structures that define us. Kimberly Trowbridge is represented by Blindfold Gallery, Seattle, WA. Tour the remarkable private American Art collection and home of local collectors Allan and Mary Kollar with special guest Juliette Aristides. Allan and Mary look forward to welcoming you to their Capitol Hill home Wednesday, May 4 at 6 pm. The Kollar family began collecting in the 1970s and their collection includes primarily 19th20th century (from the Hudson River School forward) American paintings, sculpture, pottery, furniture and windows (Frank Lloyd Wright, John LaFarge). American artists include John Singer Sargent, Albert Bierstadt, George Bellows, Reginald Marsh, Jacob Lawrence, Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer and some American modernists such as Stuart Davis. Their fine art prints include Reginald Marsh, Edward Hopper, Rembrandt, Matisse, Picasso, Albrect Durer, and Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Wine and light hors d’oeuvres will be served. L-13 JOSHUA LANGSTAFF La Demoiselle en Rouge Oil on panel, 31 x 25 in. VALUE: $3,200 “My train of thought ran to Picasso and his famous painting of prostitutes as bathers, 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon'. This in turn brought up ideas about abstract versus realistic portrayal in art. I don't intend that the subject is identified as a prostitute, but as a point of reflection on these ideas.” L-11 PATRICK LOCICERO L-14 Boat Stack Oil on paper with collage, 46 x 37 in. JULIETTE ARISTIDES VALUE: $3,200 “My paintings refer to the idea of traveling as a metaphor for multiple kinds of passage – literally, symbolically and culturally. I am fascinated by the idea of physically moving from one place to another, as well as the concept of moving through memories and associations from one time period to another. In my paintings, the use of overlap and collage is directly related to the images I depict. I use the collage material to guide me to the iconography that becomes the focus of the painting.” Patrick LoCicero is represented by Patricia Rovzar Gallery. The Model Oil on canvas, 24 x 19-1/2 in. VALUE: $5,500 “Traditional skills are necessary for developing a foundational base for the artist to work from. It is craftsmanship that opens the door to effective self-expression. I am excited about teaching the methods from our artistic inheritance. I know that once this knowledge becomes commonplace again, it can only enrich our cultural life.” Juliette Aristides is the 2016 Gage Art Award Honoree. She is represented by John Pence Gallery, San Francisco, CA. 9 10 LIVE AUCTION LIVE AUCTION L-15 L-18 MARK KANG-O’HIGGINS Tray of Port Field Fonseca Porto Bin 27 VALUE: $ 150 Oil on panel, 24 1/16 x 48 in. So I dropped everything and took up art.” Mark Kang-O’Higgins is represented by Prographica/fine works on paper, Seattle, WA. Endlessly fascinating.” Gary Faigin is represented by Linda Hodges Gallery, Seattle, WA. Along the corridors of Gage’s building, Lowell Poisson is considered a hero to many Gage students. He is a scholarship student who went on to the New York Academy. It is an honor to have Lowell Poisson here tonight to share his journey and experiences at Gage. TAM took the painting down off the wall and gave me a special studio in which to paint and study. I made a DVD about the experience and what I learned about Aspevig's color and composition choices; it is included with your purchase of the painting.” L-17 THE ART OF DESSERT Melissa Weinman is represented by Gail Severn Gallery, Seattle, WA. VALUE: $1,200 VALUE: $1,200 “This drybrush watercolor is an accurate and measured ‘portrait’ of a basket made by a member of the Tohono O'odam tribe (formerly known as the Papago tribe). I hope there is no artistic interpretation to get in the way of the viewer's enjoyment; the basket can speak for itself.” “I use nutmegs in my still life work for several reasons: nutmegs are from Indonesia, a country I'm fond of and have spent a lot of time traveling through. Also, it's a nod to past Dutch still-life paintings, which often featured fruit that was native to its colonies. Finally, I basically needed a pair of spherical shapes to balance out the foreground.” Margaret Davidson is represented by Sisko Gallery, Seattle, WA. She was the 2014 Gage Art Award Honoree. L-25 L-22 TED KUTSCHER MICHAEL GRIMALDI Sailboats at le Grand Bassin Rond (Tuileries) Graphite, charcoal, enamel and oil on paper, 24 x 18.5 in. Oil on board, 30 7/8 x 23 3/8 in. L-23 JOHN RIZZOTTO Solstice VALUE: $3,200 “I started as a workshop instructor at Gage in 1997 (as a substitute for Anthony Ryder when he took a year-long leave of absence from teaching) and have returned annually as a visiting instructor and guest lecturer.” SPRING HAS SPRUNG! 17 Registration for more than 80 new spring quarter programs for adult artists of all skill-levels is open NOW at Jug With Plums Oil on canvas, 18 x 15 in. VALUE: $150 PER PERSON VALUE: $1,200 [LIMITED SPOTS AVAILABLE] “For me, drawing is an integral part of the picture making process. It provides the opportunity to explore many variations of the subject I’m about to paint. Through drawing, I can consider and distill an idea, enabling me to make better creative decisions. Additionally, there is the added joy of simply drawing for drawing’s sake.” Special Conditions: Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 6:00 pm Cocktails & Buffet Supper by Ravishing Radish Cathy Sarkowsky is a life-long collector. Her art collection began evolving eclectically and haphazardly in the 1980s. The driving force behind her inspiring and beautiful art collection is a passionate, intuitive eye. Brown, Sherry Markovitz, Gregory Halili, Jazz-minh Moore, Jennifer Knaus, Darren Waterston, Fay Jones, David Kane, Anne Marie Grgich, Robert Bissell, Ford Crull, Joe Max Emminger, Jason Wheatley, John Rizzotto and Marion Peck, among many other local, national and internationally exhibited artists. As a successful mid-career artist, Cathy mixes her collection with her own work, creating an exciting and ever changing “conversation”. Her work, as well as the artwork she has collected, is vibrant, colorful, visually stimulating and varied. In visiting Cathy’s home and studio, you will have a chance to engage with a collector AND artist, see art in the studio, discuss how an eclectic collection is created and displayed but most importantly, witness how the life of this artist and collector are fully integrated. WINE PACKAGE VALUE: $1,700 Masterpiece Quartet: Lynch Bages ’89, ’90, ’96 & ‘99 “Ceres is from the painting series ‘In Search of Self’ where I try to merge classical techniques with my eastern roots, expressing deeper experience and emotions. In this series, I try to paint from my imagination, and based my composition on the Chinese calligraphy and Sumi painting sensibility. Every painting begins with an abstract background and the realism of fruit materialized reaching out to the viewers.” 15 VALUE: $1151 Properly cellared by Ron Taylor, this exclusive wine package features four bottles of Bordeaux from Chateau Lynch Bages in the Paulliac region of France. 16 LIVE AUCTION LIVE AUCTION L-31 L-33 MEG HOLGATE ANDREW HARE Morning Beloved Oil on canvas, 24 x 24 in. Acrylic on canvas, 30 x 36 in. VALUE: $2,800 VALUE: $1,900 Meg Holgate sees our natural landscape as universal perfection. Her paintings are moments of beauty simply rendered on canvas with thin veils of muted color and quiet line-form. The framework for her system of visual storytelling is constructed through a lens that continually explores light and dark, stillness and movement, and soft focus and sharp shapes. “I am attracted to the way sunlight illuminates doorways and creates shadows on walls. I was drawn to this image by the way the shadows seem to slice the composition diagonally. The red chair is one of my earliest memories as the first chair I was able to crawl up and into. As the painting evolved, I added parts of different images and elements, real and imagined, hoping to encourage viewers to create their own story.” Meg Holgate is represented by Abmeyer + Wood Fine Arts, Seattle, WA. L-32 L-34 PATTI WARASHINA JOE MAX EMMINGER Fly Swatter (2007) #9/20 Drypoint w/stencils and hand coloring on paper, 31.75 x 23.25 in. VALUE: $1,200 “My prints allude to a personal and anxious state of mind in a world filled with uncertainties and concern. I sometimes think of myself as a voyeur, looking from the outside into pulsating scenes that have frequent and underlying feelings of uneasiness. Some of these events can, at times, profoundly affect the balance of harmony overnight.” Patti Warashina is represented by Abmeyer + Wood Fine Arts, Seattle, WA. Family Photo Acrylic on wood panel, 24 x 18 in. VALUE: $650 “I am influenced by the totem poles around Seattle. I like seeing things piled on top of each other. This painting is a family totem. My painting has grown to be less about learning how to paint and more about getting down to what I see, feel and experience. The paintings evolve as I paint them – I try to stay out of the way and let them happen – I try to leave room for them to breathe and live in the world.” Joe Max Emminger is represented by Linda Hodges Gallery, Seattle, WA. DORSEY Women’s Work Portrait Sketch of Ms. R.C. Oil, acrylic and charcoal on canvas, 18 x 24 in. Graphite on paper, 17 3/8 x 16 3/8 in. VALUE: $800 VALUE: $600 “This piece is like many of mine, a painting over another painting. It started as a list of "women’s work", a comprehensive list of items I'd learned and jobs I'd done over my lifetime. I then turned it on its side, and painted a still life on it. I wanted it to look as though there was a shelf on a window ledge, looking out. The words are still there, but obscured.” “This particular drawing is from 2011. It is a profile portrait sketch that I extended to add more detail in specific areas. I often get happily caught in details since there is beauty to it, as well as the dynamic movement and energy the subjects bring in.” S-2 S-5 WINE PACKAGE TENOLD SUNDBERG Curated Case of Wine Untitled VALUE: $500 SILENT AUCTION Oil on panel, 15 1/8 x 12 1/4 in. Since his time with Aristides, he has gone on to study at museums including the Prado, the Louvre, the National Gallery DC and the Frye Art Museum. Egg tempera, 12 x 10 in. VALUE: $300 “I have been painting and drawing for over 30 years, and in that time the theme that has been consistent is the search for a structure beyond the visible. I’ve started painting in egg tempera because of its qualities that take a slight step out of naturalism, and into a more unseen or spiritual realm. These qualities include a more drawing-like, hard edge and closed form, which emphasizes abstraction, as opposed to soft or lost edges possible in oil paint, which lends itself well to naturalistic rendering.” WIN IT NOW! VALUE: $1000 VALUE: $495 This “Masterpiece Dinner” is designed to immerse ten guests in a featured artist’s world, pairing food, wine and music to create an inspired experience. Starting with appetizers and apertivos, the evening begins with an in-depth art history lecture by Gage’s Artistic Director Gary Faigin entitled “Ten European Art Masterworks That Everyone Should See Before They Die,” followed by a sumptuous three- course thematic feast with wine in the candle-lit Madison Studio at Gage Academy of Art. "To me it is all about the glow of the color and nothing glows more than multiple glazes of transparent oil paint. Beginning intuitively with a multicolored application of thinned oil paint manipulated by my finger in a torn up T-shirt, I use brushstrokes, rag blots and fingernail accents to develop the subject. For the glow, I use subsequent layers of thin glazes with occasional thick impasto to create a final result that is deceptively realistic with radiant transparent colors that change with the light.” Pat Clayton is represented by Horizon Fine Art, Jackson Hole, WY and Alki Arts, Seattle, WA. VALUE: $600 VALUE: $400 “In this process of learning about life and art, one realizes the editing process is essential in all endeavors. Whether a bird or a bookshelf, there comes a time when one must ask, ‘how can I say this simply and wisely?’ Less is more is the common teaching that comes to mind. Even in my architectural design, I am (finally) pulling away from those additional scripted lines that don’t pertain and can certainly be eliminated. Conversation can be edited as well; keeping it to oneself is most powerful. As this bird went through transformation, I am also taking on the (earnest) role as supreme editor; at least in my life and work; one in the same.” “For many people gold represents wealth – a wealth that will never be attained, but is always strived for. In some cases, it represents a wealth that is visible on the surface, but is only skin deep. This aspect is not true in the case of the David Bowie. Not only did David Bowie glitter with gold, he was pure gold. He gave many artists the ability to dream about an unrepressed self, one that can be flashy in one moment and simple and utilitarian in another. S-13 Shelly Leavens is represented by PUNCH Gallery, Seattle, WA. The David Bowie Makeup bag has an element of ridiculousness to it, sure, but it is also an incredibly functional and useful bag. Painters such as Sargent, Freud, Cole, Carrière, Corbet, Delacroix and Michelangelo have served as an inspiration for the caliber of work that I strive to produce. The spirit of these artists was to ravenously seek out the knowledge and tools that would allow them to best express their artistic vision. I feel a kinship with their appetite for pushing the limits of one's abilities, and for learning from those who have come before.” “My work could be described as quiet, beautiful and precise. I prefer simplicity of composition, clarity of message and emotional appeal. I create art because I admire the skill and beauty evident in realist works of antiquity and modernity, and I strive for that in my own work.” SILENT AUCTION . VALUE: $500 VALUE: $400 “Sea stacks, pristine and full of wild life, hold a special place in my heart. When we observe nature and its cycles, we see both the intrinsic beauty of the landscape and its importance in our lives. For twenty four years I have worked to develop the skills to express this. I hope my paintings will help others to enjoy and preserve our ever-diminishing open spaces, be they home gardens, parks, parkways, forests or seashores.” “I was standing in a grocery store, and a specific persimmon caught my gaze, and I studied it at length. Back in the studio, this piece became the result of my first fully finished painting since graduation where I set out with a clear goal and followed a strategic approach nearly the whole way through to a successful result. For me, this painting describes my growth and development as a painter that could not have happened with the help of Juliette Aristides and Gage.” S-21 S-18 VALENCIA CARROLL MANDY THEIS HALLENIUS Spiny Murex Poppies Oil, 11.25 x 13.25 Oil on linen, 12 x 14 in. Although the background is painted a much darker color, I wanted it to appear as if light existed there as well. When light shines on the surface in a certain way, the entire painting appears to have an overall radiance. I draw the sitter straight on and objectively, stripped of any narrative content. The figures exist in confined spaces, lit from above, which maximizes the sense of intensity and reality. I want the viewer to have the sensation of encountering a real person.” Ms. Baker’s work is informed by memory, magic, and myth; utilizing an intentionally feminine hand, she makes these often imperceptible ideas tangible. The title of the piece represents the intense gaze the model had; piercing and slightly judgmental. I experimented with and exaggerated the colors to correctly capture the mood of her intensity.” 33 “‘Burst’ was painted in spring 2015. The complexity of the composition emphasizes the underlying power of these tiny flowers to end the monotony of long winter days. Their largerthan-life personality impelled to me to paint them larger than life. In the beginning I focus on observational work and psychological engagement with the subject, I use photos as references and I portrait that specific person. But it gets to a point where the piece vibrates on its own. Realism is surpassed to start materializing what is invisible for our eyes. I juxtapose methodical observational work and more spontaneous, improvised assembling of objects that intent to embody emotion, to represent a mental image of a feeling.” 35 “It is my goal to create paintings that celebrate the beauty displayed in our natural surroundings. I am particularly interested in the interface between urban, rural, and wild in this era of rapid environmental change.” “My way of connecting art and the rest of the world is by making handmade, one-of-a-kind ‘action figures.’ The Art Army tells stories about how the body of an artist is consumed by their work. This figure of James Turell is carved by the forms represented in his art. Geometric hollows and natural shafts of light pierce his body. His cowboy hat is removable to reveal a secret mind of golden minimalism. I love living someplace beautiful, but as a photographer, I don’t usually focus my camera on the picturesque. This is why, though my favorite time to live on the Island is summer and fall, my favorite time to take photographs is often winter. There is a severe beauty on the Island made more so with the strong, directional winter light that comes from a sun that never rises very high, if it ever really even appears.
