SUMMER 2012
Greetings from the Head of School
Message from the BSAA
It’s hard to believe that another school year has ended. On June 12, we had a lovely
graduation ceremony, and were honored to have Lauren Belfer ’71 return to her
hometown to give the commencement address. Now, nearly a month later, Summer
at Sem is in full swing, and the halls and classrooms are filled with the laughter of
middle-school girls enjoying their time here as campers.
Looking ahead to September and the start of a new academic year, I am excited to
announce some important changes to my administrative team. Assistant Head of
School Helen Marlette has been named Sem’s first Director of External Relations, a
position that underscores a commitment to increasing collaborations with our Buffalo
neighbors as well as within the wider community. Math teacher Rebecca Farwell has
taken on the role of Dean of Students, and Moira Giammaresi ’05, who worked under
Carrie Auwarter ’96, has stepped into the role of Director of Admissions.
The chance to congratulate these individuals allows me also to thank Carrie
Auwarter, who had been an integral part of the Sem team for the past nine years.
Earlier this spring, she made the difficult decision to leave her position as Director of
Admissions to begin a new chapter in her career at the University at Buffalo’s School
of Management. Carrie’s love for her alma mater and her dedication to excellence in
her work set a high standard for all of us. We continue to be inspired by that example,
and although she is missed greatly, we wish her the best.
Transitions can be both exciting and daunting. As Head of School, I am deeply
grateful to have such a committed staff, caring faculty and dedicated volunteers
working together for a place we all love.
Enjoy the rest of these beautiful summer days, and see you soon!
Best wishes,
Each spring the Buffalo Seminary Alumnae Association
Board of Directors has the distinct pleasure of hosting a
luncheon honoring Sem’s seniors. The Senior Induction
Luncheon, which is a relatively recent tradition, is one of our
favorites and gives us an opportunity to meet the soon-to-be
graduates and officially welcome them into the Association.
We also invite each of them to say a few words about her
experience at Sem and what it has meant to her.
Here are a few of their comments:
Our New Alumna Trustee
My experience at Sem has been eye-opening. I’ve learned what it
means to be a leader.
Buffalo Seminary helped me find myself.
Sem was a growing experience. It turned me into an independent
woman.
Sem helped me to achieve things I would not have tried somewhere else.
I am very proud of what I have accomplished.
This experience has been filled with exciting moments…and
memorable lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
Listening to each of them reaffirmed for me how lucky we
are to have graduated from such a wonderful school as Sem.
The City of Buffalo is also fortunate to have such an excellent
single-gender institution dedicated to preparing young
women for the future.
Congratulations, graduates! Enjoy the summer!
Gabrielle P. DeRose ‘74
President, Board of Directors
Buffalo Seminary Alumnae Association
Congratulations to Mary Ross Rice, Class of 1952, who has been named our new
Alumna Trustee for Sem’s Board of Trustees effective July 1, 2012. Mary succeeds
Ellie Harder Johnson, Class of 1957. We thank everyone who voted!

Celebrating the Class of 2012
On June 12, we held our 161st Commencement. Author Lauren Belfer ’71 gave the commencement address, and English teacher Carey Miller
delivered the closing remarks. Art teacher Kate Simonds was honored with The Betty Butzer Brown ’44 Humanities Chair, and Kevin O’Leary,
2009-2011 Board Chair, was presented with The Paul J. Koessler Community Service Award.
“So when I look at you, the class of 2012, sitting
where I sat 41 years ago, the most important
thing I can think of to say to you is, Don’t give up.
Sometimes the line to reach your dreams will be a
straight line, but more often, it will be a line that
tacks like a sail boat.” ~ from the commencement
address by Lauren Belfer
“This is it: you’re writing your very own Bildungsroman, in which
you cast yourself as the hero. When crossing the threshold of those
doors, just as you have departed from Sem’s great wooden doors
for the last time as students, it’s finally time to make some big
choices. What quest have you given yourself? What quest will
you give yourself?” ~ from closing remarks by Carey Miller

CLASS OF 1903
Margaret L. Wendt: From an announcement from the Preservation League of
New York: “The Preservation League of
New York State brought its Pillar of New
York Award celebration to Buffalo in June,
honoring the legacy of the late Margaret
L. Wendt, her many contributions to her
beloved city of Buffalo and the trustees of
the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation, who
have assisted in advancing her legacy.”
CLASS OF 1940
Louise Blakeslee Rich: “I had a serious
automobile accident in November 2011,
complete with a broken neck, but I am
recovering thanks to kind thoughts and
prayers.”
CLASS OF 1941
Elizabeth Underwood Mosley: “Sorry to
have missed our reunion. Keith and I are
enjoying these years – a gift – living still
in our home, seeing family and friends,
enjoying our Quaker world.”
CLASS OF 1944
Joanne Bozer Rehmus: “I still go down
to Florida for the winter. I still go out to
California twice a year to visit my two
daughters and five grandchildren. The
grandchildren are all in college now. My
one granddaughter is in her second year at
West Point. My two great-granddaughters
are five and three and live in Bay City – as
does my son.”
Patricia Maxwell Sweeney: “Next year
will be 30 years in Tucson with lots of
sunshine. I couldn’t be without it. I have
five children, seven grandchildren and four
lovely, young great-grandchildren.”
CLASS OF 1945
Mary Moot Buerger: “All is well here. Living close to an excellent liberal arts college
is a wonderful experience. As a very traditional liberal arts place, Hillsdale gets the
very best of young adults from supportive
and traditionally based homes. I have
found the students polite and outgoing.”
CLASS OF 1946
Joan Metzger Brisbin: “2011 – a good
year: third great-grandchild, granddaughter’s high school grad, summer in Maryland near daughter and family, and lots
of tennis, especially in Florida. What an
honor to represent my country with a special trip to Turkey in October as a member
of USTA Doris Hart Cup team. Best of all:
Good health for both Lany and me!”
CLASS OF 1948
Wendy Read Wells: “As an ‘outlander’
from Orchard Park, I often spent the night

at the home of one friend or another. I
loved being with Corky [Cora Dickinson
Becker ‘48] and her parents (her sisters
were somewhat older), especially the evening in August when, with her neighbors
The Hughes boys, we joined the exuberant crowds on Main Street downtown to
celebrate V-J Day – in conga lines!”

Last but not least, she and Bob Skerker
were named Citizens of the Year by The

Beverley Cryer Brewer: “Hi, everyone.
I have had an eventful few months,
decided to really retire, and have closed
the business. Sending off my super-salesperson granddaughter to join a like firm in
San Francisco. Reason to travel! Am enjoying the lake house more and just returned
from visiting my mother in Delray Beach,
FL. It was mother’s 94th birthday. I took
one of my 10-year-old granddaughters
with me, and we had a wonderful time
together.
I was happy to receive the Sem postcard
announcing some of the events taking
place at Sem in the next few months.
What a great offering to the students,
the alums and the community! Wish I
was there to take part. Surely a good sign
of Sem’s proactive position and excellence
in education.
Those of you in the Buffalo area must be
proud to recognize these events and take
time to enjoy what you can. Knowing
how important it is to keep the school
on such a high plane, I can’t help but be
a spokesperson to remind everyone that
it takes money to do these things. Our
annual giving is so important. It’s time for
another year – get out those checkbooks or
go online and make a donation! Thanks to
all of you for your generosity.
Stay well and happy! Love to all, Beverley”
CLASS OF 1961
Gail Donaldson: Gail’s mother, Athena
Donaldson, died on February 22, 2012.
In giving a gift to Seminary in memory
of her mother, Gail wrote, “Athena was
not a Sem graduate, but she loved Sem
and attended Alumnae Association events
with her Sem graduate friends, especially
the bridge group. She sent two daughters
to Sem and was very happy and proud of
the results.”
Patricia Liesinger Guinn: “On September
10, 2011, our son Matthew was married
to Rebekah Gayley in Kane, Pennsylvania.
They live in Havre de Grace, Maryland.
I continue to serve the Episcopal Diocese,
most recently at Saint Matthew’s.”
CLASS OF 1962
Wendy Williams McKay: On June 11,
2012, Janie Constantine and Carolyn
Clark received the following email: “Hats
off to you both for a wonderful actionpacked reunion. The reviews would put
Broadway to shame as everyone had a ball.
I think by this age we are all finally comfortable in our own skin and thus seeing
everyone again goes a lot smoother. I was
so thrilled that we won the Oshei Cup.”
Mary Ellen Lowe Tompkins: “Our 50th
is in the 50th year of my dad, Harold
C. Lowe, Esq., being Head of the Board
of Trustees. Look at our diplomas – he
signed them!! We are certainly a Sem
Family.”
Christina Sprague: “In April we went to
visit our son, a junior at the University of
Rochester, who is spending his winter/
spring semester in Amman, Jordan, living
with a family and working on his Arabic.
Our daughter, Alex, joined us from
Portland, OR, for a trip of a lifetime. We
floated in the Dead Sea, while looking over
at Jerusalem and Jericho; we toured and
hiked around Wadi Rum (made famous
by Peter O’Toole in Lawrence of Arabia)
and Petra. On our way home, Roger and
I stopped in Istanbul for an incredible five
days, awestruck by the Ottoman Sultans
and the Empire. I couldn’t help but think
of Jean Henrich when we visited Hagia
Sophia and the Blue Mosque, remembering them from her Art History class. She
was with me in spirit!”
CLASS OF 1973
Lucy Butterbaugh Coburn: “Greetings,
fellow Seminarians! So glad to be back in
Buffalo. The last six years have zoomed
by. Currently serving on the BSAA
(alumnae) board, which has been enjoyable. Working at the Canadian Consulate
managing seven homes in the Buffalo area
for diplomats assigned to Buffalo. Enjoying
skiing again and all that Buffalo has to offer. Don’t forget to look me up if you come
to town!”
Marjorie Burt MacElroy: “Life is busy.
My oldest daughter, Melissa, is living in
San Francisco. Kelsey will be graduating from Union and will be working as a
paralegal with an international law firm in
New York City. Donald is a freshman in
high school. I am still at The Albany Times
Union. Donald and I just celebrated our
26th wedding anniversary.”

September after 33 years of teaching and
am enjoying my new lifestyle completely!”

Schaefer Horvath, has been appointed
to a three-year term on Sem’s Board of

Fredonia State College is being recommended as the school’s next president.
Virginia Schaefer Horvath – an Amherst
native serving as vice president of academic
affairs at Fredonia – was tapped for the top
job by State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher after a six-month

in the college’s 186-year history.

Cathy Anderson Estes: On June 11, 2012,
Cathy shared the following in an email to
the Development Office: “I just found out
I won the PAEMST (Presidential Award

Teaching). This is the highest award a
mathematics teacher can earn. I really believe had I not attended Sem, I would not
have gone into mathematics. I was allowed
the opportunity to go into an area I loved

update you all about what sort of flim
flammery I’ve been up to. I’ve been living
in Vermont for eight years and am one
year away from a Master’s in social work,
and have been focusing on incarcerated
populations and social justice. I’m also
captain of my roller derby team, the Black
Ice Brawlers, and have been MVP three
times this year! I think Sem needs a jr.
derby league! I promise I’ll visit soon.”
