The Mirna River
Der Fluss Mirna
This décor in the scenery gives the
Istrian landscape certain tranquility, hiding the secret of the role
and power it had in the past.
Mirna is the longest Istrian river
(32 kilometers); its source is in the
area of Buzet, in the Kotli Valley.
Traveling towards the sea it passes
the Buzet and Motovun Valleys,
under the bridge Ponte Porton
until its mouth, near Antenal. Its
entire course is enriched with
tributaries on both sides. The first
mention of the river is tied to the
nice legend about the Argonauts,
Greek seamen who in 1200 Bc
captured the Golden Fleece on
the shores of the Black Sea in
Asia Minor, and traveled along
rivers and underground waters
to the Mirna River and settled on
the slopes. This is, however, only
one of the legends that brought
Istria a patina of unreality. The
rich and vivacious life on the

Mirna River depended on its
depth, and other circumstances
as well, that with the course of
time, caused all activities to come
to a standstill. Already in the 15
th c. Venice began to deepen
the river beds and cleanse the
lateral canals in order to maintain
and increase the depth. AustriaHungary later built a dam at
the mouth and built the road to
Poreč, while Italy constructed the
bridge near Antenal by the time
of World War II. Simultaneously
the narrow gauge “wine” railroad
Parenzana was constructed. Upon
its completion, the ports on the
Mirna River no longer existed. All
that remains of them nowadays
are but a few stone blocks. After the decline of the ports and
due to frequent illnesses, the
population moved to the higher
areas along the river. The banks
of the central and lower course
of the river are homes to just a
few families.

Der Fluss Mirna ist der längste
istrische Fluss (32 Kilometer);
die Quelle entspringt bei Buzet
im Tal Kotli. Auf seinem Lauf
zum Meer fließt er durch das Tal
von Buzet und Motovun unter
der Brücke Ponte Porton bis zur
Mündung ins Meer bei Antenal.
Während seines Laufes wird die
Mirna von beiden Seiten durch
Zuflüsse gespeist. Die erste Erwähnung stand in Verbindung mit
der sympathischen Legende über
die Argonauten, die griechischen
Seefahrer, die im Jahr 1200 vor
Christus an der Schwarzmeerküste Kleinasiens das Goldene Vlies
stahlen und auf Meeren, Flüssen
und unterirdischen Gewässern
bis zur Mirna gelangten und sich
an den Abhängen des Tales niederließen. Das ist nur eine der
Legenden, die Istrien die Patina
des Unwirklichen verleiht.
Das reiche und lebendige Leben am Fluss Mirna hing vom
Wasserstand, auch von anderen
umständen ab, die mit der Zeit
zu seinem Niedergang beitrug.
Schon Venedig begann im 15.
Jahrhundert das Flussbett zu vertiefen und die seitlichen Zuflüsse
zu reinigen, damit der Wasserstand erhalten wurde und
steigen konnte. Später errichtete
Österreich-Ungarn einen Damm
an der Mündung und ließ die
Straße bis Poreč bauen. Italien ließ
vor dem 2. Weltkrieg die Brücke
bei Antenal errichten. Gleichzeitig
wurde auch die schmalspurige
„Weinbahn“, die sog. Parenzana,
gebaut. Nach ihrer Fertigstellung
verschwanden die Flusshäfen
an der Mirna. Nur einige vereinzelte Steinblöcke deuten noch
auf sie hin. Nach dem Verfall
der Häfen und der Krankheiten
der Menschen, siedelte sich die
Bevölkerung auf den Erhebungen
entlang des Flusses an. Im mittleren und unteren Flusslauf leben
heute nur noch einige Familien.
Livade This town along the Mirna
River developed some one hundred
years ago, mostly owing to the Parenzana railroad. Livade was at the time
the traffic and commercial center for
wine, olive oil and other agricultural
produce. When the white truffle was
discovered in the Mirna Valley, Livade
became the collection and distribution
center of this valuable mushroom.
Today, it is known for its numerous
events and experiences linked to the
story of the truffle.
Dieser Ort am Fluss Mirna entwickelte
sich vor ungefähr hundert Jahren dank
der Eisenbahn Parenzana. In dieser
Zeit war Livade ein Verkehrs- und
Handelszentrum für Wein, Olivenöl und
andere landwirtschaftliche Produkte.
Damals wurde im Mirnatal die weiße
Trüffel entdeckt. So wurde Livade
auch ein Zentrum des Sammelns und
des Verkaufs dieses wertvollen Pilzes.
Heute ist es ein bekanntes Zentrum,
wo verschiedene Veranstaltungen und
Ereignissestattfinden, die mit der Geschichte der Trüffel verbunden sind

The S/S Hans Schmidt
- on the bottom of the
Adriatic Sea Deep in the
waters southwest of Pula lies the
wreck of the Hans Schmidt, a
German cargo steamship. What
little we know of the ship is that
she was built in 1920 and sank
in 1943 after either hitting an
underwater mine or being hit by
a bomb dropped from a plane.
The ship was originally named
the Albireo but when Heinrich
Schmidt from Flensburg bought
her he renamed her. The wreck
was discovered only recently
and it was the Italian underwater
explorer Mario Arena who confirmed that it is the S/S cargo
ship Hans Schmidt. The ship lies
vertically on the seabed and is of
historical importance because of
her special anchor that has not
been manufactured for more
than 100 years. The steel hull of
the steam ship is mostly intact
with the exception of the stern
which was torn away from the
rest of the ship by the explosion.

The devastating explosion took
place by the fore cargo storage
rooms after which the 112 m
cargo ship probably sank within
a few minutes. On the stern we
can see the anchor capstan and
the mooring bollards. The foremast
has broken off and lies alongside
the ship’s hull, while the aft
mast lies on the ship’s deck. Not
much of the overhead structure
is preserved. Perhaps the wreck
had been considered a danger
for navigation and therefore the
ship’s highest parts (mast, funnel
and commanding bridge) were
intentionally lowered with subsequent explosions. The roof of
the engine-room is visible, along
with its portholes and some other
minor structures. The aft cargo
spaces are empty while under the
stern we see the ship’s rudder
and propeller half buried in sand.
The wreck of this large, mystery
ship can be found on the open sea
where visibility at seafloor level is
poor. Therefore it is essential to
take all necessary precautions and
be well prepared for diving, while
at the same time complying with
all safety regulations. Unauthorised removal of any artefacts
from the seabed is prohibited.
Trustworthy instructors will
take care of all matters and,
under their guidance, diving is
safe and conducted according
to regulations. Your visit to the
Adriatic seafloor will prove to be
a lasting memory.

Dampfschiff auf dem
Meeresgrund der Adria In den Tiefen des Meeres,
südwestlich von Pula liegt das
Wrack des deutschen Handelsdampfschiffes Hans Schmidt, über
das nur wenig bekannt ist - bekannt ist, dass es im Jahr 1920
gebaut wurde und 1943 auf eine
Unterwassermine traf und infolge
eines Luftangriffes versenkt wurde. Das Frachtschiff trug zunächst
den Namen “Albireo“, ehe es
nach dem späteren deutschen
Besitzer Hans Schmidt aus Flensburg benannt wurde. Das Wrack
wurde erst vor kurzem
entdeckt. Dass es sich
um das Frachtschiff
Hans Schmidt handelt,
fand der italienische
Unterwasserforscher
Mario Arena heraus.
Das Schiff liegt in
aufrechter Position
am Meeresgrund und
ist, aufgrund des besonderen Ankertyps,
welcher seit mehr als
100 Jahren nicht mehr
hergestellt wird von
historischer Bedeutung. Der Stahlrumpf
des Dampfschiffs ist
weitgehend intakt geblieben, mit Ausnahme des Bugs, der durch die starke
Explosion vom Rest des Schiffs abgetrennt wurde.
Die Explosion ereignete sich in Höhe des vorderen
Frachtraums, so dass das 112 Meter lange Frachtschiff
wahrscheinlich in nur wenigen Minuten gesunken
ist. Am Bug sind Ankerwinden und Klemmen zum
Anbinden zu sehen. Der Vormast wurde zerstört und
liegt neben dem Schiff, wobei sich der Hintermast an
Deck befindet. Es ist nur wenig vom Mittelbau erhalten
geblieben - es kann sein, dass das Wrack eine Gefahr
für Seefahrt darstellte und daher ihre höchsten Teile
(die Masten, der Schiffsschornstein, die Brücke) durch
anschließende Sprennung verkleinert wurden. Sichtbar
ist das Dach des Maschinenraums mit seinen runden
Fenstern, sowie ein paar andere, kleinere Bullaugen. Die
Frachträume am Heck sind leer und unterm Heck kann
man das Schiffsruder, sowie die Schiffsschraube, die bis
zur Hälfte im Sand vergraben ist, sehen. Da sich das
Wrack dieses großen, mysteriösen Schiffs im offenen
Meer und in einer Gegend mit schlechterer Sicht auf
den Meeresgrund befindet, ist Vorsicht geboten. Das
Wracktauchen erfordert eine gute Vorbereitung und
sollte nur unter Einhaltung aller Sicherheitsbestimmungen durchgeführt werden. Die unbefugte Mitnahme
von Gegenständen vom Meeresboden an die
Meeresoberfläche ist verboten. In Begleitung
von erfahrenen Tauchlehrern, wird das Tauchen
sicher und gemäß der Vorschriften durchgeführt,
so dass die Reise in die faszinierende Unterwasserwelt
bestimmt ein unvergessliches Erlebnis wird.

100 Years of the Baron Gautsch
100 Jahre Baron Gautsch
Rovinj, 12. - 14.08.
Among the most famous wrecks of the
northern Adriatic is undoubtedly the passenger ship Baron Gautsch. Built in 1908,
this Austrian passenger ship sank after
hitting a mine on August 13, 1914. It was
carrying the families of Austrian officers
on the Boka Kotorska - Mali Lošinj - Trieste
route. On the occasion of this anniversary,
a memorial dive and the lowering of chaplets is organised in honour of the victims
of the worst sea tragedy to take place in
the Adriatic area during the First World War.
Das österreichische Passagierschiff, erbaut 1908, ist im Jahre 1914 gesunken, als
es auf eine Miene stieß. Es beförderte Familienmitglieder österreichischer Offiziere
auf der Route Boka Kotorska - Mali Lošinj
- Triest. Anlässlich des Jahrestages des
Untergangs, am 13. August, wird ein Memorialtauchen und das Niederlegen von
Kränzen zu Ehren den Opfern der größten
Seefahrtstragödie des Ersten Weltkriegs
an der Adria organisiert.

After departing from Trieste and driving for only
7.8 km you will come to Slovenia and then you
will have to cover precisely another 32 km before you reach the Croatian border at Požane. At
this point you will come to the entrance of our
Istrian trail of the 14th stage of the 87th edition
of the Giro d’Italia bike race. The first Croatian
city you can visit along the trail is Buzet, known
also as ‘The City of Truffles’. Buzet will fascinate
you with its beautiful medieval city centre situated on the top of the hill which rises in the
fertile valley of the longest Istrian river Mirna. If,
by chance, you are here during the months of
September and October do not miss ‘The Days
of Truffles’ when the divine fragrance of this culinary black gold spreads all over the surrounding places. After this regal refreshment you will
have to cover, according to many participants,
the most difficult part of the stage which begins
- 15 km uphill to Kovačići and ends in Svi Sveti.
Afterwards you can again go downhill towards
Cerovlje where you can visit the church of the
Holy Trinity constructed in the 15th century and
enjoy its astonishing frescoes. Continuing along
the trail in this beautiful area of untouched nature sprinkled with impressive remains of ancient medieval citadels located on top of the
hills you will reach Pazin - the heart of Istria.
Walk along the streets of Pazin to its medieval
citadel Kaštel (today an ethnographic museum)
located above a 130 m deep abyss where the
river Pazinčica flows into the Pazin pit. Find out
why was Jules Verne so enchanted by this scenery and chose it as a setting for a part of his
novel ‘Mathias Sandorf’ published in 1885. Following the trail which leads from Pazin to Poreč
you will reach Tinjan. At the top of the hill in the
centre of Tinjan there is a magnificent view of
Draga, a valley which extends from Beram to
the Lim Fjord. Have a sit at the ‘Prefect’s table’,
a stone table in the main square where meetings of the city council were held in the past. If
you meet someone at the table ask him to tell
you the story of the flea that elected the head
of the village. Continue to Baderna after which
follows the second demanding trail of the 14th

with the church of St Blaise you

arrival in Pula is Fažana, a small
fishermen’s village situated in
front of the enchanting Brijuni archipelago in ancient times famous
for the production of amphorae
and for the processing of olives
and grapes. Continuing along the
road from Fažana you will finally
arrive in Pula. Like Rome, the city
lies on 7 hills and proudly boasts a
magnificent Amphitheatre greeting you already from the waterfront. Welcome to the end of the

Bereits 7,8 km nach dem Start
in Triest, führt der Weg in unser
Nachbarland Slowenien und nach
exakt 32 Kilometern öffnet der
Grenzübergang Pozane das Tor
nach Kroatien/Istrien. Hier befinden Sie sich an der Schwelle des
istrischen Streckenabschnitts der
14. Etappe des Giro d‘Italia. Die
erste istrische Stadt, die Sie besuchen, ist Buzet. Weithin bekannt
als “Stadt der Trüffel“, bezaubert
die Stadt am Berg auch durch
seinen mittelalterlichen Altstadtkern, hoch über dem fruchtbaren Tal des größten istrischen
Flusses Mirna. Wer sich in den
Monaten Oktober oder November hier aufhält, kann die “Tage
der Trüffel“ erleben, an denen
der Duft ‚edlen FeinschmeckerKnolle’ (Weiße Trüffel) überall in
der Luft liegt und sich bis zu den

Tinjan
im Kirchlein der Hl. Dreifaltigkeit
aus dem 15. Jhdt. wunderschöne
Fresken entdecken. Weiter geht
es durch unberührte Natur, auf
deren Hügelkuppen die Überreste
mittelalterlicher Kastelle thronen,
bis in das Herz Istriens, die Stadt
Pazin. Ein Bummel durch die Straßen von Pazin führt zur mittelalterlichen Festung, die hoch über
einem 130 Meter tiefen Abgrund
thront (im Kastell kann das Ethnographische Museum Istriens
besichtigt werden). In der Tiefe
mündet der Fluss Pazinčica in die
Paziner Schlucht und bietet ein
sehenswertes Naturschauspiel.
Entdecken Sie den Grund, warum
Jules Verne davon so verzaubert
war, dass er die Schlucht 1885
zum Schauplatz seines Romans
“Mathias Sandorf“ machte. Wer
dem Weg von Pazin nach Poreč
folgt, erreicht Tinjan, von dessen

der früher Mittelpunkt bedeutender Entscheidungen war. Und
wenn Sie bei dem Tisch jemanden antreffen, fragen Sie ihn nach
der Geschichte über den Floh,
der den Vorsteher wählt. Es geht
weiter in Richtung Baderna, und
nach einiger Zeit erwartet Sie der
zweite anspruchsvolle Teil der 14.
Etappe mit einem 2,5 km langen
Anstieg beim Limfjord. Genießen
Sie hier den herrlichen Ausblick.
Die Weiterfahrt führt nach Rovinj,
das kleine Venedig der östlichen
Adria, ein typisch mediterranes
Städtchen. Während man durch
die engen mittelalterlichen Gassen
zur Hl. Euphemia auf den Gipfel pilgert, erliegt man nur zu gerne dem
Charme dieses einmaligen Ortes.
Auf der Fahrt Richtung Pula fahren Sie durch Bale; wo das Kastell
Bembo besichtigt werden kann.
Weiter geht’s nach Vodnjan, einem
von Palästen aus Gotik, Renaissance und Barock geprägten Ort,
mit der Kirche des Hl. Blasius, die
das weltberühmte Phänomen der
Mumien von Vodnjan (mumifizierte Körper von Heiligen) birgt. Die
letzte Station vor dem Ziel in Pula
ist Fažana, ein kleiner Fischerort,
gegenüber dem Inselarchipel Brioni. In der Antike war Fažana für
die Herstellung von Amphoren bekannt und neben dem Fischen von

Buzet
In prehistoric times the hill-fort, from
which the town later developed, watched over the
road along the Mirna Valley. The settlement Piquentum derives its name from the semi-Romanized
community of Illyrian-Celtic origin that populated
these areas in Roman times. In perilous times of
Late Antiquity and beginning of the Middle Ages
the inhabitants left the lowland settlements and
withdrew to the well-protected areas. In addition
to the barbarized Romanic population, from the beginning of the 7th c. the surroundings of the town
were also settled by the Slavs. Throughout the
Middle Ages Buzet shared the destiny of northern
Istria by changing rulers: Frankish kings, German
feudal lords, Patriarch of Aquileia (1102 - 1421), the
Republic of Venice (1421 - 1789). On the hilltops
overlooking the Mirna River and slopes of Ćićarija
a number of small towns emerged (Rašpor, Vrh,
Sovinjak, Draguć, Roč, Hum). The limited living area
surrounded by walls and dominant position of castle
defined their urban development. At that time the
urban foundations of Buzet were also laid, the town
spread along the ridge. From the western entrance
towards the east, where the Church of St. George,
patron saint of Buzet stood on a cliff within the town
walls, stretched parallel streets with rows of houses.
After taking control of Aquileian possessions Venice

joined the towns of northern Istria into a defensive
fortification system of the Rašpor Captaincy. By
moving the seat of the Rašpor Captaincy to Buzet in
1511, later also the administration of the continental
part of Venetian possessions in Istria, and especially
after the armed conflicts settled down in the second half of the 17th c., the town began to flourish. In
spite of the medieval layout, a large number of palaces and houses leave an impression of a Renaissance and Baroque town. Venetian captains, whose

In der Urgeschichte wurdeder Weg durch das Tal
des Flusses Mirna von einer Gradina beherrscht, an
Stelle der später dort errichteten Stadt. Die Siedlung
Piquentum verdankt ihren Namen der Gemeinschaft
der halbromanisierten Bewohner illyrisch keltischen
Ursprungs, die hier während der Römerzeit lebten.
In den unsicheren Zeiten der Spätantike und zu
Beginn des Mittelalters gab diese Bevölkerung ihre
Talsiedlungen auf und zog sich auf gut geschützte
Orte zurück. Neben der sog. barbarischen romanischen Bevölkerung, wurde die Umgebung der Stadt
seit Beginn des 7. Jahrhunderts von Slawen besiedelt. Während des Mittelalters folgte Buzet dem
Schicksal Nordistriens, indem sich die Herrscher
abwechselten: fränkische Könige, deutsche Feudalherren, die Patriarchen von Aquileia (1102 - 1421),
die Serenissima der Republik Venedig (1421 - 1789).
Auf den Gipfeln der Hügel entlang des Flusses Mirna
und an den Abhängen der Ćićarija entstanden eine
Reihe kleiner Städte (Rašpor, Vrh, Sovinjak, Draguć,
Roč, Hum). Der beschränkte von Mauern umfasste
Lebensraum und die dominante Lage des Kastells
bedingten ihre städtische Entwicklung. Aus dieser
Zeit stammt auch die städtische Grundlage Buzets.
Die Stadt erstreckte sich vom Gipfel des Hügels talwärts. Vom Eingang an der Westseite Richtung Osten, wo sich auf Felsen innerhalb der städtischen
Mauern die Kirche des Stadtpatrons des Hl. Georg
erhob, gab es parallel geführte Straßen, entlang der
sich Häuser aneinander reihten. Nach der Eroberung der Besitztümer Aquileias verband Venedig die
Städte des nördlichen Istriens zu einem Abwehrsystem unter dem Kapätanats von Raspor. Durch die
Verlegung des Sitzes des Kapitäns nach Buzet im
Jahr 1511 und später auch der Verwaltung des kontinentalen Teils venezianischer Besitzungen in Istrien,
wie vor allem nach der Beruhigung der militärischen
Auseinandersetzungen in der zweiten Hälfte des 17.
Jahrhunderts, erlebt die Stadt eine Blüte. Trotz der
mittelalterlichen Grundlage vermittelt die große Zahl
von Palästen und Häusern den Eindruck einer Renaissance- und Barockstadt. Die Kapitäne von Venedig, deren Wappen auch heute zahlreiche städtische
Denkmäler verzieren, veranlassten umfassende Eingriffe. Sie ließen die städtischen Mauern mit dem
großen Tor (1547) und dem kleinen Tor (1592) rekonstruieren und ließen die kleine Zisterne (1517 -1522
und 1568) bauen und den Kornspeicher errichten.

Dvigrad, 26.08./16.09.
Dvigrad was mentioned for the first time in 879,
when two castles became the property of the Patriarchate of Aquileia. The bishopric of Poreč governed
the castles in the 10th century, thus one castle was
named after its owner - Castle Parentino. Dvigrad
was given to the estate of the Counts of Gorizia at
the end of the 13th century. However, the Genoese
army, which was in war with Venice, demolished
the castles in 1354. Many people died and many
towns were abandoned during the war in Istria between 1377 and 1381. It is very likely that the castle
Parentino was deserted during that period and only
Moncastello was rebuilt, when the architectural inventory from the church of st. sophia was brought
to the nearby Dvigrad. The Venetian Republic finally
got hold of Dvigrad in 1413. Frequent clashes between Venice and Austria in the second half of the
16th century disturbed more than a century long
peace in Dvigrad. At the same time, the plague epidemic raged and an outbreak of malaria forced the
inhabitants to migrate to neighbouring Kanfanar in
1630. Only the poorest families stayed in Dvigrad.
The bishop Tommasini sanctified only three families
in Dvigrad in 1650 and the church of St. Sophia was
completely abandoned in 1714. The ravages of time
took their toll. Today’s remnants represent a wellpreserved typical medieval towncastle. Two rings of
walls onnected by the town gate surround the town.
The town has three town gates and three atchtow16
ers. The church of st. sophia, erected on the highest
point of the town in the early Christian period (5th
century), dominates today’s Dvigrad. Even though it
has romanesque features, it got its present magnificent three-nave appearance in the 13th century. The
town square adorned with the Municipal loggia is in
front of the Church. A military residential area was
in the western part, and an artisan area was in the
south-western part of the town. The remaining, large
part was for the houses of the locals, among whose
remnants we can climb up towards the square, the
church…
Dvigrad wird zum ersten Mal im Jahr 879 erwähnt, als die Verwaltung der beiden Burgen durch
das Patriarchat von Aquileia übernommen wurde.
Im 10. Jahrhundert befinden sie sich im Besitz der
Diözese Poreč, weshalb eine der beiden Burgen
auch nach den Besitzern benannt wurde - Castel
Parentino. Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts übernehmen
die Grafen von Görz die Stadt und im Jahr 1354 wird
Dvigrad, im Zuge von Ausernandersetzungen Venedigs mit Genua durch die Genuesen völlig zerstört.
Viele Menschen kamen ums Leben und viele Städte
wurden in diesem Krieg zerstört, der weitgehend in
Istrien in den Jahren von 1377 bis 1381 stattgefunden
hat. Nach diesem Krieg wurde das Castel Parentino
aufgegeben und nur die Burg Moncastello restauriert
und ein Teil des architektonischen Inventars der Kirche der hl. Sophia in das nahegelegene Städtchen
Dvigrad verlagert. Im Jahr 1413 übernimmt Venedig
schließlich die Verwaltung der Stadt. Nach mehr als
einem Jahrhundert des Friedens wurde die zweite
Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts durch den ständigen
Konflikt Venedigs und Österreichs geprägt. Zu dieser Zeit wütete die Pest und Malaria, so dass die
Bevölkerung, die Stadt im Jahr 1630 verlassen hat
und nach Kanfanar zog und nur die ärmsten Familien zurückgeblieben sind. Im Jahr 1650 wurden
nur drei Familien durch Bischof Tomasini in Dvigrad
gesegnet und im Jahr 1714 wurde auch die Kirche
der hl. Sophia verlassen. Die Stadt wurde aufgegeben und dem Zahn der Zeit überlassen. Die heutigen Überreste der einstmaligen Stadt Dvigrad sind
sehr gut erhalten und bieten ein einzigartiges Bild
einer typischen mittelalterliche Stadtburg. Sie sind
umgeben von Doppelmauern, die mit dem Stadttor
verbunden sind. Die Stadt besitzt drei Türen und
drei Verteidigungstürme. Über der Stadt dominiert
die Kirche der hl. Sophia, die sich auf dem höchsten
Punkt der Stadt befindet. An dieser Stelle steht sie
seit frühchristlichen Zeit (5. Jh. n. Chr.). Das Gebäude
im romanischen Stil erhielt seine heutige imposante
dreischiffige Form im 13. Jahrhundert. Davor befindet sich der Hauptplatz mit dem Stadtpalast. Im Westteil der Stadt befanden sich Räumlichkeiten eines
Militärlagers und im südwestlichen Teil befandet
sich Handwerksräume. Der restliche, recht große
Bereich war für die Häuser ganz normaler Bürger
bestimmt, zwischen deren zahlreichen Ruinen wir
bis zum Hauptplatz und zur Kirche hinaufsteigen...

Until the end of August, the most famous
summer cultural-artistic event is happening in Labin Old town, the 12. Labin Art
Republic will be hosting numerous music
stars, theatre shows, young artists’ art
colony, street performances, dance show,
stand- up comedians…This summer walk
around the Old town and meet the local
historical figures, such as the protestant
church reformer Matthias Flacius Illyricus,
a socialist Giuseppina Martinuzzi and a local mine worker. Three times a week in the
evening these historical figures dressed in
original costumes will walk around the medieval town and talk to guests in Croatian
and three foreign languages. They’ll show
you the way to Labin Public Museum, Town
Gallery or a current event part of Labin Art
Republic, give you flyers with important
information and programme booklets. Die
zweifellos populärste allsommerlichen Kultur- und Kunstmanifestation der Region
findet bis Ende August in der Altstadt von
Labin statt. Auf dem Programm sind Auftritte zahlreicher Musiker sowie Theatervorstellungen, Straßenperformances, Stand-up-Komiker-Abende und vieles mehr. Außerdem
werden auch dieses Jahr eine Kunstkolonie
der jungen Künstler sowie eine Tanzschau
abgehalten. Auf den Gassen der Altstadt
wird man diesen Sommer Labiner historische Persönlichkeiten antreffen können:
den protestantischen Reformator Matthias
Flacius Illyricus, die Sozialistin Giuseppina
Martinuzzi und den einfachen Labiner Bergmann. Dreimal wöchentlich werden diese
historischen Persönlichkeiten in authentischen Kostümen abends durch die engen
Gassen des alten Stadtkerns spazieren
und sich in kroatischer Sprache und drei
Fremdsprachen mit den Stadtbesuchern
unterhalten. Sie zeigen den Besuchern
gerne den Weg zum Volksmuseum und zur
Stadtgalerie, oder zu der gerade aktuellen
LAR-Veranstaltung und teilen Flugblätter
und Programmhefte aus.
This summer Brijuni National Park presents a new
cultural-historical program and memorable walking performance Kupelwieser on Brijuni that takes
you into the past. This is an interactive multilingual
staging and amazing true story about Paul Kupelwieser, the famous visionary who turned the malarial Brijuni Islands into a real Heaven on Earth,
the world famous tourist destination and health
resort. The acting troupe presenting élite society
leads the audience-visitors through the history of
the islands and evokes the culture and lifestyle of
the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The
program Kupelwieser on Brijuni will be performed
in August, every Wednesday at 8pm. This open-air
walking performance, lasting two and a half hours,
takes place at several attractive locations on Veliki
Brijun. The program includes the walking performance and guidance, toasting drink and pastry. The

eine zaubervolle wahre Geschichte über die Ankunft des berühmten Visionärs Paul Kupelwieser
auf Brijuni Archipel und deren Umwandlung in ein
echtes Paradies auf der Erde, ein weltweites touristisches und Kururlaubsziel. Die Schauspielergruppe
stellt eine elitäre Gesellschaft dar, führt das Publikum durch die Geschichte der Insel und zaubert
die Kultur und den Lebensstil vom Ende 19. und
Anfang 20. Jahrhunderts hervor. Das Programm
“Kupelwieser auf Brijuni“ wird im Juli und August
mittwochs um 20 Uhr aufgeführt. Die spaziergängerische Aufführung in Dauer von zwei und halb
Stunden wird im Freien, auf einigen sehr attraktiven
Stellen von Veliki Brijun, gespielt. Das Programm
umfasst die Schauspielerinszenierung und Führung,
ein Willkommensgetränk und Süßspeise. Der Preis

Umag The environs of Umag are teeming with
the remains of Roman villas. In the 9th century
Umag fell under Frankish rule and was destroyed
by the Croatian prince Domagoj. On the main
town square, alongside the monumental church
(1760) with its unfinished façade, we also see
the bell tower and the public waterworks from
the 17th century. In the Old Town we find many
Gothic houses, distyles and coats of arms, the
southern part of the fortress wall and the 14th
centurydefensive tower, which today houses
the town museum. Die Nähe von Umag wimmelt von Resten römischer Villen, die mehrere
Jahrhunderte aktiv entlang der Küste waren. Im
9. Jahrhundert wurde Umag unter Herrschaft der
Franken und wurde vom kroatischen Fürsten
Domagoj zerstört.Neben monumentaler Kirche
(1760) mit einer unvollendeten Fassade ist auf
dem Hauptplatz auch der Glockenturm sowie
das öffentliche Wasserschloss aus dem 17. Jh.
Die Altstadt bewahrt mehrere gotische Häuser,
Biforien, Wappen und die südliche Umgrenzung
von der Bastei aus dem 14. Jahrhundert, wo sich
heute das Stadtmuseum befindet.
Poreč, along with Pula, was the first Roman
colony in Istria. To this day it still preserves the
same street layout of the Old Town as in antiquity, as well as the ruins of its Roman temple.
The Euphrasian Basilica Complex is a UNESCO
World Heritage site, with its worldknown Byzantine mosaics and remains of an older Early
Christian church. The town centre consists of
a Romanesque house, severalGothic mansions,
and the Istrian Parliament Building, the seat of
the provincial assembly in the 19th century. The
town theatre was renovated in 2006.
Poreč war neben Pula die erste römische
Kolonie in Istrien. Bis heute ist die antike Straßenanordnung der Altstadt sowie die Überreste
der römischen Tempel erhalten. Die EuphrasiusBasilika mit ihren weltbekannten byzantinischen
Mosaiken aus der frühchristlichen Kirchenzeit
steht unter UNESCO-Schutz. Im Stadtkern steht
ein romanisches Haus, mehrere gotische Paläste
sowie das istrianische Abgeordnetenhaus, in welchem sich im 19. Jh. die Regierungsabgeordneten
befanden. Das städtische Theater wurde im Jahr
2006 renoviert.

Vrsar Giacomo Casanova, the great lover,
visited Vrsar in the 18th century. The town celebrates this event with a festival of love and
erotica. The historical centre consists of the
Church of St. Martin and of a restored castle.
The Romanesque Basilica of Mary of the Sea,
located on the edge of town, hosts summer
guitar concerts. The islands of Vrsar, the blue of
the sea and sky, and the old stone quarry have
all inspired the abstract expressionist painter
Edo Murtić. Outside the town we find the wellknown park of sculptures by Dušan Džamonja.
Vrsar

Park der Skulpturen von Dušan Džamonja.
Medulin is teeming with the spirit of antiquity. There is an archaeological forest park on
the Vižula Peninsula, where once a rich Roman
village and necropolis existed. Today, the play
Crispo is performed in the park. It was inspired
by the story of the first-born son of Emperor
Constantine the Great, who allegedly was incarcerated and murdered in a country villa in
Vižula. Stone blocks, necessary for building the
Pula Arena were hauled from the stone quarry
in nearby Vižula.
Medulin besitzt einen Hauch der Antike-ein
archäologischer Park-Wald, der auf der Halbinsel Vizula wächst, wo sich zuvor eine reiche
römische Wohnsiedlung und Nekropole befand.
Im Park werden heute Vorstellungen Crispos
gegeben, inspiriert von der Geschichte des erstgeborenen Sohnes des Konstantin des Großen,
welcher der Sage zufolge gefangen genommen
und in der Residenzvilla auf Vizul umgebracht
wurde. Aus dem Steinbruch bei Vinkuran wurden die Steinblöcke für den Bau der Arena zu
Pula gebracht.

Under the Venetian rule the Mirna
Der Fluss Mirna spielte unter
der Herrschaft Venedigs eine
wichtige Rolle, denn er wurde
als Transportweg für das Holz
aus der Ćićarija genutzt. Aus
diesem Holz wurden die Ruder
für die venezianischen Galeeren
gefertigt. Wie sehr das Holz als
Rohmaterial für Venedig wichtig
war, sagen uns die eingravierten
Inschrift unter dem Relief des
venezianischen Löwen, die den
Holzhandel reguliert und befindet
sich auf einem der Gebäude auf
dem Hauptplatz von Vižinada. Die
Kirche des hl. Barnabas befindet
sich im Ortszentrum. Sie bestand
ursprünglich aus einer Doppelapsis, jedoch wurden die Apsiden
in der Barockzeit zerstört und
das Kirchenschiff erhöht. Die
Fresken wurden rein zufällig
entdeckt, als die Kirche für den
Kriegsfilm Kelley’s Heroes mit
Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas
und Donald Sutherland als Requisitenlager diente. Das gängige
ikonographische Programm zeigt

town center. Originally it was a doubleapsed church, however in the Baroque
the apses were pulled down and the
church nave was raised. The frescoes
were discovered accidentally when the
church was used for storing props while
shooting the war film Kelley’s Heroes
with Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas and
Donald Sutherland. The commonplace
iconographic program of the Christological cycle depicts the following scenes:
the Nativity, Adoration of the Magi, Massacre of the Innocents, Dispute in the
Temple, Last Supper, Crucifixion and
Resurrection. In the left part of the west-

France, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium,
Denmark and even far away Australia.
Above all, the association promotes
respect for tradition while encouraging creativity and innovativeness in
young chefs under the motto “Talent &
Passion”. In the world of gastronomy,
being a JRE member is a step towards
obtaining the coveted Michelin stars.
To become a JRE member, a restaurant
must be listed in at least three international and national gourmet guides,
the restaurant owner should not be
younger than 23 or older than 37, and
foremost the restaurant must adhere to
and promote the JRE slogan “Talent &
Passion”. The association’s main vision
is to enable the exchange of experience
among top-class young chefs whose
innovativeness brings the public the
best foodstuffs of a particular region,

This is a gourmet festival that
brings together a total of ten
events, starting in late April and
lasting all the way to October.
Each of the individual events is
dedicated to one of the culinary
specialties of the region. The
culinary theme of late April or
early May is the wild asparagus,
in mid-May it is the pilchard or
oily fish in general, while the first
weekend in June, Gnam Gnam
Fest is dedicated to the Novigrad
scallop and other shellfish. July
and August on the other hand,
bring two editions of the festival
where visitors will be presented
with all the seafood of the Adriatic Sea: delicious and imaginative dishes based on shellfish,
molluscs, fish, while the two editions of the event in September
(13 and 20 September) will offer
the specialties of Istrian cuisine
that, besides seafood, include the
cuisine typical of the continental
part of Istria. This interesting gastronomic story will be concluded
in October (10 October) with
Mushroom Days, when the offer
includes the dishes made from
the ‘queen of the forest’. All of
the specialties will be presented
through a number of creative
menus at special prices, and

(07. 08.) bringen wiederum zwei
Festivalausgaben, bei denen
sich der Besucher auf ein umfassendes Angebot an Meeresfrüchten der Adria freuen kann
bzw. schmackhafte und phantasievolle Gerichte aus Muscheln,
Fisch und Mollusken. Die zwei
Septemberveranstaltungen (13.
und 20. 09.) bieten Spezialitäten
der istrischen See- und Landküchen mit sowohl mediterranen
als auch mitteleuropäischen
Einflüssen an. Abgeschlossen
wird diese gastronomische Geschichte im Oktober (19. 10.) mit
den “Tagen der Pilze“, wenn aus
dieser “Waldkönigin“ zubereitete Gerichte auf der Speisekarte
stehen. Das Ganze wird durch
diverse und verspielte Menüs zu
Sonderpreisen angeboten. Außerdem kann man dabei auch
ein reiches Verkostungsangebot
an Qualitätsweinen, Olivenölen,
Käse, Prosciutto, Teigwaren, Honig und anderen einheimischen
Produkten der Region genießen.
Während des GnamGnam-Festes
im August bereiten die Fischer
von Novigrad in unmittelbarer
Nähe des zentralen Veranstaltungsortes, auf der anderen Seite des Stadtteiles Mandrač, ein
Volksfest „nach einheimischer

Histria Aromatica is situated on a hill
near the village Golaš near Bale. It is a spacious
arboretum and a kind of theme park about indigenous, healing, aromatic and spicy Mediterranean
herbs. Beautiful fields of lavender, mint, chamomile,
marigold, sage, as well as the olive grove and
vineyard reminiscent of the old rural households
which are typical for Istrian region. Around the hills
and between the terraces the dry walls were built,
there are the renewed walking paths, as well as the
rest areas. There is a view from the top of the hill
towards the entire Rovinj and Vodnjan coastal area
and from the other side there is a view towards
Učka. The arboretum Histria Aromatica presents
the woods in Istria and meadows with its typical
trees, plants and animals. Don’t miss to take a walk
to the cave where you will find out more about
its specificity on a constant temperature of 12°C
throughout the year and find out that it’s an ideal

One of the largest in Istria, it is a true jewel of the
Istrian underground. The bravest, curious individuals
conquered fear and descended into it back in 1770,
when it was first mentioned. Die Grotte Mramornica

Juwel der istrischen Unterwelt. Besonders mutige und
neugierige Menschen überwanden ihre Angst und ließen
sich im Jahr 1770 in die Grotte hinunter, als sie zum

Feštini not far from Žminj. It was named kingdom by
children surprised by the miraculous space and forms
in which their imagination saw a magician’s hat, the

unweit von Žminj. Den Namen „Königreich“ bekam die
Grotte von Kindern, die vom magischen Raum und den
