Committee
I'm glad the weather stayed fine for those of
you who went along to the NEL BBQ last
week.
This was held on the Noggin 'n' Natter night
and, along with the June Pitch & Putt
evening, forms the summer interlude for the
regular Noggins.
After quite a long session at the
Wheelwrights, the committee have decided
it's time for a change and from August
onwards, future Noggins will now be held at
The Bulls Head, Turnford.
Full details and a map can be found further
on and as usual, if you could let John Foster
know whether you are coming, he can
reserve places at the table for you all.

Secretary’s Scrawlings
Hi all,
I’m typing this as I await the return of an Italian couple I had stay overnight a couple of weeks
ago… Up until they arrived the weather was its usual cool and often damp self as we’d had
for most of June, however these last 2 weeks have been glorious, maybe I should take their
passports so they have to stay on and that will keep the weather with us?
We had a small but select gathering at the BBQ the other night, 12 NEL members and 1½
guests, wine, beer, soft drinks, sausages, burgers & salad flowed well into the evening.
It cooled down a little towards the end but fortunately everyone had taken the precaution of
bringing something warm just in case. Now all I need to do is to put all the extra furniture
away as it’s a bit in the way on the patio.
I’ll not be able to make Mick & Margaret's Jigsaw Quiz in August as I’m off to see a live
screening of Richard III at the local cinema, I’ve become rather fond of this system of seeing
theatre as it gives TV like close-ups of the action, yet is still ‘Live’ theatre – plus of course
there’s no need to haul into London.
One up-coming event that certainly is worth making an effort for is the White Water Rafting.
We now have a full boat and a growing reserve list. It may even end up with a second boat if
enquiries keep coming in. Staff is handling that one, but don’t expect to receive an immediate
reply as he’s very busy at the moment. (either up a ladder with a paint brush, or being roped
into other things)
There’s an increasingly sinister threat of Cyber crime and, just lately, I’ve had two PCs in for
attempted repair that have been compromised by a rather nasty ‘Ransomware’ attack.
In one case the user didn’t know what initiated the problem, it just seemed to be very slow
starting one day, and was showing a plain black screen while the machine could be heard to
be accessing the hard disk.
I ran this one up on diagnostic and discovered the entire file and folder names had been
changed to what appears to be random characters.
My suspicion is that every time the machine is started, the encryption continues until all the
files are encrypted, and then the Ransom message will appear. I’d seen this once before a
few years ago where a business customer was targeted and the ransom demand was
$50,000 to be sent to some dodgy sounding account
In the second case, I’d been given the machine to look at after a suspicious ‘support call’ had
ended up with the machine being remotely accessed by the criminals.
So NEVER allow remote access to your PC by anyone unless you know them personally –
and trust them to do what you want them to do!
Remember ‘Windows Support’ calling about your computer sending errors is a scam.
Microsoft and Apple for that matter NEVER EVER call users spontaneously they just don’t
Cheers,
Ron
Club Night - Tuesday 9th August - JIGSAW QUIZ No. 7
Yes, it's that time of year again, when
Margaret and I run our Jigsaw Quiz
There are 3 new maps out of 6 this year,
all duly tested and approved by my
"social secretary"...!
Do come along and join in the fun.
There's no moving about as that is
done by the organisers or Ron, so it's
just a little bit of brain function
required.
As usual, there will be valuable prizes
for the top three.....see you there...

White Water Rafting, 13th August 2016
** Sorry - Now Fully Booked **
On Saturday 13th August North East
London Group are organising a White
Water Rafting session at the Lee
Valley White Water Centre, Waltham
Abbey. A Saturday has been chosen
so as to give those that work a chance
to have a go without taking a day off
work.
Each boat will take 9 people (with a
lower age limit of 14) and you’re given
a safety briefing and provided with a
wet suit, helmet and buoyancy aid before tackling the course (which is not the
Olympic course by the way – it is toned down for the general public). The cost
will be £50 which buys you three exhilarating runs down the white water.
Those interested in this adrenaline-producing day out should contact the
organiser Stafford Steed on [email protected]
or
01707
265839. Be warned, you will get wet! But in a very safety first environment.
Copped Hall visit - Sunday 21st August - 10.00am
Following the talk on Copped Hall in Upshire, by Phil
McKinder in February we have arranged a follow up visit
in August.
As a reminder, Phil is an official guide to the Copped Hall
Trust, who dispensed a wealth of information on the
estate which has Royal connections dating back to Tudor
times. The current building was built in 1753 and
destroyed by fire in 1917.
The Copped Hall Trust was formed in 1993 and the house along with 24 acres of garden,
saved for the purposes of education, culture and the community.
Cost of the visit will be £8.00, all of which will go to the Trust for its ongoing restoration
work. If we can assure a good number we should have sole guidance of the estate by Phil,
he may even be able convince the Trustees to bring out the family’s 1929 Rolls Royce
which they managed to find.
More information along with program of events can be found on their website
www.coppedhalltrust.org.uk
Those that are interested please provide names along with the sum of £8.00 per person to
me please. Staff Steed. Tel; 01707 265839
E.mail; [email protected]
Directions: Post code for Copped Hall is: CM16 5HS.
Access is via the main gate less than a mile to the East of Upshire, OS ref. 167/430005.
The chances are that the gate will be manned, just say that you are booked in for a guided
visit with Phil McKinder.
You will be guided along a straight access road, over the M25 to the hall. The car park is
on the left before the hall. The visit is timed for 10.00am, it is important that you arrive
early so that everyone can be booked in on time without wasting any time.
Our New Venue For Noggins Will Be at: ‘The Bulls Head’ Turnford.
From Tuesday 23rd August we will
be having our monthly noggins at
the above mentioned pub.
The address is: The Bulls Head,
Turnford High Road, Turnford,
EN10 6BZ.
This large McMullens pub has
several comfortable seating areas
and an extensive menu to choose
from.
Please let me know if you would like to join me on the 23 rd August, so I can
make the correct number of reservations. Meeting time is 7.30pm.
My e-mail address is: [email protected].
Thanks
John Foster.
Puzzle Page August 2016
The answer to last month was wickedly messy.
48.95238095 is the precise number –
I’ll accept 48.9 to 50 miles as correct
2 points each to our keen mathematicians:
Mike Biss, Mike Sumner, Barry Childs, Mick O’Blath
1 Point each for Brian Beard, John Foster who evidently went the
long way round.
This month’s puzzle:
Treasurer Staff has £12.48 in his money box and discovers while counting he has the
same number of coins in each of four denominations. What are they, and how many of
each are there?
A Codeword and a Sudoku
Answers to me by email, post or carrier pigeon before the 4th Tuesday f the month. As
usual 1 point for entering, 2 for a correct answer.
Please send emails to [email protected] with ‘PUZZLE’ in the Subject line so I can
find them.

Past Events
Grasshopper Autotest Unfortunately this event was also cancelled due to a sodden field.
Autotest Taster Event A very successful event saw our first grass autotest of the year to actually run and not be
cancelled due to a wet field. Several new drivers came along and had a great time and all said they will be back for
future events. The BBQ also went down well, so thanks to chef Alan Thurbon for the cooking.
Future Events
Chiltern Autotest I completely forgot to mention this new event last time. John Clavey will be organising this event,
running at the usual Dunstable venue. This will be a passenger carrying event and is held on the usual smooth grass
field. Nice easy all-forward tests are on offer and are suitable for your standard car. Entry fee is £20 (juniors £10) and
regs are nowe available.
Juniper Autotest We are back at the MK Dons stadium for the rescheduled date of
Sunday 28th August. We will have a slightly smaller area than the last time we were
here, but at least we have somewhere to run. Entries should be coming in soon, so
please can I have plenty of offers to marshal, as we will need more than last year to
manage the tests.
Concorde Autosolo Now be looking at the back end of October/early November to
run it now, but currently without a venue at present.
Autumn Autotest Running at the usual Dunstable venue, this will be a passenger
carrying event organised by myself and is held on the usual smooth grass field. Nice
easy all-forward tests are on offer and are suitable for your standard car. Entry fee is £20 (juniors £10) and regs are
nowe available.
Haymaker Autotest Running at the usual Dunstable venue and organised by Alan Wakeman, this will be a passenger
carrying event and is held on the usual smooth grass field. Nice easy all-forward tests are on offer and are suitable for
your standard car. Entry fee is £20 (juniors £10). Regs should be out towards the end of August.
Other Invites Please see the calendar above for other events we have an invite to. I can get regs for any of these, just
contact me if interested.

Member Communities Communique
July & August Update
Local Groups Representatives Election
Nominations for the role of Local Groups Representative on the Club Council have now opened.
Any member can nominate themselves for consideration for this role if they have been to a Local Group event in
the past 3 years and have the support of a Local Group Committee.
These 3 positions are pivotal in ensuring the communication between the Local Groups and the Club Council is
maintained.
Upon election, the Local Group Representatives become voting members of the Club Council with one of their
foremost purposes being to represent the views of the Local Groups at the Club Council meetings.
The Local Group Representatives are therefore the focal point for the Local Groups, offering them the opportunity
to raise issues affecting the Local Groups at the highest level, whilst also having the opportunity to influence the
support these groups receive.
If you’re interested in really making a difference to how the Member Communities are run, the deadline for all
nominations to be received by the Head of Member Communities is Thursday 1st September 2016. Email your
nomination to [email protected]
For more details or to enquire further about this role, please contact Nick: [email protected] or
telephone 01273 744695.
Dates for your Diary
The 2017 Association AGM has been scheduled for Friday 30th June. Note this is considerably earlier in the year
than usual.
It is also planned to hold a residential Groups Networking Meeting on the day before the AGM (Thursday 29th
June) to which groups will be able to send delegates.
Please try and keep these dates free. More details, timings and venue will follow once they are confirmed.
National Quiz 2016
Final reminder for groups to inform Member Communities if they wish to take part in this year’s quiz on Monday
26th September.

Website: Members Registering an Interest in an Event.
On the new website you may have noticed each event has a box to register your interest in the event.
This is a great way for members to indicate their interest in an event which will then inform the event organiser
via an automated email giving the organiser the member’s email details for them to contact them as appropriate.
If you’re an event organiser, please keep a regular check on your emails and key an eye out for members
indicating an interest in your events.
Boundless Logos and Brand Guidelines
If your group produce a newsletter or any promotional literature then please feel free to use the new Boundless

Member Communities Governance
The past 18 months have seen considerable changes being agreed by the Club Council with regards to the overall
governance of the Member Communities and in particular the processes employed to elect the various
representative committees. Please find below an outline of the agreed processes.
Interest Groups:
Each of the 8 Interest Groups will elect a number of their committee each January/February from those members
who are involved with the group (i.e. the member either attend events or has expressed an interest in the group).
Each of the committees will then elect their group officers during March/April with the appropriate Club Council
members also being elected to represent Camping and Caravanning, Motoring and Social Breaks.
Local Groups:
The election of the Local Group committees and officers has not changed and will therefore still occur in
March/April of each year with local members electing the Local Group committee and Group Officers.
The election for the Local Group Representatives on the Club Council will be held in August/September of each
year with only the Local Group committees themselves being able to vote.
Other Club Council Elections:
The Club Leader, Deputy Club Leader and Club Treasurer will be elected from the members of the Club Council as
in previous years, each autumn following their 3 year term of office.
The Club Captain will be elected by the membership at the Association AGM following their 3 year term of office.
An Independent Council Member will be elected each year by the membership at the Association AGM for a 2
year term of office.
Full details of the Club Council and Groups election processes are available from the Member Communities team
and will be included in the revised Club Handbook due to be available in September.
