UT Martin Rodeo History
• The Beginning
Rodeo at the University of Tennessee
at Martin became a collegiate sport in
the fall of 1968, when Glen Bruce, John
Pettit, Tommy Sanders, Clint Callicott,
Marvin Youngerman and Danny Graves
approached Dr. Niels W. “Doc” Robinson,
a faculty member in UT Martin’s School
of Agriculture, about sponsoring a rodeo
team.
Armed with a great love for horses,
a basic knowledge of rodeo, and $600
from the auction of a Shetland pony, UT
Martin’s first team organized and staged
the university’s first rodeo on Memorial
Day weekend, 1969.
Four teams competed in the inaugural
event at J.E. Cantwell’s Golden Sunset
Horse Ranch in Greenfield. UT Martin’s
cowboys defeated teams from Middle
Tennessee State University, Tennessee
Technological University and Austin Peay
State University to claim the first UT
Martin Rodeo Invitational Championship.
• The Seventies
Following the initial success of the
young team, UTM’s rodeo moved in 1970
to the Obion County Fairgrounds, where
UTM cowboys, faculty members, and
student volunteers built the corral from
donated materials. UT Martin won its own
rodeo for the next three years, defeating
teams from Tennessee and an entry from
East Texas State in 1972.
Two events in 1973 marked the turning
point for UTM’s rodeo program. First, the
team joined the National Intercollegiate
Rodeo Association (NIRA), the governing
organization for collegiate rodeo in the
United States. UT Martin also became a
member of the tough Ozark Region that
included 13 schools from eight Southern
states. That year, UT Martin ranked 13th
in a field of 13 Ozark teams.

However, brighter days were ahead
for UTM’s cowboys. That same year, Ed
Coleman, the father of a young UTM
cowboy, Tony Coleman (who would go on
to become a national champion) became
interested in UTM’s rodeo program. The
Goodlettsville businessman supported the
team whole-heartedly, providing funding
and tremendous moral support. As the
result of increased support, hard work
and determination, UT Martin’s rodeo
team made history in 1974.
UTM cowboys rode hard, placing
second in the region to a strong ArkansasBeebe team, and earning the team’s
first trip to the NIRA national finals in
Bozeman, Mont. UT Martin’s appearance
was the first ever by a team east of
the Mississippi River at the national
championship. When the team returned to
Martin, members were delighted to learn
that a $400 scholarship fund had been

exceed the expectation
established to assist students in meeting
their college expenses. The Spinks Clay
Company in Paris donated $300, and a
Martin businessman added $100 to setup the first formal scholarship for rodeo
team members.
The team’s progress continued in 1975.
UTM lost the Ozark Region championship
by only seven points to Arkansas-Beebe,
placing second and earning its second
consecutive trip to Bozeman. Perhaps
more importantly, a UT Martin cowboy,
Skip Emmett, became UTM’s first rodeo
champion by capturing the national allaround cowboy title and also winning the
national bareback riding championship.
Respect had been earned, and
UT Martin’s rodeo team had become
consistently competitive in both the Ozark
Region and NIRA national competition. UT
Martin won the Ozark Region for the first
time in 1976, and UTM cowboys captured
individual championships. Tony Coleman
was the region’s all-around champion.

bareback championship and was second
in the Ozark All-Around competition.

Coleman and Emmett went to the
national finals ranked first and second
respectively in the all-around category.
Emmett finished second and Coleman
third behind eventual NIRA all-around
champion James Ward of Southeast
Oklahoma. As a team, UT Martin
continued to impress collegiate rodeo
observers, placing fifth in the nation and
making the best showing to date. Team
member Ernie Roberts was the nation’s
second best bull rider as the result of a
first-place finish in Bozeman.
UT Martin repeated its Ozark
championship in 1977, and Coleman
captured regional championships in the
all-around and bareback competition.
The team again placed fifth in the NIRA
standings, and Coleman became the
second UT Martin cowboy to win a
national championship. Also in 1977, UT
Martin’s annual rodeo moved closer to
the UTM campus, locating on Bo Dodd’s
farm north of Martin. Attendance and
community interest continued to grow. This
was the first time the rodeo was held in
Martin.

UTM enjoyed a banner year in 1978. UT
Martin cowboys went undefeated in Ozark
Region competition, entering and winning
all regional rodeos. Dennis Schauck was
the region’s best bareback rider, and Keith
Morgan won the saddle bronc. Former
team member and national champion
Tony Coleman became the team’s first
part-time coach.
In 1979, Tim Best won the Ozark
Region steer wrestling title and the UTM
cowboys placed second as a team. Only
five UTM cowboys made the trip south to
Lake Charles, La. for the NIRA finals. It
was formerly reported that in 1979 UTM
did not send a “team” to the national
finals, but this information was in error
and now the record has been set straight.
In 1979, the UTM rodeo team came
to its second turning point. The annual
university rodeo moved to an outdoor
arena on the north side of campus.
Community support increased to record
numbers, and the annual spring rodeo
was becoming a social event for not only
UTM and Martin, but also for Northwest
Tennessee.
Nashville businessman Irby Simpkins
made a major contribution to the rodeo
scholarship fund, donating $10,000 over
a 10-year period to assist team members
in financing their educations.
• The Eighties
Community support reached a peak in
1980 with the implementation of Martin
Rodeo and Roundup Days, a week of
special events and activities coordinated
by the newly formed Rodeo Booster
Club. Thousands of Northwest Tennessee
residents and rodeo enthusiasts came
to enjoy the first community barbeque.
The annual Rodeo and Roundup Days
events have grown to a week-long event
with a prayer breakfast, a Miss Rodeo
Roundup contest, various types of musical
entertainment, a golf tournament, a
parade, and dances. All of the events now
are attended by thousands of participants
and spectators.
UT Martin cowboys returned to the
winning track by capturing the 1980 Ozark
Region championship. Cliff Goodrich
won the regional all-around title, and
was the Ozark’s best calf roper. George
Mesimer rode to a second-place finish in
the bareback competition. At Bozeman,
UT Martin’s team rode to a sixth-place
national finish.
UTM repeated as Ozark champions in
1981, and Mesimer proved he was the
best cowboy in the region by winning
championships in bareback riding, saddle
bronc riding, and bull riding. Mesimer also
captured the Ozark’s All-Around Cowboy
title for the second consecutive year.
(Cliff) Goodrich was a repeat champion
in the regional calf roping competition.
At the NIRA finals, Mesimer finished
second in bareback riding and bull riding,
accumulating enough points to win UTM’s
third national All-Around title. As a team,
UTM finished fifth, becoming the first team
to place fifth or higher three or more times
in the national championship standings.
UTM cowboys placed second in the
Ozark Region in 1982. John Mark Pickett
was the Ozark’s best steer wrestler, and
Bobby Gornto was the top bull rider. In
Bozeman, the team finished tenth in the
national standings, and Mark Curry was
the nation’s reserve champion calf roper.
In 1983, UTM won the Ozark Region
and was again strongly represented at
Bozeman. Mike Merchant won the regional
bronc riding title and finished second in
the nation. The team again finished in
the top 20 at the College National Finals
Rodeo (CNFR).
The 1984 rodeo served as the
inaugural event for the dedication of the
West Tennessee Agricultural Pavilion in
May. The ag pavilion is the first building of
its type to be constructed and operated
as such in the University of Tennessee
system. The permanent home of the UTM
rodeo has hosted tens of thousands
of rodeo fans during the Rodeo and
Roundup Days activities since the
dedication. Being the only college rodeo
team in the state of Tennessee, the area
is very proud to host the largest Ozark
Region rodeo and the greatest college
rodeo east of the Mississippi River.
In 1985, the UTM men’s rodeo team
won the Ozark Region and placed third
in the nation. The women’s team placed
second in the Ozark Region. (Mike)
Merchant won the regional saddle bronc
riding, as well as the national saddle
bronc riding title.
The UTM rodeo team won back-to-back
Ozark Region championships in 1986 and
87, and never lost a regional rodeo. The
1987 rodeo was called the “Governor’s
Rodeo” in honor of Tennessee Gov. Ned
Ray McWherter, the first governor from
Weakley County and an avid supporter of
the UTM rodeo team. In 1987, UTM’s Cody
Matthews won the national steer wrestling
championship.
In 1988, celebrating 20 years of rodeo,
UTM once again went undefeated in the
Ozark Region with Robbie Phillips winning
the regional all-around, Tommy Cargle
finishing second and Ricky Hyde finishing
third. Paul Johnson won the bull riding,
Hyde won the calf roping and Cargle won
the steer wrestling. The annual rodeo was
dedicated to retiring Congressman Ed
Jones. Hyde went on to finish second in
the nation in calf roping.
UTM claimed the Ozark Region title in
1989. (Ricky) Hyde captured the Ozark

Region calf roping and team roping titles.
The 1989 rodeo was dedicated to State
Sen. Milton Hamilton from Union City.
• The Nineties
In 1990, the UTM men’s team won the
Ozark Region. Donnie Crawford won the
regional team roping event and Randy
Runion was second in the regional
all-around competition. The rodeo was
dedicated to Congressman John Tanner.
Tony Coleman became the first full-time
coach rodeo coach in 1991. The men’s
team won nine of the 10 rodeos in the
region, capturing the regional crown. They
also picked up five individual titles. State
Rep. C. Ray Davis was honored at the
1991 rodeo.
The men’s team finished second in the
1992 regional competition, making the
first time in 10 years UTM had failed to
win the Ozark Region. Carl Albert State
College of Poteau, Okla., won the Ozark
Region by 25 points. The women’s team
saw its best finish in five years with a
second-place finish in the Ozark Region.
UTM sent 11 contestants to the finals in
Bozeman, Mont. The men’s team finished
tied for 12th place but the women’s team
finished third in the nation, its highest
finish ever. Merrie Martin, a junior, finished
fourth in the nation in breakaway roping
and another junior, Kim McKee, won the
barrel racing average at CNFR. The 24th
Annual UT Martin Rodeo was dedicated
to Alvin D. Escue from Milan, Tenn., a
member of the first UTM rodeo team.
In 1993, the men’s team was back
on track with a first-place finish in the
Ozark Region. The women’s team finished
second behind Southern Arkansas.
Frank Graves was the Ozark Region allaround and calf roping champion. David
Rickman was the saddle bronc champion,
while Bret Gould was the team roping
champion. Staci Patterson was the barrel
racing champion and Leigh Rawls was the
goat tying champion. Graves and Gould
won the CNFR team roping. The men’s
team tied for ninth in the nation, while the
women’s team tied for eighth.
The UTM cowboys and cowgirls finished
second to the Southern Arkansas teams
in the 1994 Ozark Region standings.
Senior standout (Staci) Patterson won
the Ozark Region barrel racing title for the
third straight year. Senior Bobby Brooks
led the men’s team with a second-place
all-around finish in the region. Both
teams earned a berth in the College
National Finals Rodeo in Bozeman, Mont.
At the CNFR, Patterson finished fifth
in the nation. Freshman Clint Madison
was fourth in the second round of the
calf roping. The men’s team finished
18th while the women’s team ended up
seventh in the national standings.
With the acquisition of the new Equine
Center, the rodeo team moved to a new
home. The 85-acre complex offers the
UTM teams expanded area for practice
stock, as well as room for riding and
future improvements.
The UTM rodeo team lost its most
ardent supporter when Dr. N.W. Robinson
passed away in January 1994. At the
spring rodeo, the arena in the West
Tennessee Ag Pavilion was named in
his honor. He also was the first person
inducted into the Rodeo Hall of Fame.
The rodeo in 1995 was dedicated to
Valerie Devillers, a 20-year-old rodeo
team member from France who died in
a tragic accident in the practice arena in
the fall of 1994. A dedication ceremony
at UT Martin renamed the West Tennessee
Agricultural Pavilion and other facilities as
the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex.
The 1995 Rodeo Hall of Fame inductees
were Glenn Bruce and Skip Emmett.
The UT Martin cowboys won the Ozark
Region in 1995 with Ken Mason winning
the all-around title, the bareback title
and finishing second in the saddle
bronc behind teammate Mike Caldwell.
The women’s team finished second
behind Missouri Valley College with Tara
Knepper finishing second in the goat
tying. At the CNFR, the UTM teams had
a disappointing finish. Clint Madison
finished fifth in the calf roping national
standings.
Both the UTM teams won the Ozark
Region in 1996. Both teams also
advanced to the College National Finals
in Bozeman, Mont. The loss of UTM’s first
full-time rodeo coach, Tony Coleman, was
a setback in midsummer, but assistant
coach, former all-around national
champion, George Mesimer, took over
as full time coach while the search for a
replacement began.
Under Mesimer’s leadership the men’s
team easily captured the Ozark Region
title with Ken Mason and Travis Masters
winning the bareback and saddle bronc
regional titles, respectively. The women’s
team secured a second-place regional
win to earn another trip to the CNFR.
Both teams finished among the top 15 in
the nation. Much of the team’s success
resulted from the increased availability of
the indoor facility at the West Tennessee
Ag Pavilion. Dr. Rodney Thomsen, director
of the West Tennessee Ag Pavilion and
Donald Parham, ag pavilion manager,
made it possible for the UTM rodeo team
to practice year-round.
A nationwide search for a candidate
to fill the rodeo coaching position at UT
Martin netted more than 50 applicants.
The best applicant, John Luthi, was
chosen from this outstanding group. Luthi
is the former head coach for the Fort
Scott (Kan.) Community College rodeo
team. He enjoyed much success at Fort
Scott including a second-place men’s
finish in the 1996 CNFR.
Luthi, his wife Diane and daughter
Katelyn came to UT Martin in July of
1997.
In 1998, under the direction of the
first year-head coach, both UTM teams
enjoyed much success. The men’s team
won the Ozark Region while the women’s
team finished second. Joe McQuillan
and Bret McMillion dominated the men’s
all-around race with McQuillan winning
the Ozark Region All-Around title and
McMillion finishing a close second. Other
regional award winners for the men’s
team were, Travis Masters and McQuillan
finishing as reserve champions in the
saddle bronc riding and bareback riding
and Jay Cochran finishing as a cochampion in the steer wrestling.
Tracy Keller led the women’s team
finishing as the women’s Ozark Region
reserve all-around champion and reserve
breakaway roping champion.
At the College National Finals in Rapid
City, S. D., the UTM team was chosen

from all of the college rodeo programs in
the nation to receive the Rawhide Team
Scholarship Award. The award recognizes
the college rodeo program that best
encourages its athletes to make good
choices, set and work toward achieving
goals and to choose winning behaviors.
The men’s team, led by McQuillan’s
third-place finish in the bull riding,
finished 15th in the nation. His 83-point
ride won the short round and was the
high marked ride of the whole college
finals. Jonathan Taylor and McMillion both
made the short round in the bareback
riding with Taylor finishing 10th and
McMillion 12th in the nation.
Both UTM rodeo teams were very
successful again in 1999, on the regional
and at the national level. UT Martin’s
men’s team won the Ozark Region and
the women’s team finished second. The
women’s team made a charge at the
regional title in the spring. The final rodeo
saw UTM fall short of the regional title,
but still qualified for the CNFR by finishing
second in the region. Carla Rogers led the
women’s team by finishing second in the
region in breakaway roping, goat tying,
and all-around cowgirl standings.
Jolyn Lowry, Jessi Dunn and Jamie
McPeake were the other CNFR qualifiers
on the women’s team.
The men’s team won the region with
consistently strong performances from
a number of cowboys all year. Jermiah
Diffee won the Ozark Region All-Around
title with Bret McMillion finishing as the
reserve champion for the second year in
a row. Diffee also finished second in the
saddle bronc riding. Johnathan Taylor won
the bareback riding title and Wil Croncich
was second in the calf roping.
Dr. Rodney Thomsen was honored
at the UTM rodeo for his many years of
service to the UT Martin rodeo program.
David Vowell and Linville Freeman were
inducted into the UT Martin Rodeo Hall of
Fame.
At the College National Finals, both
teams started out strong. McPeake split
third and fourth in the first go of the
barrels and Wil Croncich was second in
the calf roping. In the second go-around,
Jermiah Diffee won the bareback riding

Johnathan Taylor was eighth in the
barbacks, Joe McQuillan was sixth in the
bull riding, and Carla Rogers split eighth
in the breakaway roping.
The third round did not go as good for
UTM, but Diffee and Taylor still qualified in
the bareback riding championship finals.
McQuillan made it back to the bull riding
finals.
• A New Decade
The UT Martin men’s team won the
Ozark Region in 2000 and the women’s
team finished third. A.J. Price ended the
year second in the barrel racing, earning
a berth at the CNFR in Casper, Wyo.
UTM men’s team won the region with
another strong year. Jermiah Diffee won
the Ozark Region All-Around title for the
second year in a row and Bret McMillion
finished as the reserve champion for
the third consecutive year. In addition,
Diffee finished as the reserve champion
in the bareback and saddle bronc for
the second consecutive year. Ozark
Region titles were won by Scott Jones in
the bareback, Carty Allaman in the calf
roping, Cody Martin in the saddle bronc
and Bret McMillion in the steer wrestling.
UT Martin finished with the top five
bareback riders in the region, Johnathan
Taylor was third, Steve Thorburn fourth and
Josh Moon fifth.
The UT Martin agriculture department
was honored at the home rodeo for its
many years of service to the UT Martin
Rodeo Program. Tommy Sanders, Clint
Callicott, and John Pettit were inducted
into the UT Martin Rodeo Hall of Fame.
At the CNFR, Allaman finished eighth
in the first-go of the calf roping, Diffee
finished fifth in the second go-around of
the bareback riding, and Martin was first
in the second go-around of the saddle
bronc riding. The biggest highlight was
Taylor finishing third in the nation in the
bareback riding. He split first and second
in the first go-around, was fourth in the
second go-around, finished sixth in the
third go-around, and ended the year third
in the nation.
The UT Martin men’s team won the
2001 Ozark Region and the women’s

team was third. Josh Moon won the men’s
all-around title with teammate Chad
Phipps finishing third. Jamie McPeake
finished second in the women’s allaround title. In the bareback riding, Scott
Jones finished first, Moon second, and
Tim Hensley third. Joel Compton won the
regional saddle bronc title. Bret McMillion
won the steer wrestling title with a strong
finish at the UTM rodeo. Trevor Williford
finished the season tied for second in the
bull riding and Angela Reynolds finished
second in the barrel race.
College rodeo began experimenting
with a playoff system in 2001. It would
give individuals who finished in the top12
in their region another opportunity to
qualify to compete at the College National
Finals in Casper, Wyoming. The Ozark
Region was placed in a two-region playoff
which was held in Enid, Okla., the third
weekend of May. UT Martin had 18 total
team members qualify for the playoffs.
Besides the individuals listed above who
finished first or second in an event at the
regional level, UTM had four other people
qualify for the CNFR from the playoffs,
including Tim Hensley in the bareback
riding, Wil Croncich in the calf roping, Bo
Jackson in the steer wrestling, and A.J.
Price in the barrel race.
Dave Wilcox from Allegro Fine Foods
in Paris, Tenn., was honored at the UTM
rodeo for his many years of support to the
rodeo program. Mrs. Diane McPeake was
chosen by the UT Martin rodeo team as
the honorary team captain. Hall of Fame
inductees for 2001 were Cheyenne Pipkin
and, husband and wife, Marvin and Lee
Youngerman.
The college finals in Casper, Wyo., were
highlighted with strong performances from
several people. Tim Hensley finished sixth
in the first go around of the bareback.
Bret McMillion split fifth in the first two
go-arounds of the steer wrestling. Trevor
Williford won the first go-around of the
bull riding and ended up sixth in the
average and the nation. Wil Croncich
finished sixth in the average and the
nation in the calf roping. Both Williford
and Croncich competed with broken
wrists, which were not completely healed.
The men’s team finished the year 14th
out of 62 teams competing at the CNFR.
In 2002, the UT Martin men’s team
won the Ozark Region and the women’s
team finished third. UT Martin dominated
the Ozark Region in the bareback riding
with Tim Hensley winning the regional title
and Andy Carter, Scotty NeSmith, and
Josh Moon, finishing second, third and
fourth. Other top finishers were Trevor
Williford, second in bull riding, Angela
Reynolds, second in barrel racing, Moon,
third in saddle bronc riding, Jamie Fawn
Kouwe, third in goat tying, Chad Phipps,
third in the men’s all-around, and Jamie
McPeake, third in women’s all-around.
Four UT Martin athletes received
automatic byes to the College National
Finals by finishing first or second in the
region in their events. Those who earned
the byes were Hensley and Carter in the
bareback, Williford in bull riding and
Reynolds in barrel racing.
The playoff system was in its second
year and 19 UT Martin cowboys qualified
to compete in Lawton, Okla. for the
chance at gaining additional spots to
compete at the CNFR. Individuals had

to finish in the top 10 in an event at the
regional level to qualify for the playoffs.
Others who earned a berth into the
College National Finals from the playoffs
were NeSmith and Moon in the bareback
and Mark White in team roping. Diane
Alwardt finished eighth in the third round
of goat tying, while Jamie McPeake
finished fifth in the second round of
breakaway roping.
At the annual UT Martin rodeo, Vicky
Reynolds named the Rodeo Booster Club
Honorary Team Captain, and awarded a
Gift buckle. Hall of Fame inductees for
2002 were Ernie Roberts, Franklin Pope,
Cliff Goodrich and Dr. Rodney Thomsen.
Looking back at 2003, the rodeo
teams had a challenging year, but a good
year. The men’s team had to overcome
a number of obstacles and injuries, but
still managed to come from way behind
to win the Ozark Region. The women’s
team fought a tough battle too. Going into
the last rodeo and the home rodeo, the
women were 100 points out of second
place in the region. Because of a tough
home rodeo, the women’s team finished
fourth. Missouri Valley College won the
region, while Arkansas-Monicello was
second. Murray State finished third.
Two UT Martin athletes received
automatic byes to the College National
Finals Rodeo. Scotty NeSmith won the
bareback riding and Curtis Griffin won
the steer wrestling, bull riding, and men’s
all-around title.
Sixteen student-athletes qualified to
compete in the third annual playoffs
which were held in Lawton, Okla.
Individuals had to finish in the top 10 in
an event at the regional level to qualify for
the playoffs.
Jason Dement transferred to UT Martin
from Tarleton State University in January.
He had to miss the first three rodeos in
the spring because of the transfer rule.
He took advantage of the two rodeos
he was able to go to, and earned a
spot to compete at the playoffs, where
he finished fourth in the average. That
qualified him to advance to the CNFR.
Others earning spots to the CNFR from the
playoffs were Zach Waggoner, finishing
third in the steer wrestling average, and
Lyndsie Brower in the goat tying.
Overall UT Martin had five people
qualify for the CNFR in Casper, Wyo.
(Scotty) NeSmith ended up sixth in the
third round of the bareback riding and
18th in the national standings. Dement
split fifth in the first round of the calf
roping and finished 17th in the nation.
Waggoner was 18th in the nation in
steer wrestling, while Griffin won fourth in
the second round of the bull riding and
ended up 12th nationally. Brower came in
23rd nationally in the goat tying. Overall
the men’s team finished 31st out of 62
teams.
At the UT Martin rodeo, Jim Vantrease
was chosen by the UT Martin Rodeo team
to receive the honorary team captain
buckle from Gist. Hall of Fame inductees
for 2003 were Mimi Coleman and Danny
Graves.
Both won the UT Martin’s men and
women’s teams won Ozark Region titles in
2004 and finished the year in the among
the 15 teams in the nation. The women’s
team was 13th and the men’s team 14th
in the nation after the College National

Finals.
At the regional level, UT Martin swept
the bareback riding, winning the top four
spots, but only the top three spots earned
berths to the CNFR. Josh Shackleford won
the region, Scotty NeSmith was second
and Matt Bright was third. Bright also won
the rookie of the year all-around for the
Ozark Region. Shackleford finished the
year eighth in the nation while NeSmith
was 13th.
Jason Dement also had outstanding
year. He won the calf roping. At the college
finals Dement finished fifth in the nation.
Others competing at the CNFR for the
men’s team were Zak Danison in the calf
roping and Curtis Griffin in the bull riding.
The women’s team was made up of
Courtney Barnfield who won the region in
the barrel race and finished the year 10th
in the nation; Audrey Lipsky who finish
second in the Ozark Region and finished
15th in the nation; and Lyndise Brower
who qualified in both the goat tying and
breakaway roping.
Brower had a good CNFR and placed
in the first two rounds of the goat tying.

Jeff Fuehring just barely missed
getting to the CNFR ending up fourth in
the bareback riding. He got beat out by
teammate Russ Ratkowski by less than
two points.
Kelley Jo Miller led the women’s team
going into the last regional rodeo with a
good chance to go to the CNFR in the goat
tying but fell short.
The team had a tough time at the
college finals with not much going right.
The highlight was Scotty NeSmith finishing
the year 15th in the nation in the bareback
riding. Scotty had a great career at UT
Martin.
At the UT Martin rodeo, rodeo booster
club member, Gary Roach, was chosen
by the rodeo team to receive the beautiful
Gist belt buckle as the honorary team
captain recipient.
The rodeo Hall of Fame inductee for
2005 was Dale Bolding of Martin.
The UT Martin women’s team used
2006 for development. The young team
reaped the rewards of hard work by
finishing the year fourth in the Ozark
Region.
The UT Martin men’s team was blessed
She finished fourth in the nation. In the
breakaway roping, she split second and
third in the third round and ended up
12th in the nation. Brower earned enough
points in the two events to win the reserve
national all-around cowgirl title.
Russ Finney was chosen as the
honorary UT Martin rodeo team captain
and received a Gist buckle. The Hall of
Fame inductees for 2004 were Bobby
Gornto and Linda Sheilds.
The men’s team had another very good
year in 2005, while our women’s team
struggled after graduating some key team
members in 2004. Scotty NeSmith led
our men’s team to their 11th straight Ozark
Region title. Scotty not only won the allaround title but he also won the bareback
title, second in the steer wrestling and
fourth in the tie down roping.
Six men received automatic bids to
the College National Finals in Casper,
Wyo. Besides NeSmith in the bareback
riding and steer wrestling, UT Martin had
Matt Bright and Russ Ratkowski winning
second and third in the bareback riding.
Whit Ashe won third in the saddle bronc
riding while Curtis Griffin claimed third in

Adrienne Vought qualified for the College
National Final Rodeo in breakaway roping.
Vought had a good CNFR and ended the
year fifth in the nation. With Adrienne’s
points, our women’s team ended the year
18th in the nation.
Our men’s team won the Ozark Region
team title in 2007, qualifying six men to
the CNFR. Ty Atchison won the regional
saddle bronc riding title and Matt Bright
won the regional bareback riding title.
Other men’s team members that earned
automatic byes were Brad Bates in saddle
bronc and Brent Menz in bull riding. To fill
the last two spots on our six-man team,
Russ Ratkowski was chosen to compete
in bareback riding and Boyd Quinley was
taken to the CNFR to participate in the
calf roping contest.
At the CNFR, Matt Bright split fifth and
sixth in the third go of the bareback riding
competition. Bates finished fourth in the
first go of the saddle bronc riding. Quinley
won the first go of the calf roping with a
time of 8.8 seconds and was seventh in
the third go. Quinley went into the final
go around winning the round. Quinley’s
calf kicked loose from the tie before the
six-second time limit in the final go and
cost Quinley a national title. Quinley still
ended the year ranked sixth in the nation.
Our men’s team finished the year 15th
in the nation. We would have liked to
have done better, but are thankful for our
accomplishments.
At our UT Martin Spring College Rodeo,

team captain recipient, given by our rodeo
team. The 2007 Rodeo Hall of Fame
inductees were Barbara Cooper, Nelson
Davis and Mike Higgs.
In 2008, both the UT Martin Men’s
and Women’s Teams finished second in
the Ozark Region, qualifying both teams
for the College National Finals Rodeo in
Casper, Wyoming.
Nicole Todd led the women’s team with
a commanding performance, winning the
Ozark Region Barrel Racing title. Other
qualifying as part of the women’s team at
the CNFR were Brittany Duff in goat tying,
Loren Glasco as a header in team roping,
and Molly Alexander in barrel racing. At
the college finals, Molly Alexander finished
fourth in the third go around of barrel
racing and the women’s team finished
23rd in the nation for the year.
The men’s team was led by Ty Atchinson,
who won the Ozark Region in Saddle
Bronc Riding for the third year in a row
and the Men’s All Around title for the
second time. Matt Smith dominated
bareback riding, winning the Ozark Region
and Brent Menz won the Ozark Region
Bull Riding. Others filling out the men’s
team at the CNFR were Boyd Quinley as a
header in team roping, Ryan Pope in steer
wrestling, and Brent Menz as a heeler in
team roping.
At the college finals, Boyd Quinley
and his partner from Southern Arkansas,
Cody Prescott, finished second in the
third go around of team roping. Brent
Menz split second in the second go and
finished ninth in the nation in bull riding.
Ty Atchinson split fifth in the third go, was
second in the short go and finished fifth
in the nation in saddle bronc riding. Matt
Smith finished fourth in the first go, third
in the second go, seventh in the third go,
split second in the short go and finished
second in the nation in bareback riding.
The men’s team ended the year third in
the nation. This is the highest finish by
either team since the individual and team
national titles started being awarded only
from points you earned at the CNFR.
At the UTM Rodeo, booster club
member Winnie Taylor received the Gist
Buckle, as the honorary team captain
recipient, given by the rodeo team. The
2008 Rodeo Hall of Fame inductees were
Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Wooten of Dresden,
Tenn.
In 2009, The University of Tennessee
at Martin women’s rodeo team finished
fourth and the men’s team finished
second in the Ozark Region which
qualified the men’s team to compete at
the College National Finals (CNFR) in
Casper, Wyo.
Heather Moore led the women’s team
by winning second in the Ozark Region in
the barrel race, qualifying her to represent
UT Martin at the CNFR in Casper.
Matt Smith led the men’s team into
the CNFR by winning the Ozark Region
bareback riding title for the second year in
a row. Brent Menz received an automatic
bye in the bull riding by finishing the year
third in the Ozark Region.
Others that filled out the men’s team
at the CNFR were Sheldon Rinkes in the
bareback riding, Jeff Askey in the bull
riding and Cory Kirk in the calf roping and
steer wrestling.
At the college finals, Kirk won fourth in
the first go of the steer wrestling. Smith
was fifth in the first go and seventh in
the second go of the bareback riding.
Rinkes ended up 13th in the nation in
the bareback riding and Menz split third
and fourth in the second go and 10th in
the nation in the bull riding. Askey started
the finals on fire, winning the first go
and second in the second go of the bull
riding. He ended up fifth in the nation in
the bull riding. In addition, Askey won an
$1,800 academic scholarship for having
the highest GPA of any other male athlete
from a four-year school entered at the
CNFR.
The UT Martin men’s team ended the
year ninth in the nation.

Heather Moore led our women’s team,
by winning the regional barrel race title
for the second year in a row. Brittany
Pratt and Molly Alexander both received
automatic byes to the CNFR. Brittany
finished second in the region in the
women’s All-Around standings and Molly
finished third in the region in the barrels.
Brittany Pratt competed in the Breakaway
Roping and Team Roping at CNFR. Abby
McDuff earned the fourth spot on our
women’s team going to the CNFR in the
Breakaway Roping. Maggie Wright was the
fifth girl impacting our women’s team, but
wasn’t able to go to the finals.
Our men’s team finished second in the
region with five automatic byes to the
CNFR, led by Jeff Askey winning the bull
riding title, Josh Chase finishing second
in the region in the bareback riding and
Zach Jackson tied for second in the bull
riding. Cory Kirk was third in the calf
roping and Casey Cason finished third in
the bareback riding. Chase Miller earned
the sixth spot on our men’s team finishing
fourth in the region in the saddle bronc
riding. Jordan Thrasher had a great spring
but didn’t quite have enough to go to the
finals.
At the CNFR, Heather Moore split eighth
in the first go, was sixth in the second
go and finished ninth in the nation in the
barrels. Abby McDuff was ninth in the third
go of the breakaway roping and Molly
Alexander finished fourteenth in the nation
in the barrel race.
Cory Kirk split seventh in the first go of
the calf roping, and finished twelfth in the
nation. Josh Chase finished tenth in the
nation in the bareback riding. Jeff Askey
had a fantastic CNFR, winning the first go
with an 86.5 point ride for the second year
in a row. Jeff was eighth in the third go,
and came into the short go sitting in fifth
place in the nation. In the championship
finals Jeff rode the bull China Grove to a
score of 88.5 points, winning the short
go and winning the bull riding National
Title. He just rode outstanding. Assistant
coach and athletic trainer Nelson Davis
lost a challenge he had issued to any UT
Martin team member. Coach Davis had
a standing challenge for any UT Martin
rodeo team member that won a National
Championship title, they could cut his
hair. Coach Davis convinced Jeff to wait
until we got home to cut his hair. It was a
big event taking place on September 1st
in the old field house of the Elam Center
on campus.
At our UT Martin rodeo, Rodeo Booster
Club member Katie Brooks received the
honorary Team Captain buckle given by
our team. Our rodeo was chosen the Ozark
Region Rodeo of the Year for the fifth year
in a row. The 2010 Rodeo Hall of Fame
inductees were David Pruitt, Jerry Jones,
and Alvin Escue.
In 2011, the UT Martin women’s team
won the Ozark Region team title for the
second consecutive year, while the UT
Martin men finished second in the region.

Both teams qualified for the College National Finals in Casper,

Chelsie McDade, Heather Moore and Abby McDuff lead the
women’s team, each earning automatic byes to the CNFR.
McDade won the Ozark Region Women’s All-Around title, allowing
her to take two events, breakaway roping (2nd in region) and
goat tying (5th in the region) to the finals. Moore won the Ozark
Region barrel racing title qualifying her for the CNFR. McDuff’s
bye to the CNFR was in the goat tying, where she finished second
in the region. McDade also picked up a secnd event, breakaway
roping (5th in Region) by earning more points in a second event
than any other girl on the team.
The UT Martin men’s team finished second in the Ozark Region
with four automatic byes to the CNFR. The team was led by
freshman Tyler Waltz who finished second in the men’s all-around
race and third in the bareback riding. Freshman Clay Mitchell and
John Alley earned their bye to the CNFR by finishing third in the
region in the team roping. Waltz also earned a spot at the CNFR
in the steer wrestling for a second event. He finished second in
the All-Around.
Among the other UT Martin cowboys earning spots to compete
at the CNFR were Jordan Thrasher in the steer wrestling; Ben
Walker in the tie down roping; and Ty Hughston earned a spot in
the saddle bronc riding. Hughston was unable to go to the CNFR,
so John Alley filled his spot and competed in the steer wrestling
as a second event.
At the CNFR, (Heather) Moore was seventh in the first go of
the barrel race and came back to claim second in the second go.
She was sitting second in the average going in to the third go.
However, an injury to her good horse, Hero, during her second-go
run ended her quest for a national title. McDade posted a 3.2 in
the breakaway roping and was tenth in the 3rd go.
Mitchell and Alley were 6.9 on their first team roping steer and
finished third in the first round. They ended the week finishing
15th in the nation. Walker was 10.0 on his calf and finished
tenth in the second round, while Thrasher was 14th in the first go
of the steer wrestling with a 5.6 second run.
Waltz had a solid performance at his first CNFR in the
bareback riding. He finished tenth in the first go with a 73-point
ride, 4th in the second go with a 75.5-ride, and seventh in the
third go with a 73-point ride. When the dust settled, Waltz was
11th in the nation in bareback riding.
The UT Martin men’s team finished 24th in the nation and
while the women’s team was 18th in the nation.
At the UT Martin Rodeo, Camille Higgs, a member of the Rodeo
Booster Club, received the Honorary Team Captain buckle given
by the UT Martin team.
For the sixth consecutive year, the UT Martin rodeo was chosen
the Ozark Region Rodeo of the year.
The 2011 Rodeo Hall of Fame inductees were former team
members, Kathy (Curry) McCloy, Ken Mason and Merrie Carol
Martin.
The UT Martin men’s and women’s teams in 2012 took
second-place in the Ozark Region and qualified for the College
National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper, Wyo.
Chelsie McDade, Heather Moore, Katie Brown and Dacia
Horne made up the women’s team. McDade and Moore both won
automatic byes to the CNFR, McDade with her regional goat-tying
win and Moore with her second-place finish in the barrel race.
Brown and Horne both qualified for the team in barrel racing.
The men’s team included Ty Hughston, Jordan Thrasher, Clay
Mitchell, John Alley, Ben Walker and Clark Adcock. All six team
members won automatic byes to the CNFR.
Hughston earned his automatic bye by finishing third in saddle
bronc riding; Jordan Thrasher finished second in tie-down roping;
Mitchell and Alley took home third-place in team roping, and
Walker and Adcock took second-place in team roping. Adcock
also finished second in the men’s All-Around Race, allowing him
to enter a 2nd event, the tie-down roping.
The team didn’t get much done in the first three rounds at the
CNFR, but had a great short go. Thrasher roped his calf in 10.6
seconds and finished eighth in the nation. Walker and Adcock
won second-place in the team roping short go with a six-second
run and finished fifth in the nation. Moore, who has competed in
the CNFR for four consecutive years, finished her barrel race in
14.02 seconds, a new personal best. She finished at the finals
third in the short go and ended the year sixth in the nation.
The men’s team finished up 24th in the nation and the
women’s team finished 27th in the nation.
At our UT Martin rodeo, the team gave Rodeo Booster Club
member Dave Pruitt the Honorary Team Captain buckle. Our
rodeo was named the Ozark Region Rodeo of the Year for the
seventh year in a row.
The 2012 Rodeo Hall of Fame inductees were former team
members Joe McQuillan, Bill Newsom and Shea Lynn Baggett.

TIMED EVENTS
Team Roping
An event that owes its very existence to the everyday
chores of the working cowboy, is Team Roping. On an
open range, it is often necessary to catch an animal in
order to doctor or brand it. This is where the first team
roping took place. In rodeo competition today, team
roping is a co-ed event. The header starts the time when
he/she lunges out of the chute in pursuit of the runaway
steer. His job is to rope the steer’s horns, take a dally
by wrapping the loose end of his rope around the saddle
horn, and turn the steer away from his partner. With
tremendous skill and accurate timing, the heeler then
ropes the steer’s hind legs and take his dally. When both header and heeler face their horses toward the steer,
time stops. If only one hind leg is caught, the team receives a five-second penalty, which makes this event
even more difficult. Because of the excellent teamwork involved, and the fact that both sexes can enter – this
contest is a favorite by many.
Tie Down
The grace and beauty of true horsemanship along with
athletic skills of both horse and rider is evidenced in
this popular event. Tie Down is a race against time with
seconds counted in decimal points. To win, horse and
rider must work together with precision teamwork. The
contest begins when the calf is released from a chute
with rider and horse chasing behind. A good horse will
carry its rider in perfect accord with every move of the
calf and when the loop is thrown will “stop on a dime”
allowing the roper to dismount, run down the rope,
throw the calf, and tie any three legs with a “piggin’
string.” To rope “in the money” all must be done in a
matter of seconds, and the roper’s tie must hold after
he has signaled “all done” with hands in the air.
Steer Wrestling
Steer Wrestling, also called “bulldoggin,” is an event that requires
not only speed and agility but also physical size and strength. When
a man drops from a thundering horse onto a running steer, stops the
steer, and throws him to the ground – spectators see athletic skill
overcome heavily weighted odds. In keeping with the sharing and
helping character of rodeo, the steer wrestler is allowed a partner,
called a “hazer,” to aid him in lining up the charging steer. This
assistance helps to assure perfect placement of the steer and horse
before the cowboy dismounts. The time stops after the contestant
has thrown and turned the steer’s head and all four feet are out in
the same direction.
The Barrier
In all timed events, the element of “fair time” is extended even to the calves and steers. Before the competition begins,
the lengths of the “barrier” ropes are predetermined. After the longest rope is stretched across the box, it is tied onto
a shorter piece of rope around the calf’s neck with a breakable cotton string. When the calf runs from the chute, he will
pull the barrier rope when he has reached a fair distance to insure a head start. However, if the rider and horse break the
barrier stretched across the box before the calf or steer does, the rider will be assessed a ten-second penalty.

As a sign of our changing times and equal opportunity,
Women’s Breakaway Roping is a modification and
adaption of the Men’s Tie-Down roping. To win in this
event, not only must the cowgirl become a talented
expert at roping calves, she must also be mounted on
a very well trained horse. The horse must leave the box
with a great burst of speed to catch the calf a short
distance outside the gate. The loop is dabbed around
the escaping calf’s head and the rope, which is tied to
the saddlehorn, breaks away from the saddle when the
slack is pulled tight. A handkerchief is tied to the end of the rope, to signal the moment the time should stop.
This event is complicated by the dashing and darting action of the calves, so contestants carry two ropes, in
case they miss with their first throw. Similar to the men’s timed events, the girl, too, must start from behind a
pulled barrier.
Goat Tying
Goat tying is the only girls’ event that requires fast footwork and
agile dexterity on the ground, as well as basic horsemanship
skills. There is a goat tied to a rope at the time end of the
arena. The cowgirl’s time begins when she crosses the starting
line at the other end of the arena at a full run. She charges
down the arena, stops at the goat, dismounts running, catches
the squirming goat, throws him down, and ties any three legs.
In this event, a leather rope or string is used for tying. The time
stops when she signals the end of her tie by throwing her hands
in the air. The goat must stay tied for 5 seconds in order for the
contestant to receive a qualifying time.
Barrel Racing
The oldest and most competitive girls’ event in college rodeo is the
Cloverleaf Barrel Race. The horses ridden in this event are highly
trained and extremely athletic, matching their speed and turns to
the cues given by their riders. The determined rider and her mount
must make two turns one direction and one in the other around three
barrels. These barrels are set in a triangular pattern, a prescribed
distance apart. The clock stops when the girl and horse cross
the same line after completing their run. Winners are many times
determined by differences of less than a tenth of a second, so the
five-second penalty for an overturned barrel can be devastating.
Excellent balance and horsemanship are a must. This event is
certainly one of sheer elegance and precise timing.

Considered by the most as the classic rodeo event, Saddle Broc
Riding is no beginner’s event. There’s a reason – the instinctive
reactions required to keep in the stirrups, a sense of what a horse
will do next, and the ability to synchronize with a bronc’s movement
– make this event one with no substitute for years of experience.
Since there is nothing solid to hold onto, a cowboy can only stay in
the saddle through timing and balance. The proven rider deliberately
matches his spurring action with the bucking bronc’s rhythm beneath
him, making the whole rider appear smooth.
Bareback Riding
Bareback Riding is that
wild, spurring event which illustrates that old saying “There never
was a hoss that couldn’t be rode, and there never was a cowboy
that couldn’t be throwed.” From the moment the gate swings open
and the horse and rider explode from the chute, both must perform
exceptionally well if the cowboy is to win. A suitcase-like handle is
attached to the top of a leather “riggin” cinched around the horse’s
middle. The contestant grips this handle with one hand and keeps
his other hand free and high in the air. Ideally, bareback riders want
to try to spur the horse with each jump, reaching as far forward as
they can with their feet, then jerking their spurs upwards toward the
rigging. The longer the spurring stroke along the horse’s neck, the
higher the ride is scored.
RIDING EVENTS
Saddle Bronc Riding
Bull Riding
The most popular rodeo riding event, and the most dangerous, is the Bull Riding. A
loose rope straps a man’s hand to a ton of explosive power. Because the cowboy
never knows what the animal beneath him is going to do next, he must draw upon
his sharpest physical and mental abilities when trying to conquer this twisting
tornado. To keep his position and balance, a bull rider is constantly grabbing for
new holds with his feet and continually pulling up on the rope. The more powerful a
bull bucks and the faster he spins, the more points the ride is worth. A bull rider is
unquestionably a breed apart with the courage and determination to be the victor in
this contest between man and beast.
Points to Consider
1. The cowboy holds on with one hand and must keep the other hand high in the air. Touching any part of himself or the
animal receives a “no score.”
2. The rider must stay aboard his draw for a full eight seconds.
3. There are two judges in the riding events who score the cowboys and the livestock they ride. Both judges mark the rider
from 0-25 and his stock from 0-25.
4. To make a qualified ride, a bareback or saddle bronc rider must “mark the horse out” by having his spurs over the
horse’s shoulders when the animal’s front feet touch the ground, the first jump out of the chute.
5. Since spurring is not required in bull riding as it is in other events, a bull rider may earn extra points by spurring.
6. Animals are awards points for hard bucking, high kicking, lunging, twisting, and spinning. The harder he is to ride, the
more points his performance is worth.

or the past four years, the Dan Post Boot Company, located in Clarksville, Tennessee has donated a pair
of boots to each member of the rodeo team and both coaches. They have developed a group of boots called
Dan Post Cowboy Certified, geared toward the boot wearer who wears boots every day and rides horses. UTM
Rodeo alumni Bill Hoy approached Dan Post about a partnership whereby Dan Post would provide Cowboy
Certified boots for the rodeo team and coaches. The idea turned into a win-win opportunity for both parties and
has benefited each tremendously. One of the rodeo team members who wears his Dan Post boots regularly in
regional competition and at the past College National Finals Rodeo, John Alley states, “I think they are a great
boot. They are very durable and I can wear them in and out of the arena”. Coach John Luthi thinks the Dan Post
