St John Baptist de La Salle...
pray for us
Live Jesus in our hearts...
forever
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
La Salle College is a Catholic school inspired by
the tradition of our founder, St John Baptist de
La Salle. In seeking to excel in our educational
pursuits, our College must also seek to live
out Gospel values and model the example
set by St John Baptist. Through the many
facets of our Evangelisation Plan, our school
community works to provide opportunities for
the integration of faith and life. Our core business at La Salle can be
described as focussing on the head, the heart and the hands.
The head refers to the formal Religious Education curriculum that
provides all our students with appropriate knowledge and experience of
our faith. Under the leadership of Adrian Martino (Director of Christian
Ministry) and all of our Religious Education teachers, the College has
further developed programmes that cater for the spiritual, emotional
and social demands of our students from Years 8 to 12.
Our work of the heart refers to the liturgical opportunities that are provided
for students, parents and staff. Led by our Chaplain, Fr Roman SDS, and
Alfiero Cardona, (Liturgy Coordinator) our community has been given
frequent and meaningful exposure to the Church’s sacramental programme.
Alfiero’s role is to work closely with Fr Roman in continuing to provide
experiences that enable a personal response to the message of Jesus. All of
our students are given opportunities to be involved in whole school, year,
House and class masses, along with other liturgical experiences.
I would also like to commend the wonderful support provided by Yvette
Cobley and Tammara Dawson in their role as staff liaison to the SRC.
During the semester we have seen the launch of the Friends of
La Salle. This parent body, which incorporates, Hospitality, Grounds and
Maintenance, Policy Consultation, Fundraising and Parent Education
has commenced planning activities for Semester II and into 2008.
I look forward to the future with a sense of a significant input from our
parent body. A final word of thanks
is reserved for Sabrina Lynsdale, our
Marketing and Public Relations Officer,
and editor of the Western Lasallian.
Her diligence and attention to detail
has ensured another outstanding issue
of this publication.

Mr Wayne Bull

The hands of our Christian outreach revolves around our Christian
Service Learning programme.
Our Christian Service Learning
Coordinator, Christine Aldous, has developed programmes that provide
all students in the College with the opportunity to be involved in the
Christian call to serve. From Semester II, Christine will be supported
by Lisa Walton and Alessandra Hardwick, who will be coordinating the
Year 9 programme.
You would be aware from press reports and my Delagram pieces, that the
changes to Years 11 & 12 which were part of the implementation of the
Curriculum Framework have largely been placed on hold for 2007 and
2008. Our staff will continue to work with the Curriculum Council, the
Catholic Education Office, and colleagues in other schools, to ensure that
our students receive access to the best possible educational outcomes.
The College Strategic Plan (2007 to 2011) which was developed last
year after extensive consultations with parents, students and staff, is now
in the execution phase. A full copy of the Strategic Plan is available from
the College’s website. As part of our planning for the future, the College
Board has appointed the architectural firm of Parry and Rosenthal to
undertake the development of a Master Plan for the College. Part
of this planning will include provisions for the arrival of Year 7s to the
College. The Catholic Education Commission has resolved that by 2015
all Year 7 students will be enrolled at secondary schools. For La Salle this
will not occur before 2010.
I would like to also acknowledge the ongoing and exceptional
contributions that our Student Representative Council makes in fostering
our College community. 2007 saw a restructure of this student body and
I have been delighted with the changes. Under the leadership of Tara
Franzinelli, (Head Girl) and Matthew Palmieri, (Head Boy) all members
of the SRC have been outstanding role models for the student body.
These students have provided support, leadership and inspiration. I know
that, with young people of this drive, initiative and determination, much
of the scepticism of our society about future generations is misplaced.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL’S REPORT
The first semester of school at La Salle College has been one of excitement
and planning for the members of the Student Representative Council (SRC).
Between studying for exams, brainstorming new ideas for the College and
preparing for Stomp, the SRC have also set other ideas into action.
This term students are able to enjoy an extra luxury during their break times.
Students in Years 8, 9 and 10 have been provided with ping-pong tables; one
for each of the year groups. This has proved to be a very popular decision
and students are often reminded to submit their ideas for improvements to
the College.
Stomp is a day where students and staff alike dress up to a particular theme,
watch a lip sync competition and dance to music related to the theme. It is a
day of fun and celebration for all. The cost to dress up is a $2.00 donation and
chocolates and other confectionary
were sold. Proceeds will be going to
Caritas Australia.
This year’s Stomp theme was the
80s, and it was held on the last day of
Term 2, Friday, 6 July. The SRC looked
forward with anticipation for this event
and to raise money for those who
aren’t as lucky to attend such a great
school; or even any school at all.
To publicize Stomp this year, members of the SRC bravely put on a performance
at an assembly. Some dressed up and acted out video clips from such 80s songs
as ‘Eye of the Tiger’ by Survivor and ‘Material Girl’ by Madonna. Others put on
a fashion parade, which ranged from such outfits as 80s punk, to activists with
“Choose life” shirts and washed out jeans, uptown girls, leg-warmer wearing
dancers, and even Superman. The assembly was a great hit as students laughed
at the crazy costumes people wore and teachers laughed at the memories of
actually wearing the outfits.
The SRC would also like to welcome its newest Year 8 members for 2007:
Jaz Cappeau, Bridgett Hodgkin, Bob Billing and Cheye Musca, who are
extremely capable students and the SRC are readily looking forward to getting
their input and ideas in the upcoming weeks and months.
This semester has been full with
Mission Aid Day, preparation for
Stomp, new members, ping-pong
tables and exams, yet the SRC still
have some cards up their sleeves.
Already they are planning a social
for early next term and preparing
for the next Radio La Salle.

Hasluck Leadership Award
Arielle Cooper wins Hasluck Leadership Award!
Year 11 student Arielle Cooper is the worthy recipient of this year’s Hasluck Leadership
Award, continuing the College’s successful record in this competition. The award is sponsored
by Hasluck MP, Mr Stuart Henry, and recognises outstanding leaders in schools within the
Hasluck electorate. Arielle was successful in being chosen as La Salle’s representative in
the competition and she then competed against students from ten other schools for the
prize of a trip to Canberra to experience leadership at the highest level. A panel of judges
declared Arielle the winner and she was presented with her award by Julie Bishop, Minister
for Education and Training, at the presentation ceremony. Arielle will travel to Canberra next
month and she is certainly looking forward to meeting some of the nation’s leaders and
learning more about leadership. Arielle’s success follows current Head Girl, Tara Franzinelli’s
win last year. Tara spoke at the presentation ceremony about her experience in Canberra
and of the great benefit she gained from the experience. The College congratulates Arielle
on this fine achievement and we hope she has a rewarding trip to the nation’s capital.

MISSION AID DAY
Mission Aid Day, 2007, was a truly rewarding and
exciting experience for all involved. This year we had
some fantastic and memorable new additions to our
Mission Aid Day experience. This included a La Salle
Dance Party run by Mr White’s PCG, where students
paid a fee to enter a room that was completely black,
with disco lighting and loud, pumping music.
We began the day with a very special and unique
liturgy where staff washed the feet of various SRC
members, to symbolise Jesus washing the feet of his
disciples. SRC members then proceeded to wash
the feet of younger students in the school. This was
an emotional experience that will be remembered
for years to come.
Students were able to ride camels around the front
oval which offered some hilarious responses by
both staff and students. Students were also able
to compete against their peers in a play station
competition which was definitely enjoyed by many
students. Mission Aid Day would not be a Mission
Aid Day without endless amounts of food. This
year we were treated to donuts, pancakes, kebabs,
pizza, chips, lollies, spiders, slushies, chicken rolls and
sausage sizzles which were enjoyed by all!
During part of the day we experienced the
remarkable musical talents of Ms Juber, Mr Cardona,
Mr White and Mr Forte, our talented groundsman.
However, the entertainment didn’t stop there, with
many talented students taking part in the Mission
Aid Day Talent Quest. It was here that “The Giggles”Year 12 boys impersonating the Wiggles, made their
debut and our day sadly came to a close.
Mission Aid Day managed to raise a grand total of
$14,000. A huge thank you goes out to all involved
in this wonderful event that goes towards improving
the lives of so many. It is vital to remember that
with all of this fun and excitement, there is a core
purpose, to touch hearts and support The Lasallian
Foundation.

Languages Week
In Week 5 this term, we celebrated Languages Week at the College as
our way of promoting the importance and enjoyment of learning another
language. Some of our activities included:
• A daily PCG Quiz which incorporated questions from the two countries
and languages taught here - Italian and Indonesian.
• A display in the Library, showing the creativity of the Italian and
Indonesian students in presenting their ID Card tasks.
• An international food fest in conjunction with the Canteen. Students
and staff were invited to try an international dish for lunch, including
such delicacies as Gourmet Beef Lasagna, Gourmet Vegetable Lasagna,
Continental Rolls, Teriyaki Chicken and Rice, Teriyaki Chicken and Noodle,
Chicken Fried Rice, Curry Beef, Curry Chicken and Rice and Sushi.
• Year 8 Italian vs Year 8 Indonesian Soccer Competitions on the front oval.
These were held during the language lessons and were enjoyed by all.
The matches were a draw until the final game, where the Italian students
won 1-0. Well done to the Year 8s for embracing this opportunity with
great sportsmanship.
• The Students vs Staff Indoor Soccer Match. This was the 3rd annual
competition. The game was in a deadlock for the first twenty minutes as the
students kept the teachers at bay. The break through came in the second half
when the teachers scored three goals. However, the students never gave in
with their enduring enthusiasm. Congratulations to both the students and
staff on an entertaining match.
• An Italian Cakes Stall where students and staff were given the opportunity
to savour a slice of traditional Italian torte and delicious cannoli.
• An Italian and Indonesian buffet lunch for the staff. This was ably catered
for by the Year 11 Catering class under the supervision of Ms Lennon.
The students did a great job and must be congratulated for their efforts.
The aim of languages week from an Indonesian teaching perspective was
to increase the sense of relationship between Australia and Indonesia.
Laminated cards were displayed around the school educating both staff and
students about the tangible links between Australia and Indonesia. Many
places around the school were given their Indonesian names in order to
increase the presence of Indonesia around the school.
On the Monday of Languages Week, Pak Hosken set up an Indonesian
Animals Awareness and Project Sunbear Donation Drive outside G04. The
aim of the exercise was to increase the awareness around La Salle College
of the types and diversity of Indonesian animals, but also to raise money for
Project Sunbear at Perth Zoo by conducting ‘a jellybean raffle’. The winner
of the raffle was Hayley Johnson from MIE’s PCG, and a total of $100 was
raised for Project Sunbear.
The second surf film festival featuring the short film: ‘The Turner Brothers get
lost in Indo’ was a great success. The Lasallian hardcore surfing community
marvelled at the adventures of two brothers chasing the most perfect and
uncrowded wave on the planet. The audience definitely gained a better
understanding and perspective of the precious gems that the Indonesian
archipelago has to offer.
The satay stall run by Pak Hosken and some Year 8 students was a huge
success with all satay skewers selling out fast. The chicken skewers were
lovingly prepared by the renowned butcher Mr Palmieri, and Pak Hosken
finished them off with his authentic Indonesian satay sauce recipe from the
Sasak People of Lombok. A truly delicious language experience.

• An International Morning Tea for the staff. This was held in conjunction
with Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea where the staff donated to The
Cancer Council to participate.
We hope that students continue with their language studies, as learning
to communicate in a language other than English enables students to get
to know their own language better, understand and appreciate people of
different cultures, further develop their language skills in listening, speaking,
reading, viewing and writing, and broaden their career choices. Furthermore,
knowledge of another language promotes community and family relations
in a multicultural society.
Finally, a special thank you to all the staff and students for supporting our
events, and making Languages Week 2007 such a success.

Seasons Restaurant
– Winter
Seasons Restaurant was booked out for their Winter themed
Term 2 evening. For this event, staff were invited to book a table
and enjoy theYear 11 Hospitality class present their winter menu in
an a la carte format.
Significant preparations and trialling of menus had taken place
before the final dishes were chosen and the final menu contained
items such as: Sweetcorn Fritters with Homemade Chilli Tomato
relish, Chargrilled Chicken with Nam Jim, Snapper fillets with
braised fennel, roast capsicum sauce and sweet potato chips, Veal
with a mustard mushroom sauce with potato rosti and buttered
spinach and for Dessert: Decadent chocolate pots, pear tart tatin,
and orange and pistachio cheesecake.
The class was divided into Front of House (waiting) and kitchen
staff and the waiters prepared the classroom C1 for our diners.
The room was decorated with a dark blue, red and white
colour scheme and with help from Ms McClymont, artworks
transformed the venue. With assistance from Mrs Watson and
Mrs Lorenti, the waiters performed beautifully on the night,
providing attentive, friendly service for our customers.
The kitchen staff worked wonderfully, with all students putting
in a team effort and helping out where they could. Overall the
night was a huge success with glowing comments from the
teachers present. These students are to be commended on
their commitment and enthusiasm. They made their teacher,
Ms Lennon, very proud.

YEAR 8 FOOD AWARENESS MORNING TEAS
Mrs Gooden’s two Food and Nutrition classes each held a morning tea for parents and staff during
Term 2 to show off their food preparation skills developed during Semester I. The morning teas were
well supported by parents with around twenty present each day. The students should be very proud
of their efforts preparing food for their class function and their behaviour
on the day.

YEAR 10 FOOD EXPO’S
In Year 10 Food and Nutrition, our main focus this
semester has been foods from around the world. To
end off our term of multicultural foods we held a
Food Expo. We spent the weeks leading up, selecting
a country, researching aspects of that country and
trialling traditional recipes of that country.
Finally the big day came. Ms Lennon’s class were the
first to do their expo on Wednesday of Week 10.
Our room was filled with colours, flags, signs, posters
and beautiful strong aromas coming from the
exciting range of foods. There were countries from
every corner of the world. From the coconut filled
Caribbean, Jamaica made its appearance, Hawaii
– hula skirts and all, Egypt and its great pyramids
and many more.
Each group was to create one savoury and one
sweet dish and the choices made were excellent as
all of the food was gone in no time. Parents, family
and teachers were all invited to come and visit the
food expos and get a taste of the cultures. The wide
range of props and information on the tables sent
everyone home having learnt something new.
Overall the expo was a great experience. It was
wonderful to learn about the countries and their
different types of food, cooking methods and
eating patterns. It was a fun day and the food was
delicious. All the guests and students had a great
time. This wouldn’t have been possible without
all of the time and help that Ms Lennon gave to
our class.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
CREATIVE WEBSITES
Year 12 Interactive Media students worked tirelessly to design and create business website
prototypes for clients in Semester I. Students had the opportunity to discuss the client’s
requirements at a meeting prior to commencing the project. This dialogue provided students with
important information that guided their design and production of the website. At the completion
of the task, the clients revisited the College to view students’ work and provide valuable feedback
on their efforts. The students are to be commended for their motivation and the standard of
submitted work for this authentic task. This opportunity has been made possible by the following
people, who have generously given their time to discuss their website requirements and
provide feedback on the students’ efforts: Ms Alessandra Hardwick and Ms Judy Elliott (Daylilies
Western Australia), Ms Cassandra King (Musica Lingua), Ms Katy Fiora (Custom Trikes Australia),
Mr Dom Papa (Music Studio) and Ms Edie Cernotta (Rustique Home and Garden).

Lasallian visitors
De La Salle College Football Team Visit
A group of twenty five footballers and four staff arrived on Wednesday, 27 June, to spend a week with us. For most
of the group it was their first time in Western Australia and definitely the first time being billeted by our host families.
Their trip included visiting Kings Park, our beaches, the shopping precinct in the city, and the West Coast Eagles training
facilities. They also trained with, and played a match against, the highly rated Clontarf Aboriginal College’s team. On
Monday afternoon, 2 July, we prepared to take on the De La Salle team, on a very wet and water logged oval. The
game was called off due to an approaching thunderstorm. Their stay culminated with an official dinner after the match
in the Laurence Murphy Hall, followed by
the presentation of the Brother Eric Piggott
Perpetual Trophy, presented to the Captain
of their team. The best player trophies went
to Matt Wall, from De La Salle College, and
Simon Parry, from La Salle College.
Mr Joe Sorgiovanni
VISIT BY BROTHER MICHAEL BROUGHTON fsc
On Monday, 23 July, La Salle College staff had the privilege of working
with Br Michael Broughton fsc as he explored the Lasallian charism
and outlined both historical and contemporary views of St John
Baptist de La Salle.
Br Michael has spent nearly a decade as the Auxiliary Visitor
(Provincial) of the De La Salle Brothers in Singapore. For much of
this time, Brother Michael was also the Vice Principal of his old school,
St Joseph’s Institute (SJI), with responsibility for Student Development.
Early this year we hosted a visit by six staff members from SJI.
Until recently, all Catholic schools in Singapore have been under
a significant influence from the government, through funding
arrangements. One of Brother Michael’s most notable achievements
has been the setting up
of Singapore’s first truly
independent Catholic school,
St Joseph’s International. He
is a recognized authority on
the life of the Founder (St
John Baptist de La Salle) and
regularly leads pilgrimages
to France so that lay people
committed to the Lasallian
ethos can share in the
Brothers’ special story.
12
ST JOSEPH’S INSTITUTE, SINGAPORE
Teachers from St Joseph’s Institute, Singapore, visited the College on an educational
programme for one week last term. During their time, the teachers visited
classrooms and shadowed staff from the College to gain an insight into Catholic
education. The teachers also visited St Brigid’s College and New Norcia.

Lasallian Youth Gathering 2007
Between 6 and 10 July, the two Christian Ministry leaders of the Student
Representative Council of La Salle College, Thomas Marcinkowski and
Samantha Monterio, accompanied by Mr Alfiero Cardona, joined almost ninety
students from other states in Australia and New Zealand, for a Lasallian Youth
Gathering in Melbourne.
During these four interesting days students had time
to learn more about the different missions that the
brothers provide within the District of Australia, New
Zealand and Papua New Guinea. It was an opportunity
to better understand the charism of the community
and discover how Lasallians are reaching out to
thousands of people. Students also had a chance to
meet and listen to the community’s provincial (or
Brother Visitor) Br Ambrose Payne fsc, who explained
the different assignments of the Brothers in the District
as well as the challenges they are facing today. One of
the most captivating talks came from Br Paul Smith
fsc, who helped the students enter into the world of poverty in Papua New
Guinea, where the Lasallian Brothers run an institute for children who have
been struck by HIV, most of whom are waiting for their demise.
These few days helped the students to realise that their connection with
the Lasallian community does not end at Year 12. The Brothers are inviting
students to join in one of the five programmes they have tailored for students
who would like to continue working with, and for, the community. These
programmes vary both in length and the levels of commitment young adults
are ready to offer.
Most of all, however, this experience was powerful because it gave students
an opportunity to realise that being Lasallian is not something particular to a
country, state or suburb. To be Lasallian is to be
part of a large global network of people who
are ready to follow in the footsteps of St John
Baptist de La Salle to serve the least, the lost
and the last, as our Lord Jesus Christ did.
Living with the Brothers, and other students
from all over the district was an exciting and
fascinating experience which strengthened and
revitalised the spirit of all those who are
working within this community. In many ways it
was a moment to stare in awe at the hundred
fold harvest which this community has reaped
after this one man, St John Baptist de La Salle, accepted to cooperate with our
Lord Jesus and help in sowing a seed more than three hundred years ago.

St Stephen’s and St Andrew’s Singapore
Schools Music Tour 2007
On Tuesday, 5 June, during lunch in the Auditorium, the College was treated
to amazing performances by the children from St Stephen’s Brass Band and St
Andrew’s Wind Band. They were on a music tour of Western Australia and with
St Stephen’s being a Lasallian school, they came to our College to perform their
amazing repertoire. These students are all in primary school and are extremely
talented young musicians. The students here at the College were amazed and in awe
of the amount of talent in the band, especially as they were only of a primary school
age. They were under the guidance of their Band Master, Mr David Glosz.

NEW ZEALAND WINTER TOUR
On Friday, 13 July, forty one students and four teachers embarked
on our winter wonderland journey to New Zealand. Making our
way to Sydney, we had a quick stop over before we continued on to
Christchurch. After visiting the Antarctic Centre, we made our way to
the YMCA where we were situated for two nights.
The next day, we traveled around Christchurch to see the views that it
had to offer. We had a Chinese banquet after which we visited St Mary’s
Parish where we attended Mass. Our next destination was Greymouth.
Along the way, we stopped to see our first bit of snow and had our first
of many snow fights. We also went through the town of Springfield which
was celebrating the arrival of The Simpsons Movie and the uncovering of
the big pink donut. That night for dinner, we enjoyed the traditional and
very yummy icecream from New Zealand, Hokey Pokey ice cream. This
was to become a regular treat!
The next day we toured and panned for gold at Shantytown and then
traveled to Franz Joseph Glacier where we went on a helicopter ride
to the top of the glacier. Our next stop was Fox Glacier, where after a
welcomed dinner of hot soup and a BBQ, we went for a walk to see the
Glow Worms. It was bitterly cold and walking through the forest in the
dark required us to trust the person in front of us to avoid dangerous
situations. We all survived intact!
On the way to Wanaka the next morning, we stopped off at Lake
Matheson to take pictures of the reflection of Mount Cook on the lake.
Upon stopping for lunch at the Salmon Farm, it was realised the bus
had broken down and our half hour lunch break turned out to be a
four hour stop over! Luckily for us, the Salmon Farm had a great Café
and logwood fire to keep us warm while the bus was repaired. That
night saw us arrive late at Wanaka, so fish and chips for dinner was very
welcome.
The next morning was an early wake up call for a fun-filled day’s skiing
at Cardrona Alpine Ski Resort. Italian pasta night was a success and
despite our exhaustion after the skiing, the Talent Show brought many
laughs and applauses.
Day Seven commenced with a visit to a 3D Maze, Puzzle and Illusion
Centre and then off to the Bungy Bridge over the Kawarau River.
Fourteen tour members braved the cold conditions to bungy jump!
Our next stop was Arrowtown, seen in The Lord of the Rings. The
next morning was spent shopping, playing mini-golf and horse-riding for
some. Our one hour jet-boating experience was one to remember. A
quick change of clothes and we were off to the Skyline Restaurant via
the Gondola with some amazing views of Queenstown. We enjoyed the
luge and dining through five courses. Some of the more adventurous
ones in our group took to the bungy bridge by night!
The following day we began our long trip to Timaru for our Maori
cultural exchange evening. Along the way we visited Cromwell, city
of the huge fruit and Alexandria, where we got to witness the most
fantastic frost on the trees, giving it the appearance of snow. Once
we arrived in Timaru, we were summoned onto Maori sacred ground,
enjoyed a traditional Hangi meal and then sat back and enjoyed some
great Maori singing and dancing. The boys learnt the Haka and the girls
the Poi. At 9:30pm we farewelled our hosts and continued towards
Christchurch arriving at 12:30am. After a few hours’ sleep, it was off to
the International Airport, leaving New Zealand at 7:00am and getting
into Melbourne early in the morning. After a four hour stop over in
Melbourne, we continued our journey home to Perth.
An exhausting, but fantastic time was had by all. We will certainly never
forget our New Zealand winter adventure. Our thanks to the teachers,
Mr Gill, Mr Velardo, Ms De Filippi and Ms Langdon for a life-time of good
memories.

STAFF
Mr Wayne Bull
At the beginning
of this year the
Director of Catholic
Education invited four
outstanding principals
- three primary and
one secondary to mentor developing
principals and also assist in conducting
Principal Reviews. In deciding who
to select, the Director considered,
among other things, principals who are
dedicated to their work, committed
to Catholic Education, are well
respected among their colleagues and
demonstrate excellence in the areas
of Theological, Educational, Pastoral
and Administrative Leadership.
It will come as no surprise to you that
when the Director was seeking such
a high calibre person, he did not have
to look further than the Principal of
La Salle College - Mr Wayne Bull.
Mr Bull, congratulations on being the
only Secondary Principal selected
for this important task and we
hope that you find this experience
both personally and professionally
enriching.
