I have a friend who, for the sake of discussion, we will call Ev. Ev is in his mid 80’s now and has
solidified his views on a number of things that may be germane to our Club. You might say he has
simplified some of his thinking over the years, but, simple or not, I believe he has some points worth
considering. For example, Ev has a sure-fire formula for making money: Buy low, sell high, and do
it in volume. Simple, instructive and precise.
Ev is an outdoor’s man and has been all his life. He has flown airplanes, raced boats, been a
commercial fisherman and general entrepreneur. He has made money, spent money and knows the
difference. He seems to have that prophetic insight that allows some people to see opportunities and
move forward when others balk. It’s certainly not revelation, but more of a clear understanding and
assessment of what one is looking at. To that point, Ev will simply tell you that: You cannot get
peaches off an oak.
I have never worked for Ev and it is likely that I never will, but I do recognize a few people who have
and they all seem to have profited from the experience. Again, clearly stated and fundamentally
forthright, Ev’s work-incentive program says: If you work hard, you get to keep your job. It has a
certain ring to it, a kind of panache like elegant penmanship on a paycheck, a final flourish on an
endorsement or John Hancock’s signature on the Declaration of Independence.
Independence, that is at least part of what we seek at the Fond du Lac Yacht Club. We wish to be
free to follow the wind, ride the waves and toast another beautiful day. Of course, as Ev might say,
There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch and the squeeze is on. If you have bought a gallon of gas
in the past few days, you know where I am going with this. While we have had a fairly good first third
of the year, the trend over the past couple years has been for the cost of goods sold across our bar
to increase which decreases the profit and pinches the budget. The admonition to buy low, sell
high and do it in volume does not work very well for us. First of all, it has been said that boaters are
notoriously cheap—strike one. Second, our volume is generally limited to our membership and
guests with certain impediments to rapid expansion—strike two. And three, the cost of goods and
services keep rising.
There are no plums to be plundered, peaches to be plucked or oaks to be felled to fill the coffers.
Money does not fall from trees unless we are lumber barons and most of us are not. What we are is

a club and that means it is up to us to support it. We need to frequent the facility; lend ourselves to

the camaraderie; spend time, money and effort to keep the wheels of club commerce turning. There

are only two ways to beat the budget: one is to raise prices while the other is to increase the volume
of sales. Happy Hours, Rock-the-Docks and leisurely evenings on the deck will all contribute to the
Harbor Hotline/Webmaster cause this summer. I hope you will too!

The Fond du Lac Coast Guard Auxiliary will be
offering courtesy boat safety and legal compliance
inspections on the following dates and locations:

This FREE SERVICE is provided to you by the
USCG Auxiliary and can show you where you may
have issues with safety on your boat. This check
may save your life. Upon passing inspection, a
vessel inspection check sticker will be awarded to
you for display on your boat.
Summer Storage Applications
We still have a few spaces available for Summer Dry
Storage. Boats must be less than 20 feet. Forms can
be found in the dinning room at the Club or Online.
Payment must be made with the application along with
all other requested information.
Overnight Dockage Available at the FDLYC!
The Club has two or three spaces available for
overnight dockage (depending on length of the boats).
However, at this time, we do not have a reservation
process and the spaces are on a “first come, first
served” basis. Please respect the “occupied” signs if
they are in place. Additional dockage arrangements
can be made through the harbormaster at 920-9065096. While on the water, use channel 16 on your VHF
radio to contact the harbormaster.

Brief Explanation of VSC Required Items:
❏ 1. NUMBERING: The boat’s registration number must be permanently attached to each side of the forward half of the boat characters
must be plain, vertical, block style, not less than three (3) inches high, and in
a color oontrasting with the background. A space or hyphen must separate
the letters from the numbers. Place State validation sticker according to State
policy. (e.g. FL 1234 AB or FL-4234-AB)
❏ 2. REGISTRATION/DOCUMENTATION: Registration
❏ 8. SOUND PRODUCING DEVICES: To comply with Navigation Rules and for distress signaling purposes all boats must carry a sound
producing device (whistle, horn, siren, etc.) capable of a 4-second blast audible for ½ mile. Boats larger than 39.4 ft. are also required to have a bell
(see Navigation Rules.)
❏ 9. NAVIGATION LIGHTS: All boats must be able to display navigation lights between sunset and sunrise and in conditions of reduced visibility. Boats 16 feet or more in length must have properly installed, working navigation lights and an all- around anchor light capable of
being lit independently from the red/green/white “running” lights.

❏ 5. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS: Fire extinguishers are required
if one of the following conditions exists: 1) Inboard engine(s); 2) Double
bottom hulls not completely sealed or not completely filled with flotation
materials 3) Closed living space 4) Closed stowage compartments that contain flammable materials or 5) Permanently installed fuel tanks. Recreational
boats less than 26 feet, and propelled by outboard motors are NOT required
to have fire extinguishers unless one or more of the conditions (2-5) listed
above applies. NOTE: Fire extinguishers must be readily accessible and
verified as serviceable.

free from fire hazards, in good overall condition, with bilges reasonably clean
and visible hull structure generally sound. The use of automobile parts on
boat engines is not acceptable. The engine horsepower must not exceed that
shown on the capacity plate.

Electrical and Fuel Systems: The electrical system must be
protected by fuses or manual reset circuit breakers. Switches and fuse panels
must be protected from rain or water spray. Wiring must be in good condition, properly installed and with no exposed areas or deteriorated insulation.
Batteries must be secured and terminals covered to prevent accidental arcing.. If installed, self-circling or kill switch mechanism must be in proper
working order. All PWCs require an operating self circling or kill switch
mechanism.
Fuel Systems - Portable fuel tanks (normally 7 gallon capacity or less)
must be constructed of non-breakable material and free of corrosion and leaks.
All vents must be capable of being closed. The tank must be secured and
have a vapor-tight, leak-proof cap. Each permanent fuel tank must be properly ventilated.

VENTILATION: Boats with gasoline engines in closed compartments, built after 1 August 1980 must have a powered ventilation system. Those built prior to that date must have natural or powered ventilation.
Boats with closed fuel tank compartments built after 1 August 1978 must
meet requirements by displaying a “certificate of compliance.” Boats built
before that date must have either natural or powered ventilation in the fuel
tank compartment.
I - VIII. RECOMMENDED AND DISCUSSION ITEMS:
(Not required for the award of the “Vessel Safety Check” decal). For the
very best boaters, we recommend these additional items. Meeting these requirements reflects your concern for Boating Safety.

Fox River Navigation System Authority, Friends of the Fox, Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway
The Fox River Navigation System Authority are at mid-point in the process of returning the locks operational and are
taking the necessary steps in securing the future of the former lock keepers’ residence. Presently work is in progress at
the Kaukauna Locks. The Aquatic Invasive Species barrier at Rapide Croche are making great progress in their
planning stages along with a plan for AIS training center, open to the public. The Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway is
rehabilitating four lock houses, which were once occupied more than 25 years ago. Each house will be renovated to
correspond to the time period in which it was built ranging from 1892-1927. These houses once renovated will be open
to school tours and overnight vacationers. Restoration at the Cedar Lock House, built in 1927 has begun. Each of the
four lock houses are listed with the National Register of Historic Places. The FWHP are asking for construction
volunteers, donations of furnishings during the period of 1892-1924 and storage space needed for accumulated
furnishings. Please support the Friends of the Fox on June 1st for “Cruise the Locks”. Starting at AYC 8:30am,
continental breakfast 9:30am, annual meeting 11am with captains meeting to follow, Noon 1st lockage to Sunset Park

Wisconsin Department of Transportation-2013 Bridge Operation and Lock Schedules
For the four bridges in Oshkosh (Main Street, Oregon/Jackson Street, Wisconsin Street and Congress Avenue) and the
Winneconne Main Street Bridge, the operational hours will be 8:00am to 12:00-midnight from April 19th, to October 6th. As in the
past there will be restricted operation hours for Oshkosh bridges on Monday-Friday to avoid undue conflicts with the street traffic
during the following time periods:

(12:45pm to 1:15pm)
(3:00pm to 5:00pm)
For the two bridges in Menasha (Racine and Tayco Street), the operation hours will be 8:00am to 12:00-midnight on Friday
through Sunday and 10:00am to 10:00pm on Monday through Thursday from April 19th, to October 6th. Operating hours on
Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th and Labor Day, Monday, September 2nd will be from 8:00am to 12:00-midnight as on the
weekends. Menasha bridges are now automated from Racine Bridge. NOTE: Racine Street Bridge will NOT be operated
on September 22nd from 7:30am to 1:30pm to accommodate the Fox Cities Marathon Route.
During the off-season, all operable bridges in the system can be opened if at least twelve (12) hours notice is given. Railroad
bridges and highway lift bridges can be operational and available in non-operating hours prior to April 19th and after October 6th.

The circulating pumps have been installed. The new north pier has been
replaced and has been installed.
Building Committee: Chuck Westby
The fans in the four bathrooms are in need of being replaced. We will be
working on this project in the coming weeks.
Grounds Committee: Randy Veeser
We are looking for people to sign up for grass cutting. The list is short a few
people this year. Grass cutting includes edging the lawn as well. Hanging
baskets have been installed from our friends at Botanicals. We have also
installed a watering system to keep them looking great!
Pat Whealon Travelift: Chris Romuald
The shrink wrap will be picked up very soon. Thanks for your participation in
this process. Thank you to everyone that stored at the Club for getting your
boat in to the water on time. Finally, a very special thanks to Pat Harshbarger
and Dave Rosenthal for all their hard work in putting that boats back in to the
water.

A sympathy card was sent to Buck Mabry on the death of his wife, Geraldine;
to Denis Schmitz on the passing of Geraldine Mabry; to Mike & Leslie Benson
on the death of their granddaughter, Sydney Angle who was killed in the
Oklahoma tornado. Please contact Ann if you know of someone in need of
“Sunshine”.
Kitchen Committee: Joel Crouch
Members are failing to clean up after themselves. Please remember that you
MUST clean up after yourself. If you see something that needs to be
addressed, please let Joel know and he will see what he can do.

Hosting a Large Outdoor Event?
With the addition of the new readers on the
bathroom doors, you will need to request a
code for the outside bathroom doors. This
should only need to be done in a few
instances but should be considered for
regattas and other events.
Have You Expired?
Obviously, we do not mean you “personally”.
Rather, we are speaking about your bar
tenders licenses.
The FDLYC will reimburse you if you take a
class and get a bar tenders license. You can
take the class at Moraine Park Technical
College or online. There are three places
online to take the course. They are:

Just take the class, get the paperwork filled
out with the City of Fond du Lac, and submit
the receipts to the treasurer for the club to
reimburse you for your expenses.
Wireless Internet in Marina
The FDLYC will continue to offer free Wi-Fi in
the yacht club building. However, the City of
Fond du Lac is in the process of adding Free
Wireless Internet in the entire marina with
future expansion to Lakeside Park. We are
just now getting information from here and
there but the towers/radios are installed and
broadcasting. Check it out. :-)
Attendance Prize
This month’s attendance prize winner was
Larry Blattner. It was $20.00. Please remember to wear your name tags for the extra cash!

We are kicking summer off right!

Our first Rock the Docks event will
