365 GAY DAYS OF
TEXAS FREEDOM
TEXAS - All 365 days of 1983 were
enjoyed by gay men and lesbians in the
State of Texas without the burden of
21.06 hangi ng over the gay lifestyle. It
was the first complete year of freedom
from that section of the Texas Penal
Code which had outlawed homosexual
conduct. It was the first complete year
that Texas homosexuals were legalized,
that they were not deemed lawbreakers
simply because of their lifestyle-their
sexual preference.
Because nothing can truly change until the laws are changed is why TWT
NEWS has selected gay legalized freedom as the top story in Texas of 1983.
The freedom from legal bondage actually began on August 17, 1982, when
Federal District Judge Jerry Buchmeyer
struck down 21.06, declaring it unconstitutional.lt was on that day that Texas
became the twenty-sixth state in a growing list to legalize homosexuality.
However,' the fight in the courts actually started years earlier, when the
Texas Human Rights Foundation was
formed with its primary purpose being
to change the state law. Plaintiff Don
Baker, a schoolteacher from Dallas, had
agreed to file suit. His trial came on June
15, 1981. However, it was not until 14
months later that a final verdict was
TWT DECEMBER 30. 1983 - JANUARY
S. 1984
handed down in favor of gays.
But, even after Judge Buchmeyer had
made his ruling, there were still roadblocks being thrown up to overturn the
judgment. Within two months, on October 28, Potter County District Attorney,
Danny E.Hill, had appealed thedecision.
Hill's appeal was followed by then-Attorney General Mark White's legal concern.
Why did White appeal 21.06? Senior
lobbyist for gay rights in Austin, Bettie
Naylor, explained to TWT NEWS, "I think
he [White] felt an obligation as attorney
general to appeal that law, just as he did
other laws and challenges to the Texas
Constitution. He felt he didn't have
much choice, since he was the attorney
generaL"
However, on March 11, 1983,the newly-elected attorney general, Jim Mattox,
dropped Hill's appeal of 21.06. It is important to remember that Mattox took
many political risks in deciding not to
appeal. "His courage is applauded," remarked the late M. Robert Schwab, then
president of THRF, adding, "Maddox
took the correct step, both morally and
legally."
It was after Mattox's November 1982
election as attorney general, that
Schwab had pred icted to TWT NEWS that
"Mattox would likely drop the state's appeal of 21.06"-and he did.
Thus, 21.06was obliterated, once and
for all. Its obliteration was celebrated on

the anniversary of the Buchmeyer decision. On August 17, 1983, the gay community of Dallas presented its first annual Texas Freedom Festival, to mark
the 365th day of homosexual freedom.
Dignitaries and gay leaders from across
the state came together to share in the
historic moment.

TEXAS GAY LOBBY
BATTLES FOES
TEXAS - With the 21.06 victory still
fresh in Texas history books, another
fight to save our freedom was already
building in the 1983session of the Texas
Legislature.
No sooner had we won one battle,
that another had loomed. No sooner had
21.06 been declared unconstitutional,
that 21.38 was fired at us in a volley of
homophobia.
State Representative Bill Ceverha, a
Republican from Richardson, Texas,
had introduced a new anti-gay sodomy
bill last winter, during the 1983 Legislative session. Ceverha wanted to make
certain that since 21.06 was then adead
issue, Texas did not go without any antigay law on the books.
Thus, he hurriedly concocted House
Bill 21.38. It would have torn down the
very things that had just been accomplished in defeating 21.06. Its language
was harsh and crude; its purpose was
to once again take away our newly-acquired freedom.
It was because of the gay lobby in
Austin, the Lesbian/Gay Rights Advocates, that the bill was stymied in committee and never came to a vote on the
floor of the Legislature. Ceverha tried to
wrap the emotion of the AIDS issue
around his bill to build sympathy and
support, but it failed, in spite of the
much publicized attention given to the
Dallas Doctors Against AIDS group.
Why did Ceverha introduce HB-21.38?
"It's strictly my personal speculation,"
Bettie Naylor, senior lobbyist for LGRA,
said, "but there is no question about the
fact that the man really does havea problem with homosexuality.
TWT DECEMBEA 30. 1983
- JANUARY
5. 1984
"There were a few other legislators
like Hollowell from near Waco who joined Ceverha, but he [Ceverha] was the
main catalyst," Naylor explained.
Looking back on the 68th session of
the State Legislature, it can be recorded that no anti-gay legislation was allowed to pass into law. Our gay lobby was
extremely successful on all fronts in
1983.
Aside from sidetracking HB-21.38,
LGRA also killed a bill which would have
required VD testing for all citizens,
helped keep the drinking age from being raised to 21, helped keep popper
aromas legalized in Texas, and helped
keep the gay lifestyle from being infringed on by narrow-minded house bills.
Governor Mark'White does not want
to have to deal with bills like HB-21.38,
LGRA has assured. "He [White] is a good
man for Texas gays and lesbians to have
as governor ofTexas, " it has been proven,
opined LGRA.
News Story #3
TEXAS GAY VOTE
GAINS MORE CLOUT
TEXAS - In 1983,gay voters in cities
like Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio, demonstrated that when our community votes together, we have much
strength, enough strength in fact to get
pro-gay, pro-human rights candidates
elected to office. Voting together is
known as bloc voting.
Ever since the late 1970s, politicians
in Texas have become increasingly
aware that a gay endorsement is a ticket
to ride to victory rather than a kiss of
death. Each election year, more and
more candidates come before our local
political organizations seeking the gay
community's endorsement.
1983was no exception. In fact, theexceptions became the rule.
In San Antonio, the newly-formed
Alamo Human Rights Commission endorsed a staunch advocate of human
rights, Orlando Garcia. On November 19,
Garcia galloped to victory in his bid for
a Texas House seat, with a 72% plurality.
PAGE 13
lOPM SATURDAY
In San Antonio's April 2 city election,
AHRC had made its first endorsements
and won big. AHRC had endorsed such
victorious candidates as Maria Berriozabel and Bernardo Eureste for San Antonio City Council. Eureste's opponent,
Jesse Valdez, had even appeared on
local television doing some gay-baiting.
He labeled the man who was to beat him
in an April 16 runoff as "queer." Later,
however, he apologized sincerely to
AHRC.
Although AHRC did not officially endorse Mayor Henry Cisneros, his 94.1%
landslide mandate was heralded as a victory for human rights.
In Austin, the ALGPC was able to
again count many winners in its victory
column in last spring's city election.
There was, however, a controversy in the
mayor's rac'e and considerable confusion in one Austin City Council race.
In the April 30 runoff, ALGPC supported, but didn't endorse, Ron Mullen,
who was elected mayor over Lowell
Lebermann by 52.6%. ALGPC, although
pleased with the Mullen victory, had not
officially endorsed the winner. "The vote
in the ALGPC about the mayoral race
was between endorsing Ron Mullen, or
making no endorsement at all," Mary
Summerall had told TWT NEWS. "The majority of those in attendance had voted
to make no endorsement. Meanwhile,
many of the city's leading gay clubs had
visibly thrown their support behind
Lebermann.
Those same clubs and gay businesses had also thrown theirsupport behind
Mark Spaeth for one of the six Austin
City Council positions. Spaeth was on
record "for being sensitive to all the interests of the community."
But ALGPC also made no endorsement of Spaeth for Place 4, deciding instead to endorse Leda Roselle. Thus,
there was no real gay bloc vote in Austin, as the community lay divided. The
vote, as expected, also divided and the
race was thrown into an April 30 runoff.
ALGPC-endorsed Rosell did not even
make that runoff. So, ALGPC switched
their endorsement to George Humprhey

not endorsing frontrunner
Spaeth.
In that runoff, Spaeth trailed most of
the night, but pulled ahead in the end
to win by a slim 50.6% margin. ALGPC
critics cite the fact that the caucus had
twice endorsed a loser in the same race.
In Dallas, a similar story brewed in a
similar city council election on April 2.
DGPC had voted to endorse incumbent
Ricardo Medrano, rather than challenger
Paul Fielding. Yet some opponents of
DGPC supported Fielding. The community was split, and so was the vote.
In fact, the entire race was thrown into
a tense runoff on April 16. And, as was
true in Austin, the gay-endorsed candidate, which was Medrano, lost.
Fielding in Dallas, like Spaeth in Austin, was a supporter of gay rights, but
like Spaeth, had also not sought the gay
endorsement. Yet he won, if only by a
slim 52% margin.
DGPC explained later to TWT NEWS
that redistricting in Oak Lawn had given
the caucus reason to believe that District 2 no longer contained their central
core of gay voters.
As fate would have it, another similar
story brewed in Houston, in the November 8 election. Once again, a city council race was at stake, just like in Austin
and Dallas. Once again, both candidates
were pro-gay, pro-human rights. And,
once again, just as in Austin and Dallas,
the gay-endorsed candidate lost.
The heated race between the winner,
Anthony Hall, and the loser, Nikki van
Hightower, found sectors of the gay
community divided over whom to support. Although van Hightower carried
the gay precincts of Montrose, Hall won
City Hall. Hall had cut over 25% into the
Houston gay bloc vote.
However, it was the only race where
a GPC-endorsed candidate lost, because Mayor Kathy Whitmire and City
Councilmembers
Eleanor Tinsley,
George Greanias, Judson Robinson, Jr.,
Jim Greenwood, Rodney Ellis and Dale
Gorczynski-all
GPC-endorsed-won.
Yet in spite of the many 1983 gay
political victories in Austin, Dallas and
PAGE 15
Houston, there is considerable concern
in each of these cities that the political
process of endorsing candidates needs
to be reexamined.
For a gay political caucus to lose a
crucial battle in one Texas city could be
called circumstance. But for it to have
happened in Texas' three most politically active cities in one year, opens the
door to self-introspection.
Something has happened. A trend
has shown up on the graphs of gay bloc
voting.
That something is this: The days of
having only one pro-gay candidate run
for a particular office are over. As our
clout grows, more and more pro-gay candidates will surely seek our support.
The city council decisions made in
1983 in Austin between Spaeth and
Roselle/Humphrey; in Dallas between
Medrano and Fielding, and in Houston
between Hall and van Hightower, are
minor confrontations-although
bitter-when compared to the even greater
choices facing gay bloc voters in 1984.
Let us hope that we have learned in
1983 what we will have to deal with in
1984.
Let us not burn political bridges that
we may have to recross. Let us not tear
down one of our political friends in order
to build up another.
Who is to say that the victors-nonALGPC-endorsed Spaeth in Austin, nonDGPC-endorsed Fielding in Dallas or
non-HGPC-endorsed Hall in Houstonwill not serve our interests well on city
councils in their respective cities.
For this to have happened to our gay
vote in three Texas cities in the same
year indicates that it is a point that
needs to be addressed immediately. In
spite of all our many victories in the
political arena, we cannot allow even
one single race to divide us.
Clearly, we need to fine tune our political caucuses and how we endorse
and conduct ourselves in our campaigns
for "our friends." If we don't modify our
political handlings of such situations,
then the candidates will surely modify
it for us, and take our leaders down in
unpopularity.
PAGE 16
TWT DECEMBER 30. 1983 - JANUARI'
5. 1984
In 1984,we need to make aNew Year's
resolution to not allow ourselves to
again divide ourselves. Otherwise, we
leave ourselves vulnerable to dividing
our highly-publicized gay bloc vote.
News Story #4
GAY STUDENTS
MORE ORGANIZED
TEXAS - If there ever was a shortage
of top notch leaders in the maturing gay
communities of Texas, it was in 1983.
That is why the formation of more and
more gay student groups on our state
college campuses has become so important.
For it is true that tomorrow's teachers
and leaders are the students of today.
From these newly-inspired campus
groups, surely more leaders of the gay
rights movement shall emerge.
In 1983,a landmark meeting was held
in Dallas on June 24-25, when 13 different campus organizations
from
across Texas met for the first time to
form the statewide Texas Gay and Lesbian Student Organization Coalition
(TGL,SOC).
The coalition pledged to keep its promise of helping fledgling gay student
organizations form on Texas campuses.
TGLSOC also established a task force
to deal specifically with relationships
between universities and their gay organizations.
The latest members to join TGLSOC
were the Lambda Christian Fellowship
of Brazos County at Texas A&M, and
Gays of Angelo State (GAS), which is in
the process of seeking recognition by
the school.
As the old year was ending, the new
University of Texas at Arlington Gay/
Lesbian Association was approved as
an official campus organization. The
vote was 8 to 1 in favor in the easy decision.
Approval, however, was still pending
at two other state colleges. After seven
years, Gay Student Services (GSS) was
still awaiting approval by Texas A&M
University at College Station. Their case
TWT DECEMBER 30. 1983 - JANUARI'
5. 1984
has been batted around in the courts for
far too long.
Also bogged down in their attempt to
become officially recognized was the
Gay and Lesbian Support Organization
(GLSO) of Southern Methodist University. After three appeals to the Student
Senate, the group's highly-publicized
case was still pending.
College groups among the approved
and faculty-annointed included at year's
end UT's Gay Student Association of
Austin, Gay/Lesbian Association of Denton, Gay Academic Union of North
Texas, Lesbian/Gay Resource Services
of the University of Houston, Rice Gay/
Lesbian Support Group, and the Gay/
Lesbian Associated Students at Stephen F.Austin College at Nacogdoches.
February 5, 1984 will mark the firstyear anniversary of the initial meeting
and formation of the statewide TGLSOC, which is acting as a protective umbrella, shielding our campus organizations from legal flak and peer persecution.
News Story # 5
STILL NO CURE
FOR AIDS
TEXAS - TWT NEWS would have liked
to have made the AIDS story the top
story of the year. But that won't happen
until a cure is found. Hopefully, next
year, the AIDS health issue can advance
to the top of the yearly news report by
proclaiming an end to the mystery.
Until then, acquired immune deficiency syndrome; hence the acronym AIDS,
will continue to be the major health concern of the gay community. If in 1982we
came into shock and fear over AIDS,
then in 1983 we advanced to come to
grips with its ramifications.
In 1982, five Texans died of AIDS. In
1983,that many died the first month. Nationwide, nearly 3,000 cases of AIDS
have been counted by year's end at the
Center for Disease Control. Of that,
about 41%-over 1,100-had resulted
in death.
Fortunately, the fatality rate in Texas
has remained much lower. Nationwide,
PAGE 17
•
•
•
••
·EW
•
Texas has only accounted for less than
5% of all AIDS cases. In 1983, Austin
had only two fatalities, San Antonio
counted three, Dallas figures indicated
about a dozen deaths, and in Houston
-the state's highest-the figures were
hazy because of delayed reporting, but
indicated nearly two dozen deaths.
Thus, in Texas, not only was the caseload lighter, the fatality rate also lagged
the nationwide statistics, according to
1983 figures.
In 1983we also learned that AIDS was
not purely an American disease. Thirtytwo other countries have been affected .
"It's a global health threat," medical experts now say. Outside of the United
States, Western Europe is the hardest
hit-especially
France and Western
Germany.
After extensive research, doctors still
do not know how AIDS is transmitted
from one individual to another. Although
various forms of treatment have been
successful on over half of the cases, no
one single cure-all has yet been found.
Texans, probably more than any other
people in the nation, have come to grips
with AIDS better, by putting the mystery
into perspective. Panic has subsided
and logic has prevailed.
Thanks to the efforts of the AIDS Action Project of the Oak Lawn Counseling Center in Dallas, the SAFE Week
Committee of San Antonio, and the KS!
AIDS Foundation of Houston, programs
for treatment, help, counseling, feeding,
transportation, nursing, doctor referral
and peer support have been instituted.
Such organizations have also been
pivotal in raising money for local needs,
and lobbying to get more money allocated from city health budgets for research and treatment.
Hopefully, 1984 will be the last year
doctors will still refer to AIDS as a
"mystery killer." Hopefully, in 1984,our
prayers will be answered and the cause
and cure of AIDS will be reported, putting an end to the disease, once and forever.
Happy New Year from TWT NEWS!
Texas.

1983'5 B~SlBOOKS
by David Fields
The books that appear on this list are
here for a variety of reasons. Some are
simply entertaining, and all good at what
they set out to do. One novel is written
by a professor of medieval French literature in Mexico City. Books of satire, a
gay cookbook (done up just right), books
of a personal nature, personal issues
and spiritual issues are included.
It is difficult to say which is the top
book of 1983,because most are samples
of the best of a particular subject. Some
are books you will not find on the bestseller list because of the explosion of
good gay books in the last several years.
A list of ten does not begin to suggest
the quality, diversity and volume of
books available.
As I mentioned in one review in the
last year, everyone has different standards of what makes a "good" book, and
preferences as to what they would like
to read. So it is possible your favorite is
not among them. There are many "bests,"
and I have chosen these ten as a sampler, in no particular order.
Death Trick by Robert Stevenson-a
detective mystery; well-crafted, with witty, intelligent and strong gay characters;
good plot.

Here we are at the end of another action-filled
year.
As is customary, I give a quick run-down on who did what and how they did it during the past year. This always gets me in trouble, but, hey ... I'm used to it. These
are strictly my personal opinions and observations.
If you like them, wonderful. If
you don't, buy me a cocktail before you read me to filth! That way I'll have something
to throw!
Onward through the fog!

DAVID
HOUSTON
By Dean Malone
in Houston along with other places. I
make my home in Louisiana because my
father is a direct descendant of Sam
Houston and my mother is a direct
descendant of Robert E. Lee. My people have lived here since 1830. My
parents and ourfamily are stilled based
here."
When asked about his New Year's Eve
show in Houston at the Brazos River
Bottom, David disclosed, "I'll be doing
two forty-five minute sets with the
Mustang Band. I think it will be fun. I'll
get to do songs I can't sing on the Grand
Ole' Opry." When pressured for an example, David replied, "Oh, songs like 'I
Gave Her the Ring and She Gave Me the
Finger' and 'Big Legged Women Keep
Your Dresses Down'. The last line of that
song goes, "Cause you got somethin'
big mama, make a bulldog love a hound.'
Get the picture?"
Yes we do! Sounds like a good 01'
country time.

COVER PROFILE
ROOMMATES
Growing up in the Sixties and Seventies, I thought roommates were
something college students needed in order to move off campus. This
was just another stage in "growing up," getting married, and entering
the "real world."
Then I grew up, my marriage failed, and I found out the "real world"
wasn't so simple. After I came out, I realized that roommates could
be the alternative to loneliness, and not necessarily a temporary alternative. Being cut off from family who don't/won't understand and coworkers I couldn't confide in, led me to discover that there was life
between being single and being married.
Finding an ersatz family in friendship and co-habitation may have
been a hippy fad of the Sixties, but for gays it has always been a
necessary lifestyle. Some of us are loners and some married, but a lot
of us find the family we need in roommates. At least we can thank the
Sixties forteaching us that adults, male and female, could co-habitate
without a total breakdown of morals.
Pictured here and on the cover are my three roommates, Chris Alexander (right), Larry Jones, and Fran Davis. Chris is art director at a
Medical Center hospital where Larry also works as a press operator
in the print shop. Fran is an illustrator for a large corporation; her specialty is operating a computer graphics system.
Together we have shared a home for nearly two years, yet we still
like each other. Sure, we have our differences, and each of us needs
his or her "space" now and then, but this holds true for any family.
Only difference I can see is that in our house we have a democracy
where we all share decisions and responsibilities (and get cranky with
similar equality).
I feel lucky to have met friends I feel comfortable sharing my home
with; I met them right here in Montrose where we live. To hell with
anyone who thinks being 30 and having roommates is weird. This is
1984, baby!

TWT Sports Annual Year-End Wrap-Up
\Iint9ullD
~~
d:~~t:I1mil
Since the emergence in TWT Magazine of a regular weekly sports page at the turn of this
decade, gay sports in Texas has grown, flourished and been nurtured by both fans, sponsors,
businesses, and an increasing array of participants.
In 1980,bowling and volleyball were topping the list of activities. By 1981, tennis and softball
hadorganized. In 1982, the coming-out experiences of several prominent national sports figures
inpro football and pro baseball gave the local gay athlete a new self-image, a proud purpose.
By 1983, all major cities in Texas-Austin, Fort Worth, San Antonio and Corpus Christi-were
as competitive and organized as their forerunners in Dallas and Houston. Theconcrete formation
of Sports Associations and Sports Committees has added to the cohesive spirit of competition
across Texas!
Here, season-by-season, is a compendium of Texas Gay Sports as chronicled by TWT SPORTS.

SUMMER
Forthe fourth year during Gay Pride Week,
theMontrose Sports Association provided a
day of sports pride and competition. In
previousyears the MSA All-Stars had either
played the policemen or the firemen. This
yearit was different. It was all gay! Houston
vs.Dallas!
OnJune 18, four games were played. In the
first of women's doubleheader games,
Houston's WSL All-Stars played the High
Country All-Stars of Dallas and shut out
Dallas 23-0. In the second women's game,
Houstonagain shut out Dallas in a game betweenthe Briar Patch Renegades of Houston
and the Unicorns of Dallas. Thus, Houston
wonthe gay pride doubleheader in women's
play.
In men's competition, the story was different. Houston won the first game; Dallas
took the second. In the opener, the MSA
North All-Stars trounced the Oak Lawn AIIStars,13-3. In the second game, however, the
DallasAll-Stars edged by the MSA South AIIStars9-8.

daysas teams from all over America came to

For the second consecutive year, Dirty Sally's won the MSA Men's Softball League

The final game was a replay of the last
three years as The Galleon and Dirty Sally's
had once again found themselves one game
away each from a championship. In the 1983
rubber game, Sally's trounced the Galleon
14-2,placing the shipmates in second place
for the season.

8dETEOR SHOWERS: The first meteor shower of the new year will occur next
Thursday, January 4,198'4 producing approximately 100 shooting stars per hour.
The January 4 phenomenon is called the Quadrantid~eteor
Shower.
This meteor shower will occur because the 'Earth will pass through a place in
space where it will travel through a huge swarm of tiny pebbles which are called
meteoroids. When the 'Earth passes through the Quadrantid swarm, these tiny
pebbles will burn up in the atmosphere. When they catch fire, they can then be

&1eteors actually occur at any time of the day or night but they are best observed
