Therapy Center Nature’s Edge Notes from Our Director Spring is finally here and we are really enjoying the beautiful weather at Nature’s Edge! Here are a few quick notes on some of the things we’ve been up to and our summer programs and fundraisers . . . . . Our Youth Program This year’s Youth of Promise Program begins on June 14. We are excited to welcome back our great YOP staff: Jessica Bartsch, Lucas Anderson, Samantha Zimmer, Kayla Zimmer, and Tasha Schwab. The group will be holding a plant sale on August 6 from 10 am to 3 pm and on August 16 we will hold an open house to recognize our volunteers and our youth from 4 to 6 pm. Hope we will see you there! Successful Workshop The American Hippotherapy Association sponsored a workshop at Nature’s Edge, “Equine Skills and Treatment Principles.” Pippa Hodge and I conducted the Level 1 workshop on May 13-16 with over 20 Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapists from all over the United States attending. Many thanks to Pippa (pictured below). We so enjoyed having her here! Fundraiser at Chetek Lanes Reminiscing on the Farm Thank you to the The Helen Bader Foundation who has generously provided $5000 this year to offer an experience for senior citizens living in our community to come to Nature’s Edge for our “Reminiscing on the Farm” program. We will have 3 groups; our first group was advertised through Thomas Landing in Rice Lake, and two other groups are being arranged through Memory Care group and the Barron County Office of Aging. Fundraiser Held A Walk/Run Fundraiser in Bruce, WI was held this past Saturday, May 22 and we are so appreciative of our wonderful supporters who came out to raise money to further our mission. Many thanks to each of our participants and to all those who pledged. Awards were given for first, second and third place. Education Every two years the faculty of the American Hippotherapy Association meet, and I will be attending this meeting in September in Lexington, Kentucky. Also, on November 11 -13, I will be giving a presentation on Hippotherapy at the Autism/Asperger Symposium in Minneapolis. Volunteer of the Year? We Sure Think So! We are pleased to announce that Roy Mortenson, our board member and devoted volunteer, has been nominated for the NARHA Regional 6 Volunteer of the Year Award! We are anxiously awaiting news, and are so proud of Roy’s hard work and appreciative of his dedication to Nature’s Edge. page 2 We’ll be hosting a fundraiser at Chetek Lanes on August 13 from 9 pm. to 2 am, featuring the talented Retro Soul 5, a group of seasoned musicians who reside in the Twin Cities metro area and have a passion for making good music. They have played their style of blues rock inspired originals combined with family friendly good time oldies from the 60's, 70's, and 80's which includes R&B favorites such as Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, and Marvin Gaye, as well as old time rock and roll from The Beatles, Johnny Rivers, and CCR. Please join us for some fun and great music! Gone too Soon With sad hearts, we say goodbye to a sweet little boy who had been receiving therapy at Nature’s Edge. “Brextin was a beautiful little boy who left us way too early. He was born with many health issues resulting in respiratory problems, and epilepsy. Throughout his many battles with these illnesses, Brextin was a very strong boy who had the love and support of many great family members.” We at Nature’s Edge offer our sympathy to Brextin’s family! ~ Becky We’re Excited to Announce . . . Occupational therapy is: "The therapeutic use of work, self-care, and play activities to increase development and prevent disability. It may include adaptation of task or environment to achieve maximum independence and to enhance the quality of life." (American Occupational Therapy Association executive board, 1976). One’s occupation can be defined as the way in which one occupies time. Thus, time is divided into three categories of activities which one takes part in daily: Self-care (sleeping, eating, grooming, dressing and toileting), Work (effort that is exerted to do or make something, or perform a task), and leisure (free, unoccupied time in which one chooses to do something they enjoy).
