A Story of Quality

PORTUGAL
In northeast Portugal, the Douro Valley’s revered Ports have a rich
history that extends back for centuries. Fonseca, Taylor Fladgate
and Croft trace their lineage back to 1815, the late 1600s and
1500s, respectively. The Douro Valley contains over 40,000
hectares of steep, terraced vineyards, each rated on a quality scale
of A-F according to altitude, aspect to the sun, varieties, soil, vine
age and other criteria. The Marão and Montemuro mountains
protect the region from the Atlantic’s humid west winds. The
climate’s cold winters and hot, dry summers along with the stony
and schistous soil provide excellent conditions for wine growing.
Though Port is usually made from six grape varieties (Touriga
Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca
and Tinta Amarela), over thirty varieties are authorized. The
traditional winemaking practice of foot treading is still used to
craft the finest Ports.
