Welcome to the Australian Ireland Fund’s annual Melbourne Lunch at Zinc at Federation Square – and thank you
for your continuing support for a Promising Ireland. I also thank, on your behalf Head Chef Jimmy Ujgunovski and
his team at Zinc for preparing a delicious feast, fit for this great occasion and beautiful Yarra side location. Enjoy!
As you know Ireland lost its Poet Laureate, Seamus Heaney. From Anahorish, Co. Derry, Northern Ireland, Seamus
was a true friend of, and inspiration for, the Ireland Funds throughout his lifetime. His loss, too early at the age of
74, was keenly felt within the global Irish community.
What makes this poet so beloved and relevant to us in the Australian Ireland Fund is the way in which Heaney,
from a Catholic nationalist background, used his word-craft to explore the strife and uncertainties of his troubled
homeland, while managing simultaneously not to lecture and not to take sides. His inspiring poetry presaged the
Good Friday Agreement:
History says, Don’t hope
On this side of the grave.
But then, once in a lifetime
The longed-for tidal wave
Of justice can rise up,
And hope and history rhyme.
(‘The Cure at Troy’ 1991)
A lot of work has been done by a lot of people in the 17 years since the Belfast Agreement was signed to ensure that
the ‘hope and history’ continue to rhyme for Northern Ireland – reconciliation of British-Irish relations reaching an
all-time high with President Michael D. Higgins’ historic meeting with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace on
8th April last year and more recently the visit of Prince Charles to Ireland.
And yet Northern Ireland’s imperfect peace is just that; imperfect. Sectarian strife continues to exist in the workingclass enclaves of Belfast, Derry, and Omagh, and other parts of the region have also witnessed sporadic violence
in the past 12 months. Writ large is the inconvenient truth that reconciliation of the two communities in Northern
Ireland is an intergenerational challenge needing our constant attention and support.
In that context, I’m particularly proud of the contribution towards building a permanent peace in Northern Ireland
made by the Australian Ireland Fund over the past decade. Together with Lady Mary Fairfax, we have invested
over $1.3 million of your philanthropic dollars in Integrated Education in Northern Ireland; the most recent being a
grant to Drumragh Integrated College in Omagh. Indeed we were proud to host former President of Ireland Mary
McAleese in Sydney in September last, a native of Belfast who has made an impressive contribution to the Peace
Process. On behalf of the Fund Mary McAleese presented the Bird and Bell award to Lady Fairfax to recognise her
generous contribution to reconciliation in Northern Ireland.
Others committed to the success of Northern Ireland are stepping up on the economic front too. Persistent peace
has attracted upwards of US$2 billion in foreign direct investment in the past five years. Whether social or economic
investment, our collective support for a Promising Ireland is key to its success. Our persistence will be richly
rewarded.
On his deathbed, Seamus Heaney sent a comforting text message in Latin to his wife, Marie. It read “noli timere”
which means “do not fear”. We should heed to his last inspiring words.

While Ireland is now well and truly on the long and difficult road to economic recovery, the not-for-profit
sector is now critical to maintaining the country’s social fabric. Yet, in light of Government cutbacks, demands
on their services are overwhelming. It is in response to this gaping social need that the worldwide Ireland
Funds launched Promising Ireland, a campaign with an ambitious goal of raising $100 million by the end of
2013. Given the campaign’s phenomenal success (more than $180 million to date), the goal has been revised
to $200 million by the end of 2015.
With your help, the Australian Ireland Fund (AIF) is playing its part in the Promising Ireland campaign. In the
last twelve months we are supporting four flagship projects including Barnardos Loughlinstown – a familyfocused early intervention initiative in one of Dublin’s most disadvantaged suburbs assisting 240 children
and families; Junior Achievement Ireland through which 685 students in nine schools in Cavan, Monaghan
& Sligo will undertake an entrepreneurship programme; and the Suas Literacy Support Programme which is
assisting 1,475 8-14 year olds from disadvantaged communities in Louth and Westmeath.
While the Northern Ireland Peace Process remains the most resilient and successful case of conflict resolution
in today’s troubled world, it is still a work-in-progress at community level where breaking the intergenerational
cycle of sectarian prejudice is essential for long-term peace. The AIF continues to support initiatives to
promote integrated education, where still only 7% of Northern Ireland’s Catholic and Protestant children
are educated together. Together with the Sir Warwick Fairfax Trust, we are currently assisting Drumragh
Integrated College in Omagh with much needed extra classroom space for an additional 70 children.
In pursuit of integrated education on our own doorstep, the AIF has completed a five-year commitment to
fund eight scholarships in leading Australian schools for indigenous Australians. The good news is that the
Australian Indigenous Education Foundation has received federal government funding which enables them to
receive dollar-for-dollar supplementation for the funds we have contributed.
The wonderful education those of us from Ireland got has been a passport to opportunities for ourselves
and our families in Australia and around the world. The AIF’s targeted charities are a way for us to make a
difference in the lives of people less fortunate than us by giving them the key to opportunity that is education.
The Young Leaders Network continues to go from strength to strength, including here in Melbourne,
providing a platform for young professionals to connect with likeminded Irish-Australians in Victoria while
advancing the cause of the AIF. Two very successful events were held recently including hosting the coach of
the winning six nations Irish Team Joe Schmidt, footballer Damien Duff and Chairman John O’Neill AO in a
remarkable sporting panel and an event to raise awareness of Soar, an Irish project inspired by local sporting
legend, Jim Stynes and Reach Foundation.
Finally, what these pages cannot tell you is the great joy and the sense of hope that our grants give to our
recipients. Nor can they adequately convey the debt of gratitude we owe our supporters for their financial
contributions to our projects. Our work would not be possible without your help.
