2014 - Wakefield Education Foundation
A Worldwide Warrior Community - Alumni, Staff, Parents, Friends Warrior News FALL 2014 Providing Scholarships - Connecting the Warrior Nation - Preserving History Integration of Wakefield Project Call for Hall of Fame Nominations The primary purpose of the Wakefield High School Education Foundation is to provide scholarships to graduating seniors at Wakefield. Established in 1987, the Foundation has been able to award over $1.6 million to 321 scholars. The Foundation also connects the Warrior Nation and preserves the history of Wakefield. As part of that last function, a project was started in 2012 to capture the history of the racial integration of Wakefield in the early 1960s. The last Hall of Fame Induction yielded a great group of new members. The Ceremony had the most honorees and the best alumni attendance. We hope to do even better this year. The 2015 Induction to the Hall of Fame will be the first in the new building. We will have a significantly better facility to welcome and showcase our Hall of Fame members. Beginning in the fall of 1962, nine years after Brown v. Board of Education and four years after the Massive Resistance laws in Virginia were declared unconstitutional, the first African American students enrolled in Wakefield. By the fall of 1964, Hoffman-Boston High School was closed and the black students attending it were sent to Wakefield and Washington-Lee. About 250 HoffmanBoston students in grades ten through twelve were assigned to Wakefield, which had a population of over 2,500 that year. Much has been written about the four students who integrated Stratford Junior High School, but less effort has been made to capture the history of others who integrated schools in Arlington. Their stories are interesting and dynamic. A series of oral history interviews were conducted. Research was done on the history of segregation and integration. Black Wakefield alumni visited with current-day Sociology students at Wakefield. The end result is a book that captures those stories and conversations. It includes the reflections of twentyone people; a record of the conversations the alumni had with the Sociology students; photos from the Wakefield 1962 – 1965 yearbooks, the period of integration; and a timeline of events surrounding integration. Individuals in the “Reflections” section include: George Richardson (staff), Glen Bayless (’64), James and Howard Bregman (’60 and ’64), Deborah Carpenter Brittain (’66), Isaac Brooks and Toni Clark Brooks (’65), Randolph Clark (’65), Robert Eldridge (’66), Preston H. Green (’67), Maynard Haithcock (staff), Jacqueline Kenney Peyton and William Peyton (’66), Raymond Leak (’67), Kevin Mannix (’67), Clayton Powell (’65), Larry Randall (’65), Bill Ricks (’64), Walter Schulte (staff), Joseph Smackum (’66), Al Smuzynski (’65) and, Lynn Taylor Nelson (’62). The book is available for a donation of $25. An order form is available at wakefieldalumni.org on the memorabilia tab. The final date for the Ceremony has not been determined, but we expect it to be in late May or early June of 2015. Consequently, all nominations should be submitted by February 1, 2015. Nomination forms and guidelines are available on the Wakefield Alumni website - http://wakefieldalumni.org/hof. html. Submissions may be made online or by mail. As always, past nominations are included for consideration by the selection committee. So, re-nominations with additional supporting information are a good idea. If you have any questions or need any assistance with a nomination, send an email to the Hall of Fame Committee at [email protected] or contact David Mitchell ’65 (Chair, Hall of Fame Committee) at 207 S. Jackson Street, Arlington, VA 22204. Forms can be mailed to the Foundation at PO Box 41675, Arlington, VA 22204. Data Data Data The Foundation maintains a database of almost 25,000 records. We use this information to help with reunions and share news about Wakefield. We use it to mail this annual newsletter each fall and to send ENews electronically about four times a year. Thanks to the work of Rich Lyons ’60, we have done a large review of our database. Using all kinds of tricks, he has tackled the database class by class to get updated information about the alumni, staff and friends in our database. That only helps us find mailing addresses, not email addresses. Please let us know your email address. And, if we’ve made a mistake, let us know that. Dealing with so many entries, we sometimes have to take a leap of faith that we have the right name and address and that the person is part of the Warrior Nation. Elora Smith Kilgore, Clayton Powell, Deborah Carpenter Brittain, Larry Randall, Jackie Kenney Peyton, Randy Clark and William Peyton met at Hoffman-Boston for a photo shoot before being recognized by the Arlington School Board for their part in the Integration of Wakefield. Wakefield High School Education Foundation, Inc Class News ALL Classes – The Wakefield Band Program is inviting all band-alumni back for a great reunion concert and event! On the weekend of May 15 and 16, 2015, Wakefield will host its first ever Band Reunion and Concert. It is time to dust off those old instruments and chops and come back to play with your friends! The tentative Schedule is for a Friday evening (5/15) rehearsal followed by a reception, a Saturday morning (5/16) rehearsal and a Saturday Night Concert. Come make music with old friends and meet some new ones! They are looking for volunteers to help plan the event. For more info or to volunteer your help, please contact Band Director Denny d’Alelio at [email protected] or visit http://tinyurl. com/whsbandalumni. 1956 - Those of us in the FIRST graduating class from Wakefield High School are so proud to be a part of the history of our school. We continue to cherish our friendships from so long ago. Perhaps email is helping us keep in touch. Many classmates are asking “Are we going to have a 60th Reunion?” Well, why not? Save the date - October ??, 2016 (exact date to be determined). Please remember to send me updates of yours and your classmates’ addresses, emails, and phone numbers. We would love to have current pictures of what you are doing to put on the website. - Kris Frank Falcon, kfalcon@ comcast.net or phone 703-743-1443. 1958 - The class of ’58 had a mini reunion at Sunset Beach, North Carolina on the first weekend in September 2014. Many thanks to Frank and Elyse McLearen. Thanks to Roberta “Birdie” Marchant Jennings for all the email roundups! Folks came Thursday to Sea Trail and had drinks and snacks at Frank’s before going to dinner. Friday they went to the beach, swam or shopped. Some of us shared condos. Scott and Kathy Daniel, Susan Sanders Hill (with books on her trips and art glass), Joy Toadvine McDonald (with bike to ride), Pat Dix Sher, Dick and Jackie Ward, Keggers and Sissie Simpson, Charlie and Nancy Whitney Vickers, Ronnie Lee, Ron Terwilliger (who flew in and was met by Ronnie Lee), Keith and Judy Betts, John Thompson and his friend Sarah, and Susan O’Hara Christopher partied Friday night. The dinner was a catered dinner at the Pink Palace (fried chicken, ribs, potatoes, beans, cake, etc!). By Saturday, more folks arrived. Miles and Evy Kay Sandin with friends Harriet and Noel Pinkard (who went to VMI with our classmates). Saturday night we heated up the leftovers and had the fire department come because the alarms went off. We really have hot parties. Our website (jamesrbrett. com/WakefieldHS58/58frontpage.htm) has pictures. Our class is hoping to have more mini reunions in other areas of the country. We can go by bus, train, plane or cars. Our plans will be on our website. Our scholarship fund for the class of ’58 is managed by Arlington Community Foundation which now gives $1500 for a Wakefield scholarship. – Susan O’Hara Christopher WakefieldAlumni.org Check it out! 2 1959 - On Saturday, September 27, the Wakefield Class of 1959 held its 55th Reunion. Forty-nine classmates and twentyone guests celebrated at Clyde’s at Tyson’s Corner. Thanks to Edy Rogers Bulthies who took on the challenge of organizing the reunion. She did a wonderful job of getting things done and coordinating the event. Dan Kramer arranged an excellent dinner and breakfast on Sunday. Tom Rowlett, the class webmaster, provided music for the evening. Pat and Steve Arntson created the name tags. Stuart Steel, Ginny Jacobs Seacrist, Barbara Selfridge and others contacted many of our classmates and invited them to the reunion. Parker Deal set up a memorabilia display. Tom Dunn served as the photographer. Again, thanks to Pat and Steve for creating and updating the “In Memory Boards” which honors the seventy classmates who have died. The highlight of the evening was “Open Mike” time. Attendees were invited to share remembrances and stories about our time at Wakefield. Many in the Class of ’59 entered Wakefield the day it opened, as seventh graders, and then graduated six years later. There were many funny stories. One or two classmates reflected on the changes in our world since we started at Wakefield. Others paid tribute to the staff and faculty who guided and helped us get ready for the future. One classmate said he did not realize how well he was prepared for college until he entered his freshman year. That sentiment was echoed by others. Many said that faculty members encouraged and challenged them to value their education. The values, taught at Wakefield, still resonate with them today. Most classmates commented on how much they enjoyed the reunion, the sharing of stories and renewing old friendships. Many of those friendships go back 65 years. By all measures, the Class of 1959 had a very successful reunion. Folks are already planning the 60th reunion. - Tom Hawkins 1960 - The Reunion Committee is in the planning stages for our Class of ’60 55th reunion scheduled for October 9, 10, and 11, 2015, the Columbus Day Weekend, at the Hilton Washington Dulles Hotel next to Dulles Airport off of route 28. Details about how to register will be forthcoming. Now would be a good time to make some comments about what you liked about the 50th reunion and what didn’t work for you. The Committee often works in a vacuum on these matters and could use a little guidance. So don’t be bashful, come right out and say what you would like and not like. The 7th annual Sarasota Spring Break Mini-Reunion will be held May 7-10, 2015, a prelude to our 55th Class Reunion that Fall. The Mini-Reunion is also known as “Ken’s Party in Paradise”, a relaxing and entertaining chance to walk in the sun and visit with old friends. The 7th annual gathering in Sarasota will be more of what it’s been in the past - another fabulous several days getaway to great spring weather in beautiful settings. You can contact any member of the Reunion Committee to express your thoughts. You can find their contact information at http://wakefieldalumni.org/classes/1960/ index.html. You can also contact me at 101 Glasgow Court; Stephens City, VA 22655 or 540-869-2283 or rwlyons2001@ yahoo.com. – Rich Lyons Warrior News 2014 Class News 1963 - SAVE THE DATE! SATURDAY, APRIL 11, 2015 - Most of the Class of ’63 turns 70 in 2015. We’re planning a mini-reunion to get together and celebrate this event. Details will follow. To send details we need any changes in your contact information. You can send that to [email protected] or to Susan Saulmon Trice at [email protected]. - Susan Trice 1964 - The class of ‘64 had a very successful 50th Reunion in September. The weekend included a Friday Meet and Greet, a bus tour of Arlington, a chance to play golf, a Saturday night dinner and a Sunday picnic. The committee produced a book filled with history, photos, profiles and more. To get a copy, contact Joyce Mills Wofle at [email protected]. 1965 - We are doing the preliminary ground work for a 50th reunion to be held sometime in 2015. If you have received a post card or an email - PLEASE respond to us. Remember that “no” is a valid response. We also need to validate that we have a contact address for all of our class members. Contact me at [email protected]. – John Abbott 1967 - The Class of ’67 is well-represented on both the class reunion website, classreport.org/usa/va/arlington/whs/1967 and also on Facebook. The classreport site is primarily for reunion planning and messaging and is maintained by Jessie Bradley Knapp and Karen Roos Sikorski, your liaisons with the Alumni Association. Virginia Castlen Vertiz hosts a Facebook group, Wakefield High School 1964-1970 that is great for keeping in touch, discussions, and planning mini-get-togethers. It also has lots of pictures. Bookmark both of these and check them often. We are definitely planning a 50 year class reunion in 2017. We are working to update our class information and would appreciate it if you would take a little time to review not only your own information on the classreport site but also to look at the missing and deceased lists. We welcome any corrections and additional information you can provide. Email addresses are especially wanted as the price of postage makes snail mail very costly. It was great to see the Class of ’67 well-represented at the Wakefield 60th anniversary party in 2013. Classmates attended the all-decade dance, the school Open House, and the ’65-’67 mini-reunion. Check out the pictures on the Alumni Association website! We send all of you wishes for health and happiness, and we hope to see you at the 50th Reunion in just a few more years. If you would like to send us private messages (as opposed to posting on websites), we may be reached at: Jessie: [email protected], Karen: KRSfromVA@aol. com or Both: [email protected] - Jessie and Karen food, beverages, etc. will be provided via our Facebook page. We do not intend to send out mass mailings via the USPS nor via email. Tickets will be available at the door the night of the event payable by cash only. – Alan Steele 1980 - The Class of 1980’s Reunion Committee warmly invites all our fellow classmates to celebrate OUR 35th Reunion on the weekend of July 10-11, 2015. We kick off the weekend on Friday, July 10th at O’Malley’s Pub at the Crowne Plaza Tyson Corner Hotel for a rousing ice breaker. (All classes are welcome and no cover charge). On the morning of Saturday, July 11th we will tour the new Wakefield building and do lunch at a South Arlington restaurant. On the evening of Saturday, July 11th, we will be bringing our memories and dancing shoes to the Grand Atrium in Vienna, VA for a memorable Dinner Dance at this beautiful two-story venue. Tickets are only $75 per person for hors d’oeurvres, full dinner buffet, dancing and open bar. If you’d like to serve, let us know at information@ wakefieldalumni.org. Want to Volunteer? Check out our needs at wakefieldalumni. org/volunteer.html Is One the Loneliest Number That You’ve Ever Heard? Every year, Peter Arntson ’56, founder of the Foundation, studies the list of donors and always comments on the number of new donors. This year, we asked him why. His answer is below. Of course it is very encouraging to see the names of those who have contributed for a number of years. We have a solid base of Wakefield alumni and friends who give each year. But it really helps to see new names followed by a “(1)” being added to the list of supporters. You may ask why? And the answer is that they are first time contributors to the Foundation who have decided to join their classmates and the other supporters and have decided to add their names to our joint efforts to help at least some of the students attending our old school to be able to pursue their educational goal of attending college. Those contributors identified with “(1)” indicate that our base of supporters is growing. Remember that everyone initially was a “(1)”. Obviously we hope that in future years those number “(1)”s will become “(2)”s, “(3)”s, etc. It is only by attracting new supporters that the Wakefield Foundation will grow and be able to help more students. So, if you have not contributed before please consider doing so this year. Any amount no matter how small is greatly appreciated The Wakefield Foundation, and the Wakefield students, need all of the help it, and they, can get. So please be a part of it! - Pete 7 Wakefield Scholars After selecting a class of scholars, each class is assigned an alumni-contact who follows their progress through the life of the scholarship. At the end of each semester, the scholar sends a letter and a copy of their grades for that semester to the contact. The alumni-contact then follows up with a letter to the scholar. Since Peter Arntson ’56 created the Foundation, we’ve given over $1.6 million to 321 Wakefield Scholars. In 2014, we committed to give $10,000 to students attending four-year schools and $4,000 to students attending the Northern Virginia Community College after they graduated from Wakefield. We also awarded $4,000 to two students who have finished at NOVA and are going on to complete their education at a four-year school. The scholarship amount is distributed by semesters. You can see the large number of folks who help us help these students with their donations, large and small, in the Honor Roll of Donors. Being selected as a Wakefield Foundation Scholar is considered to be a great honor among the students at Wakefield. To see a full list of all Wakefield Scholars, go to WakefieldAlumni.org. We’re proud that we’ve been around long enough that some our scholars are now our donors. Class of 2011 Class of 2013 $140,000 Given Number of Scholars: 5 NoVa, 15 four-year, 5 one-time grants $146,000 Given Number of Scholars: 9 NoVa, 15 four-year, 3 one-time grants All of the 2011 scholars are doing well and, with one exception (due to family problems, not academics), are on track to graduate next spring. This past semester was one of pushing the boundaries of comfort - all the scholars added to the normal course load by taking extra classes, in several cases in addition to the added responsibilities of jobs and course related activities. It is not surprising that they all did well, and learned that when they push themselves and focus on a goal, they can make it. To a person, all of the 2011 scholars thank the foundation for their support, because without us, some of them would not be college seniors. – John Abbott ’65 Maybe the best way to share an update about the 2013 scholars is to share some quotes from the letters I received. One scholar wrote “I want to reiterate my personal thanks to the trustees of the Foundation as well as the entire Wakefield community who support the Foundation through its contributions, for continuing to support me as a recipient of one of the 2013 scholarships. The funds received for my second term have significantly contributed to my academic success in college by partially alleviating the burden of tuition and other expenses, such as pricey textbooks and dining expenses.” Another wrote “My family and I are really grateful for the financial support that we received from the Wakefield Education Foundation because it truly made a difference in my college education!” And, another wrote “I’m currently working on my first publication titled The Gift of a Disability. The book is written as a personal memoir in conjunction with some of my research findings. Academically it has been a very challenging and busy year but I have managed to do well and maintained my GPA. I have demonstrated the knowledge and leadership that Wakefield prepared me with. It has allowed me to be successful academically.” - Catherine Wilson ’63 Class of 2012 $138,000 Given Number of Scholars: 8 NoVa, 14 four-year, 4 one-time grants At the end of the second year of college, the 2012 scholars report a variety of experiences. One has finished his pre-med coursework and is taking the MCAT this fall. This same student is an undergraduate teaching assistant and tutors as well while maintaining his Dean’s List status. Others have found the rewards of service to others while also maintaining their places on the Dean’s List. One student has become the Philanthropy Chair of his pre-law fraternity and worked to raise money to support ALS research (pre-buckets of ice water). Another student is hoping to advance her major in South American Studies by studying abroad next year. Having completed more coursework, several students have changed majors and are already pursuing part-time jobs or volunteer opportunities in their new areas of interest. Several Scholars had difficult times with loss and illness and report, that with help and support, they are back on track and looking forward to this new school year. Even with these difficulties, looking at their transcripts, they worked successfully to maintain their academic progress. Most of the NOVA scholars completed their two-year programs. One student, who completed her associates program early, applied for and received the new NVCC Continuing Scholarship and is pursuing her four year degree at VCU. All the Scholars express their continued gratitude for the Scholarships they have received. To quote the student taking the MCAT this fall, “I promise to work very hard and to give back to Wakefield at some point in my life.” - Millie Mohler Lawson ’63 8 Class of 2014 $145,500 Given Number of Scholars: 5 NoVa, 2 Post NoVa, 12 four-year, 5 one-time grants As the 2014 Wakefield scholars begin their college lives, they take with them diverse interests but many of the same goals. Five of them will stay close at NOVA, ten more will stay in Virginia, five will travel to other east coast campuses, and two will head for California. Their current goals include majors in law, medicine, business, engineering and the arts. Almost half see their futures including international relations or community service. Wakefield has prepared them well; the Education Foundation will help them fulfill their dreams. - Peggy Linden Johnson ’66 Your Contributions Make All Our Work Possible. John Wertime (’59) wrote to us about his classmate’s book. John says it contains sixty pages of aesthetic delights and cultural insights that few publications can match. Andy has been a longtime resident of Japan and is a wellknown photographer. According to John. This book is not only a visual treat, but an astute introduction to the Japanese love of nature, ritual, and color, as well as their refinements in living, dressing, and building. A Google search will produce reviews of the book and an App on ITunes. Linda Ciccolella Marchman (’70) has written a book, Gone Astray about a cat that is shuttled around as a kitten, winds up in an animal shelter, runs away and faces rejection and abandonment, encounters some of her former friends, and experiences unbridled joy and contentment in her travels. You can also visit www.socialbtrflies.com to find out about Linda’s butterfly business. If you want to keep up with the many accomplishments of Laura’s Arabians, you can view their web site, ladamasarabians.com. Bill DeCosta (’63) is not idly sitting around in his retirement. He has written a booklet titled “Hoboes and Tramps in the 1890’s: Washington , D.C.” In 1895, there were 4,137 vagrants committed to the Work House in the District. Some said that conditions there were worse than the city jail. In January 1899, for instance, there were 314 inmates for 216 beds. Bill talks about the different areas where these people had camps in the area, resources that were established to help them and how they were dealt with in the legal system. As part of his research, Bill identified 3,000 individual homeless people from this period and turned that information over to libraries. His pamphlet lists some of the more colorful. John Kelly of The Washington Post wrote about Bill’s book and research in his August 11, 2014 column. According to Kelly, Bill became enchanted with this lifestyle when he was a boy and his mother brought home a book for him from the library called The Jungle. His mother thought it was about animals or Tarzan. Little did she know that it was about “jungles”, which is the name for the makeshift camps where these people lived. The Wakefield Alumni Association has a copy of Bill’s pamphlet in their archives. Esther Greenfield (’61) writes that her book Tough Men in Hard Places has been published. It is a collection of 151 vintage photos showing how men braved avalanches, snowstorms and rugged mountain terrain to bring electric power to Colorado. It can be found on Amazon.
