Randy Bane THE REVIVAL PULPIT KNOWING M E REVIVER IN REVIVAL 'Tint I rnay !mow tan and the power of hn resurrection. and the fellowship of his suffer kigs being made conformable unto his death' (Phil 3:10) How often can I be said of us that we can't see the scenery for the trees"? Especially is this true in spiritual matters We seek the blessing but neglect the Blesser. In our churches across the land there is a periodic cry from the pulpits 'We need a reviver From time to time a prayer is heard in our prayer meetings "Lord, send a revival." i n some circles reports of "revival blessings" come to us Upon examination of most of them we find few marks of biblical andM n etintesta mpentence with ai t s and gloty of the Lord Jesus Christ There is talk t n of world. wide revival in churches that know little = or nothing of local church revival. We wish for n revival in our churches corporately. yet so few b i brevival l i c in their personal lives Could it be know e p we are looking in the wrong direction? t =How are we going to have the burden and passion that has always marked revival praying? Are concerts of prayer for revival a likely pot sibdity in our churches? We can call for prayer for revival, but It is plain that we cannot work up revival burden and enthusiasm Where do we begin? It is evident it must begin in invididuals It must begin in me. But where do I start? How doI have personal revivaP How can I become an instrument in the reviving of the Church? The answer is the Lord Jesus Christ He is the Head of the Church. the source of her life and power (Eph 4:15.16). Paul s desire, expressed in our text reveals it a t The answer is found in knowing Christ The third chapter of Philippians reveals Paul's desire for knowledge in the first nine verses the apostle compares his knowledge of Christ with He tlt:ttn himself to have gained with a knowledge of Christ loss Y e afor the excellency of the knowledge of Christ d o uJesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do courst them but b d e dung, that I may win Christ* (vs. 8). Not only s s Christ eclipse all else. but He makes all sub does asUtutes for Him to be refuse Paul repudiated the nrighteousness of the flesh (vss. 7. 8b1 and env dbraced the righteousness of faith (vas 8c, 9). IPaul forfeited all things that he might a cdate Christ and have this to be found i n f s (vs 9). oe Paul did not stop with this knowledge but r s ; utented to know more (vs 10). He wanted an nIntimate relationship with the risen Lord and tSaviour. Jesus Christ, He wished to know the aPerson elide Lord, the power et His We and lthe passion of His love. l THE PERSON OF HIS LORD. t "That I may know Him" Mote first of all die h i Importance of this statement. Paul put first things first He put knowing Christ above all things The message to us is cleat Knowing Christ must come above potec above Spirit fulness, above success even above revival We often make much of the gifts to the neglect of the Giver. In our seeking for m i ni we often miss the Review The apostle knew that if he knew Christ rightly, he would have power. Spirit fulness. success in Gods will and revival. Christ Jesus is all these things! There is no blessing short of Me or beyond had Here is a good check point for spiritual et periencea Where does the Lord Jesus Christ tit 111, 4:2. 3). There is much talk of deeper e -ences today and much said about the Holy iSpirit t p e nBut . is the emphasis upon the expert. ences the Holy Spirit or upon the Son of God? Certainly the doctrine of the Holy Spirit is a truth of Scripture and the illuminating Spirit of truth will reveal the teachings concerning His Person and work to the student of the Word But the Holy Spirit has come to testify of Christ and to glorify Him (John 16:13. 14). if Christ is not glorified the Spirit of God is not in it if attention Is drawn to self and not Christ the experience is at "best" flesh and may be demonic The same holds true for our quest for revival. Revival is Christ! To know him is to know revival Roy Hession makes this observance "is it not significant that when there is patently an at perience of revival in lives those revived do not talk about revival but rather about Jesusr The Lord Jesus Christ is Revisal. Hession states "It may be asked, are we not, then, to pray for revival? Our first tesponsibiNty is to be revived ourselves and to have a testimony that we have come to the end of our struggle and that we have as w i t h fellowship can pray that what God has done in our hearts He will do in other's hearts in ever widening circles We are not, then, praying for revival as something that has not yet come. but as Someone Who has already come to our hearts if to none others yet Revival has begun (and it has begun. even if the Reviver has come only to one heart), and it is now a matter of it spreading The beachhead for new life este!, fished in but a few hearts needs now to be extended to other hearts and to that end will God use our testimony and willingness to se* giving quite as much as our prayers Such prayers however, will be offered by those who know they have found both the Way and the End the striving and tenseness that character lee so much of our praying for revival vAll be absent and a calm confidence and boldness will take their place" Note next the intimacy in Pots statement" know Him." There are a number of synonyms Paul could have used for knowing There is oldie meaning "to perces.* intellectuallyy, COM mon knovdedge• (1 Them 4:1). Mother is epi tome* Ra t o f t or by contact' (Acts 10:20). Still another is k amdamd. n o w "to know by logical analysis" ( Eph. 517). b y But the verb he uses here is abash* experiencially" Paul wanted to know tknow ao c q u Christ by personal experience. The righteout a i of n God t by faith issues into a desire to know ness a n cmore Christ e and more. The link between int . puted and imparted righteousness is the Holy Spirit. Who leads us to Christ The apostle b wanted to know. not Just the facts about Christ, y i fLU w i t h and of Him t a concept of knowing God involved revering him rand being concecrated to Him (Pim. :7; 9: 10; n I 12). It is a personal intimate practical km spiritual knowledge Paul desired How sad that most of present day Christianity is just facts and figures ( and often iktie of true Bible facts). There is a need for sound Bible teaching and expository preaching i n our churches But few have advanced from Christ lanky indoctrine to Christianity in practice. To put k more acurately to Christ Inexperience and Christ living through us in practice Do vm imow Him? Revival is knowing the Revival Knowing Christ further implies knowing U. T H E POWER OF HIS LIFE. "Thot I may know hint. and the power of his resanaction." The hapilicadassa of this are many it means knowing Christ as Lord "Therefore let all the house of Wail know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified. both Lord and Christ' (Acts 2:36). Meeting the risen Christ in regenerating power on the road to Damascus Paul fell down before Him and and to dor (Acts It also means knowing Christ as the basis lot righteousness "Who was delivered for our offences. and was raised again for ow just* cation" (Rom 425; of11Cot 521: Col 2:12). The power of His resurrection can mean the power that raised Christ from the dead. This is the standard of power available to and operative in the believer. Paul prayed that all saints would have a full lamMedge of this power. "The eyes of your understanding being enlightened that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints. And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to ut ward who believe according to the working of his mighty power. Which he wrought in Christ. when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places' Mph. 1:18-20). In verse 19 Paul uses four different words for power. "Power is denamis. "inherent power, natural ability" ( from which we get" dynamic. dynamo. dynamite); " working" is energela " operative power"(from which we get" energy"); mighty* is thetas, " manifest strength:" and the last word. " power." is 'schuss " strength power as an endowment" Wuest translates the verse "And what is the super abounding greatness of His inherent power to us who are believing ones as measured by the operative energy of the manifest strength of His might." Talk about power! The same power that raised the Lord Jesus from the deed and set Him in the heaven lies to be the Head of ail things to the Church ( Eph. 120-23) and raised the said from his condition of spiritual death to be seated together with Him in the heavenlies (Eph. 2:1-7) is the power that is worlds. in us( Epk 320). Away with our viruses and uribekvkis accephwice of substandard Chrisdarilly! May we banish from our talk all Christ dishonouring statements. such as "We can't have revive, because we are in the last days"! There is no excuse for any Christian not to experience personal revival. The power of His resurrection can further mean the power his resurrection life givekgre powerful resurrection We H O W lie (Col 3:4; John 14:6; I John 5412). The Spire that raised our Lord from the deed dwells in us Rom. 8:1 I). and we are able to "walk in new ness of ( Rom. 6:4). It is overcoming power. The word is dunamis which we said means " inherent power." it is" power which overcomes resistance." the Lord Jesus Christ is now on resurrection ground. far beyond temptation. the world of sin, the testings of humanity To know Him in the power of His resurrection is to be living on the victory side. "Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once but in that he liveth. he liveth unto God. likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sirt but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body that ye should obey it in the lusts therof ' (Rom. 6:912). The power of His resurrection means fruit unto God as well. **Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ that he should be married to another. this man strong. whom ye see and know yea, the faith which is by him hath given this perfect soundness in the presence of you all" ( Acts 3:15. 16). "And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and they spoke the word of God with boldness. And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one souk nether said any of them that ought of the things which he poe sessed was his own; but they had al things common. And with great power gave the scot ties witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus" (Acts 4:31-33). See also Acts 4:10-1Z 5:219-32 10:38-44; 1329-39. Oh. that we might again know and tee* to Christs resit recdon life and power! But knowing Christ also denotes knowing THE PASSION OF HIS LOVE "That I may know him...and the M o o d * of his sufferings being made conformable unto his death." See what is included with cross of Christ? his lot this reason, that he wants us to see that in desiring to follow Him as faithful cross' bearers we we not left alone: He keeps fellowship with us we are not copying a dead Model but are walking in fellowship with a living Saviour" What is involved in the fellowship of His sufferings? Our Lord suffered in rejection for the redemption of lost mankind. The theme of Philippians is fellowship in the gospel (1:5, 6). Paul was concerned with the futherance of the gospel message (1:12) and minisoy (125). He exhorted the Philippien church t o stand untied for the faith of the gospel ( 1:27). Surely fellowship sidt Christ's sufferings must inciude sharing His burden for a lost world. It is a fellowship in His work Could It not be that we steno( seeing personal and corporate revival today because there is no willingness on the part of the people of God to know Christ in the passion of His love? We want the joy of Christ and the life of overcoming. but knowing Christ and power. It means suffering we do not want the cross and the burdens that go with it. W e want the blessings but not the bui r 1 1 1 1 Wowing : V e t Ow t eist and suffering with Ovid. Pew rant to pay e l l i t i l the i price of suffering and death to experience the power of Christ ( a 11 Cot t 12:930). Does it not seem strange to us to have i death follow resurrection? No this is the order of n spiritual t a i r experience. Our Lord died and rose again. We are raised to We in order to die Only the living can de We go through the empty tomb to take our piece on the cross with Him. To know Him In the fellowship of His suffer ings means "joint- partidpadom" sufferings for righteousness through identification with Christ (Cot 124; Rom. 8:17; I Cox 1 1 2428; 12: 10). Knowing Him and the power of His resurree don and the fellowship of His sufferings includes being conformed to His death. " Being made conformable" (summosphoo) denotes "to bring to the same form with some other per son." This is not just referring to physical death but Christ's idnd of death ( Phi 2:5-8). The Scripture is speaidng of self-emptying conformity to the spirit of His life and death. 11 0 Whin God Asks with revival power there is 1also 1 revival passion. We dose with the testi many of Even Roberts. the instrument mightily 1 used of the Holy Spirit in the Welsh Revival. in a 1certain morning meeting which he attended. 1the evangelist in one of his prayers besought the 1Lord that He would "bend us" The Spirit to soy to Roberts "That's what you 1seemed 1 1need, 1 to be bent" Here is the experience as he 6told "I felt a living force coming into my bosom. This grew and grew. and I was almost bursting. . My bosom was boiling. What boiled in me was the verse *God cornrnendeth His love' I fell on my knees With my arms over the seat in front of me; the tears and perspiration flowed freely I thought blood was gushing forth." Certain friends approached to wipe his face. He still kept pray ing. "CI Lord, bend met Bend met" Then suddenly the glory broke in. Ms Roberts went on "Aber I woe bent, a wave of peace come over me, and the audience sang. 'I Hear Thy Wei come Voice.'
