Mailasail Iridium Computer Setup Guide for Iridium Data Services
Version Dec-03
E-Mailing and Browsing with your Iridium Sat Phone
IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. This set-up guide assumes a Windows based PC with Windows 95, 98, win2000 or winXP.
Users of win Me, or NT should consult the set-up guide on the Iridium CD
2. The Iridium data kit supplied with your Motorola SatPhone must interface with a computer serial port. Many
modern laptop computers are manufactured without serial ports. If your laptop does not have a serial port, we have
usually been successful with a PCMCIA serial port converter (expensive), or with a USB to serial port connector
(less expensive). This guide does not show details for installing these. You must refer to the manufacture’s guide for
installing serial port converters and for setting up the serial port number.

CONNECTIONS
RS232 (DB9) serial port
USB to Serial Port converter
When phone and PC is turned OFF, connect the
RS-232 (DB-9) serial cable from the data kit
adapter on your Motorola phone to the serial
port on your PC.
If you don’t have a serial connector on your pc,
you can install a PCMCIA-RS-232 adapter, or
USB serial adapter.
RS-232 Serial Connector
Next: Turn your computer on and let it start up (for about 2-3 minutes)
IMPORTANT NOTE!
To be able to use the Data, you need a good signal strength all the time. If you are in a boat or vehicle, use the
magnetic antenna on the roof on a large grounding plate, or use the fixed external antenna, this will give you
a more stable connection.

Mailasail is constantly working to save your telephone charges. ExpressMail is a software program which

bills.

Mailasail WEB MAIL
To check your e-mails anywhere, you can access our e-mail server on the internet.
Go to: http://www.mailasail.com then select webmail
Login with your e-mail username and password from your e-mail account.
N.B. If no mail is shown, click Archive to see old mail.
This technique should be used to retrieve pictures and attachments which were
intentionally deleted by mailasail (your mailasail account normally sends only text
messages to your satellite phone).
SECTION 16
Troubleshooting
On the Iridium Data CD in Docs section you will find Direct Internet Troubleshooting help, please refer to
that info if you experience problems, below we have collected more info which we have seen helpful.
Troubleshooting Quick Check List
1. Check the signal strength, for data calls, you need a good signal strength. The antenna
must be located outside with a clear sky and not close to an Inmarsat satellite telephone
antenna or any other strong transmitting antennas.
2. If problems to get a good signal strength with the handheld phone, please use the
magnetic or the fixed mount external antenna. (option)
3. Check what type of antenna cable you are used, make sure to not exceed the
recommended cable length. Also make sure that you have the special low loss cable
installed.
4. Check what the battery voltage is, for a Euro Com fixed marine unit, the battery voltage
needs to be at least 12DV and charged.
5. The normal sized RS-232 9 pin Serial Cable CANNOT be longer than max 10ft – 3m. If
it is too long, it will begin to act like it does find the modem. For longer lengths, ask for a
special long serial cable.

LIST OF COMMON ERRORS
Error 1
ERROR
WEB Mail problems
Due to the slow connection of the satellite system, (only max 9.6kbs), it is recommended to NOT use a
web based e-mail program like hotmail-msn-yahoo-aol. The fastest and best way to e-mail with this
satellite connection, is to use only Outlook Express. Globalsatelliteusa can provide you with a own email address for using with outlook express, please call us, and we can activate a account for you.
Error 2
ERROR:
“Dial up and connect to..” etc..
HELP:
Modify e-mail account settings
When you first time connect your sat phone with your PC and you see: “You are connected” and you
go to your e-mail program, ex. Microsoft Outlook Express, and a screen pops up saying:
“Dial up and connect to..” etc.., just Cancel this window, since you are not using the dial up at all, you
are using the Apollo Direct Internet connection.
If this screen always pops up when you try to connect then you have to change a setting. Go to: Outlook

HELP:
Modify e-mail account settings
In Outlook Express when sending / receiving e-mails, there can occasionally be in some computers
tricky thing to send/receive, just hit the send/receive button several times. The used server can be
temporarily busy. It also helps sometimes to turn off sat phone and PC and try again after a moment. If
it continues, check your settings once again See SECTION and please contact the administrator for the
e-mail server you use.
-Sometimes when you have another e-mail account ex: msn and try to add another e-mail account to
use in Outlook express and it continues to send e-mails with ex. msn even it is not default, you have to
completely delete the msn account in order to be able to get the ex. Globalsatellite e-mail account to
work.
Then add It again if you need it.
Satellite connections have a slower speed than regular land based Internet connections. If you are
receiving large attachments or files to your computer via your sat phone it can take some time to
download it, and sometimes errors may occur. If you have problems with your e-mailing you can read
and reset your Globalsatellite e-mail account from any PC in the world or (Internet café) by using our
web access feature.

ERROR
INMARSAT – Iridium INTERFERENCE
Iridium antenna too close to a Inmarsat antenna.
When this problem occurs, it is attributable to the fact that the INMARSAT transmitter power overloads the Iridium receiver,
which can degrade Iridium handset performance. Hence, it is only an actively transmitting INMARSAT unit that poses any
interference to an Iridium unit. But this means, that you can have voice quality degradation and system access/call drop
degradation. Simply, the Iridium antenna must be as far as possible from a Inmarsat antenna. For more detailed info with
distances, please ask for our Iridium - Inmarsat Interference Spec Sheet.
