The Morning Line - The Plantation at Ponte Vedra
The Morning Line ● ● Dear Members, Over the past few months The Plantation Board and Construction Committees have been working overtime in an effort to bring all of the projects from the design phase to the construction phase. One of the most important steps in this process is the selection of the Golf Course Contractor. This process began with the invitation to bid, which went out to eight contracting firms. One firm elected not to bid and the seven others attended our pre bid conference this month. All of the proposals are due back on June 2nd. Once received, the Golf Course Construction Committee will perform an extensive Contractor Qualifications process which will evaluate the capability of these firms and their ability to complete the project. In addition, each bid will be evaluated individually by the committee members on the basis of 1) Ability of Personnel, 2) Firm’s Experience, 3) Understanding of the Scope of Work, 4) Ability to Furnish the Required Services and 5) Price. Once this process is completed, the Committee will make a recommendation to the Board for their selection of the Golf Course Contractor. There will be a Special Board meeting held in June to award the contract for our golf course renovation. Once the date has been selected, a notice of the special Board meeting will be published for the membership. These are exciting times for The Plantation’s future and I thank all the people who have been involved in this process. Other Happening’s Around The Planation Tennis Court Bathrooms Renovations Renovation began on the Ladies’ bathroom on Thursday and will continue till the end of June. Once completed, the Men’s bathroom will be renovated. We anticipate that both bathrooms should be competed by August. The bathrooms are being updated to meet ADA codes and will match the existing bathrooms at the Golf Shop and Clubhouse. While a bathroom is under construction, the other bathroom will be used as an unisex restroom. Movement of Clubhouse Laundry Facilities Due to the increase in usage of the locker rooms and fitness center, we had to expand our laundry facilities. The facilities are in the process of being moved to the existing Ladies’ bathroom by the turn window. The existing Men’s bathroom has now become an unisex bathroom. This project should be completed by August. Landscaping the Berm on Tabby Lane / Hollyhock Lane Now that Beaches Energy has completed their work, elacora will be erecting a wall on top of the berm and installing heavy landscaping. This project should be completed by the end of June. “Burger Night” at the Beach – Every Thursday Evening Don’t miss out on this incredible evening! Featured Wine Bonded Wine Company #9 of Napa Valley and their excellent Cabernet Sauvignon “Ghost Block.” Now on the heralded 2012 vintage, this family-owned winery continues a 100 year legacy of producing some of the finest fruit in all of Oakville. The ‘12s are easy to like and have the dual advantage of evincing some fruit purity now while rewarding for a decade or more to come. Certified organic, the family at Bonded have an equally deep commitment to their precious vineyards as well as to the quality wine they produce. Now that the wine has been allocated out it is open to the public (inventory restrictions apply) and we are eager to introduce more to this gem. With land values in the heart of Napa climbing every year, it is refreshing that a family-owned, organic, estate fruit wine can keep its price constant for successive vintages, much less 4 or 5 years consecutively. Many are craving great Napa Cabernet at the “honey hole” price of under $50 wholesale and I can’t think of a better recommendation. Rob Lawson only produced about 6600 6pks of this beauty, and I highly recommend you grab some while you can! If you are interested in this featured wine we have it in stock! Please contact Allen Dermody at (904) 543-2978 or at [email protected]. Tennis First Ever Tennis Member Guest The draw was stacked and the courts were full. The Competitive Division did not disappoint as Members did their homework and invited some good players. We had a City Championship finalist, First Coast League standouts and former college players filling the divisions. Ray Wolpert and his partner, seeded last in their division, outperformed their pre-tournament ranking finishing 3rd after the round robin and then won their playoff match. The Fun Division showed the fundamental beauty of tennis as Logan Conway played with grandfather Tom Conway and 9 year old Emma Toole played with father Dan Toole! It proved once again that tennis is a family sport; that can be shared for a life time. Dawn Deehan cruised to the finals of the Fun Division with guest Suzanne Stephens however Cristina Cush and her partner made it as tough as possible for them. Dawn and Suzanne were pushed to 3 sets before taking the victory. In the Competitive Draw’s North Division, Chuck Wilson and Scott Haines tied for the number 1 spot but Chuck moved into the championship match by narrowly edging Scott out in the head to head match. In the South Division, Grant Conway upset Matt Miller to reach the final match with his partner. Grant was running out of gas going into the final match and asked if it could be decided with a coin toss. Grant held it together in the Championship Match and beat Chuck 6-4, 6-3. He was carried off by friends and family and rushed to a therapy pool, given rehydration nutrients and is recovering. Special thanks to Chef Craig who came to the event to cookout for the Members. Plantation Book Club Treated to Michel Oesterreicher’s Book Reading and Tour of the Beaches Museum On Thursday, May 21, members of the Plantation Book Club gathered at the Beaches Museum & History Park to hear Michel Oesterreicher read from her book, Pioneer Family. Pioneer Family is a collection of stories about the Oesterreicher family in the early twentieth century. The Oesterreichers were some of the original settlers of Palm Valley. The author was also joined by several other members of her family who shared stories about growing up in the Beaches area. After the reading, the book club members had a tour of the Beaches Museum & History Park, bringing the book alive. Beaches Museum properties include the Oesterreicher-McCormick house built in 1873 by the author’s grandfather, the St. Paul’s by-the-Sea Chapel built in 1887, the train foreman’s house and the old Mayport train depot both built in 1900, a 1911 train steam engine, the original Jacksonville Beach post office built in 1903, and the museum itself which is currently exhibiting Enrique Mora’s paintings.
