About CDA
Credential 2.0
The Council for Professional
Recognition launched the revamped
and much anticipated CDA 2.0
credentialing process providing an
updated curriculum and more. Camp
Fire First Texas is THE community
leader when it comes to assisting
early childhood professionals in
receiving the BEST first step in their
credentialing process and provides
an approved course through several
workforce commissions for Texas
Rising Star programs. Camp Fire
repositioned the course curriculum
to ensure our students receive the
most up-to-date and comprehensive
instruction. Our skilled and
experienced instructors connect
current research with classroom
practices and industry leading
support materials including the
most up-to-date version of NAEYC’s
Developmentally Appropriate Practice
Book, the accompanying CD with
extra readings and classroom videos
to use as examples. Our class meets
20 times face-to-face and includes
homework assignments to meet the
120 clock hour training requirement to
receive a CDA Credential.
Be sure, during the CDA process, to
ask your instructor for a progress
letter for your file at your early
childhood center. We are happy to
provide documentation along the
way that you are working towards
your credential while also receiving
the necessary hours to meet licensing
requirements.

As you watch children grow and learn,
it is important to remember that each
child develops at his or her own pace,
and that the range of normal is quite
wide. However, it is helpful to be able
to recognize developmental delays
in young children. These delays are
significant lags in one or more areas
of language, physical, cognitive,
or emotional development. Early
identification and intervention is the
best way to help a child reach their full
potential. This session will help you
recognize subtle differences and be
aware of red flags for autism spectrum
disorders (ASD) and other development
delays. You will also participate in
activities that simulate what it feels like
to have learning differences.

A Practical Guide to
Challenging Behaviors

As toddlers work to make sense of
the world, develop relationships,
and learn to use their bodies, some
behaviors can become challenging in
the group environment. Biting and
tantrums can be frustrating. Teachers
and directors need practical solutions.
In this workshop, we will review the
developmental reasons that these
behaviors are common and how we
can adjust the environment, routines,
and interactions to reduce them.
We will also discuss best practices
for responding to the child. Effective
policies and procedures for biting, how
to communicate with parents about
toddler behaviors, and what to do when
biting becomes a crisis in the center will
be covered in this workshop.

Karen Walker
Karen Walker recently completed her Doctorate in
Education in Early Childhood Education from the University
of North Texas in Denton, and she holds a Master’s degree in
Special Education. This is her second year teaching at Texas
A&M University - Commerce. In addition she will begin a
term as Co-President of the Dallas AEYC in 2015. She has
presented at state, national, and international conferences,
including London and Nairobi, Kenya and now Camp Fire.
Dr. Walker will provide a robust set of professional development that focuses
on special education in the early childhood classroom and effective teaching
strategies when working with our youngest learners.
Dr. Denise Collins and Dawn Hallman M.A.
Dr. Denise Collins and Dawn Hallman, M.A. are Master Trainers who have been
co-presenting professional development courses together for more than 20 years.
They have presented at national, state and local conferences.
Denise holds a Doctorate in Child Development, Masters of Science and a Bachelor
of Science. She is the Director of the Office of Professional Development at the
University of Texas at Arlington and has taught extensively on the college and
university level for over 20 years.

When kids feel safe and secure, their brains soak up learning.
Children need secure attachments to safe adults and they
need help developing skills to calm themselves down,
connect with others and make good decisions.
The toxic stress that comes with living in poverty is
compromising the health of today’s children. Teachers and parents are frustrated
by the sometimes unseen factors getting in the way of kids ability to learn and
focus.
We know this better than anyone, but aren’t always sure what strategies to
integrate into the classroom to shift that reality. Michelle will discuss strategies
such as Brain Basics, Brain Breaks and more during her keynote and breakout
sessions at the Camp Fire Spring Conference. This keynote may change the
way you view the toughest kids you serve and will provide specific strategies to
promote healthy attachment and brain development with all children.

Free Professional Development
Course: Connect4Success
Young children often demonstrate
challenging behaviors. There is rapid
growth and development going in
the first five years that is exciting yet
HAND IN HAND
difficult to understand. Connect4Success
is an intensive series of 3 classes and
application exercises (12 in class hours and 9 self-study hours for a potential 21
clock hours) that provide caregivers with useful skills for promoting pro-social
behaviors in the learning environment. Camp Fire, in collaboration with Hand In
Hand, will offer two tracks: one infant/toddler track and one preschool track at
two different sites.
