JUNE 2016 It’s difficult to believe that we’ve already reached the midyear mark and that we’re entering the summer months. We’ve just completed a very successful Goodfellow Appreciation Day event, and this year we took advantage of all that downtown San Angelo has to offer. Our military neighbors were treated to a huge BBQ lunch, live music and great activities for the entire family. In addition, we partnered with all of the surrounding attractions who generously offered a free day to our military guests. Our annual event was expanded to include visits to Fort Jamie Akin Concho, San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, the Railway Museum, Chairman of the Board Bosque Park and even the Municipal Pool. If you were downtown on Saturday, you may have seen the Concho River behind the River Stage filled with kayaks, canoes and paddleboats as our guests enjoyed being on the water. And after a quick moment to shift gears, we’re now turning our attention to our largest event of the year – our Showdown in San Angelo Drag Boat Races. This year’s event will celebrate 10 years of “Nitro on Nasworthy,” and will feature three full days of excitement. Qualifying races will be held on Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25 and final eliminations are Sunday, June 26. If you can help by volunteering, please visit www.ShowdowninSanAngelo.com and sign up for one of the many positions. We have a long way to go to fully staff this huge event, so if you can work a shift, please let us know. All volunteers may stay and enjoy the remainder of the day at no charge. If you can’t volunteer but would like to come out to the races, tickets are now on sale at the Showdown website or at the following ticket locations: Joe’s Icehouse, NAPA Auto Parts, Suddenlink, West Central Wireless, and the Chamber. We’re looking forward to a wonderful 10-year celebration of this event. Please go ahead and mark your calendar for the annual West Texas Legislative Summit which will be held on August 4th (with an evening reception/dinner with our legislators on August 3rd). This year’s topic will focus on education as we explore education funding, House Bill 5, the education/workforce connection, and dual credit programs, among many other timely topics. U.S. Congressman Mike Conaway, Senator Charles Perry and State Representative Drew Darby will partner with the Chamber and assist us by inviting a large number of our elected representatives to participate in the program. We still have a few sponsorship openings available, so contact Peggy Arnold to learn how your business can be a part of this very important local and regional event. The schedule and detailed information will be posted on the Chamber website within the next few weeks. As you can see, your Chamber has a lot going on, and we hope you’ll take advantage of these opportunities to be involved. Here are some other upcoming events: The June 14th membership luncheon will take place at Pearl on the Concho Hotel and will focus on leadership. 51st District Court Judge Barbara Walther will provide our keynote address, and we’ll honor the graduates of the 33rd class of Leadership San Angelo as they graduate from their 9-month program. Please register online at www.sanangelo.org or contact Laura Lewis at 655-4136 or [email protected] to RSVP by the June 10th deadline. The June 21st Business Brown Bag luncheon will feature SAPD Chief Tim Vasquez as he advises attendees on actions that should be taken during an active shooter incident in the workplace. There is no charge to attend, but you must make a reservation by calling 655-4136 to hold your seat. You may also order a $10 lunch or bring your own lunch. Business Brown Bag is jointly sponsored by the Chamber, ASU’s Small Business Development Center and the Business Factory. The June 28th Business @ Happy Hour will be hosted by Mosaic and ABC 38, and will be held at Mosaic’s location at 5191 S. Bryant Blvd. The jackpot drawing will be $400 (if not won at the May event), but remember someone from your organization must be present to claim the prize! No RSVP is needed, so bring plenty of business cards to network and promote your business! Finally, I want to assure our membership that the search for a new President/CEO is progressing well. I very much appreciate the way our Search Committee is leading this process with careful and deliberate steps to assure that we find the best possible candidate to lead our organization. Everyone involved in the process understands that there are big shoes to fill! Thank you for your continued support. Dear Chamber Member, The primary mission of the San Angelo Chamber is to help San Angelo and your business grow, and this is a goal we pursue on a day-to-day basis! In order to keep our community healthy and growing, we promote San Angelo to prospective new businesses that will establish operations in our community and provide new jobs, and to prospective new residents who will become part of the workforce to fill our available jobs. Tourism is a multi-billion dollar industry in the state of Texas, and your Chamber works every day to garner its share. Each year the Chamber publishes Portraits of San Angelo magazine, and it is the Chamber’s primary image piece. We distribute thousands of copies throughout the city, mail it to prospective new employers and new residents, and distribute it at trade shows, conferences and events throughout the year. Portraits is also available online on the Chamber’s website. It is a well-utilized information piece that portrays the many facets that define San Angelo: business, education, medical services, the economy, the arts, sports and recreation options, just to name a few. Our goal is to offer a well-rounded view of life in San Angelo, and it is done with beautiful photography and well-written articles. Although there are numerous quality publications created and distributed throughout San Angelo, Portraits of San Angelo is the ONLY magazine that supports your Chamber of Commerce through a revenue sharing program. Your advertisement in Portraits not only promotes your business to new residents, new businesses and visitors, but a portion of the advertising revenue funnels directly into Chamber programs, helping us to offer the highest level of services to our members and maintain the excellent programs we are able to offer. Many of our members use Portraits to aid in their employee recruitment programs. Advertising sales have begun on the 2016-2017 edition of Portraits of San Angelo Magazine. This will be the Chamber’s 12th annual community magazine, and it will be available for distribution later this summer. To learn how your company can be included, contact Pam Hammer at our partner publisher, the San Angelo Standard-Times, 325-659-8257 or by email at [email protected]. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or would like to request copies of Portraits of San Angelo Magazine.
